POLITICAL THEORY - Karl Marx

09:28
Karl Marx remains deeply important today not as the man who told us what to replace capitalism with, but as someone who brilliantly pointed out certain of its problems. The School of Life, a pro-Capitalist institution, takes a look. For gifts and more from The School of Life, visit our online shop: https://goo.gl/O1tWri Download our App: https://goo.gl/kj9Vvr FURTHER READING “Most people agree that we need to improve our economic system somehow. It threatens our planet through excessive consumption, distracts us with irrelevant advertising, leaves people hungry and without healthcare, and fuels unnecessary wars. Yet we’re also often keen to dismiss the ideas of its most famous and ambitious critic, Karl Marx. This isn’t very surprising. In practice, his political and economic ideas have been used to design disastrously planned economies and nasty dictatorships. Frankly, the remedies Marx proposed for the ills of the world now sound a bit demented. He thought we should abolish private property. People should not be allowed to own things. At certain moments one can sympathise. But it’s like wanting to ban gossip or forbid watching television. It’s going to war with human behaviour. And Marx believed the world would be put to rights by a dictatorship of the proletariat; which does not mean anything much today. Openly Marxist parties received a total of only 1,685 votes in the 2010 UK general election, out of the nearly 40 million ballots cast…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/Rt3zri MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/93tGtZ Watch more films on POLITICAL THEORY in our playlist: http://bit.ly/2dma0Sn Do you speak a different language to English? How Language Is Used to Deceive You: Politics, Business, World Events, Sports, and Law (1989)

59:17
Doublespeak is language that deliberately disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060161345/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0060161345&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=7bcf9e30b5c34c13270780661a671f65 Doublespeak may take the form of euphemisms (e.g., "downsizing" for layoffs, "servicing the target" for bombing), in which case it is primarily meant to make the truth sound more palatable. It may also refer to intentional ambiguity in language or to actual inversions of meaning (for example, naming a state of war "peace"). In such cases, doublespeak disguises the nature of the truth. Doublespeak is most closely associated with political language. Doublespeak might also have some connections with contemporary theories as well. Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky note in their book that Orwellian Doublespeak is an important component of the manipulation of the English language in American media, through a process called 'dichotomization'; a component of media propaganda involving 'deeply embedded double standards in the reporting of news'. For example, the use of state funds by the poor and financially needy is commonly referred to as 'social welfare' or 'handouts', which the 'coddled' poor 'take advantage of'. These terms, however, do not apply to other beneficiaries of government spending such as tax incentives and military spending. William D. Lutz, serves as the third chairman of the Doublespeak Committee since 1975 to the present. In 1989, both his own book Doublespeak and, under his editorship, the committee's third book, Beyond Nineteen Eighty-Four, were published. Lutz was also the former editor of the now defunct Quarterly Review of Doublespeak, which examines ways that jargon has polluted the public vocabulary with phrases, words and usages of words designed to obscure the meaning of plain English. His book, Beyond Nineteen Eighty-Four, consists of 220 pages and eighteen articles contributed by long-time Committee members and others whose body of work has made important contributions to understandings about language, as well as a bibliography of 103 sources on doublespeak. Lutz is one of the main contributors to the committee as well as promoting the term "doublespeak" to a mass audience so as to inform them of the deceptive qualities that doublespeak contains. He mentions: There is more to being an effective consumer of language than just expressing dismay at dangling modifiers, faulty subject and verb agreement, or questionable usage. All who use language should be concerned whether statements and facts agree, whether language is, in Orwell's words 'largely the defense of the indefensible' and whether language 'is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.'" [15] He also mentions that the NCTE Committee on Public Doublespeak and their works with regards to educating the public on doublespeak is responsible for "the rather awesome task of combating the advertisers, the politicians, and the major manipulators of public language in our society." [15] Lutz states that it is important to highlight doublespeak to the public because "language isn't the invention of human beings to lie, deceive, mislead, and manipulate" and the "purpose of language is to communicate the truth and to facilitate social groups getting together". Thus, according to Lutz, doublespeak is a form of language that defeats the purpose of inventing language because doublespeak does not communicate the truth but seeks to do the opposite and the doublespeak committee is tasked with correcting this problem that doublespeak has created in the world of language. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doublespeak

Facebook tries and fails to improve civil political discourse

Uninformed, largely ignorant ramblings from a random internet person in rough regards to the video title (which might be a little click baity, if so, sorry) Please feel free to comment and please consider looking at another video of mine, if you felt that you in any way enjoyed this nonsense. And if you did, God bless you. No offense is meant by the video (probably. Well, possibly, depends on the video (this is a generic message)). I do not claim to have a well informed opinion on anything discussed in this video or any other that I may create. So if you are offended my strong recommendation would be simply to ignore and disregard what has caused offense and simply move on with your life. Also, I believe in free speech (mostly) and wish to be fairly free and casually speaking on this channel. I want to feel comfortable expressing myself and not have to self censor myself with what I feel maybe someone else's chosen PC filter. So if that is not to your liking please do not watch my videos. An Invitation to the Intellectual Dark Web

01:25:31
I spoke today with author Gregg Hurwitz (more information about him below). Hurwitz is currently working to rebrand the Democratic party, working to produce an issues-oriented, anti-corruption, practical mainstream narrative and to identify promising Democratic candidates who can hold their own in long form political discussions. This is all in an attempt to end the dangerous polarization and concentration on ever more extreme ideology that seems to be destabilizing political discussion. The video is in large part an invitation to the long-form discussion providers of the so-called Intellectual Dark Web to engage with such candidates, so that the public can see beyond the sound bites and spin and impression management and message crafting that has become an integral but pathological part of our traditional low-bandwidth media communication technology. Let's see if we can find political candidates who can shine in a three hour discussion. We're done with the oversimplifications of the traditional media forms. Background: Gregg Hurwitz is the New York Times, #1 internationally bestselling author of 20 thrillers, including OUT OF THE DARK (2019), and two award-winning thriller novels for teens. His novels have won numerous literary awards, graced top ten lists, and have been published in 30 languages. Gregg has written screenplays for or sold spec scripts to many of the major studios (including THE BOOK OF HENRY), and written, developed, and produced television for various networks. He is also a New York Times Bestselling comic book writer, having penned stories for Marvel (Wolverine, Punisher) and DC (Batman, Penguin). He has published numerous academic articles on Shakespeare, taught fiction writing in the USC English Department, and guest lectured for UCLA, and for Harvard in the United States and internationally. In the course of researching his thrillers, he has sneaked onto demolition ranges with Navy SEALs, swum with sharks in the Galápagos, and gone undercover into mind-control cults. Hurwitz grew up in the Bay Area. While completing a BA from Harvard and a master’s from Trinity College, Oxford in Shakespearean tragedy, he wrote his first novel. He was the undergraduate scholar-athlete of the year at Harvard for his pole-vaulting exploits, and played college soccer in England, where he was a Knox fellow. He has increasingly turned his attention to the political sphere, in an effort to end polarizing discourse: · Rebranding the entire Democratic party · Working with a number of candidates and entities, from senators to the DNC/DCCC/DLCC · Effort to get away from gridlock and into solutions Additional relevant links: Website: http://jordanbpeterson.com/ Books: 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos: https://jordanbpeterson.com/12-rules-for-life/ Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief: https://jordanbpeterson.com/maps-of-meaning/ Blog: https://jordanbpeterson.com/blog/ Podcast: https://jordanbpeterson.com/jordan-b-peterson-podcast/ Reading List: https://jordanbpeterson.com/2017/10/great-books/ 12 Rules for Life Tour: Dates, Cities and Venues: https://jordanbpeterson.com/events/ Self Authoring Suite: http://selfauthoring.com/ Understand Myself personality test: http://understandmyself.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordan.b.peterson/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drjordanpeterson Support this channel: https://www.jordanbpeterson.com/donate

A Game by Any Other Name: Assessing the Conflict in Discourse

14:01
Video games have advanced in leaps and bounds since their humble beginnings and are now an art form. Isn't there a value in understanding what IS a game, when some designers are more interested in making art than designing a game? Let's explore the idea and then look at how the mainstream media has discouraged the discussion of what's "not a game." How Comedy Saved Free Speech

13:34
There are a lot of claims of censorship wafting around public discourse, and article after article of think pieces claiming that the right to speak your mind has become embattled. To give this context, let’s talk about a different case of free speech and censorship. A situation where someone faced criminal charges for being offensive in America. This is the story of Lenny Bruce, the stand-up comic that went to bat to fight censorship. Maybe through his story, we can see how to save Freedom of Speech. Academics expose corruption in Grievance Studies

06:35
The first video revealing the behind-the-scenes story of how a trio of concerned left-wing academics (James Lindsay, Peter Boghossian and Helen Pluckrose) published seven intentionally absurd papers in leading scholarly journals in what has become known as 'The Grievance Studies Affair'. I followed Pete, Jim and Helen for almost a year before the project was revealed with this video and an article in the Wall Street Journal. This series is associated with a feature-length documentary I'm working on. My plan is to play around with some of the footage I gather and upload it here to gauge interest and have a creative outlet while I learn about the complicated subject matter. You can follow the story here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLHyNSlsz449SOhzpo7ClMEKe9WkXt5GO My usual sources of film funding are blocked off to me because of the sensitive subject matter and my slow approach. Hash-Tag Politics: The Social Media Revolution in Putin's Russia

01:02:21
A RUSSIAN STUDIES Symposium held on 04-04-13 at Stetson University. The internet age presents serious challenges to authoritarian governments by democratizing political discourse. Citizens now have the means to speak directly to each other without the filter of the official media. To explore the impact of the new media on Russian public life, the Russian Studies Program at Stetson University will host a symposium, "Hashtag Politics: The Social Media Revolution in Putin's Russia," on Wednesday, April 3rd, at 4pm in the Rinker Auditorium of the Lynn Business Center. The speakers for the event are Professor Michael Gorham of the University of Florida and Professor Sarah Oates of the University of Maryland. Professor Eugene Huskey of Stetson will moderate the symposium. Michael Gorham is an Associate Professor of Russian Studies at the University of Florida and an associate editor of The Russian Review. Originally a specialist in language and politics in early 20th century Russia, he has worked in recent years on the media revolution in contemporary Russia. Among his recent articles is "Medvedev's New Media Gambit: The Language of Power in 140 Characters or Less." He has just completed a book manuscript entitled In Newspeak's Wake: Language, Culture, and Politics from Glasnost to Social Media. Sarah Oates is Professor and Senior Scholar in the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. Before moving to Maryland in 2012, she had taught for many years in the Politics Department at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. A widely published scholar on democratization and communications, she serves as an expert for the European Commission's Digital Futures project. Her latest book, Revolution Stalled: The Political Limits of the Internet in the Post-Soviet Sphere, was recently published by Oxford University Press.

In contrast, “The Art of Political Persuasion” takes a revolutionary approach towards political discourse by helping people with opposing points of view understand and negate the underlying forces that keep them from coming and working together on common ground to solve a mutually agreed upon common problem. If you are a candidate, activist or anyone interested political discourse and believe that it’s way past time we all started to act like adults, rather than argumentative children, then subscribe to the channel. George Lakoff | Talks at Google

01:03:20
The [email protected] program was pleased to welcome author and professor George Lakoff to Google's New York office to discuss his new book, "The Political Mind". George Lakoff is Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science and Linguistics at the University of California at Berkeley and Senior Fellow at the Rockridge Institute, a think tank in Berkeley, CA. He is author of "Don't Think of an Elephant!", "Moral Politics", "Whose Freedom?", and coauthor of "Thinking Points: A Progressive's Handbook", as well as many books and articles on cognitive science and linguistics. In this talk Professor Lakoff speaks about his latest work The Political Mind: Why You Can't Understand 21st-Century American Politics with an 18th-Century Brain. In "What's the Matter with Kansas?", Thomas Frank pointed out that a great number of Americans actually vote against their own interests. In "The Political Mind", George Lakoff explains why.

Discourse Analysis Part 2: Foucauldian Approaches

32:17
From a lecture given in 2015 by Graham R Gibbs at the University of Huddersfield. This second session examines the ideas behind a Foucauldian Discourse Analysis and draws also on some ideas from Critical Discourse Analysis. The distinctive contributions of Michel Foucault's approach are discussed before some of the key ways of carrying out a Foucauldian analysis are examined. The session ends with a brief discussion of some of the criticisms of both Foucauldian and Psychological discourse analysis. PHILOSOPHY - Michel Foucault

08:17
Michel Foucault was a philosophical historian who questioned many of our assumptions about how much better the world is today compared with the past. When he looked at the treatment of the mad, at the medical profession and at sexuality, he didn't see the progress that's routinely assumed. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/9aEZsh FURTHER READING “Michel Foucault (1926-1984) was a French 20th-century philosopher and historian who spent his career forensically critiquing the power of the modern bourgeois capitalist state, including its police, law courts, prisons, doctors and psychiatrists. His goal was to work out nothing less than how power worked and then to change it in the direction of a Marxist-anarchist utopia. Though he spent most of his life in libraries and seminar rooms, he was a committedly revolutionary figure, who met with enormous popularity in elite Parisian intellectual circles (Jean Paul Sartre admired him deeply) and still maintains a wide following among young people studying at university in the prosperous corners of the world…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org: https://goo.gl/jtltOU MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/K8d984 More films on PHILOSOPHY in our playlist below: http://bit.ly/TSOLphilosophy Do you speak a different language to English? bell hooks + Jill Soloway - Ending Domination: The Personal is Political I The New School

01:32:38
The early feminist movement was dedicated to the proposition that the personal is political—an insight that has come to be increasingly mocked and ridiculed. In their careers, renowned scholar, poet, and author bell hooks and Emmy-winning television writer and creator of Transparent Jill Soloway have countered this trend, making strong use of the autobiographical to generate critical discourse and awareness of injustice. In this conversation, hooks and Soloway discuss their excavations of the personal and its politics, and how this search strengthens liberation efforts rather than diminish them. About the speakers: For more than three decades, bell hooks (née Gloria Watkins) has been recognized internationally as a scholar, poet, author, and radical thinker. The dozens of books and articles she has published span several genres, including cultural and political analyses and critiques, personal memoirs, poetry collections, and children's books. Her writings cover topics of gender, race, class, spirituality, teaching, and the significance of media in contemporary culture. Jill Soloway is an American comedian, playwright, feminist, Emmy-winning television writer, and award-winning director known for creating, writing, executive producing, and directing the Amazon original series Transparent. Banal nationalism | Wikipedia audio article

02:51
This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Banal nationalism 00:02:29 undefined Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. You can find other Wikipedia audio articles too at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKfABj2eGyjH3ntPxp4YeQ You can upload your own Wikipedia articles through: https://github.com/nodef/wikipedia-tts "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates SUMMARY ======= Banal nationalism refers to the everyday representations of the nation which build a shared sense of national belonging amongst humans. The term is derived from English academic, Michael Billig's 1995 book of the same name and is intended to be understood critically. The concept has been highly influential, particularly within the discipline of political geography, with continued academic interest since its publication in the 1990s. Today the term is used primarily in academic discussion of identity formation and geopolitics. Examples of banal nationalism include the use of flags in everyday contexts, sporting events, national songs, symbols on money, popular expressions and turns of phrase, patriotic clubs, the use of implied togetherness in the national press, for example, the use of terms such as the prime minister, the weather, our team, and divisions into "domestic" and "international" news. Many of these symbols are most effective because of their constant repetition, and almost subliminal nature. Banal nationalism is often created via state institutions such as schools. Michael Billig's primary purpose in coining the term was to clearly differentiate everyday, endemic nationalism from extremist variants. He argued that the academic and journalistic focus on extreme nationalists, independence movements, and xenophobes in the 1980s and 1990s obscured the modern strength and the most common strain of contemporary nationalism, by implying that it was a fringe ideology. He noted the almost unspoken assumption of the utmost importance of the nation in political discourse of the time, for example in the calls to protect Kuwait during the 1991 Gulf War, or the Falkland Islands in 1982. He argues that the "hidden" nature of modern nationalism makes it a very powerful ideology, partially because it remains largely unexamined and unchallenged, yet remains the basis for powerful political movements, and most political violence in the world today. Banal nationalism should not be thought of as a weak form of nationalism, but the basis for "dangerous nationalisms" However, in earlier times calls to the "nation" were not as important, when religion, monarchy or family might have been invoked more successfully to mobilize action. He also uses the concept to dispute post-modernist claims that the nation-state is in decline, noting particularly the continued hegemonic power of American nationalism.

PHILOSOPHY: Immanuel Kant

08:13
Immanuel Kant was acutely aware of living in an age when philosophy would need to supplant the role once played by religion. This helped him to arrive at his most famous concept: the ‘categorical imperative.’ If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/o15jWG FURTHER READING “Immanuel Kant is a philosopher who tried to work out how human beings could be good and kind – outside of the exhortations and blandishments of traditional religion. He was born in 1724 in the Baltic city of Königsberg, which at that time was part of Prussia, and now belongs to Russia (renamed Kaliningrad)...” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org: https://goo.gl/HnPgjd MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/8yBXZv More films on PHILOSOPHY in our playlist below: http://bit.ly/TSOLphilosophy Do you speak a different language to English? If You Want To Have Liberty, Have Fewer Arguments and Tell More Stories – A Lesson From History

27:33
Robin Koerner, The Art of Political Persuasion http://robinkoerner.com The Advance of Liberty Depends on Stories, Not Just Arguments If you tell the right story to enough people, you don’t have to argue with them. There are deep reasons why logical arguments change few minds, whereas the right kind of human story can change many more. Most society-scale changes in the direction of liberty have been triggered by the harnessing of the imagination and empathy of a large number of people in response to a) the mass-popularization of b) a “concrete” story about c) (usually) an injustice done to d) specific individuals. From 'fart people' to citizens on China's internet | Xiao Qiang | TEDxLiberdade

21:49
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Xiao Qiang delivers a fascinating look at the awakening of Chinese people to their political rights through their struggle against online censorship and control of information. This topic is only becoming more critical as online restrictions are rising throughout the world, while online sharing is becoming an indispensable component to civil society rights. Xiao Qiang is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of China Digital Times, a bilingual China news website launched in 2003 to aggregate, organize, and recommend ONLINE INFORMATION from and about China. He is an adjunct professor at the SCHOOL OF INFORMATION, University of California at Berkeley, as well as the Director of the school’s Counter-Power Lab, an interdisciplinary faculty-student RESEARCH group focusing on the intersection of digital media, counter-censorship technology and cyberactivism. He became a full time HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST after the Tiananmen Massacre in 1989. Xiao has published numerous articles on China, human rights, and Internet politics in the International Herald Tribune, the WASHINGTON Post, the WALL STREET Journal, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, the Los Angeles Times, the South China Morning Post, and other major publications. Xiao was the Executive Director of the New York-based NGO Human Rights in China from 1991 to 2002 and vice-chairman of the steering committee of the World Movement for Democracy. Xiao received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2001 and is profiled in the book Soul Purpose: 40 People Who Are Changing the World for the Better (Melcher Media, 2003). Xiao’s current research focuses on mapping political discourses in Chinese cyberspace, measuring the state censorship and control of the Internet, and developing CLOUD-based technologies which can break through such censorship. Intimate Strangers: Analyzing Foreigners’ Perspectives on American Politics

17:31
Immigrants to new countries bring expectations and experiences and a different set of values and customs with them, which often allows them to see things from fresh viewpoints. In the new book “Intimate Strangers in American Political Discourse,” Carnegie Mellon University’s Andreea Deciu Ritivoi analyzes foreigners’ perspectives on American politics – and the challenges they face by at times being critical. Using four respected intellectual exiles as examples – Hannah Arendt, Herbert Marcuse, Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Edward Said, Ritivoi explores the benefits of their “stranger ethos” in order to improve political systems and societal problems.
