POLITICAL THEORY - Karl Marx

09:28
Karl Marx remains deeply important today not as the man who told us what to replace capitalism with, but as someone who brilliantly pointed out certain of its problems. The School of Life, a pro-Capitalist institution, takes a look. For gifts and more from The School of Life, visit our online shop: https://goo.gl/O1tWri Download our App: https://goo.gl/kj9Vvr FURTHER READING “Most people agree that we need to improve our economic system somehow. It threatens our planet through excessive consumption, distracts us with irrelevant advertising, leaves people hungry and without healthcare, and fuels unnecessary wars. Yet we’re also often keen to dismiss the ideas of its most famous and ambitious critic, Karl Marx. This isn’t very surprising. In practice, his political and economic ideas have been used to design disastrously planned economies and nasty dictatorships. Frankly, the remedies Marx proposed for the ills of the world now sound a bit demented. He thought we should abolish private property. People should not be allowed to own things. At certain moments one can sympathise. But it’s like wanting to ban gossip or forbid watching television. It’s going to war with human behaviour. And Marx believed the world would be put to rights by a dictatorship of the proletariat; which does not mean anything much today. Openly Marxist parties received a total of only 1,685 votes in the 2010 UK general election, out of the nearly 40 million ballots cast…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/Rt3zri MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/93tGtZ Watch more films on POLITICAL THEORY in our playlist: http://bit.ly/2dma0Sn Do you speak a different language to English? How Language Is Used to Deceive You: Politics, Business, World Events, Sports, and Law (1989)

59:17
Doublespeak is language that deliberately disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060161345/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0060161345&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=7bcf9e30b5c34c13270780661a671f65 Doublespeak may take the form of euphemisms (e.g., "downsizing" for layoffs, "servicing the target" for bombing), in which case it is primarily meant to make the truth sound more palatable. It may also refer to intentional ambiguity in language or to actual inversions of meaning (for example, naming a state of war "peace"). In such cases, doublespeak disguises the nature of the truth. Doublespeak is most closely associated with political language. Doublespeak might also have some connections with contemporary theories as well. Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky note in their book that Orwellian Doublespeak is an important component of the manipulation of the English language in American media, through a process called 'dichotomization'; a component of media propaganda involving 'deeply embedded double standards in the reporting of news'. For example, the use of state funds by the poor and financially needy is commonly referred to as 'social welfare' or 'handouts', which the 'coddled' poor 'take advantage of'. These terms, however, do not apply to other beneficiaries of government spending such as tax incentives and military spending. William D. Lutz, serves as the third chairman of the Doublespeak Committee since 1975 to the present. In 1989, both his own book Doublespeak and, under his editorship, the committee's third book, Beyond Nineteen Eighty-Four, were published. Lutz was also the former editor of the now defunct Quarterly Review of Doublespeak, which examines ways that jargon has polluted the public vocabulary with phrases, words and usages of words designed to obscure the meaning of plain English. His book, Beyond Nineteen Eighty-Four, consists of 220 pages and eighteen articles contributed by long-time Committee members and others whose body of work has made important contributions to understandings about language, as well as a bibliography of 103 sources on doublespeak. Lutz is one of the main contributors to the committee as well as promoting the term "doublespeak" to a mass audience so as to inform them of the deceptive qualities that doublespeak contains. He mentions: There is more to being an effective consumer of language than just expressing dismay at dangling modifiers, faulty subject and verb agreement, or questionable usage. All who use language should be concerned whether statements and facts agree, whether language is, in Orwell's words 'largely the defense of the indefensible' and whether language 'is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.'" [15] He also mentions that the NCTE Committee on Public Doublespeak and their works with regards to educating the public on doublespeak is responsible for "the rather awesome task of combating the advertisers, the politicians, and the major manipulators of public language in our society." [15] Lutz states that it is important to highlight doublespeak to the public because "language isn't the invention of human beings to lie, deceive, mislead, and manipulate" and the "purpose of language is to communicate the truth and to facilitate social groups getting together". Thus, according to Lutz, doublespeak is a form of language that defeats the purpose of inventing language because doublespeak does not communicate the truth but seeks to do the opposite and the doublespeak committee is tasked with correcting this problem that doublespeak has created in the world of language. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doublespeak

Mindmap of Critical Discourse Analysis

00:28
Every textual and/or visual media analysis requires an understanding of the context. This mindmap can be very helpful in this regard, such as: "Jonathan Hardy assesses different ways of making sense of media convergence and digitalisation, media power and influence, and transformations across communication markets." https://www.routledge.com/Critical-Political-Economy-of-the-Media-An-Introduction/Hardy/p/book/9780415544849 Another example: A Critical Discourse Analysis of an article on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict With increasing global media synergies, media studies seems to be gaining popularity in academia. One part of this discipline involves the close examination of media texts, be they written, spoken, or symbolic. To analyse texts linguistically, two dimensions are often considered: that of coherence, involving semantics or the construction of meaning, and that of cohesion, or syntax. This analysis can be done through various types of frameworks, including grounded theory, narrative semiotics, conversation analysis, and critical discourse analysis (CDA). According to Barthes (1994), texts are always multi-dimensional and their meanings are uncovered differently depending on the reader, context and setting. Particularly in the media, they are interconnected to other texts, through means such as quotations, indirect or direct references, photos or historical facts; thus, it could be said that the media produce and reproduce not only texts, but from these, social meaning, which is then further reinforced through subsequent intertextuality (Ibid). Baudrillard (2000) adds that language itself is not necessarily powerful; what makes it more so is its use by powerful people—in today’s society, this being epitomised by the globalised media. Critical discourse analysis is also sometimes referred to as critical linguistics (Wodak and Busch, 2004). Its roots lie in classical rhetoric, sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, and it is often used to illustrate the relationships that power, hierarchy, race and gender have with language (Fairclough, 1995). CDA is especially used today by academics that regard the discursive unit of a text to be one of the most basic units of communication. In fact, it is so widely used within scholarly environments that its legitimacy as a tool for examining power imbalances has been called into question by some, such as Billing (Wodak and Busch, 2004). He claims that because CDA has become so entrenched in academic discourses, it is thus subject to the same rituals and jargon as institutionalized knowledge, thus negating its potential to demystify the functions and intentions of CDA research. While these points are interesting and worthy of further exploration, the scope of this paper will not allow such examination, and furthermore, the assumptions of this paper are that CDA does, in fact, provide useful tools for critical analysis of media texts. Thus, this paper will apply CDA to one article by Rory McCarthy in the Guardian newspaper, dated Wednesday, December 12th, 2007. CDA will be employed to illustrate overt and underlying assumptions and beliefs, as well as the construction of social meaning. Wodak and Busch (2004) claim that all texts can help reproduce and produce unequal relationships in power between men and women, racial groups, social classes, ethnicities, and nations. This can be done through the creation of the Other, which involves the textual representation of a group as being ‘perpetrators and agents’ operating outside the law (Ibid, p. 99). They further claim that after the terrorist attacks of September 11, anti-Islamic prejudices became more pronounced in the media, which characterizes Muslims in anonymous and criminal terms (Ibid). Additionally, ‘strategies of generalization, blaming the victim, and victim-perpetrator reversal are increasingly prominent’ (Ibid, p.100). Analysing the text in the Guardian, these strategies do indeed seem to be in place. For example, actions attributed to Palestinians in the article often involved negative activities, whereas verbs related to the Israelis were more neutral: Palestinian actions: firing rockets, accused, complained, fired back, were detained, were reported, appeared to be Israeli actions: mounted an incursion, said, issue tenders for It is only when the voice of the article shifts from the writer to a direct quote from a Palestinian official that any harsher activities are attributed to the Israelis: sabotage, place obstacles The first sentence of the article is also interesting: Israeli troops in tanks and armoured vehicles mounted an incursion into Gaza yesterday, killing at least six Palestinians….As many as 30 tanks and vehicles were involved in the operation…… Although the facts in the article imply that the Israeli army killed several Palestinians, it is important to note the syntax of the sentence removes direct responsibility from the army and pins it on ‘the incursion’. What is more,

Hobbes and the Person of the State | Professor Quentin Skinner

52:30
Nowadays when we speak about the state we generally use the word simply to refer to an apparatus of government; in common parlance, ‘state’ and ‘government’ have become virtually synonymous terms. My first lecture traces the emergence in early-modern political theory of the strongly contrasting view that the state is the name of a distinct person. Hobbes is seen as the major contributor to this way of thinking about public power. The central section of the lecture analyses his claim that the state is a ‘person by fiction’, as well as examining Pufendorf’s rival but closely associated view that the state ought to be conceived as a moral person. My lecture ends by attempting an assessment of the idea of state personality. Has anything of significance been lost as a result of our abandonment of the belief, central to so much early-modern and Enlightenment discourse, that the state is the name of a person distinct from both government and the governed? Professor Quentin Skinner, Barber Beaumont Professor of the Humanities, Queen Mary University of London, gave the 2015 Agnes Cuming Lectures in the UCD School of Philosophy, University College Dublin, Ireland. Skinner is the author of numerous books and articles on early modern political thought and is a founder of the ‘Cambridge School’ of the history of political thought. He has broad interests in modern intellectual history and has published on a number of philosophical themes including the nature of interpretation and historical explanation, and on several issues in contemporary political theory including the concept of political liberty and the character of the State. About the Agnes Cuming Lectures in Philosophy The UCD School of Philosophy, University College Dublin, has an annual/biannual public lecture series by prominent philosophers made possible by a bequest of Agnes Cuming, one of the first female philosophy graduates of University College Dublin. Ms Agnes Cuming, daughter of a King’s Counsel, was born on 29 September 1890. She graduated from University College Dublin in the autumn of 1910. There were two women in the 1909-1910 Degree class of 24. Her professors would have included Professor Magennis, Professor of Metaphysics; Fr. John Shine, Professor of Logic and Psychology, and Dr M. Cronin, Professor of Ethics and Politics, who were all appointed in 1909. She achieved First Class Honours in her BA Examination and shared first place in the class with Robert L. McKernan. Ms Cuming was awarded the MA in 1911 and the Travelling Studentship in Philosophy in 1912, at the time beating Robert McKernan to the Scholarship. He was awarded a prize of £100. She was the first, and for many years the only woman to have reached Master’s and Travelling Studentship standard in UCD in Philosophy. She attended St Anne’s College, Oxford, and was awarded the BSc after World War I, in 1920. She went on to become the Librarian of University College Hull. Ms Cuming willed one-third of the residue of her estate to be divided equally between St Anne’s College, Oxford and University College Dublin. The interest from this share funds the Agnes Cuming Public Lectures in Philosophy. In recognition of Ms Cuming’s commitment to Philosophy and to University College Dublin, the Philosophy Seminar Room has been renamed the Agnes Cuming Seminar Room. How Comedy Saved Free Speech

13:34
There are a lot of claims of censorship wafting around public discourse, and article after article of think pieces claiming that the right to speak your mind has become embattled. To give this context, let’s talk about a different case of free speech and censorship. A situation where someone faced criminal charges for being offensive in America. This is the story of Lenny Bruce, the stand-up comic that went to bat to fight censorship. Maybe through his story, we can see how to save Freedom of Speech. bell hooks + Jill Soloway - Ending Domination: The Personal is Political I The New School

01:32:38
The early feminist movement was dedicated to the proposition that the personal is political—an insight that has come to be increasingly mocked and ridiculed. In their careers, renowned scholar, poet, and author bell hooks and Emmy-winning television writer and creator of Transparent Jill Soloway have countered this trend, making strong use of the autobiographical to generate critical discourse and awareness of injustice. In this conversation, hooks and Soloway discuss their excavations of the personal and its politics, and how this search strengthens liberation efforts rather than diminish them. About the speakers: For more than three decades, bell hooks (née Gloria Watkins) has been recognized internationally as a scholar, poet, author, and radical thinker. The dozens of books and articles she has published span several genres, including cultural and political analyses and critiques, personal memoirs, poetry collections, and children's books. Her writings cover topics of gender, race, class, spirituality, teaching, and the significance of media in contemporary culture. Jill Soloway is an American comedian, playwright, feminist, Emmy-winning television writer, and award-winning director known for creating, writing, executive producing, and directing the Amazon original series Transparent. PHILOSOPHY - Michel Foucault

08:17
Michel Foucault was a philosophical historian who questioned many of our assumptions about how much better the world is today compared with the past. When he looked at the treatment of the mad, at the medical profession and at sexuality, he didn't see the progress that's routinely assumed. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/9aEZsh FURTHER READING “Michel Foucault (1926-1984) was a French 20th-century philosopher and historian who spent his career forensically critiquing the power of the modern bourgeois capitalist state, including its police, law courts, prisons, doctors and psychiatrists. His goal was to work out nothing less than how power worked and then to change it in the direction of a Marxist-anarchist utopia. Though he spent most of his life in libraries and seminar rooms, he was a committedly revolutionary figure, who met with enormous popularity in elite Parisian intellectual circles (Jean Paul Sartre admired him deeply) and still maintains a wide following among young people studying at university in the prosperous corners of the world…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org: https://goo.gl/jtltOU MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/K8d984 More films on PHILOSOPHY in our playlist below: http://bit.ly/TSOLphilosophy Do you speak a different language to English? How contemporary art responds to politics | Marissa Vigneault | TEDxUSU

10:00
Movement is a term used in art history to classify various styles of art created by a group of artists during a particular period of time. Yet such classification suggests a lack of movement, as each artist is confined within the parameters of a certain style. Movement, however, shapes art and culture; it is a prerequisite of its development. Artists moving from one culture and geographical region to another continuously affect change in the art world. But when physical movement is suppressed, as we see with the current “travel ban” in the United States, shared visual culture is stifled, as thousands of artists are confined within the brackets of categorization. In protest of the “travel ban,” several museums across the United States used modern art to respond by mounting exhibitions highlighting work by artists from the banned nations. This was to showcase the importance of cross-cultural understanding, and proclaim that we must see art as political and recognize the political stakes of art. Marissa Vigneault was born and raised in the Northeast, not far from New York City, which allowed for ample exposure to art museums and galleries at an early age. After trying to be a painter, but never quite succeeding, she turned her attention to writing about art, at which she is way more adept. Marissa teaches classes in modern and contemporary art at Utah State University, where she works with the Honors’ Program, serves on the advisory board of the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, and loves to engage in a good studio critique with undergraduate and graduate students. She is secretly happy that her colleagues in Art + Design do not ask her to critique their work, as that could get messy. Marissa is the author of numerous articles and catalogue entries, and is currently working on a book about Hannah Wilke and Marcel Duchamp. She has presented her research on performance art and feminism at national and international conferences. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Irving Wolfe: Introduction to Velikovsky’s Ideas | EU2017

01:02:57
Dr. Irving Wolfe will review Immanuel Velikovsky’s contributions to a broad-ranging discourse in the sciences. Why did Velikovsky’s best-selling Worlds in Collision provoke one of most heated scientific controversies of the 20th century? Why did the gatekeepers of “acceptable” theory feel compelled to mobilize a boycott of the original publisher? And is it possible that Velikovsky’s own perspective on cultural amnesia can help us understand the reactions to his work? Modeling his analysis on a judicial approach, Dr. Wolfe will correct the record for the benefit of new generations in the sciences. Dr. Irving Wolfe earned a PhD in Drama from the University of Bristol, England. He is a member of the faculty, Department of English, University of Montréal, Canada. In addition to his literary research, Professor Wolfe has presented several dozen papers on catastrophism at conferences in England, Canada, and the United States, and has published papers in the field in British, Canadian and American journals. He has also contributed large sections on catastrophism to a number of anthologies. Professor Wolfe is concerned with the long-lasting effects of collective unconscious catastrophic memory on later collective and individual human behavior and intellectual products, so his articles, conference papers, and book sections have focused on catastrophism and Shakespeare, creative art, religion, cosmology, ancient chronology, political activism, epistemology, sport, soap opera, ancient governments and public rituals, ancient cities, ancient writing and literacy, scientific repression and popular culture. He is currently completing a book on catastrophism and unconscious collective memory in Shakespeare. Interview with the grievance studies hoaxers

In the second week of January (2019) I spoke with Dr. Peter Boghossian, Dr. James Lindsay, and Helen Pluckrose, authors of the infamous “Grievance studies” hoax papers. We discussed their motivations and the consequences of their actions. Portland State University is currently taking disciplinary actions against Dr. Boghossian, having found him guilty of academic misconduct for failing to have PSU’s Institutional Review Board approve his "studies" before they were conducted (!) For the past forty years Noam Chomsky's writings on politics and language have established him as a preeminent public intellectual and as one of the most original and wide-ranging political and social critics of our time. Among the seminal figures in linguistic theory over the past century, since the 1960s Chomsky has also secured a place as perhaps the leading dissident voice in the United States. In this talk from Google Cambridge in May of 2017 Professor Chomsky discusses wide ranging topics from the development of his personal political views to the control of information and media with Googler Hasan Khalil.

Paddy McQueen gives an introductory talk to Butler's work on feminism, gender, identity and power at Queen's University Belfast. Judith Butler is perhaps one of the most well-known post-structuralist feminist philosophers in the Western world. She is associated with continental feminism, work in queer theory, gender identity, power and ethics, as well as being known for her political activism. Paddy McQueen is (at time of writing) a PhD candidate at Queen's University Belfast in Political Theory and the author of several articles on identity and recognition. For more on his work, check out: -http://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/SchoolofPoliticsInternationalStudiesandPhilosophy/Research/ResearchStudents/McQueen/ -http://paddymcqueen.co.uk/ The talk starts with a short introduction to feminism before turning most of its attention toward Judith Butler's work. PHILOSOPHY: Immanuel Kant

08:13
Immanuel Kant was acutely aware of living in an age when philosophy would need to supplant the role once played by religion. This helped him to arrive at his most famous concept: the ‘categorical imperative.’ If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/o15jWG FURTHER READING “Immanuel Kant is a philosopher who tried to work out how human beings could be good and kind – outside of the exhortations and blandishments of traditional religion. He was born in 1724 in the Baltic city of Königsberg, which at that time was part of Prussia, and now belongs to Russia (renamed Kaliningrad)...” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org: https://goo.gl/HnPgjd MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/8yBXZv More films on PHILOSOPHY in our playlist below: http://bit.ly/TSOLphilosophy Do you speak a different language to English? human rights vs citizens rites discourse (FYI) 101

28:42
this is an ecclesiastical (religious & political) view of the sovereign Emperor of Ethiopia's international political position as a universal human rights ambassador for humanity. for this is the divine law that comes from Zion (Empire of Ethiopia) and will not give in, until it bears diplomatic results from the common human being. this international political discourse between universal human rights (diplomatic privileges) under the UDHR, which are secured and protected under international law, and involuntary debtor citizen taxpayer corporate serf status in global commerce, under constitutional (mind & body) debt bondage superimposed through jesuit supremacy (imf globalization policies), which is fraud. for in our wonderful modern world of social democracy (political choices) today, without mutual consent conferred from the voice of the governed peoples in political unity,, then there is no international political legitimacy for global jesuit tyranny (legal inequality), under an unlawul jesuit financial system superimposed by thieves (human rights violators). Deuteronomy 30:15-20, revised in Ethiopian spectacles for real ecclesiastical change (choosing humanity a new global economy) Choose a debt free diplomatic humanitarian Life (living in full equality) over eternal civil death (debtor taxpaying citizen status) 15 “See, I an I have set before you today a debt free diplomatic humanitarian life (living in full equality) and international political prosperity, and civil death (debtor taxpayer victim status) and jesuit financial adversaries (human rights violators); 16 in that I an I command you today to love (trust & obey) the sovereign LORD (political master) your Elect of God the Father Majesty of Ethiopia (UN lawgiver of the 20th century, to ecclesiastically walk in His debt free diplomatic ways and to faithfully keep His human rights commandments (30 articles) and His statutes and His judgments (decision making), that you may live and multiply, and that the sovereign LORD (political master) your sovereign and Elect of God the Father Majesty may diplomatically bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it. 17 “But if your heart turns away from the Emperors UDHR law of equality for all and you will not obey 30 articles, but are drawn away and worship other jesuit gods and service their astronomical national debts that can never be repaid, 18 I an I declare to you today that you shall surely perish under global jesuit imperialism under the papacys dirty feet (corrupt jurisdiction), politically. You will not prolong your days as a corporate victim (debtor taxpaying serf) in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess it. 19 “I an I call heaven (EMPIRE OF ETHIOPIA) and earth (193 MEMBER NATION STATES) to diplomatically witness against you today, that I an I have set before you a divine political choice between a debt free diplomatic humanitarian life (living in full equality). and civil death (debtor taxpaying slaves status), the human rights blessing (diplomatic immunity) and the global jesuit supremacy curse (imf globalization policies). So choose a debt free international humanitarian life in order that you may diplomatically live, you and your descendants, 20 by loving the sovereign LORD (political master) your Elect of God the Son to come, by obeying His sovereign voice, and by holding fast to His Imperial Majesty's UDHR principles of fundamental equality for all; for this is your debt free diplomatic humanitarian life and the length of your days, that you may diplomatically live in the land which the sovereign LORD swore to your fathers, (Ethiopian bishops) to Abraham (family head - Emperor of Ethiopia), Father Isaac (Abuna Yesehaq), and modern day Jacob (21st century younger generation, to give them.” rest assured, that just as sure as there is a global financial crisis violating humanity, there is a universal redeemer (Lion of Judah world banker) here on earth (193 member nation states), seeking a diplomatic way to expose this insanity. for the seeds of global financial slavery have created international political mustard seeds (human rights defenders), who are the diplomatic countermeasure to global financial calamity, and unquenchable jesuit greed.
Authoritarianism 1 of 11 | The Art of Political Persuasion by Robin Koerner

Robin discusses his article “Authoritarians to the Right of Me, Authoritarians to the Left”. The article can be found here https://fee.org/articles/authoritarians-to-the-right-of-me-authoritarians-to-the-left/ Robin Koerner, The Art of Political Persuasion http://robinkoerner.com About the Art of Political Persuasion The Art of Political Persuasion is a unique way for candidates, activists, or anyone engaged in political discourse to attract support for their candidacy, cause of position……and do so without having to make better arguments. In contrast, “The Art of Political Persuasion” takes a revolutionary approach towards political discourse by helping people with opposing points of view understand and negate the underlying forces that keep them from coming and working together on common ground to solve a mutually agreed upon common problem. If you are a candidate, activist or anyone interested political discourse and believe that it’s way past time we all started to act like adults, rather than argumentative children, then subscribe to the channel. This is cutting edge information you won’t find anywhere else………and if you are an activist of any sort, I offer a free report on my website at http://www.robinkoerner.com called “the 10 reasons your arguments fail to win support and what you can do about it right now”. Stanley Rosen - Images of China in Recent American Films

21:53
Through Tinted Lenses? How Chinese and Americans See Each Other What do Americans and Chinese "know" about each other and how do they know it? What images do they have of each other's society and state? Where do these images come from? Why do some endure and others change? How do images vary with age and other factors? How do these perceptions affect the decisions and actions of governments, businesses, civic groups, and individuals? On November 1-2, 2013, leading academics will gather with pollsters, journalists, diplomats, and entertainment industry practitioners to explore these questions and questions and others at a conference hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute. Polls suggest that a slight majority of Americans believe that the values of Chinese and Americans are so different that cooperation to address international problems is impossible. Most Chinese feel the U.S. is working to constrain China's continued rise. Americans and Chinese have increasingly negative impressions of each other's countries. Yet, we are visiting each other's countries more than ever before, becoming ever more intertwined, and are working cooperatively in many different ways to address pressing social, economic, and environmental issues. At the conference we'll examine how these exchanges affect perceptions along with the even more powerful role played by new and old media, popular entertainment, and political discourse. About the Speaker Stanley Rosen has taught political science at USC since 1979. He's headed the East Asian Studies Center and is a member of the US-China Institute's executive committee. His courses range from Chinese politics and Chinese film to socio-political change in East Asian societies. He's published numerous books and articles, including Chinese Politics: State, Society and the Market (co-edited with Peter Hays Gries) and Art, Politics and Commerce in Chinese Cinema (co-edited with Ying Zhu). Other works look the Cultural Revolution, the Chinese legal system, public opinion, youth, gender, and human rights. He is co-editor of Chinese Education and Society.

A Game by Any Other Name: Assessing the Conflict in Discourse

14:01
Video games have advanced in leaps and bounds since their humble beginnings and are now an art form. Isn't there a value in understanding what IS a game, when some designers are more interested in making art than designing a game?
