'Til the end, teacher puts students' lives before hers in sinking ferry

02:14
A total of 14 teachers from Danwon High School were on the ill-fated trip to Jeju, when the Sewol-ho ferry sank. Three teachers were rescued, while 11 remained unaccounted for. One of those who didn't make it... is a teacher, who until the end... was more concerned about her students, than herself. Connie Lee has the story. In the last desperate moments before the ship was going down... a daughter texts her mother. "Mom, the ship is sinking." In shock and confused,... the mother calls her daughter, [ ] Jeon Su-young right away. " ' , ' . ." [ : I told her, 'hurry wear a life vest.' But all she said was 'Mom, the students are all wearing life vests.' Now that I think about it, this meant that students had life vests on, while she didn't.] To her boyfriend, Su-young texts him that, "there are no life vests... I'm sorry." The boyfriend calls her immediately, but they hang up after 12 seconds on the line. Su-young tells him that she needs to call her students' parents. " ." [ : She said the ship was sinking and that she had to quickly get all her students in life vests. We hung up shortly after. She said her battery was running low, and that she needed to call her students' parents.] Her last words to her boyfriend... "I love you" and "Thank you." It was Su-young's second year as a homeroom teacher at Danwon High School. And as for the school's yearly field trip--- this one to Jeju island on the [ ] Sewol-ho ferry, was her first. Her room remains untouched... since the day she left for the ill-fated trip. Her bike too... remains parked... waiting for Su-young to return. Apparently her grandmother is also waiting... for her granddaughter to come home safely. " . . ." [ : Her grandmother still believes that she is alive. She says that her granddaughter is safely inside the ship. She continues to believe that.] But as much as there is sadness over the loss... her mother is also proud of her daughter... who put the lives of her students before her own. N. Korean defector making swift recovery, but long-term health effects likely

01:48
탈북한 병사 빠른 회복 중, 의사에 따르면 장기 영향 있을 수 있어. It's been more than ten days since a North Korean soldier made a desperate dash across the Joint Security Area in the Demilitarized Zone to escape the repressive regime. After being shot multiple times by his former comrades, the defector is recovering well,... but doctors have expressed concerns about the long-term health effects of his injuries. Lee Unshin starts us off. After two major surgeries and days in intensive care,... the North Korean soldier who risked his life fleeing to the South is making a swift recovery at Ajou University Hospital in Suwon, south of Seoul. The 24-year-old soldier, identified only by his family name Oh, was shot five times by his former comrades when he sprinted across the Military Demarcation Line on November 13th. However, Doctor Lee Cook-jong, who led the surgery on the soldier, says he could suffer long-term health problems, such as blockage of the intestines, known as Intestinal Obstruction, due to a number of his organs being penetrated by bullets. Considering his condition, the doctor has suggested the defector shouldn't go through official questioning for at least another month. For now, the defector is said to be resting, enjoying TV shows, like the American crime investigation series CSI and Hollywood movies, and listening to some of his favorite K-pop singers - on repeat. With hospital staff, the former soldier also shared his experience of having driven Hyundai vehicles back in the North. Meanwhile, following the defection, North Korea appears to be tightening its border security. A picture posted on Twitter by Marc Knapper, the acting U.S. ambassador to South Korea,... shows North Korean workers digging a trench on the northern side of the Joint Security Area. The world's second largest sporting event opens in style

02:12
세계에서 두 번째로 큰 스포츠 축제 드디어 개막 The 2018 Asian Games kicked off Saturday in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. It's considered the world's second biggest sporting event, in terms of global participation. And this year, South and North Korea are joining hands once again to compete together in several events. The Games began with a call for world peace. Won Jung-hwan reports. 2018 Asian Games kicked off in the Indonesian capital with a dazzling opening ceremony. Just before the ceremony began, there was an amusing video showing Indonesian President Joko Widodo trying to make it to his appearance there on time. His convoy is stuck in one of Jakarta's infamous traffic jams, so the President grabs a motorbike... and weaves through the cars and narrow lanes to get to the stadium just in time. After the President's ordeal, there was the breathtaking scene of some 2-thousand school children doing Indonesia's traditional Saman dance, which UNESCO has listed as part of the world's cultural heritage. They welcomed the athletes, who this year hail from 45 different countries. With around 11-thousand people competing from all across the region, the Asian Games are considered the world's second largest sporting event second only to the Olympics. When the Korean delegation appeared, the stadium let out a roar. Athletes and officials from South and North marched in together behind the Korean Unification Flag, which bears an image of the Korean Peninsula in light blue... against a white background. Their presence together in Jakarta is a symbol of peace,... as was their joint entrance to the Winter Olympics this past February in Pyeongchang. Bearing the flag together were Lim Yung-hui, the South Korean captain of the unified women's basketball team,... and North Korean football player Ju Kyong-chol. This was the 11th time in history that the two Koreas have walked in together. The first was at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney Olympics. They've done it also at the Asian Games in South Korea's Busan in 2002... and in Doha in 2006. The Games in Jakarta will run for two weeks. And spectators can look forward to unified Korean teams competing in women's basketball, dragon boat racing and rowing. Won Jung-hwan, Arirang News. Sewol-ho Ferry emerged from water for the first time in nearly 3 years

02:22
3년만에 처음으로 물밖으로 나온 세월호 인양 과정 Our top story; a massive operation to raise the sunken Sewol-ho. The ferry sank in 2014, and was recorded as one of the worst maritime disasters in Korea's history, taking over 3-hundred lives, mostly high school students. Shin Se-min starts us off with details on the procedure It's the first time the Sewol-ho Ferry has been seen above the surface of the sea since it sunk in the waters around Jindo Island almost three years ago. The 145-meter long, over 68-hundred ton ferry emerged from the dark seawater with its surface rusty and scratched. Given the size of the vessel it's a monumental task, and at the same time,... an expensive one too. The Korean government agreed two years ago to a deal worth some 76 billion U.S. dollars with a consortium led by China's state-run company Shanghai Salvage to raise the ferry. And the operation conducted both by Korea's oceans ministry and Shanghai Salvage is being carried out in a careful manner, as there are still nine victims missing and their bodies could still be inside the vessel. The reason why the engineers are taking the vessel out of the water *without cutting it into pieces, and have also cast a net around the ferry, is to help recover the bodies, believed to still be trapped inside. The marathon operation of lifting the sunken ferry above the water began with raising the ship 13 meters out of the water and placing the ferry onto a semi-submersible ship for transport. The sunken ferry will now be transported to Mokpo New Port, just 87 kilometers away from the disaster site. The transport is expected to take at least 8-days, depending on weather conditions. If all goes as planned, the recovered ship will be placed at Mokpo port and searched for the missing nine bodies as well as answers to what exactly caused this manmade disaster. "Three years of planning the recovery operation come down to 12 or 13 days of execution. And after that... it'll be time to start recovering the truth. Shin Se-min, Arirang News, Jindo. A briefing session by Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is being held. We'll have more from that event on our later newscast. Sewol-ho ferry arrives at Mokpo New Port

02:34
침몰 3년만에 항구로 가는 세월호…오후 목포신항 도착 The Sewol-ho ferry has arrived at its final destination of Mokpo -- almost three years after it sank in waters off Korea's southwestern coast,... leaving 304 people dead. The vessel will soon undergo an investigation to find the exact cause of the disaster,... and hopefully recover the remains of the nine bodies that are still unaccounted for. For the latest,... let's go live to our Kim Min-ji, who is at Mokpo New Port, where the vessel has just docked. Min-ji, the semi-submersible transporting the ferry arrived sooner than expected? That's right, Daeun The semi-submersible -- with the Sewol-ho on board -- arrived here at Mokpo New Port just about an hour ago. The vessel's last voyage comes one-thousand-80 days after it capsized off Korea's southwestern coast.... and six days after it was salvaged from the sea. The semi-submersible covered a distance of about 105 kilometers today. The journey was initially expected to take about eight hours,... but took about two hours less than that. The ferry was escorted by five maritime police patrol ships,... and some of the relatives of the nine missing passengers still unaccounted for followed behind on a barge. Well it's good that there were no delays. Could you give us a rundown of what happens next? Sure. Over the course of about three days,... seawater and oil will be drained from the vessel and the ferry will be detached from the semi-submersible. That's expected to take some time because there are 50 attachment sites securing the ferry to the semi-submersible. Then a module transporter will be used to get the vessel onto land -- which will take about a day. So all in all, officials expect the transfer to take about four days in all,... provided the weather remains favorable and there are no problems with the equipment. After that, the vessel will be disinfected and fumigated, which is expected to take about a week. After that's complete, they will begin the search for the nine missing bodies... and an investigation into the exact cause of the sinking. The disaster left 304 people dead, most of them high school students, in April 2014. A special committee tasked with the investigation will work with the families of the missing to map out a search plan by early April. Da-eun? North Korea soldier makes daring defection to South Korea across JSA

02:02
판문점 JSA초소서 북한군1명 귀순…北총격 받고 긴급후송 A North Korean soldier defects to the South in the most unexpected way: Crossing the border at the heavily guarded Joint Security Area. As troops stationed in the frontline are believed to be chosen for their loyalty, this could severely bruise the regime's military pride. He was shot at by men from his side, but was picked up by South Korean soldiers and was taken to the hospital. For details on the daring escape, we turn to our Kwon Jang-ho The Joint Security Area -- located on the border between the two Koreas and the only place where soldiers from the two sides stand face-to-face. And at three-thirty-one PM on Monda, a lone North Korean soldier ran from a guard post on the northern side, and crossed over the Military Demarcation Line into South Korean territory. The soldier suffered from gunshot wounds to his shoulder and elbow from North Korean forces while defecting. Upon hearing the shots, South Korean soldiers raised the alarm, but the defector was not discovered until 25 minutes later, collapsed on the ground, 50-meters from the border and bleeding from his wounds. (Korean) Our soldiers safely retrieved the defector, and urgently evacuated him to hospital to treat his injuries. He was airlifted by a United Nations Command helicopter to Ajou University Medical Center in Suwon, just south of Seoul, where he underwent surgery. The defector is thought to be in his twenties or thirties, and wore a uniform of low rank. Defecting through the JSA is extremely rare, with only two previous instances in 1998 and 2007. South Korean authorities have reassured that there was no altercation between South and North Korean soldiers, but added that Seoul will remain alert to any possible provocations. It's been almost two months since North Korea last carried out a ballistic missile test, or any other provocation, and many have hoped that this signalled an easing of tensions on the peninsula. It's currently unclear what response Pyongyang will give to Monday's incident. Kwon Jang-ho, Arirang News. The Simple Life

04:57
심플라이프 Minimalism is a hot keyword for 2017 in Korea. Minimalism refers to a simple lifestyle which eliminates the unnecessary in everything from objects to human relations. We look into the social phenomena brought about by the minimalism trend. This is an apartment located in Seoul. The house of Seon Hye-rim , who married 4 years ago, features few objects but lots of empty space. The only things in the living room are a decorative stand, a table, and an air conditioner. It’s because she is a minimalist, who has been practicing the minimalism lifestyle for 2 years. (Korean) "When we got home, we felt as if we had to work, instead of experiencing rest. We argued often, and cleaning up was difficult. This led us naturally to a minimal life." ( .) The first order of business upon deciding on a change in lifestyle was to part with precious belongings. Thanks to 2 years of effort, only the bare necessities are left. There was some concern that this could cause discomfort, but the gains have far outweighed the losses. (Korean) "With a minimal life, it’s important to organize space first, and then to determine the items which befit that space. For example, the number of hangers in a closet is pre-determined. Only clothing which fits the hangers is then stored." ( . .) The recent minimalism trend emerged around 2010. It was largely thanks to Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus of the U.S. In Japan, minimalism emerged as a new, alternate lifestyle in the wake of the 2011 East Japan earthquake. Hot on the heels of the U.S. and Japan, the minimalism trend has also made its way to Korea. What’s the reason for minimalism’s global appeal? (Korean) "It’s a cloud lifestyle, similar to storing files on a cloud server. Even without having something in my home, I can consume in the form of taking it out whenever I need it. This is becoming a global trend." ( .) Some analysts believe the rise of single person households led to minimalism’s rapid expansion. Meanwhile, the minimalist trend is changing industry overall. Electronics makers are targeting the market with small but useful products. (Korean) "In the past, customers preferred bigger, large-scale appliances. Now, their appliance purchase preferences lean toward simple and personally-tailored items." ( , .) Simple lifestyles are leading to simplified consumption. Experts cite this as the positive effective of minimalism.

What caused the ship to sink?

02:10
More clues are emerging about what might have caused the Sewol-ho ferry to sink. Kim Min-ji reports on three possible scenarios that occurred one-by-one. Around 8.30 am on Wednesday, April 16th,... the Sewol-ho ferry passed through treacherous waters,... which are notorious here in Korea for their strong currents. Eighteen minutes later,... the ferry veers suddenly,... which has been pointed to as the first factor in the sinking. The stern is believed to have turned 80-degrees to the right. "What it means by the vessel supposedly making a P-turn is that the helm was turned to the right,... then back again,... but the boat didn't come back to its original position. Operations momentarily froze,... which results in the ferry making a complete turn." Due to centrifugal force,... the vessel tilts to the left. Now this is when the second factor may have come in. Grips holding down the ferry's freight may have come lose,... causing containers and vehicles in the cargo compartment to list sharply to one side. The weight concentrated on just one side of the ferry,... causes it to tilt even further. If the vessel had enough dynamic stability,... the vessel could have bounced back to the other side and maintained balance. However, due to renovations to increase the vessel's capacity,... the center of gravity on the ship had been raised from its original design. "Due to the expansion of the ship,... the upper structure has been changed,... making the center of gravity much higher. If the center of gravity and buoyancy are far apart,... the dynamic stability decreases." Experts say the reduced dynamic stability caused the vessel to completely submerge,... because it wasn't able to recover from the initial tilt. They add that the Sewol-ho ferry may not have had enough ballast water,... which maintains the balance of the vessel,... in order to carry more cargo. As all three factors could have been prevented,... experts say the sinking will likely be attributed to human error. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News.

Global companies closing factories in China

′세계의 공장′ 중국에 부는 ′탈중국′ 바람

02:03
More and more global companies are packing up and pulling their factories out of China,... raising concerns the country′s manufacturing industry could be spiraling down a dangerous path. As labor costs rise and economic growth contracts,... China has lost its position as the go-to place to invest. Kim Min-ji reports. Japanese watch-maker Citizen recently shut down its factory in Guangzhou. More than one-thousand employees are up in arms after being laid off,... but the company says it′s part of its restructuring plans. Citizen isn′t the only one. U.S. software giant Microsoft has also shut down its Nokia factory in Guangzhou,... and plans to open a new factory in Vietnam. And with the Beijing factory also expected to close,... some 9-thousand employees are expected to lose their jobs. Industry watchers estimate more than 100 large factories, including ones run by Sharp and Panasonic, were shut down before the Chinese New Year in the city of Dongguan one of the country′s main manufacturing hubs. But what has triggered the mass exodus? Experts say rising labor and land costs. Such factors no longer make China a profitable investment. What′s more is that the world′s second largest economy is not expanding as fast as it used to. Another factor is that countries in Southeast Asia, such as India and Vietnam,... are stepping up efforts to lure foreign companies. The U.S., Japan and Europe are also offering incentives, such as tax cuts and investment support, to encourage home-grown companies to come back. The trend has raised concerns that China′s manufacturing industry,... once driven by cheap labor,... is heading for a crisis. The official Purchasing Managers′ Index stood at 49-point-8,... falling below 50 for the first time in more than two years,.... signalling a contraction. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News.

Korean researchers find key cause of bipolar disorder

01:41
극단적 행동 부르는 '조울증'...발병 이유 찾았다 A team of Korean researchers has found a key element for bipolar disorder, which is known to cause severe shifts in mood and behavior. The finding is expected to open new doors for both diagnosis and treatment. Park Se-young has the details. Last September, a young man in Korea suffering from bipolar disorder killed his grandmother and injured his father at home. This is one of the more serious expressions of the mental illness, which is more often associated with manic episodes. There was once a limit to both diagnosis and treatment, but now, a team of Korean researchers has found a key cause behind bipolar disorder. Without a specific protein, a problem occurs in nerve transmission, which leads to uncontrollable excitement or depression. "In order to transmit signals, nerve cells need to form dendritic spines. The absence of the key protein results in a dramatic change in spinal formation, causing an imbalance in signal transmission." When the researchers removed the protein in mice, they showed manic behaviors resembling those exhibited by people with bipolar disorder. "By making the connection between the protein and bipolar disorder, we were able to create animal models. With the models, we can test various drugs and eventually create effective mood stabilizing drugs." The researchers added that the protein not only causes bipolar disorder, but also contributes to autism and obsessive compulsive disorder. They expect their finding to open doors to new treatments for a variety of mental illnesses. Park Se-young, Arirang News. President Moon Jae-in speaks to N. Korean audience of 150,000

07:25
문 대통령, 집단체조 北 관람객 15만 명에 인사말 President Moon capped off the second day of the summit by attending perhaps North Korea's most famous cultural product, the Mass Games. Not only did he attend, he became the first South Korean leader to deliver a speech to a mass North Korean audience, in this case, numbering some 150-thousand people. We'll now listen to that in its entirety. Citizens of Pyeongyang, I am very glad to see you all here tonight. As the president of South Korea, I feel deeply honored to speak to you. As you can see with your own eyes, we are opening a new era together. My fellow Koreans, Chairman Kim Jong-un and I had an encounter full of meaning at Panmunjeom on April 27th. We had a warm embrace. And today, we have agreed that there will be no more war on the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, we have solemnly announced both to our 80 million fellow Koreans and to the international community that a new era of peace has dawned on the Peninsula. We have also affirmed the principle of national self-determination, that we ourselves will determine the fate of our people. Also, we have firmly promised to advance a future of common prosperity, to independently restore our blood-based ties, and to develop inter-Korean relations in a thorough and dramatic way. This fall, I, President Moon Jae-in, decided to make this trip to Pyeongyang. Dear citizens of Pyeongyang, Chairman Kim Jong-un and I have agreed specifically to completely eliminate the threat and fear of war on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, from Mt. Baekdusan to Mt. Hallasan, we promised to leave our future generations this beautiful land, free of nuclear weapons and nuclear threats. And we will quickly take steps to fundamentally end the suffering of separated families before it's too late. I send generous applause and thanks to Chairman Kim, who is walking along with me towards a new future. Dear citizens of Pyeongyang, on this visit, I have witnessed the remarkable development of this city. I have seen the kind of nation you are trying to build, how much you strive for peace and your bravery in hard times. Dear fellow citizens, we are great. We are strong. We love peace. And we should live together. We lived together for over 5,000 years and have been separated for 70 years. I propose today to completely end this 70-year separation and take a big step towards peace. Chairman Kim and I will firmly join hands and work to build a new fatherland. Let us move into a new future together. I would like to thank the many Pyeongyang citizens, young people, students and children who have warmly welcomed our delegation. Thank you. Introducing Moon Jae-in, the next President of Korea

01:57
문재인, 그는 누구인가? His victory of the 2017 presidential election is confirmed. Already some of his qualities visibly set him apart from most politicians. Humility over self-promotion, listening instead of screaming back during arguments. Our Hwang Ho-joon help us get better acquainted with Moon Jae-in, the man who will take the steerign wheel of Korea for the next five years. A best-selling author, human rights lawyer, a leader of the opposition party,... and now the newly elected President. The 64-year-old politician has held many titles through the years, but they haven't always been in politics. Moon Jae-in was born in 1953 in Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do province, an island just off the coast of Busan, the eldest son of a refugee from North Korea. In the 70s, he was arrested and later expelled from college for organizing a protest against the authoritarian Park Jung-hee administration. While performing his mandatory military service, assigned to the special forces, he was part of the response team to the 1976 ax murder incident in the demilitarized zone. After the military, he became a human rights lawyer, which is where he met and befriended the late Roh Moo-hyun, who went on to become Korea's ninth President. Moon served as Roh's campaign manager and then as his presidential chief of staff. In 2012, Moon entered politics by winning a seat in the National Assembly representing Busan's Sasang-gu District as a member of the Democratic United Party. He was later nominated as the party's candidate in the 2012 presidential election but lost to Park Geun-hye. He then became the leader of the New Politics Alliance for Democracy in 2015. That ultimately prompted the departure of rival Ahn Cheol-soo... and the party to change its name to the Democratic Party of Korea, as it is known today. Starting Wednesday, Moon takes on a new role which he won on his second try -- President of the Republic of Korea. Hwang Hojun, Arirang News. Macron to address nation after fourth weekend of violent "yellow vest" movement

02:02
佛 정국 금주 분수령…'마크롱 메시지'에 시위 확산-수습 기로 French President Emmanuel Macron is to address the nation on Monday as another weekend of anti-government protests left parts of Paris in ruins. For more on this and other news around the world we turn to our Ro Aram… Aram… the pressure keeps mounting on the young French leader. That's right Mark…. Macron has been very quiet during the month-long "yellow vest" movement, sending his prime minister to deal with the situation. But that's all about to change as the public's anger towards his government grows. On Monday morning, local time, Macron will meet with business and political leaders as well as trade unions to try to diffuse the tensions. Soon after those meetings, the Elysee Palace says he will deliver a televised address to the nation. It's expected to be apologetic in nature, with announcements of further tax cuts. Increased fuel taxes initially sparked the "yellow vest" protests, but they have been escalating due to broader anger towards Macron's government. There have been more than 1,700 arrests amid the riots. Businesses have been destroyed or looted and major Paris landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower, have been closed to the public. Several people have died and scores more have been wounded in clashes with police. Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said Sunday the unrest was creating what he called a "catastrophe" for the French economy. The local retail sector is said to have suffered more than a billion U.S. dollars in lost revenue since the start of the demonstrations. Meanwhile, France's foreign minister lashed out at Donald Trump after the U.S. president, in a series of Saturday tweets, appeared to suggest the Paris Climate Agreement was the reason for the unrest. Jean-Yves Le Drian urged Trump to stop meddling in his country's domestic affairs. N. Korean soldier walks across DMZ to defect

북한군 10대병사 비무장지대 통해 귀순

01:34
A North Korean soldier... in his late teens... defected to the South earlier today. South Korean authorities say the soldier had walked across the D-M-Z, which is the heavily-guarded military demarcation line between the two Koreas. Won Ji-hyun has this story. It was around 8 o'clock this morning that a young soldier from North Korea was found on South Korean soil. An official from Seoul's defense ministry says the soldier in his late teens walked across the eastern side of the inter-Korean border... to end up in Hwacheon of South Korea's Gangwon-do province. Although the soldier had crossed what's known to be one of the most heavily militarized zones in the world, the authority said that no fires were exchanged in the incident. But it did raise tensions on the border, as South Korean soldiers prepared for a possible confrontation with the North during the crossing. The soldier expressed his will to defect through a South Korean guard post and told authorities that he wanted to escape the harsh reality in North Korea, which included regular beatings. Although hundreds of North Koreans try to flee their homeland every year, it is rare for them to cross the land border, as it's guarded by tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides. In fact, this was the first time in almost three years that a North Korean defector actually crossed the DMZ to get to the South. The young soldier from this morning is still under investigation. South Korean authorities said they will release more details on Tuesday. Won Ji-hyun, Arirang News.

Excessive no. of parasites in defected N. Korean soldier shows dire situations of N. Korean military

북한군 병사 몸속에 기생충 바글바글, 열악한 북한병사 상태 보여줘 The North Korean soldier who was shot while defecting to South Korea on Monday is still in critical condition... after having surgery to treat the five gunshot wounds he suffered while crossing the Joint Security Area. The surgeon treating him said he found parasites in the patient's intestines,... showing the poor health of North Korea's soldiers. Park Ji-won has this story. The North Korean soldier who defected to South Korea on Monday is still in critical condition,... although the bullets have now all been removed from his body after two major surgeries. The second three-hour-long surgery focused on removing damaged tissues, along with the last remaining bullet. Surgeon Lee Guk-jong, who led the two operations held a briefing,... saying the recovery won't be easy,... especially given that large numbers of parasites were found in the soldier's small intestine,... infecting the wounded organs. The parasites, including a 27-centimeter-long round worm,... reflect the dire situations that North Korean soldiers face. (Korean) "In more than 20 years of my career as a surgeon, I've only ever seen this amount of worms in textbooks, never seen among South Koreans." Undigested food was also found inside the patient, mostly corns, showing the poor state of nutrition in the North Korean military. The surgeon said the soldier's condition has improved since his admission to hospital,... but the complications are worrisome, and he is currently relying on breathing apparatus. (Korean) "What is paramount now is the patient's cardio-pulmonary function, liver function, and kidney function. They have not yet reached a normal range." He said drug treatment should continue,... and a press briefing will be held next week after more surgeries. Park Ji-won, Arirang News. Taiwanese Kpop group member sets off cross-Strait political row

02:02
쯔위 사태 일파만파 The controversy surrounding a Taiwanese member of a K-pop girl-group continues. The teenage pop star waved a Taiwanese flag on a Korean TV show and has sparked a cross-Strait political row. Park Ji-won reports. It all started with a waving of Taiwanese flag on a Korean entertainment program,... after 16-year old K-pop group member Tzu-yu,.. born and raised in Taiwan,... introduced her homeland to the Korean viewers. It was innocuous enough to Koreans,... but not to Chinese viewers. The Taiwanese flag is considered a symbol of Taiwan's pro-independence movement,... the teenage pop star released a video apology last Friday,... saying she feels deep remorse for her actions,... and stressed there is only one China. The K-pop star's agency JYP also released an apology statement the same day,.saying the agency was not prudent enough with regards to the sensitivity of the matter. Taiwanese citizens expressed anger over the teenage singer's apology on the day of its presidential election a day after the video was uploaded. It became a main issue during the election over the weekend,... and analysts said the flag row may have widened the main opposition's victory margin by some one percent. The main opposition party is skeptical about closer ties with Beijing,... gaining a majority in the parliament for the first time. "We need to make sure the world realizes that there is nothing wrong with waving the Taiwanese flag. It's not something that should be condemned." With the flag-row deepening,... Taiwanese citizens are organizing a massive protest on Sunday,... and about 10-thousand people have expressed willingness to join the movement. Amid the controversy, the official website of JYP,.. Taiwanese teen's Korean agency,... was hacked over the weekend. The website remains down,... and the agency says at the moment,..it does not know the source of the cyber attack. Kim Jong-un en route to Vietnam summit by train

02:52
김정은, 전용열차로 어제 하노이로 출발… 실무회담은 아직 안열려 We are now just three days away from the 2nd North Korea-U.S. summit to be held in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi. The North Korean leader is already on his way down there, and as many expected, he's taking the train. Our Lee Ji-won is in Hanoi and we go to her now for the latest. Ji-won what do you have for us? Devin, like you said North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been confirmed to be taking a train to to Vietnam. He reportedly passed through the Chinese city of Dandong, on the border with North Korea, last night at around 9-thirty, local time. His departure was reported by Russia's TASS news agency, and it was confirmed this morning by North Korea's state-run news agency that Kim had indeed left Saturday afternoon. The report listed the delegates accompanying Kim, which included Kim Yong-chol, who has negotiated with Secretary Pompeo, Ri Su-yong, vice chairman of the central committee of the Worker's Party of Korea, Ri Yong Ho, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kim Yo-jong, the North Korean leader's younger sister and Choe Son-hui, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. Now, we're not sure if Kim is going to take the route his grandfather, Kim Il-sung, took to get to Vietnam -- the late Kim took a train to China and then flew to Vietnam from there. But there have been preparations made at a train station on Vietnam's border with China, so we are expecting Kim to use train to come almost all the way here... which will be 4-thousand kilometers in distance, and take about 60 hours. The expectation is that he'll arrive at the border station at Dong Dang early Tuesday and take a car to Hanoi. There have been talks between the North Korean and American sides in Hanoi since last week, but we understand there weren't any this morning. Yes Devin. The working-level officials have been holding negotiations everyday since Thursday. But today, we heard that the U.S. delegates left their Hotel du Parc Hanoi early this morning. We're not yet sure where they are headed to. We also don't know where or what the North Korean delegates are doing right now. But it's our guess that the two sides are reporting to their respective superiors about the negotiations. Yesterday, their morning session finished in less than an hour,... but they resumed their talks in the afternoon, which lasted for 3 hours. The main points of contention are understood to include Pyeongyang's dismantlement of its nuclear facility at Yeongbyeon, Washington's declaration of an end to the Korean War, and allowing inter-Korean economic exchanges. "I will officially request to delay my mandatory military service today. If allowed, I will delay military enlistment and diligently cooperate with the investigation until the end." Two Koreas link up new cross-border road in DMZ

02:35
화살머리 고지에서 남북유해공동발굴을 위한 도로 연결 Let's start things off with a welcome development in inter-Korean ties. Seoul and Pyeongyang today linked up a new road between the two sides in the Demilitarized Zone. The path, set up to help joint operations to find remains of fallen soldiers, is looked to help move forward the peace process in the peninsula. Park Ji-won has our top story. The 12-meter-wide inter-Korean road was finally linked up Thursday,... connecting South and North Korea,.. across the Military Demarcation Line inside the DMZ. On the southern side, it's about 1-point-7 kilometers long and on the northern side 1-point-3 kilometers, so three kilometers in total in length. The road is unpaved for military purposes,... but the defense ministry says they still need to flatten it and dig ditches on the sides. All that's expected to be completed by the end of the year. South Korea's vice defense minister Suh Choo-suk went to the scene Thursday morning. "This is one of the major battlefields of the Korean War, where countless young lives were lost 65 years ago. We have built a road of peace, linking South and North, for the first time on this central frontline of the DMZ. I am sure the more this road is used, the more it will solidify peace on the peninsula." It will be the first inter-Korean road in the central region of Cheorwon, Gangwon-do Province in 65 years... since the war ended in 1953. It's also the first new one built across any part of the border in 14 years. There is one on the western side of the Peninsula built in 2003 and another on the eastern side built in 2004. The new road's location, on Arrowhead Hill, or Hwasalmori Goji in Korean, was the site of one of the fiercest battles of the Korean War. The two Koreas have agreed to use the area for their first ever joint project to recover remains from the Korean War. That'll happen from next April to October as a pilot program Right now the area is being cleared of landmines, a process expected to be completed by the end of this month. It is expected that the new road will be used frequently by both sides during the search for remains,... and Seoul's defense ministry said Thursday that more specific ways to use the road will be discussed by the two military authorites. The road-building project is part of the comprehensive military agreement between the two Koreas signed at September's summit in Pyeongyang. Park Ji-won, Arirang News. 수능 전국 1천212개 시험장서

It was the moment of truth for over 630-thousand students in Korea as they took this year′s college entrance exam. Known as suneung in Korean, the exam is one of the most important,... not ot mention stressful, events in a high school student′s life here in the country. And as the suneung is notoriously tough, everything feasible was done to make things easier for the young exam takers. Kwon Jang-Ho brings us this report. It was the annual college exam day in Korea. In the early morning, students arrived nervously at their designated test sites. They were cheered on by their schoolmates and given words of encouragement by their teachers, while parents watched anxiously as their children went in to face one of the most important moments of their lives. The public was also involved in making things easier for the exam takers. To ease the morning rush hour traffic, companies started work an hour late, including banks and the stock market. Additional buses, subway trains and taxis were put in service,... and even planes were grounded for 35 minutes during the listening comprehension portion of the exam. The police also helped out, providing emergency rides for students who found themselves running late. Younger students were doing their part as well. It has become a tradition for students to cheer on their upperclassmen on exam day. Such was the case of this group that waited since 9 p.m. of the previous day. We wanted to save the best spot from where we could cheer them. I′ve been up all night and of course I′m tired, but if it′s for our seniors, then I am always ready and willing. Many students study day in and night out for months and even years for this exam, leading to criticism that the exam puts too much burden on students. I am jealous of students in other countries. They don′t go through the same hardships as we do. They may take exams but they′re not as extreme as ours...I wish I could go to those countries. And after all that studying, it all comes down to just one single day. ″The whole of a student′s life hangs in the balance of how you feel on one day...I hope a better system can be introduced in the future.″ The Korean and Math sections are said to have been difficult this year, while the English portion was a bit more forgiving. But it will be a few weeks before the students find out the results. The exam results will be released on December 2nd. Until then, the students will have a long nervous wait, but for now at least it’s over. Kwon Jang-Ho, Arirang News.

Korean researchers to mass produce micro-LED

01:51
마이크로 LED 대량생산 눈앞, 한국 기계 연구원 Korean researchers developed a method to mass produce micro-LED displays, The display is highly efficient compared to the existing OLED or LCD screens..., and with a new technology to manufacture them, researchers say it won't be long before the display is used for smartphone screens. Lee Un-shin reports. A screen display to replace LCD and OLED screens will soon be available for commercial uses in a global market. Researchers at the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials came up with a technology to manufacture micro-LED displays, using roll-to-roll processing,... a procedure for creating electronic devices on plastic or metal roll. "Current technology can transfer 2 LEDs per second, but with our micro-LED technology, 40,000 LEDs can be transferred per second." The widely used LCD and OLEDs are limited in terms of energy consumption and flexibility. Micro-LEDs however, use 50-percent of the power, and have 3-times the luminous potential of a standard OLED,... meaning that given the same electricity consumption, micro-LEDs are 2 to 3 times brighter. They can also be morphed into just about any shape, while allowing for higher-resolution screens... making them ideal for digital billboards. "First this could be applied to wearable tech gadgets like smart watches, next onto displays or glasses, and it will used in augmented reality or virtual reality displays." Market research firm MarketsandMarkets, expects the micro-LED market to jump from 250 million U.S. dollars this year to some 20 billion U.S. dollars by 2025,... most of which will be accounted for by the display sector. Curtain comes down on 2018 Asian Games with closing ceremony

02:39
2018 아시안게임 성황리에 폐막, 항저우에서 다시 만나요 After more than two weeks of sporting action featuring the best athletes from across the continent,... the curtain came down on the 18th Asian Games on Sunday with a glittering closing ceremony. South Korea finished with 49 golds to rank third in medal table behind China and Japan. That's 16 short of the country's target, but there were still plenty of reasons to celebrate. Won Jung-hwan reports. For the past 16 days,.... Jakarta and Palembang, the co-host cities of the 2018 Asian Games, hosted more than eleven-thousand athletes from 45 nations competing for 465 gold medals in 40 sports. On Sunday,... the Games came to a triumphant close in Jakarta. If the opening ceremony wowed the audience for the richness of Indonesia's heritage,… the closing ceremony was more modest in scale, but extravagant in its liveliness. It was a celebration of athletes from different countries that highlighted the culture of not just Indonesia but other Asian nations as well. Bonding the nations together was the power of music. K-pop superstars iKON and Super Junior took to the stage, turning the evening into a spectacular concert that was well received by the crowd. But before the singers stole the show, some of the athletes came out to say goodbye to fans in Indonesia and thank them for their support. While there wasn't a formal parade of athletes at the closing ceremony,… the two Koreas marched in together just like they did at the opening ceremony. The two flag bearers, South Korean Suh Hyo-won and North Korean Choe Il of the North, came in hand-in-hand to big cheers. South and North Korea competed as one in three sports -- canoeing, rowing and women's basketball. And they far outstripped expectations,... winning four medals, including a gold in women's dragon boat racing and a silver in women's basketball. Sending a congratulatory message to Indonesia for successfully hosting the Asian Games,… South Korean President Moon Jae-in highlighted the performances by the joint Korean teams. He said he believes the deep sound of Arirang, Korea's most popular folk song, will bring the two together again. As the curtain came down in Jakarta,... athletes will start preparing for the next Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2022. It will be the third Chinese city to host the competition, after Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010. Won Jung-hwan, Arirang News. N. Korean leader on a surprise city tour on first day of Hanoi trip

02:31
김정은, 하노이 방문 첫 일정으로 북한 대사관 방문 Kim Jong-un arrived in Vietnam today,... after a long train ride all the way from North Korea. It's the first visit to the country by a leader of the regime in over half-a-century. Once again we start things off by connecting to our reporters standing by in the host city. Our Park Hee-jun is at the Melia Hotel where Kim is staying. Hee-jun, what has he been up to on his first day? It looks like the North Korean leader has gone for a surprise outing tonight after all. Right now he's at the North Korean embassy... having left the hotel just about an hour ago. More than a dozen vehicles carrying the North Korean delegation departed with a security escort. Kim left in the same black Mercedes he took from Dong Dang Station to Melia Hotel. The road he took to get to the embassy... was of course heavily guarded. He was seen entering the embassy with his top nuclear envoy Kim Yong-chol, his younger sister Kim Yo-jong... and his protocol chief Kim Chang-son. It's starting to look quite similar to his schedule back in Singapore. When he was there for his first face-to-face with President Trump,... he went to some key tourist spots in the country ahead of the summit. If you remember, he even took a selfie at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel,... which was quite a surprise. Maybe we'll be able to get another selfie out of him in Vietnam. The North Korean embassy is only one-and-a-half kilometer away from the Melia Hotel. While he's out he could also stop by some other places in Hanoi. Lotte Center, for instance,... is an important landmark of South Korea's economic influence in Vietnam. He is after all, well known for his interest in seeking economic reforms for North Korea,... with the Vietnam model being one of the options. Another place he might go is the Presidential Palace... because the Vietnamese President is back from a trip to other nearby countries. When Kim was on his way to the Melia hotel earlier today... it was thought he might stop by some other key sites in Vietnam... like Ha Long Bay, a popular tourist destination,... and industrial sites in Hai Phong or Bac Ninh Province. He might still do that while he's in the country. He could also visit a cemetery some 60 kilometers outside Hanoi where 14 North Koreans who died fighting in the Vietnam War... are buried. That'll be easier to do thanks to the Vietnamese government clearing traffic for him. Starting this evening, the Vietnamese government is restricting vehicles from using certain parts of Hanoi. They will also be applied tomorrow,... from nine in the morning to three in the afternoon. And that adds speculation that Kim could make another surprise trip. That's all I have at this hour. Possible hotels for Kim and Trump say their bookings are full, but security is not too tight yet

02:41
북미정상회담 2주 앞두고, 정상들 유력 숙소 앞 분위기는? Vietnam's foreign minister and protocol chief wrapped up their visit to North Korea, and now, we're expecting the two negotiating sides and the host country to put their summit preparations into high gear. To get updated on the situation, let's go straight to our Lee Ji-won, standing by in Hanoi. Ji-won, do fill us in on some of the tell-tale signs of how the host city is getting ready. Daniel, behind me is the JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi, that's where President Donald Trump is expected to stay during his summit with Kim Jong-un in two week's time. The reception says rooms are fully booked as they have a big team staying over that period, without giving more details. And it seems security's gotten a bit tight, especially when we tried to film the hotel. We were approached by hotel personnel, telling us that we can only film the hotel close up with our phones. Meanwhile earlier in the day we were over at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, one of the possibilities for Kim Jong-un's hotel. That's around 10 kilometers away from the JW Marriott. The security there was much more lax, but they were also not taking any reservations from February 25th to 28th. When I asked them, they said the rooms are almost full and also that they have (quote) "delegations staying." When I tried to confirm if they mean that the North Korean delegation will be staying at the hotel, the reception said it's confidential. Okay then Ji-won how about the summit venue? We have one place that's widely expected to host the event right? Yes you're right Daniel. Many of us are speculating that the Vietnam National Convention Center will be the summit venue. That's where the 2006 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and the 2010 ASEAN Summit were held. It's really just a five minute walk from JW Marriott,... but the security was much tighter. All roads leading to the center were blocked, and we weren't even allowed to walk past the street next to it. But this may not be necessarily due to the summit as locals say it's normally a high-security area. Another place where we saw lots of surveillance was the North Korean embassy. While we couldn't see any significant preparations, there was a sign in front saying 'no entrance' and the guards in front of the gate were watching us with keen eyes. The North Korean officials also blocked windows with a cover, something that wasn't there a few weeks ago. It's reported that, according to a local police officer, the embassy had been designated as a special security area by the Vietnam police earlier this week. That's all from me for now Daniel. Korean families are separated again after short three-day reunion

이산가족 눈물의 이별

03:20
Turning now to the last day of inter-Korean reunions at the Mount Kumgang resort in North Korea. The first group of war-separated families has said their goodbyes on the third and final day of the first stage of the reunion event. For a vivid recap of this emotionally-charged day, we turn to Connie Kim. It′s yet another heartbreaking goodbye…. Eyes are filled with tears and hands are tightly held, as families hold onto their final moments before being separated again, possibly forever. ″There is nothing more to wish for. We have to meet again and again and again. That′s all there is left. I don′t wish for anything more.″ This is probably the last time Lee Jeong-sook will see her father. She whispers something she′s always had in her heart, but has been unable to say for so long. ″I′ll love you forever, Dad.″ For everyone, it′s a dream come true,... but one that was far too short. ″I never imagined you′d be alive and that we′d get to meet.″ It′s an emotional time,... a time they will remember forever. Afraid of not being able to say everything on the last day, one man had written his father a letter several pages long. ″Thank you so much. Let′s meet again when the two Koreas are reunified.″ In their final session, family pictures were taken for the first time in more than 60 years, family trees were reconstructed, and some families exchanged promise rings as mementos of their time together. For these families, every minute must have felt like a second,... and all too soon an announcement tells them the time they′ve been wanting to avoid,.... has finally come. ″We′re sorry, but the reunions will come to an end in 10 minutes.″ On the buses, ready to depart, the families reach out for one another,... trying to hold on until the last possible moment. ″You have to stay healthy. Promise me you will stay alive until reunification″ ″I love you.″ ″Please stay well so we can meet again.″ As they say their last goodbyes, there are cries of sorrow, as the families don′t know when,... or if,... this will be their last embrace. As the buses move away,... it′s too hard to bear for many... and some are unable to speak. So far 19-thousand Koreans have been reunited with one another, but given the timing, it′s estimated that the majority of separated family members will have passed away within the next 25 years. ″For everyone to be reunited with their loved ones, at least six thousand people must meet every year. That′s led to growing calls for the reunions to be held on a regular basis, beyond the politics of the two Koreas. Connie Kim, Arirnag News.″

South and North Korea face off in hockey... but also come together on the ice

02:50
역사적인 남북 아이스하키대결…빙판 녹인 감동의 '통일 염원' The diplomatic relationship between South and North Korea continues to worsen, but on Thursday night, those differences were put to the side for an ice hockey match between the two in the South's Gangwon-do province. Kwon Jang-ho was there for the historic match and filed this report. Two Koreas, one rink. In a rare sporting contest between two sides technically still at war with each other, the South and North Korean women's ice hockey teams faced-off at the Gangneung Hockey Center on Thursday. It's the first time in three years that any athlete from the North has stepped foot on this side of the inter-Korean border, and the contest has been hotly anticipated. Another ballistic missile test carried out by Pyongyang earlier this week once again brought a dark cloud over the relationship, but that tension couldn't be found here. "Several thousand spectators have come to watch this rare inter-Korean clash. Of course there are no supporters who have come from North Korea, but what's noticeable is that the crowds are not only cheering for the home team." Many in the audience waved symbolic flags of a unified Korea -- as North Korean flags are banned in the South -- while singing and chanting songs of unification. There are many of our supporters, so it felt right to support North Korea. By cheering them on, it will hopefully give them strength. We are the same people so we should support both sides. We are one nation divided and I wanted my children to understand and experience that first hand. It was a physical and nervy game, but South Korea came out comfortable three-nothing winners. Although the disappointment was evident on the faces of the North Korean players, they were gracious in defeat, leaving a memorable impression on the audience and the South Korean players. "We are the same people, so to have had this duel here in Korea like this, makes me feel proud and good." "I was definitely a little more nervous for this game. I mean like you said, it is North Korea, so it's kind of more of a rivalry, so to say. So yea it definitely did feel...prepared a little different for this game but also trying to treat it like any other." A coincidence in international sporting schedules means another North-South clash is set to take place. The South Korean women's football team is currently in Pyongyang playing in the Asian Cup qualifiers, and will face the North Korean team on Friday. It'll be the first inter-Korean football match in North Korea for 27 years. Despite the ongoing geopolitical conflict between the two countries, sport continues to act as a meeting ground where the people from the two sides can connect. Kwon Jang-ho, Arirang News, Gangneung. Gyeongju Historical Area, where Silla Dynasty comes to life

03:46
경주 역사 지구, 신라왕조가 살아나는 곳 Sculptures, reliefs, pagodas, and the remains of temples. The Gyeongju Historic Areas contain a remarkable concentration of Korean Buddhist art... particularly from the 7th to 10th centuries. Our Hwang Hojun introduces us to the Gyeongju Historic Areas: Korea's UNESCO World Heritage. It's the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom. And it continues to tell the story of the golden kingdom, even today. The Gyeongju Historic Area is divided into five distinct areas, the Namsan Belt, the Wolsong Belt, the Tumuli Belt, the Hwangnyongsa Belt and the Sanseong Belt, where one can experience the birth and fall of Silla. There are ten criteria UNESCO uses to assess whether a heritage candidate has outstanding universal value. To be included on the World Heritage List, sites must meet at least one of the ten selection criteria. The Gyeongju Historic Area was selected as a World Heritage Site in 2000 after meeting two of the criteria... exhibiting evidence of interchange of human values, and bearing exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization which has disappeared. "There is abundant evidence that Silla played a crucial role in the cultural communication in East Asia, Gyeongju being the final destination of the Maritime Silk Road. Moreover, the city bears some archaeological significance as it preserves the features of the ancient kingdom's capital." To name a few... One cannot miss the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, in the Tumuli belt of the area, because of the numerous and prominent burial mounds containing the tombs of kings and nobles. Since excavation started in the 1970s, over 40,000 relics have been found, including royal crowns and golden accessories. One of the tombs rose to fame after a painting of a winged horse on birch bark was discovered. The tombs not only demonstrate the lavish lifestyle of the royals, but the some excavated artifacts, including those made out of glass, show us Silla was more than just a kingdom sitting on the east end of Asia. Rather, it was a country that actively traded with countries in the West, including Persian countries and even Rome. Cheomseongdae, the world's oldest surviving observatory stands in the Wolseong Belt of the district. "By measuring the position of the sunlight shining through the small window on Cheomseongdae, it was possible to keep track of the 24 seasonal divisions, which was crucial for an agrarian society." Built in the 7th century, Cheomseongdae's symmetrical and round structure, along with its deep pit filled with gravel and sand, made the ancient observatory earthquake-resistant. As a matter of fact, it even survived the magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit Gyeongju last Monday. Countless remnants of Silla, including the old palace site, give visitors the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the kingdom's past glories. "They built so many beautiful buildings and a beautiful town. This was really impressive. Yes. Most impressive to see what is like a possible in the past. What was possible in the past." The city itself is an open-air museum... a treasure trove that testifies to the unique, artistic, and international identity of the millennium-long Silla Dynasty. Hwang Hojun, Arirang News, Gyeongju. First submarine export as S. Korea hands over vessel to Indonesia

02:02
잠수함 첫 수출...세계 5번째 수출국 South Korea is set to become a part of an exclusive club: Nations that export submarines. Quite a rapid transition considering Seoul first received the technology to build such vessels just 3 decades ago. Cho Sungmin dissect the significance of this maiden event. A Korean-built submarine rolls out to sea. Next stop: Indonesia. This submarine, named 'Nagapasa' , is ready for a handover to Indonesia's Ministry of Defense at a shipyard in Geoje , a city in Gyeongsangnam-do province. Nagapasa can travel for 19-thousand-kilometers, a round trip between Korea and Los Angeles, without making any stop at a port, and is also equipped with eight offensive torpedo tubes, along with other cutting-edge weaponry. Indonesian Defense Minister, Ryamizard Ryacudu said he is pleased with the submarine. "I am expecting that this 1,400-ton submarine will act as a key strategic weapon for our maritime security in Indonesia." As Daewoo Shipbuilding & Engineering delivers this submarine to Indonesia, it marks the first submarine export by a Korean company. Daewoo took on a one-point-one-billion U.S. dollar contract in 2011 to provide Indonesia with three submarines, the other two of which are currently under construction. "We believe that we can guarantee the cost of the technology we have invested in. We hope our technology can contribute to the Korean navy as well as continuing our partnership with the Indonesian navy." The handover of the vessel is regarded as a Korean success in commercializing the technology which the country first received from Germany in 1988. In the space of just 30 years, Korea has developed its submarine industry to the extent that it is now a submarine exporting nation. With the sale of these three vessels, Korea, joins an elite group of submarine exporting countries, including the U.K., France, Russia and Germany. Won Jung-hwan, Arirang News. Singapore hosting first-ever N. Korea-U.S. summit -- why Singapore?

02:17
북미정상회담 개최지가 싱가포르인 이유 From Switzerland to the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom... there were numerous nominees. But in the end it was the tiny but mighty island city that was chosen as the backdrop for the upcoming summit. Oh Jung-hee outlines some of the reasons that make Singapore an ideal venue for the historic event. Out of several candidate locations, it's finally down to one: Singapore. What makes Singapore a favorable location for both Pyongyang and Washington is that the Southeast Asian country is diplomatically neutral. It has good relations with North Korea and the U.S., and both countries have embassies there. Before international sanctions took full effect early last year,... Singapore had been at the center of North Korea's overseas economic activities. But at the same time, it is also home to a U.S. naval base,... where American ships and aircraft make regular visits... and several are stationed. Singapore is also close enough to North Korea for the regime's planes to make a non-stop flight. And the country is well-practiced in hosting international events,... with the Asia Security Summit Shangri-La Dialogue taking place every year. The U.S. actually preferred Singapore more than North Korea did, due to Singapore's security and infrastructure... as well as the political burden that would follow if the summit were held at Panmunjom or Pyongyang. And as North Korea has close relations with Singapore,... it seems that Pyongyang chose not to drag on with a tug-of-war over the summit location but jump into the real business of the talks. "Basically, it's difficult for North Korea to grant a so-called 'big present' to the U.S., which would be complete denuclearization. And in that sense, there's no reason for President Trump to set his foot in Pyongyang. Third countries would have been considered, but China, Russia, and Mongolia which are geographically close to North Korea aren't much of a favorable choice for the U.S." Singapore's foreign ministry welcomed the decision, saying the country is pleased to host the summit talks between President Trump and North Korea's Kim. It added the country hopes the summit serves to (quote)"advance prospects for peace" on the Korean Peninsula. Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News. Possible hotels for Kim and Trump say their bookings are full, but security is not too tight yet

02:31
북미정상회담 2주 앞두고, 정상들 유력 숙소 앞 분위기는? So with less than two weeks away from the second North Korea-U.S. summit.... Vietnam's foreign minister and protocol chief wrapped up their visit to the North on Thursday. And now, we're expecting the two negotiating sides and Vietnam to put their summit preparations into high gear. For more, let's connect to our Lee Ji-won, who is in the host city of Hanoi. Ji-won, tell us where you are .... and do you see any signs that preparations have already started? Ji-yoon, I'm standing in front of the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. It's one of the places where North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is likely to stay during his summit with President Trump. The security isn't tight here yet. But when I asked the hotel reception about room availability, they said they cannot take reservations from February 25th to 28th, because it's almost full and also as they have (quote) "delegations staying here." When I tried to confirm if she means the North Korean delegation will be staying in the hotel, she said it's confidential. There are a number of other places that have been mentioned for Kim's stay, including the Melia Hanoi and the State Guest house that's located very close to the North Korean embassy. But when we called the Melia Hanoi, they said the delegation will be staying elsewhere,... and neither seemed to have any ongoing preparations for a state leader's visit, from what we saw outside. Now, yesterday we also went to the JW Marriott Hotel, that's where President Trump is widely expected to stay. The security wasn't too tight there yet. But we did have some difficulties. We were approached by hotel personnel, telling us that we can only film the hotel close up with our phones. The Vietnam National Convention Center, just next to JW Marriott, seemed to be tighter on security. It's speculated to be the summit venue,... but we were blocked from passing by the street next to it, or filming it. Okay then Ji-won how is the atmosphere, are Vietnamese people excited for this historic event? Well Ji-yoon we went to the North Korean embassy late last night, but there was no significant sign of preparations. And, locals here don't really seem to be aware or that bothered of the upcoming summit They all seem to be going about their daily lives. That's all from me for now Ji-yoon but I'll be updating you throughout the day. Korean scientists develop manufacturing technology for eco-friendly algae bioplastics

01:49
미역이 고성능 플라스틱으로…친환경 제작 기술 개발 A Korean research team has developed the technology to manufacture eco-friendly bioplastics using seaweed. Not only is seaweed naturally derived and inexpensive, the new material reduces the amount of harmful byproducts emitted during the manufacturing process. Park Se-young has more. High-performance plastics are found in cars, airplanes and smartphones and demand for them is growing. The global market for the material is estimated to grow from around 15 billion U.S. dollars this year... to over 35 billion by 2026. On the downside, the material is manufactured at high temperatures using toxic materials, emitting lots of environmental pollutants in the process. But that could soon change... if the work of a local research team proves successful. They've developed the technology to produce eco-friendly bioplastics using seaweed. This technique is the first of its kind to use lipids from algae. "The existing process requires high temperatures and pressure and uses strong oxidizers, but we've reduced the level of energy consumption and formation of environmental pollutants." The new production process happens at room temperature and doesn't require any exceptional pressure conditions, reducing the amount of harmful byproducts. To do it, the researchers extracted fat and fatty acid from dried green algae. Then, an enzyme reaction of the fats created carboxylic acid, a material used to manufacture high-performance plastic. Going forward, the research team plans to develop the technology for mass production of the material and take its invention to the market. Park Se-young, Arirang News. Duterte sends troops to disputed South China Sea

01:57
'친중' 두테르테 변심했나…"남중국해 섬•암초에 병력 배치" The controversial leader of the Philippines has ordered troops to occupy uninhabited islands and reefs the country claims in the disputed South China Sea. The move is expected to anger China, which claims almost all of the territory and has been building artificial islands in the area. For more on this and other news in East Asia...let's turn to Ro Aram... Aram... this is a bold move by Rodrigo Duterte, especially after relations between the Philippines and China seemed to be improving... Well Jihye, Duterte has once joked during his campaign that he would jet ski to one of China's artificial islands to assert Manila's claim to the region. But, after taking office, as you said, he has tried to mend strained ties with Beijing in recent months. During his visit to China his rhetoric was very anti-U.S. and pro-Beijing. He's even previously said he would set aside a ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration that ruled in favor of the Philippines' claims against China's so-called "nine dash line" in the South China Sea in order for closer bilateral ties. But, Thursday's order to send his troops to occupy uninhabited islands will likely anger China and his efforts for closer ties will face hurdles. Duterte also said he might visit the Philippine-controlled island of Thitu to raise the national flag there on the country's Independence Day, which falls on June 12th. Speaking to reporters during a visit to a military base in Palawan, near the disputed waters, Duterte said everyone was making a grab for the islands, so his country should live there to claim what's already the country's territory. Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan also claim sovereignty in the strategic area. The Philippine leader's order also comes ahead of the U.S.-China summit, during which the South China issue will also likely be discussed. Camp Fire kills 31, becoming California’s deadliest wildfire since 1991

01:52
美서부 산불 피해지역 '악마의 강풍'과 사투…"24시간이 고비" The wildfires in California that have killed dozens and have caused thousands to be evacuated could grow even bigger. The U.S. Fire Department is concerned that the fires could continue for weeks. Hong Yoo has the details. Camp Fire, the most destructive wildfire in California's history shows no sign of abating with strong, dry winds making the weather optimal for the Northern California fire to spread for at least another day. The wildfire, which started on November 8th, has killed more than thirty people, and with more than 200 others missing, the number of casualties is likely to increase. Most victims were found near Paradise, California. More than 300-thousand people have been forced from their homes statewide. "I think it's burned. I think it's burned because it's [the] neighbor's house as I see, it's already started to burn." As well as Camp Fire, there are two other wildfires that have broken out in Southern California. The Hill Fire and the Woolsey Fire have destroyed 179 structures and are threatening 57,000 more. "The only thing that we're not concerned about is the ocean. So other than that we're extremely concerned. We've asked our citizens to evacuate, we have all available firefighters out there and all perimeters and all unburned areas of this fire trying to protect the structures and put the fire out. " The return of powerful winds is impeding firefighters from containing the fires, especially the Woolsey Fire in Southern California. These winds are known as the "devil's wind" for giving life to wildfires of a tremendous scale. Currently, about 3 thousand firefighters are battling the blazes. The U.S. Fire Department said it will take more than three weeks to fully contain the three fires. Hong Yoo, Arirang News. 2019 celebrates the Year of the Golden Pig, which comes every 60 years

01:54
'재물과 복의 상징' 돼지..."올해는 진짜 황금돼지해" The Year of the Golden Pig has dawned. People in South Korea are hoping for better luck in 2019 as pigs symbolize abundance and good fortune. Our Kim Hyo-sun delves deeper into the meaning of the Year of the Golden Pig. Pigs are seen as a symbol of wealth and good fortune in Korea as they give birth to many piglets. During the 1970s and 80s, barber shops in Korea had images of pigs on their walls,... hoping to attract more customers. Coin banks have also long been in the shape of pigs. "Known to be fertile animals, pigs are often associated with abundance, and thus many believe that those born in the year of the pig will live a prosperous life. " The Chinese character for 'home' is a combination of a modern character that represents a house on the top and a character below that represents a pig. Likewise, people have domesticated pigs for a long time. In Korea, pigs were used as sacrifice for memorial rituals for ancestors, and were a precious food source for the Korean people. As 2019 is the Year of the Pig, and it's an Earth Pig year,... according to the Sexagenary cycle,... better known as ganzhi that consists of a combination of a color and an animal. Earth Pig also symbolizes yellow, or gold,... and this is why 2019 is the Year of the Golden Pig, which comes just once every 60 years. "2007 was the Year of the Red Pig, but it was marketed as the Year of the Golden Pig. But, this year is definitely the Year of the Golden Pig according to the Chinese zodiac. " Thus, people in Korea are hoping to benefit from some lady luck in 2019. Kim Hyo-sun, Arirang News. Koreans transforming traditional hanok houses for 21st-century living

04:24
피디리포트: 한국 한옥의 현대화 & 재조명 Built from the time of the Chosun dynasty from 1392 to 1910, hanok are single-storey houses made of wood and stone, featuring tiled roofs, wooden pillars, paper windows, a small courtyard and floor heating. They started disappearing in the 1970s and 1980s... but they are making a comeback. More hanoks are being refurbished for modern living.... a unique blend of tradition and modern day convenience our News feature tonight with Kim Jungsoo. Korea's traditional houses, or hanok, have long been known for their grace and natural beauty, but modern-day Koreans often see them more as tourist attractions than as places to live. The general perception is that hanok can't contain heat very well and are incompatible with the technological advances now synonymous with modern life. "For a long time, traditional Korean hanok couldn't compete with Western-style buildings that were designed for economic efficiency. But perceptions of hanok began changing in the early 2000s, when more Koreans started to recognize the benefits of living in a nature-friendly environment. Until seven or eight years ago, people simply renovated existing hanok, but since then, there have been more attempts to build modernized hanok from the ground up." Bae Yun-mok's house in Eunpyung-gu District's new hanok village is a good example. On the outside, it looks no different from a traditional hanok - as if it has been frozen in time - but once inside, one can tell the house has been carefully designed to accomodate the owner's unique lifestyle and aesthetic tastes. "My family and I lived in an apartment for more than 20 years, and I grew tired of feeling hemmed-in every time I came back from work. Having lived in this modernized hanok for more than a year, I can say that I made the right decision." While modernized hanok offer the same kind of psychological comfort as traditional ones, some key differences are apparent at first glance. For one thing, this hanok is two stories instead of one. Experts say Joseon-era hanok rarely had more than one floor, as it was considered a sacrilege to live in a place higher than the king's palace. Plus, there was little need to worry about space. "In the Joseon Dynasty, the population was smaller, so there was less pressure to be frugal about land. But now, it's necessary to make the most out of the available space. What's more, there was no guarantee that heat could be transferred to the top floor, which further discouraged two-story buildings." That doesn't mean that modernized hanok have completely discarded what made traditional hanok so special: When it's warm out, Mr. Bae and his family -- his wife, his two sons and his mother -- simply go out to the madang, where they can commune with nature and talk to one another. But families aren't the only beneficiaries. "The modern version comes in a variety of sizes, too, like this hanok in central Seoul made for a single occupant." Song Moon-sook, the owner of this "urban" hanok, which is about 30 square meters, says that she was first struck by the beauty of hanok houses when she visited Seochon hanok village on a rainy day some four years ago. "I remember sitting in the madang of one hanok, and the sight and scent of nature had a particular impact on me. So I had the word hanok engraved in my memory when I started my journey to get a new home." Song recalls that it was necessary to find an architect who could understand her desire for a house that replicated a hanok's traditional beauty, while also satisfying her need for modern conveniences. "My client told me that she wanted the hanok to be designed around her comfort, and not the other way around. So it looks like an ordinary hanok on the outside, but inside it has a modern framework for heating and security purposes. It's conversations like these, between residents and architects, that are ushering in a new generation of modern hanok equipped with state-of-the-art technology. But perhaps more importantly, these new hanok are helping Koreans rediscover the meaning of the "good life" -- one that is carefully attuned to nature and history. Kim Jung-soo, Arirang News. N. Korean, Chinese media confirm Kim Jong-un's four-day visit to China

02:31
北•中매체, 김정은 7~10일 방중 확인... 통일부 "北매체 당일보도 특이" Our top story this morning. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is in China for the fourth time, for another summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. North Korean and Chinese state media have confirmed the news... and reported that Xi invited Kim over. For more, let's connect to our unification ministry correspondent Oh Jung-hee, standing by on the line. Jung-hee, fill us in. Ji-yoon, you're absolutely right. North Korea's Korean Central News Agency and China's Xinhua News Agency have both reported this morning that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is visiting China for four days from January 7th to January 10th. And we're hearing just now that Kim Jong-un arrived in Beijing. Chinese President Xi Jinping invited Kim Jong-un. And along with Kim, his wife Ri Sol-ju and top aides from the regime including Kim Yong-chol and a couple of key foreign affairs officials like Ri Su-yong and Ri Yong-ho went to Beijing as well. This is Kim Jong-un's fourth visit to China. He met with Xi Jinping three times last year -- once before his first summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in,... once before his June summit with U.S. President Donald Trump,... and once right after the Singapore summit. All in all, Kim met Xi roughly a month before the big events. So, Kim's Beijing visit this time raises the question of whether we're close to seeing a second Pyeongyang-Washington summit or Kim's cross-border visit to South Korea any time soon. Recently, Washington has been creating the atmosphere for another North Korea-U.S. summit. And Kim Jong-un took with him some key officials related to the nuclear negotiations... so it's highly likely that Kim and Xi will share opinions on the denuclearization talks. Involving China in the signing of the peace treaty could be another talking point... as Kim Jong-un, through his New Year's Address,... called for multilateral negotiations to end the decades-long war. But we don't know exactly when Kim and Xi will have their summit. During his stay, watchers believe,... Kim could also tour around some industrial facilities in China, in view of his focus on economic development. Seoul says it's aware of Kim's visit to China. And it assessed that it's quite noteworthy that Pyeongyang's state media revealed the news that Kim is away to China... while he was still on his way there. In the case of the past three visits, the agency reported the news on the last day of the visit or after the visit. That's all I have for now, but I'll be watching the story develop and bring you more updates later on. Back to you, Ji-yoon. Road to Rio: Taekwondo makes Olympic changes to upgrade its global reputation

04:08
가자 리우로: 올림픽 태권도 명성 높이기 위한 변화 It's been 28 years since the Korean martial art, Taekwondo, made its debut on the Olympic arena. Although its popularity has grown around the world since then, it's still under pressure to grow and improve, as another set of rule changes have been introduced for next month's Rio games. Kwon Jang-ho walks us through some of them and why for Taekwondo's governing body, change is good. Fast, powerful and gravity defying. Taekwondo is arguably one of the most dynamic and exciting martial arts in the world, and it's been an Olympic staple since it first appeared at the 1988 Seoul Games. But it's had to weather some difficult times. Inaccurate judging, overly-defensive tactics, and spectator dissatisfaction had fueled rumors of the sport being dropped from the Olympic lineup in the past. Taekwondo's governing body, the World Taekwondo Federation, has taken steps to address these issues over the last few years through rule changes, electronic scoring systems and video refereeing. A number of the new changes will be introduced at the Rio Olympics. The first thing audiences will notice is the ring. Before London 2012 it used to be a 10-by-10-meter square, and now it's changed to an 8-meter octagon. By taking off the corners and making it smaller, it's aimed at discouraging defensive tactics and making the fights more exciting. "With the octagon ring there's nowhere to hide, so you can't be constantly circling the ring to run away. So it does mean there will be more clashes." There are also other changes. "At the last Olympics, in order to make scoring more accurate, they introduced these electronic sensors in the footpads and body armor. This year they've also introduced sensors to the helmet." This is crucial, as a kick or a punch to the body is worth 1 to 3 points, but a kick to the head is worth 3 to 4 points. They've also upgraded the number of sensors in the footpads, but at the same time, they've upped the sensitivity threshold of the body armor, so only a cleaner, stronger hit will register as a point. As you can see here, that threshold is quite high, so the kinds of weaker, tactical kicks that drew criticism at the last Olympics won't work. "You need to be quick to find space to make your attack, and then you need power to make the hit count and score. So you need that combination of speed and power to get points." "All the athletes have been working a lot with the electronic scoring systems. I myself have been training to find the best way to register hits without wasting energy." The success of these changes has been deemed important for the credibility of the sport, as controversial decisions have plagued the sport in the past. "Fair and transparency of refereeing is very important. So we are really trying to encourage our international referees. We already did two time for the special referee seminars for the preparing for the Rio Olympic Games." Every Olympics has seen changes to the taekwondo format, but the president of the World Taekwondo Federation says they are needed in order for the sport to survive and keep growing. There are now 206 national taekwondo associations around the world, and the world's best competitors are no longer just in Korea, but hail from Great Britain to Iran and Uzbekistan. But to become a truly responsible and global body, the federation felt that it also had more work to do outside of the ring. Last year, it launched the Taekwondo Humanitarian Fund, which aims to bring the martial art to refugees in Jordan, Nepal and around the world, in order to empower and inspire... aspiring athletes. In the near future, Korea will not only be rooting for its taekwondo stars to win gold in Rio, it will also be looking for an exciting and successful tournament that can both elevate the reputation of the Korean martial art and further establish it as a truly global sport. The fourth industrial revolution and the future of jobs

04:29
4차 산업혁명 - 미래일자리 As evidenced by drastic developments in AI... change is underway. "A perfect storm of business model change in all industries, resulting in major disruptions to labor markets." That is what's expected in the near future... according to the World Economic Forum's report on the future of jobs. How so and what needs to be done to better prepare ourselves for this rapid change? Our News Feature tonight... with Kwon Jang-ho. "SIRI, remind me to pick up my dry cleaning after work today. SIRI can be a useful tool, though it's not really ready to replace the role of a human personal assistant yet. But that's where the technology is heading." At the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, Stuart Russell, a leading expert in computer science, suggested that in the future, artificial intelligence would become the ideal personal assistant, perform better than humans, and be available to all. "We're talking about a system which is there on your shoulder and can provide advice, and can help you navigate the complicated world." But perhaps that future is already here. A study last year found that between 2001 and 2013, personal assistant jobs in the U.K. had fallen by 45-percent. Other occupations such as library assistants and travel agents also saw huge declines. The report concluded that the losses were mainly among jobs where productivity had been greatly improved by technology. "Jobs which are standardized, repetitive, and involve patterns, are jobs that will be taken over by artificial intelligence and robots. For instance, in the U.S., 75-percent of Wall Street trading is being made by computers. Even in journalism, sports and finance news reports can be produced by AI autonomously." Researchers at the University of Oxford in 2013 said that 47-percent of jobs in the U.S. could potentially be done solely by machines within 10-20 years. The study also said that any job that involves little social intelligence, creativity, and perception is at risk. Further studies showed that Korea is at a higher risk of losing jobs, as it has been estimated that 63-percent of the country's workforce could be computerized. "Our research found that it is a very risky situation, far more so than that in the U.S. and other developed countries. The reason is because the ratio of Korean jobs that involve simple manual skills or office administration work is higher than other places." But the research paper offers hope in that new fields will open up, especially in IT and software development. The social business networking site LinkedIn put together a list of the top 10 job-titles that barely existed before 2008. 8 out of 10 were from digital industries, with IOS and Android software developers coming out on top. Academics and business leaders agree that the changing nature of the job market in general cannot be stopped and that the next task in hand is for society to adapt to such changes. [14:50] "Those already working will need to go through a re-education. Moreover, they need to study new fields in order to survive, and for that, universities and the government need to provide related courses or financial support." "I think re-training is the responsibility for the corporation. If we know the future, and I think we are almost crystal clear that we know the future, that's what we're talking about, then we have to start retraining the people. And also we have to work with the government to really create the future talent to be more adaptive to the future trend." "The fourth industrial revolution is coming. It should make life a little easier, better, more productive. But for some of us, that might not happen if jobs and our livelihoods become collateral damage. To prepare for it, more steps need to be taken by governments, businesses and, of course, ourselves. Kwon Jang-Ho, Arirang News." Shoko Asahara, head of Aum Shinrikyo cult behind Tokyo gas attack executed

01:41
'옴진리교' 교주 아사하라, 사형 집행 Over in Japan, back in 1995, devout followers of a doomsday cult carried out simultaneous attacks using Saring never gas Tokyo's subway system, killing 13 and injuring thousands. Today, the man who founded the doomsday group and masterminded the horrific act, is executed, along with several of the zealots that followed his every command. He leaves behind many questions regarding the Aum Shinrikyo cult... unanswered Seo Bo-bin has the full story. Shoko Asahara, the mastermind of the deadliest terrorist incident in Japan, has been executed on Friday along with 6 of his followers. Asahara, whose real name was Chizuo Matsumoto, founded the Aum Shinrikyo cult which was behind the 1995 Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system. Cult members released the Sarin on the subway in the Japanese capital. The attack killed 13 people and injured more than 6-thousand others. Members of the Aum cult were prosecuted, and 13 of them were sentenced to death, including Asahara. The 7 convicts on Friday were executed in Tokyo by hanging on Friday morning. The Japanese government doesn't give prior notice of executions, but they were later confirmed by the justice ministry. Six others are still on the death row. Asahara was sentenced to death in 2004,.... but his execution was not carried out until now when the verdict against all accused and accomplices were final, with no pending appeals left against any of the group. The Aum Shinrikyo cult began in the 1980s as a spiritual group mixing Hindu and Buddhist beliefs, and Asahara declared himself to be both Christ and the first "enlightened one" since Buddha, and had thousands of followers worldwide before it was declared a terrorist group after the 1995 attack. This suggests that the Vietnamese delegation's main talking point with Pyeongyang will be inviting Kim Jong-un for a state visit. Before the venue for the Kim-Trump summit was determined, the Vietnamese government had recommended its capital Hanoi... partially to have Kim Jong-un as a state guest. It would be the first time for a North Korean leader to visit Vietnam in over 50 years. The late former North Korean leader Kim Il-sung, who's Kim Jong-un's grandfather, visited Hanoi two times in 1958 and 1964. So if a state visit does happen, then there could be a North Korea-Vietnam summit as well... before or after the one with the U.S. Alongside ironing out the details on that front, other matters will likely be on the table, such as the places Kim Jong-un will visit, where he'll say and which routes he should take. The Vietnamese delegation might also pay a courtesy visit to Kim Jong-un. After this meeting in Pyeongyang, the director of North Korea's State Affairs Commission, Kim Chang-son, could make his way to Hanoi... for a look around the venue just like he did before the Singapore summit. Koreans embrace latest hanbok fashions

03:10
한복에 패션을 더하다!,... 끊임없는 한복의 아름다운 변신 The traditional Korean costume known as hanbok is always evolving, and each generation seems to have its own version. Back in the 60s,... before Western clothing became common, Koreans used to wear gaeryang, or modern, hanbok. The current version updates the style with different fabrics and a slimmer silhouette. This pop-up shop is one of many around Seoul featuring the latest style. It carries everything from casual shirts to special occasion dresses, showing off the hanbok's many variations. (Standup) "This is a hanbok designed to be worn as a cocktail dress. It has the elements of a traditional hanbok, but the patterns and lines are fancier and more contemporary, reflecting the latest fashion trends." The traditional colors and trendy styles on display attract a steady stream of customers. (Korean) "These hanbok look more comfortable and are easier to move around in than the traditional kind,... but they also embody Korean beauty and still have a traditional feel." The designers say practicality and affordability are also a factor -- like these hanbok for young children. (Korean) "Hanbok are not cheap,... and because babies grow fast, it can be a burden to parents. Our hanbok sleeves can be extended based on a child's growth." (Korean) "The idea that this hanbok can be worn for a longer time is really nice. It also looks pretty cute." Globally, the latest hanbok are already attracting attention on the runway, with several leading brands showcasing their interpretations at fashion shows in cities worldwide. But the popularity of these more modern styles has also elicited a gentle reminder from hanbok traditionalists. (Korean) "It's great that these new fashion hanbok are making hanbok more accessible to young people. But the real, traditional hanbok need to be preserved the way they are. The costume consists of several layers with small details... and all of the layers have to be worn for a perfect traditional hanbok look." The traditional aspect is something that hanbok designers say is an important jumping off point for their creations. (Korean) "Clothes must not remain in the past,.. but develop with each successive generation. They must also reflect the designer and his or her thoughts, but, of course, with an understanding of the original, traditional hanbok." Lee Ji-won, Arirang News. Kim Jong-un on his way to Hanoi by train, expected to arrive Tues. morning

02:40
김정은 열차로 하노이행...하롱베이• 박닌성 산단 방문할듯 And now, over to our Park Hee-jun who's at the Sofitel Legend Metropole,... a possible venue for the North Korea-U.S. summit. So Hee-jun, we're hearing that Kim Jong-un is heading to Hanoi on his heavily armored train. Tell us more about his route to Vietnam. The North Korean leader is on his way to the Vietnamese capital for his second face-to-face with U.S. President Donald Trump. He left Pyeongyang on Saturday afternoon, according to North Korea's official state media. The distance from Pyeongyang to Hanoi is about 45-hundred kilometers. So it will take him two to three days to reach Hanoi. Kim is expected to stop at Dong Dang Station in Lang Son,... the Vietnamese city on the border with China,... where he's likely to take a car for the final leg of his journey. And Ji-yoon, I was at Dong Dang Station yesterday,... and was able to witness some busy scenes. Government officials were overseeing the renovation of the station. Employees were busy tidying up the exterior. And security was evidently tightened,... with every corner of the city being patrolled by police officers. Even on the way to Lang Son district,... I saw them stationed at major intersections. Some were even using bomb detectors. I was able to speak to a railway official,... who confirmed that they're expecting Kim to arrive Tuesday morning. Take a listen. "We heard that the North Korean leader will use this station for the North Korea-U.S. summit. We were told to get this station into the best condition. We don’t know the exact time, but we’re expecting him on the 26th." And could Kim Jong-un visit a couple of key places in the country before arriving in Hanoi. Can you tell us anything about that? Well everything's being kept tightly under wraps. But we do have some ideas. Kim could visit Ha Long Bay, a popular tourist destination. He's well known for his interest in the tourism industry. And Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts some 10-thousand tourists a day. His grandfather Kim Il-sung also paid a visit there in 1964. Another likely choice is Bac Ninh Province, where there's a Samsung Electronics smartphone factory. The North's Kim Chang-son who's in charge of protocol also reportedly toured the area. And it's actually considered a symbol of Vietnam's Doi Moi policy-- Vietnam's economic reforms in the 1980s. Hai Phong is another economic powerhouse. The port city is also home to some South Korean companies, including LG Electronics. And also Vietnam's first automobile brand VinFast. It's highly likely that he'll stop by at least one of these places before reaching Hanoi Tuesday. Ji-yoon. Thank you so much guys for that. Those were our reporters Lee Ji-won and Park Hee-jun reporting live from Hanoi. Tump wins American election by sweeping swing states

02:35
미 대선 결과 America has chosen its next leader... and it is... Donald J. Trump. In one of the most shocking U.S. elections in modern political history, Donald Trump has defeated Hillary Clinton. Polls were wrong, surveys, reports were all misleading. How did Donald Trump strip down Clinton's blue wall? Let's go to our Lee Unshin at Arirang's election center: Unshin, what happened? How did pollsters get it so wrong? Connyoung, your guess is as good as mine. But, the bottom line is... with at least 278 electoral votes... Donald Trump is set to become America's next leader. And it wasn't even close -- Hillary Clinton's numbers were at 218. As you've said, almost all the projections we have been following turned out to be wrong, so let's take a look at the comprehensive breakdown of what happened on November 8th. To begin with, many states tend to be solidly red or blue, such as Texas and California... and these big states with big numbers of Electoral votes were a given for both candidates from the start. So it really all came down to the 11 so-called swing states, where both candidates made their final efforts into campaigning 'til the very end. Trump and Clinton were neck-and-neck until late at night on Tuesday, but as the results came in from those battleground states, the advantage for Trump became clear. Around 11 p.m. local time, the biggest bombshells of the night came in, as media outlets called three states for Trump: Florida, North Carolina and Ohio. Together, they ended up giving 62 electoral votes to Trump, and leading to some early celebrations for Republicans who started to smell victory. It was a close race in Florida, 49 to 47-point-7 percent... a big disappointment for Democrats, as they were really counting on the state where President Obama won in the last two elections... just like the state of Ohio. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Trump reached 244 votes, and Clinton had just 215 -- and remember those INCLUDE the 55 she got from California -- so at that point Trump's victory became almost certain. Clinton claimed Virginia, Colorado and Nevada, but Trump carried on to sweep more purple states, sealing his victory in Pennsylvania, another big loss of 20 votes for Clinton -- and an unexpected one. Pennsylvania had gone blue for the last 6 consecutive elections, including those of Bill Clinton. What put Trump over the magic number of 270 votes was Alaska and Wisconsin, leaving Clinton far behind, allowing us to go ahead and announce him as the new President-Elect of the United States. K-Pop stars Seungri & Jung Joon-young questioned in sex scandal

02:11
정준영•승리 오늘 동시 소환…'성관계 몰카•성접대' 조사 Two K-pop stars were summoned on Thursday for interrogation at Seoul Police headquarters. Seungri and Jung Joon-young are embroiled in growing sex scandals. KIM Da-mi reports. Police have once again questioned Seungri, now a former member of Korean boyband Bigbang, over allegations that he solicited prostitutes for his potential business partners. This was his first interrogation as a criminal suspect after last month’s questioning as a witness in a case involving the alleged use and distribution of drugs and rape at a Seoul nightclub. Unlike last time, when Seungri said he hopes to uncover the truth, this time he offered an apology. “I apologize to the people who were hurt. Rather than saying anything at this stage, I will sincerely cooperate with the police investigation and respond truthfully.” Seungri is scheduled to enlist in the South Korean military on March 25th, so his case is likely to be transferred to the high court of the armed forces. The Seoul Police and the military, though, have yet to discuss how they will handle the case. Early Thursday morning, singer Jung Joon-young was also questioned over allegations that he secretly filmed himself having sex with several women and that shared the clips with his friends through a mobile group chat. When asked if he has filmed anything recently or used drugs while filming, Jung did not comment but his cooperation with the police. The police said they're considering an arrest warrant for Jung, in view of the seriousness of the allegations. In addition, according to the police, another group chat involving Seungri and Jung Joon-young made around July 2016 mentioned that the police commissioner general “had their backs." "While the former top officer denies any involvement in the case, the National Police Agency said it will launch a special investigation into the allegations that officers turned a blind eye to illegal activities including sexual assaults at the Burning Sun nightclub.
