Fair Trade: Does It Help Poor Workers?
Elizabeth, an Everyday Economics viewer, asks: “How does the purchase of fair-trade goods affect wages in developing countries?” Great question! The “fair trade” movement has become popular as a proposed way to increase living standards in developing countries. In this video, we look at whether fair trade does just that. For a good to be considered “fair trade” it must meet various requirements developed by a handful of fair trade organizations. In the developing world, who is better positioned to meet these fair trade requirements — large producers in wealthier countries or small producers in poorer countries? To answer this question, we take a look at the the example of fair trade coffee produced in both Costa Rica and Ethiopia. How does fair trade affect wages and overall quality of life in those countries? And, if fair trade isn’t the best way to improve living standards in developing countries, how else can we maximize employment options and well-being for poor workers? This question is at the core of an entire branch of economics — Development Economics. To learn more, check out MRU’s Development Economics course. The Fair Trade Story
The Fair Trade Story (5 minutes) is an animated short film that provides a succinct and entertaining introduction to the fair trade movement and why it matters. Across the planet, right now, small-scale farmers and their communities are organizing to empower themselves. Consumers are joining them in solidarity to help tip the balance of power away from exploitative corporations and back to the people. Fair trade is a movement of small-scale farmers organizing to change the terms of trade, access the global marketplace, gain a fair price, and improve the lives of their families and communities. Why Fair Trade is So Important
The frenzied Black Friday scenes are familiar: hordes of customers pushing through the doors to get their hands on that special post-Thanksgiving steal of a purchase. But how many of us know where those items are from? Do we really know how that pair of jeans was made, or who put those shoes together? More than 40 million people work in the garment industry worldwide. As some of the world’s lowest paid workers, they are at the mercy of a system in which many companies strive to maximize profits by paying employees as little as possible. But consumers are beginning to realize the power of their purchases to shape the lives of workers. Patagonia sees this as an opportunity to support the people behind the product and work toward wage equity in the supply chain. And this commitment goes beyond just a few token factories or a new marketing campaign. It is a growing movement that strives to do the right thing, even when it’s difficult or less immediately profitable to do so. Here’s how it works. What global trade deals are really about (hint: it's not trade) | Haley Edwards | TEDxMidAtlantic
TPP, NAFTA, GAAT, WTO -- the concepts that govern our global economy and international trade are confusing to say the least, but affect us all. And why is there so much conflict around trade deals, which became a focal point during the 2016 US Presidential election? Haley Edwards breaks down the history of trade and explains how the idea of global trade has transformed in the past decades. Haley Edwards is an author and correspondent at TIME. Her book, Shadow Courts: The Tribunals That Rule Global Trade came out in 2016. Previously, she was an editor at the Washington Monthly and a foreign correspondent in the Middle East and the former Soviety Union, where she reported for the Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, The New Republic, and other publications. She studied philosophy at Yale University and journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Globalization and Trade and Poverty: Crash Course Economics #16
What is globalization? Is globalization a good thing or not. Well, I have an answer that may not surprise you: It's complicated. This week, Jacob and Adriene will argue that globalization is, in aggregate, good. Free trade and globalization tend to provide an overall benefit, and raises average incomes across the globe. The downside is that it isn't good for every individual in the system. In some countries, manufacturing jobs move to places where labor costs are lower. And some countries that receive the influx of jobs aren't prepared to deal with it, from a regulatory standpoint. Anyway, Jacob and Adriene can explain the whole thing to you in 10 minutes. *** Crash Course is on Patreon! Office of Fair Trading
The Office of Fair Trading was a not-for-profit and non-ministerial government department of the United Kingdom, established by the Fair Trading Act 1973, which enforced both consumer protection and competition law, acting as the UK's economic regulator. The OFT's goal was to make markets work well for consumers, ensuring vigorous competition between fair-dealing businesses and prohibiting unfair practices such as rogue trading, scams and cartels. Its role was modified and its powers changed with the Enterprise Act 2002. The Department for Business Innovation and Skills announced reforms to the UK consumer protection and competition regimes. Under the provisions of the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act 2013, the Competition and Markets Authority was established on 1 April 2014 combining many of the functions of the OFT and the Competition Commission and superseding both. Regulation for the consumer credit industry passed from the OFT to the new Financial Conduct Authority from April 2014. This video is targeted to blind users. Fair Trade Act revision to crack down on unfair business practices
당정, 공정위 전속고발제 폐지…형사 제재 강화 The ruling party and the government are working to revamp the country's decades old Fair Trade Act. They're looking at tougher rules for conglomerates,... but they also plan to draw up measures to facilitate investment. Kim Min-ji reports. South Korea is seeking to amend its Fair Trade Act to better reflect socio-economic changes and help foster a fairer economy. At a policy coordination meeting on Tuesday,... the ruling Democratic Party of Korea and the Fair Trade Commission,... said that the proposed all-out revision, the first in 38 years,... is aimed at rooting out unfair business practices and creating a virtuous cycle in which big and small companies can prosper together. "We need to stop conglomerates from trying to get around the law... and keep working to foster a transparent and sound management culture. We will strengthen regulations on irregularities at big businesses. By stopping these illicit activities, we can lay the groundwork for SMEs and small business owners to reap the benefits of their hard work." The revision entails... tougher criminal sanctions for those engaged in price-fixing or bidding collusion... and bigger fines for other illicit activities -- with the maximum rate to be doubled. On top of that, the Fair Trade Commission will also give up its exclusive right to file complaints with the prosecution about major antitrust cases,... in order to make law enforcement more effective and to better protect consumers' rights. In addition,... there will be tighter rules against inside deals among affiliates of big conglomerates. Intra-company transactions will be banned among business groups where the owner family has a stake of more than 20 percent for listed companies,... down from the current threshold of 30 percent. "These measures are in line with 21st century standards... and will help the Fair Trade Commission to win back the people's trust. We have looked at a range of irregularities, and this revision is a clear sign to the market and conglomerates that we are pursuing economic democratization." But its not all sticks. There are carrots, too. In order to reduce the burden on corporations, the government is planning to give them some time before the new measures are implemented,... and are mulling the scope of their application. Also, to foster an innovative ecosystem,... regulations will be eased to encourage large companies to invest in and pursue M&As with venture firms. "The two sides said the revision will systematically address the economic issues of low growth and polarization to achieve a fairer economy -- which will in turn serve as a basis for innovative growth. The government will unveil the amendment in full later this week. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News." SOUNDBITE: (French) Nicolas Messio, Manager 'Alter Mundi' "Today we attract the clients firstly by the product itself. It is one of the stakes, one of the bets of the fair trade business. The idea of attracting people not only because the products are made in dignified working conditions and respectful of environment, this kind of approach succeeds only if the product is interesting. People buy the product to take some pleasure, fair trade is a bonus but it is not the main target" 6. Various store interiors 7. SOUNDBITE: (French) Aurelyen Conty, co founder, designer and general manager of Misericordia " Misericordia is a young project, We still try to convince ourselves that our Utopia is a true reality, that our work can last for a longer period and that it can change the way of producing clothes. What is sure is that today Misericordia clothes are produced in a very different way, humanly and creatively they are unique in Peru and unique in the world." 9. SOUNDBITE: (French) Aurelyen Conty, co founder, designer and general manager of Misericordia "Misericordia is a Peruvian company, paying local taxes, where the designers and all of the workers have annual paid leave, health insurance and pension contributions and that is already an important task to convince people that paying taxes is not that bad, that contributing to a construction of a country is not that bad and that enjoying a social security system is also not that bad" 11. Their care for cut, stitching and graphics was important for us at that time" 16. Various of the first floor of Colette store LEAD IN : Today's consumers seem to be becoming increasingly concerned with seeking out ethical products, whether organic, fair trade or energy saving. From the catwalk to the clothes' rail, ethical clothing is more widely available than ever before and consumers want to know what is in the products they are buying and where they come from. STORYLINE : One of Paris' most exclusive fashion houses Dior unveiled its latest collection at the Paris Fashion show this week to an audience of celebrities and fashion journalists. But on the streets of Paris few people can afford or want to wear expensive couture designs. In recent years, the number of shops selling fair trade fashion has increased in France. 'Fair trade' is a way shoppers can buy products that have been sourced in developing countries with the knowledge that the farmers that produced the goods have been given a fair price for them. Farmers are then able to invest some of their earnings back into their communities, thus alleviating poverty. One Parisian store called 'Alter Mundi' has become specialised in selling 'fair trade' or ethical clothing. Nicolas Messio is the store manager of 'Alter Mundi'. Messio says that people will only want to buy ethical clothing if they like the design and quality of the clothes. Handmade Expressions: Fighting Poverty Through Fair Trade
Google Tech Talk January 19, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Manish Gupta. Our everyday purchasing choices make an impact on the lives of producers around the globe. Do you know where your coffee came from this morning? Was the producer paid a fair wage? Do you know how your dollar can make a difference? Fair Trade is a business model built around social responsibility and environmental sustainability, providing development opportunities to marginalized artisans and farmers. Come to the presentation to learn facts about Fair Trade, and ways you can get involved. Speaker Info: Manish Gupta After graduating from Indian Institute of Technology (Mumbai) and University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Manish Gupta was working in a big technology corporation as a successful operations manager in Austin, Texas. On a trip back to his native state, Rajasthan, in India, he saw how skilled artisan communities are living in abject poverty as they lack access to markets for the goods they produce. He was moved by their plight and decided to do something about it - leaving his cushy job in corporate America, he founded Handmade Expressions, a fair trade company (http://www.handmadeexpressions.net/) with the hope that through that company he would be able to give sustainable work to the people who need it most. The company has expanded from a one man army, to eight employees, and is going strong in the fifth year of its existence. Manish also serves on the Board of directors of the Fair Trade Federation of North America.
