Powerful tools for mathematics instruction can make a good lesson great. Math Tools in Action, an exciting new video series, explores Anchor Charts, Journals, and Manipulatives, three of the most effective tools for helping teachers implement the Common Core Standards while encouraging students to become critical mathematical thinkers. For more than twenty years, Chris Confer and Marco Ramirez have worked with administrators and teachers at dozens of schools around the county to cultivate an environment that elevates math instruction schoolwide. Now you can watch as they teach and comment on a complete lesson using these essential math tools—tools that will help you deepen and improve your own math instruction, no matter what grade level you teach. Simple and accessible, Journals bring the mathematical practices to life in the classroom on a daily basis. Math journals invite students to relate their own ideas, experiences, and prior knowledge to the learning at hand while encouraging them to clarify their thoughts and to use challenging and precise math vocabulary. Watch Chris and fourth-grade students investigate a mathematical argument as they defend, revise and reject conjectures using math journals.

Hear how teachers are looking to obtain resources for teaching after the move from modular to linear assessment. Two teachers offer their thoughts on how existing resources will remain of use while drawing attention to the availability of high quality new resources from exam boards and online. The exam system in England is changing dramatically, with a move from modular to linear assessment that is being driven by the government. Some teachers are concerned about resources. Luke Graham, a teacher of maths and science, thinks there is very little change to subject content and so his existing activities will continue to be valid. He also makes use of a number of teacher-facing resources including the Teacher Toolkit, Teach-it and iTunes U – all of which he thinks do a great job and save him loads of time. He also finds the exam boards a useful source of specimen questions that he uses to assess students. As a teacher of A-level communications and culture, Kay Taylor found a colleague at awarding body AQA was able to help with the change of emphasis on a question. She ‘phoned AQA on Friday and had four attachments of resources by Monday morning. Both Kay and Luke think the move from modular to linear assessment is creating more time so creating an ideal opportunity to broaden their resources and include the world outside the school gates. He wants to tap into business, commerce and industry, getting people in to talk about the relevance and importance of what the students are working on at school. She thinks school trips that feed into a subject area are an opportunity. Download Stickman here: http://www.cutoutpro.com/download.html In this video we take a look at "game prototyping" or the use of interactivity in Elemento. The functions used in these cases are not active in Stickman, but you can try them out in Elemento to see how a specific algorithm will work. Because Elemento uses expressions you don't have to think of the order which the commands are executed, and you can test by clicking Debug instead of recompiling code or refreshing a web site.

So I recorded this song on a whim after being stumped while lesson planning to the sweet sounds of the Menahan Street Band. Their song, Make the Road by Walking, is what inspired this track. If it sounds familiar it's because Jay-Z sampled it for the Roc Boys song. This one is for all the teachers out there who have a lesson plan deadline to meet. I hope you enjoy! I know that my videos may be flawed in some way! I know I rush sometimes and make errors. I know that I'm missing arrows and pointers. I know that you can't see my hand! For egregious errors please tell me and I'll try to get to the corrections. If you can do better, please, do so! Publish! If you agree with Lockhardt http://www.maa.org/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdf then you will find ways to make math more art like and, almost automatically, more agreeable. Unfortunately, with classes of 35:1 or 40:1 teaching is more about crowd control than teaching. And further, I've yet to find any evidence of Lockhardt putting his criticism to work in anything other than idealized situations. If you're studying for a big exam in math or science, nothing brings your study partners into the mix like publishing. Make new smart friends. ;) If you or anyone you knows how to 'do something' especially in math or science... publish that knowledge electronically. Point a web cam at a piece of paper while they solve an abstract problem or use a Livescribe Pulse pen, they're pretty good too. Just get their knowledge published! Some may argue that publishing what you know diminishes the value of your knowledge. I would argue that the more people know the more valuable your insights into those problems! What a great way to get white collar criminals (usually college graduates) helping pay their dues to society... require them to publish their knowledge as a community service to benefit all. The criminal's misdeed cost X to the community. Then have that criminal publish X number of hours of education at the current community college rate. (Backwards looking teachers will say something about losing jobs... those are the same teachers that once locked up books in libraries.)The community then evaluates the value of that person's contributions electronically and decides if the debt has been paid or not. The world needs more math and science like never before. Frankly speaking, hard problems require better problem solvers. Sample list of problems: Rational discourse with fellow human beings: logic and math How to make more efficient transportation: engineering Better tasting more nutritious less resource intensive food: biology Efficient storage and transmission of energy: engineering End of life threatening disease: biology and chemistry Bio-fuels: sciences across the board Cure for cancer: chemistry and biology Toxic waste in soil, air and water: all sciences (Feel free to add to the list in comments below.) The point being, there are not enough educated people to solve our numerous and thorny problems. Too many people sit on their hands and complain that something needs to be done. Here is my solution: you, the intelligent viewer, share your science based intelligence with us. Please spare the world of more hyperbole and useless name calling of opponents to your ideas. If you know of anyone who knows more about math, chemistry, bio-chemistry, physics, engineering, or any of the sciences then try to get them on video showing how they solve problems. Call it their community service without the hassle of going to a classroom... if they are unwilling, then guilt them into by it by pointing out how miserable the world is today and all the bigger problems that need better problem solvers. Make the simple connection of 'better education equals better jobs means better life'. We can make a better world through more and better and free education for all. The state of the quality of public education (and the world!) is now in _your_ hands.
