Brexit: Will the UK take part in EU elections? | DW News

05:06
British Prime Minister Theresa May has asked the EU for yet another extension to Brexit, saying the UK needs more time to avoid leaving the EU without a divorce deal. In a letter sent to European Council President Donald Tusk, May asked for the Brexit deadline to be delayed until up to June 30th. She said she still hoped to get Britain out of the EU before European elections in May, but said that London would make preparations to hold the elections if that's not possible. Parliament to vote again on Brexit - BBC News

15:50
The British government has confirmed that parliament will vote on Brexit again on Friday, but only on one part of the deal reached with the European Union. Members of parliament will vote on the withdrawal agreement including the Irish 'backstop', divorce bill and citizens' rights. But it will not amount to a third 'meaningful vote' on the deal, as it will not include a vote on the UK's future relationship with the EU. Meanwhile the British Chambers of Commerce said MPs need to stop “chasing rainbows” when it comes to resolving the Brexit impasse. At their annual conference, they said the Brexit uncertainty is already doing “real world damage” to the UK economy. The 29th March was meant to be the day that Britain left the European Union. The BBC has been talking to voters in Weston-Super-Mare in North Somerset, where like the UK as a whole, they voted 52 to 48 in favour of Leaving. Laura Kuenssberg, Emma Vardy, Simon Jack, John Pienaar and Ed Thomas report for the BBC News at Ten, presented by Sophie Raworth. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog

Theresa May delays UK Brexit vote

10:32
Britain's big Brexit decision was delayed, as Prime Minister Theresa May pulled the plug on the December 11th parliamentary vote on her deal for the country to leave the European Union. May admitted the decision to delay the vote was made after it became clear she would lose it "by a significant margin" and she will now go back to EU leaders to seek further reassurances. The embattled leader told the UK House of Commons that she had listened "very carefully to what has been said in this chamber and out of it" -- a statement that was met by laughter and jeering by members of Parliament. May admitted that "there remains widespread and deep concern" over the Northern Ireland backstop. The backstop is an arrangement designed to ensure there is no return to a "hard border" between Ireland, which will remain part of the European Union after Brexit, and Northern Ireland when the UK leaves the bloc next March. The prime minister said she had hoped changes secured to the backstop, to avoid being trapped in it indefinitely, would be enough for MPs. UK PM Theresa May's Brexit statement- BBC News

13:10
Theresa May says concerns have been expressed about leaving the EU without a deal, with calls for it to be ruled out. She says the best way to rule out a no deal Brexit is to agree a deal with the EU. The only other way is to extend Article 50, something she says the EU is unlikely to agree to without a clear plan of how an agreement can be reached. When people say the government should rule out no deal, she says they are essentially saying "we should revoke Article 50". This doesn't respect the Brexit vote, she says. Others are calling for a second referendum, she says, but "our duty is to implement the first one". She is concerned about the precedent that would set for future refendums. She says she does not know what Jeremy Corbyn believes regarding this, as he has "not engaged". Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog #Brexit #BBCNews

Brexit: May antagonizes UK Parliament with public address | DW News

10:20
Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel has confirmed that the EU could approve Britain's request for a short extension to Brexit. Merkel told German lawmakers that the EU could back a delay if British lawmakers passed the British prime minister's withdrawal deal in a vote next week. This despite the fact that it has already been rejected twice. Chancellor Merkel's comments were part of a policy speech to the German parliament ahead of an EU summit that starts today in Brussels. She began her speech by saying she favored a delay if it meant an orderly Brexit that was able to resolve the issues surrounding the Irish border. Meanwhile British prime minister Theresa May used a national TV address to give her fellow parliamentarians a good telling off. Brexit: UK Lawmakers vote on alternative EU divorce options

05:11:06
British lawmakers were preparing to vote Wednesday on multiple options for leaving the European Union as they sought to bring some clarity to the country's tortured Brexit process. In the wake of two overwhelming defeats for Prime Minister Theresa May's withdrawal agreement with the EU, the House of Commons has taken control of the parliamentary timetable on Wednesday in the hope of finding a way through the impasse. Lawmakers are holding a five-hour debate on a wide range of Brexit alternatives, after which they will be asked to vote for all of the options they could accept. The plan is for the most popular ideas to move to a second vote on Monday to find one option that can command a majority. The debate comes two days after lawmakers took control of the parliamentary agenda away from the government amid alarm that Britain was heading toward a chaotic Brexit within weeks with no exit plan in place. May has said she will consider the outcome of the "indicative votes," though she has refused to be bound by the result. Monumental defeat for Brexit sparks chaos

15:04
Theresa May's Brexit deal has been crushed by a record margin as British lawmakers rejected it by 432 votes to 202. After eight days of parliamentary debate and 200 speeches, members of the House of Commons ignored the Prime Minister's final pleas and delivered a humiliating verdict on her plan to take Britain out of the European Union. The result -- the worst parliamentary defeat for a British government in the modern era -- means the Prime Minister now faces a deep political crisis, with no clear path out of the mess. Speaking moments after May's humiliating defeat, opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn put forward a motion of no confidence in May's government. Corbyn said the challenge would allow the Commons to "give its verdict on the sheer incompetence of this Government."
