Brexit: Thousands demonstrate in London for second referendum | DW News

Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in London to call for a second referendum on Brexit. Organizers are hoping to convince lawmakers to back a new public vote on whether Britain should follow through on plans to leave the European Union. The march is due to conclude outside Parliament, which has so far failed to agree on a formal exit deal with the bloc. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Theresa May and EU leaders agreed to postpone Brexit, hoping to allow parliament time to pass a deal. Brexit: May antagonizes UK Parliament with public address | DW News

10:20
Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel has confirmed that the EU could approve Britain's request for a short extension to Brexit. Merkel told German lawmakers that the EU could back a delay if British lawmakers passed the British prime minister's withdrawal deal in a vote next week. This despite the fact that it has already been rejected twice. Chancellor Merkel's comments were part of a policy speech to the German parliament ahead of an EU summit that starts today in Brussels. She began her speech by saying she favored a delay if it meant an orderly Brexit that was able to resolve the issues surrounding the Irish border. Meanwhile British prime minister Theresa May used a national TV address to give her fellow parliamentarians a good telling off. May's Brexit deal defeated by 149 votes (Live replay)

11:54:50
BRITAIN was tonight plunged into chaos once again as MPs voted to kill off Theresa May's Brexit deal by 391 votes to 242. Now 993 days after the referendum, and with just 17 days before Brexit, Brits are still in the dark about when or if we will ever leave the EU. Furious MPs blasted the uncertainty - saying the "wretched soap opera of Brexit continues" as the country heads "back to square one". Parliament has repeatedly voted against Mrs May's strategy for leaving the EU on March 29. But without a clear alternative on the table, the latest defeat opens the door to a range of wildly different outcomes - from a cliff-edge No Deal to a second referendum which could cancel Brexit entirely. Tomorrow MPs will vote on whether Britain should quit the EU without a deal in 17 days' time. But they are expected to oppose the idea - and will instead back a delay to Brexit in a further vote likely to take place on Thursday. Tory MP Bob Seely, who voted for the deal, warned that tonight's result would "prolong the Brexit purgatory" and "grab defeat from the jaws of victory". He added: "This entire episode is becoming a shambles that reflects appallingly on this current House of Commons. There are now no good options." And Lib Dem Layla Moran, a backer of the pro-EU Best for Britain group, told The Sun: "The Prime Minister has failed the country. Three years on and we're back to square one. It's humiliating." She said Mrs May should "hang her head in shame" and called for an immediate delay to the Article 50 process... Brexit delayed - what happens now?

15:52
Brexit will be delayed by a fortnight, and perhaps longer, after EU leaders agreed last night that they didn't want Britain to face a cliff-edge in a week's time. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) They told Theresa May that, if MPs back her deal next week, the UK would leave on 22 May. If she fails to get the Commons' backing, she would have until 12 April to decide what to do next. That could mean a no-deal Brexit on that day. Any longer extension would require MPs and the government to agree a new compromise deal with the EU and commit to holding EU elections. ------- Watch more of our explainer series here - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list... Theresa May delays UK Brexit vote

10:32
Britain's big Brexit decision was delayed, as Prime Minister Theresa May pulled the plug on the December 11th parliamentary vote on her deal for the country to leave the European Union. May admitted the decision to delay the vote was made after it became clear she would lose it "by a significant margin" and she will now go back to EU leaders to seek further reassurances. The embattled leader told the UK House of Commons that she had listened "very carefully to what has been said in this chamber and out of it" -- a statement that was met by laughter and jeering by members of Parliament. May admitted that "there remains widespread and deep concern" over the Northern Ireland backstop. The backstop is an arrangement designed to ensure there is no return to a "hard border" between Ireland, which will remain part of the European Union after Brexit, and Northern Ireland when the UK leaves the bloc next March. The prime minister said she had hoped changes secured to the backstop, to avoid being trapped in it indefinitely, would be enough for MPs. Tusk: "I am more pro-British than you"

BRITAIN must choose between Theresa May's deal and a No Deal Brexit, the EU warned. European leaders were set to sign off on a Brexit delay - pushing our exit date back to May 22. But they said that the extension will take effect only if MPs approve the PM's deal next week - and it CAN'T go beyond two months. UK MPs reject a no-deal Brexit - BBC News

MPs have voted by 312 to 308 to reject leaving the EU without a withdrawal agreement. It is not a legally-binding decision - and it does not rule out the UK leaving the EU. But it means MPs could now get a vote on delaying Brexit. That vote would take place on Thursday, and if it is passed - and the EU agrees to it - the UK will not leave the EU as planned on 29 March. Monumental defeat for Brexit sparks chaos

15:04
Theresa May's Brexit deal has been crushed by a record margin as British lawmakers rejected it by 432 votes to 202. After eight days of parliamentary debate and 200 speeches, members of the House of Commons ignored the Prime Minister's final pleas and delivered a humiliating verdict on her plan to take Britain out of the European Union. The result -- the worst parliamentary defeat for a British government in the modern era -- means the Prime Minister now faces a deep political crisis, with no clear path out of the mess. Speaking moments after May's humiliating defeat, opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn put forward a motion of no confidence in May's government. Corbyn said the challenge would allow the Commons to "give its verdict on the sheer incompetence of this Government." "WAKE UP BRITAIN!" - Graham Hughes in FIERY #Brexit Debate

Since they don't allow people who know what they're talking about on mainstream media in the UK, I took the opportunity to appear on Iranian state news to give Brexit Jihadist Andre Walker hell for his lies and misinformation. I know Press TV is not an ideal platform, but this went out live, unedited and I wasn't briefed on what I could or couldn't say. Let it be known: if there's an apologist for Brexit brave enough to try and take me on, I won't say no. To Andre that's not a problem. Not a problem that the taxes on the profits from those assets and the handling of those assets are now going to a foreign exchequer. I assume he's rich enough not to care. Are you? This is me: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Hughes This is Andre. I think: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Walker 😉

Brexit: David Cameron resigns as UK votes to leave - BBC News

06:28
Prime Minister David Cameron is to step down by October after the UK voted to leave the European Union. Mr Cameron made the announcement in a statement outside Downing Street after the final result was announced. He said he would attempt to "steady the ship" over the coming weeks and months but that "fresh leadership" was needed. The PM had urged the country to vote Remain, warning of economic and security consequences of an exit, but the UK voted to Leave by 52% to 48%. More drama is expected in the British parliament today after lawmakers rejected a no-deal withdrawal from the EU. Voting last night paves the way for another vote today to delay Britain's exit date beyond March 29th. But British Prime Minister Theresa May has also set out plans for a third parliamentary vote on her overall Brexit deal with Europe. That vote is supposed to be held by March 20th. UK PM Theresa May's Brexit statement- BBC News

13:10
Theresa May says concerns have been expressed about leaving the EU without a deal, with calls for it to be ruled out. She says the best way to rule out a no deal Brexit is to agree a deal with the EU. The only other way is to extend Article 50, something she says the EU is unlikely to agree to without a clear plan of how an agreement can be reached. When people say the government should rule out no deal, she says they are essentially saying "we should revoke Article 50". This doesn't respect the Brexit vote, she says. Others are calling for a second referendum, she says, but "our duty is to implement the first one". She is concerned about the precedent that would set for future refendums. She says she does not know what Jeremy Corbyn believes regarding this, as he has "not engaged". Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog #Brexit #BBCNews
