Currency clampdown hits Chinese overseas investment

Chinese investors found themselves forbidden from purchasing foreign currency for overseas investments in January. Individual investors and property agents say this intervention by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange to raise scrutiny on foreign currency buying has already cooled people’s passion for overseas investment. Talking Points: • There are many that believe the Trump administration is approaching the trade war with no explicit strategy in mind • Rather than simple anarchy, the US is likely pursuing the pressure it deems necessary to force China to capitulate • Rapid escalation looks to apply pressure during China's transition while neutralizing the Yuan, meaning the drive will persist Have questions about global macro thremes like trade wars, the US Dollar and Chinese Yuan or anything else trade related? China's Bond Market to Further Open Up to Outside World: Officials

02:26
China's bond market will further open up to the outside world, said officials on Friday in Beijing. Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of the People's Bank of China, and Pan Gongsheng, Deputy Governor of the bank and head of Chinese State Administration of Foreign Exchange, made the remarks in response to a question about the opening up of China's bond market at a press conference on financial reform and development on the sidelines of the annual sessions of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. "Opening up is always a part of China's bond market work, and there is no any out-of-the-way move in any year. The improvement last year is that the internationalization of the RMB was further promoted and the RMB was put in the special drawing rights of the International Monetary Fund, all of which are in favor of promoting foreign investors' interest and enthusiasm in China's bond market. We have put forward some relevant policies, but not any out-of-the-way policies. China never intends to seek that the RMB bonds can be registered in a certain bond index, but we will advance in this direction. We will make more obvious progress in the opening up gradually," said Zhou. To echo Zhou, Pan mentioned some improvements in China's bond market opening up work last year. "Many international financial organizations, foreign governments, well-known international financial institutions and enterprises have issued bonds in China's bond market so far. By the end of last year, panda bonds was issued worth over 60 billion yuan. The World Bank also issued SDR bonds in China. Over 400 overseas investors have invested about 800 billion yuan in China's bond market. The number of overseas investors increased by more than 100 last year, and the investment amount increased by 150 billion yuan. In addition, we can see that on March 1, Bloomberg has issued two new indexes, and China's bond market has been registered in them. Citigroup also announced several days ago that it planned to place China's bond market into three indexes," said Pan. http://www.cctvplus.com/news/20170310/8045013.shtml#!language=1 Subscribe us on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CCTVPlus CCTV+ official website: http://www.cctvplus.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cctv-news-content Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NewsContent.CCTVPLUS Twitter: https://twitter.com/CCTV_Plus
London Should Love its Bankers

Check out the Intelligence Squared website to hear about future live events and podcasts: http://www.intelligencesquared.com __________________________ This debate took place in the Royal Geographical Society on 9 October 2012. For more Intelligence Squared events, visit http://www.intelligencesquared.com Do the British have a death wish? You'd be forgiven for thinking so the way so many of them seem to want to cripple the most dynamic part of their own economy. What is the world's largest market for dollars? London. Where does the Chinese State Administration of Foreign Exchange go when it wants to buy or sell billions of US Treasury bonds? London. Which sector of the economy delivers £12 out of every £100 in tax to the Chancellor of the Exchequer? London's financial centre. Its accumulated skills, its light touch regulation, its openness to competition -- these have made London the envy of the world, the magnet for all the smartest financiers: they have turned London into the most exciting city to live in on the planet. Of course there have been scandals -- what do you expect in the world's most competitive market place? Yet instead of lauding London's banks for their achievement in outclassing all their rivals, we seem interested only in penalising them and letting New York or Frankfurt steal the show. Stop it. Learn to love London's bankers. That's the line being sold by those who love the City. But when you start allocating blame for the financial crisis, when you think that it was deals done in London that led to the downfall of Lehman Brothers, AIG and Bear Stearns; when you consider the bonus culture, the Libor scandal, the money-laundering of Mexican drug money -- can you really buy it?

What’s behind Trump’s trade war with China

09:49
Chinese and Trump administration officials are supposed to meet later this week to hammer out a trade agreement, but the challenge may be more difficult now that Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods. NPR’s Laura Sullivan talks to Yamiche Alcindor about how Trump’s more hawkish advisers are influencing his policy to depart from that of previous administrations. Is the U.S.–China trade war coming to an end anytime soon?

01:37
Does the leader of Hong Kong appear weaker withdrawing the extradition bill? Well as we'd say in Australia, "Is the Pope a Catholic?" Of course. This means that Carrie Lam's authority within the Hong Kong SAR is reduced and her standing in Beijing is reduced as well. But I think the bottom line is that China will resist any efforts to remove her from office, despite local pressure. Is the US – China trade war coming to an end anytime soon? Depends Dr. Bremmer on what your definition of "any time soon" happens to be. My prediction is simply this: once they get to the G20 meeting in Osaka Xi Jinping and President Trump will agree to reboot the negotiations process but then it's a question of the substance of the deal. My prediction is A) there will be a deal sometime between now and the end of the year. And secondly, the nature of the deal will be America yielding on the questions of tariffs to the Chinese and China yielding to the Americans on the amount that President Trump expects in the purchasing order of future American goods by the Chinese. That's my bottom line. Both countries need the economic outcome. Both countries therefore have a deep interest in securing a deal. Doesn't mean the end of the economic war however, technology reigns supreme. Trump, Xi to Restart Trade Taks at Japan G-20

03:04
The U.S. and China said their presidents will meet in Japan next week to relaunch trade talks after a month-long stalemate, triggering a rally in financial markets. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he had a “very good” phone conversation with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The two leaders will hold an “extended meeting” at the G-20 summit on June 28-29 in Osaka and “our respective teams will begin talks prior to our meeting,” Trump said on Twitter. The U.S. president had repeatedly threatened more tariffs if Xi spurned the opportunity to talk. Xi said he’s willing to meet with Trump and exchange views, the state-run China Central Television reported. The two nations’ economic and trade teams should keep in contact on how to solve differences, according to the statement. The dispute covers areas ranging from tariffs to Chinese intellectual-property protections. U.S. stocks extended gains on the news, while Treasuries retreated. The S&P 500 rose 1.2% at 11:30 a.m. in New York. Talks with Beijing broke off last month after the U.S. accused China’s leaders of reneging on provisions of a tentative trade agreement and Beijing said the U.S. raised its demands. Trump raised tariffs on about $200 billion of Chinese imports to 25%, and said he would expand the tariffs to cover another $325 billion in goods -- essentially everything the country exports to the U.S. -- unless Chinese leaders reversed course. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told senators at a hearing in Washington on Tuesday that the Trump administration will stay tough. “Our economic relationship with China has been unbalanced and grossly unfair to American farmers, ranchers and businesses for decades,” Lighthizer said in testimony to the Senate Finance Committee. On top of existing tariffs, the administration is prepared to do more “if certain issues cannot be resolved satisfactorily,” he added. But while expectations have been raised for a breakthrough during the leaders’ face-to-face meeting, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross over the weekend downplayed the prospect of a major deal in the near term. “I think the most that will come out of the G-20 might be an agreement to actively resume talks,” possibly with new ground rules and a schedule, Ross said in an interview Sunday with the Wall Street Journal. Trump has said that China must return to concessions it made in earlier rounds of talks. The U.S. president has repeated his claim that Chinese exporters pay the tariffs, disputing the consensus of economists that the costs are largely borne by U.S. importers and consumers. “They subsidize their industry, so our people are not paying,” Trump said Friday in an interview with Fox News. “There’s this big thing about tariffs, ‘Oh, our people pay.’ It’s a lot of nonsense. You know what happens, really? Companies move back.” Trump’s announcement of the call came shortly after a tweet in which he again accused China and other countries of manipulating their currencies, “making it unfairly easier for them to compete with the USA.” China made moves to strengthen its currency earlier this month. During Trump’s presidency the U.S. Treasury Department has repeatedly refrained from officially accusing China of manipulating the yuan.

China's new rule on Administration of Enterprise Income Tax (EIT)

01:03:20
China's State Administration of Taxation (SAT) published new guidance (Bulletin 37) on 27 October 2017, accompanied by an official interpretation, that revises the rules governing the administration of withholding tax on China-source income derived by NREs. The new rule provides clearer guidance on the collection of EIT on China-source income derived by NREs and resolves some practical issues that have existed until now. It also includes measures to reduce the administrative burden on withholding agents, coordinate responsibilities among different Chinese tax authorities, and generally improve the business environment. Bulletin 37 repeals the previous Provisional Administration Measures on Administration of EIT Withheld on China-source income derived by NREs (Circular Guoshuifa [2009] No. 3), Administration Measures of EIT for Income Derived by Non-REs from Equity Transfers (Circular Guoshuihan [2009] No. 698), as well as some relevant articles in other circulars. The issuance of Bulletin 37, which is welcome news for both NREs and withholding agents, generally will apply as from 1 December 2017, but some provisions will also apply to income that has arisen but not been dealt with before the effective date. Learn about China tax authorities' latest administrative trends on EIT withheld at source for Non-REs. (Live presentation was aired on 7 Dec 2017) http://www.deloitte.com/ap/dbriefs

Chinese President Xi Jinping Almost Falls Off Stage

00:16
Chinese President Xi Jinping narrowly avoided taking a stage dive at an International Economic Forum in St Petersberg. Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized the United States for using pressure and sanctions to maintain its economic supremacy, saying it spawns chaos in global affairs. Speaking Friday at an investment forum in St. Petersburg, Putin said the U.S. attempt to “spread its jurisdiction to the entire world” challenges the global order. He said globalization “becomes a parody of itself when common international rules are replaced with laws, administrative and judicial mechanisms of one country or a group of countries.” Flanked by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the forum’s panel, Putin said the U.S. action against Chinese telecom giant Huawei represented an attempt to “blatantly squeeze it out of the global market.” It is, he said, “the first technological war of the digital era.” Putin warned that the “fragmentation of the global economic space, the policy of unrestrained political egoism” paves the way to “endless conflicts and trade wars ... fights without rules between all.” The Russian leader accused the U.S. of turning the dollar into an “instrument of pressure,” undermining trust in the U.S. dollar, the world’s major reserve currency. He also criticized U.S. attempts to hamper the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline intended to carry Russian natural gas to Germany and further on in Europe, saying it reflects the U.S. desire to win advantages for itself. Putin hailed Russia-China relations, saying that their cooperation in the global arena is “a major factor of stability in global affairs.” He emphasized that “we aren’t creating a military union and we aren’t working against anyone,” adding that Moscow remains open to expanding ties with the European Union and the United States. Xi said Russia and China would coordinate their efforts in the energy sphere more closely. The Chinese leader noted that the current global trade system needs fine-tuning but spoke strongly against protectionism, warning that globalization can’t be stopped. Study in China [ Part 2 ] - International Students in Wuhan #haniV

05:29
Welcome to my Video. Hope can Inspire you... ===================================== Wuhan University of Technology (WUT or WHUT) - located in Wuhan, Hubei, China - was merged on May 27, 2000, from the former three universities, Wuhan University of Technology (established in 1948), Wuhan Transportation University (established in 1946) and Wuhan Automotive Polytechnic University (established in 1958). WUT is one of the leading Chinese universities accredited by the Ministry of Education and one of the universities constructed in priority by the "State Project 211" for Chinese higher education institutions. ===================== History Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) was founded on May 27, 2000 from the former Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan Transportation University and Wuhan Automotive Polytechnic University. Each of these three universities has its own uniquely important history. The former Wuhan University of Technology dated back from three colleges, namely, Zhongnan Construction Engineering College in 1952, Shenyang Building Materials Industry College in 1958 and Beijing Institute of Building Engineering in 1958. Then in 1971, Beijing Institute of Building Engineering merged with Wuhan Construction Engineering School and thus formed Hubei Construction Industry College. Later in 1978, the college was awarded the title as national key university and then changed its name to Wuhan Institute of Building Materials. In 1985, the college changed its name to Wuhan University of Technology, which later passed the evaluation of "State 211 Project" in 1996 and entered into the direct administration of the Ministry of Education in 1998 before its merge with the other two universities in May 2000. The former Wuhan Transportation University mainly originated from National Maritime Vocational School in 1946.Then in 1949, the college changed its name to Wuhan Transportation College. in 1952, the college changed its name to Wuhan River Transportation College. Later in 1957, the college changed its name to Wuhan University of Water Transportation Engineering which then received the discipline adjustment by the Ministry of Transportation in 1963. More importantly, the college merged with Wuhan River Transportation School and thus got its name as Wuhan University of Water Transportation Engineering. Later in 1993, the college was officially named as Wuhan Transportation University by the Ministry of Transportation before its merge with the other two universities in May 2000. The former Wuhan Automotive Polytechnic University came from the original Wuhan Institute of Technology which was founded in 1958. In 1959, it was merged into Hubei Chemical Engineering College. Then in 1961, the college merged with the other two colleges, respectively, Wuhan Institute of Technology and Hubei Industry College and thus named itself Wuhan Institute of Technology. During the next fifteen years, the Institute underwent great changes and was forced to change its name due to China's Cultural Revolution. Then in 1979, the Institute regained its name as Wuhan Institute of Technology. Later from 1983 to 1994, the Institute showed its rapid development in many aspects. Then in 1995, the Institute changed its name to Wuhan Automotive Polytechnic University. What was more, in 1999, Hubei No.1 Mechanical Industry School and Hubei Energy Economy School were merged into the university. Later in May 2000, it merged with the other two universities mentioned in the beginning and thus formed Wuhan University of Technology. ==================== Currently, the university owns 23 academic schools, 9 state key disciplines, 74 Doctoral programs, 135 Master's programs as well as 82 Bachelor's programs. WUT has about 5,570 staff members, including 650 professors, 3 academicians of China Academy of Engineering and 3 academicians of China Academy of Science. Besides, over 36,000 undergraduates, 16000 postgraduates (including Master and PhD students), and 327 international students are studying at WUT. The university has extensively established academic links with more than sixty external universities and institutions. The university has engaged more than one hundred famous foreign scholars as Concurrent or Honorary Professors for the university, and often receives experts, scholars and professors from other countries or regions to teach or do research. The university also sends abroad a number of teachers, professors, and scholars to study and to attend international academic conferences each year. Some of them have been engaged as Guest Professor, Special Professor or Lecturer by foreign host institutions. In 1950 the university began to admit foreign students. ============= Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/emhanief/

Explained: US-China trade war (Impact on the Middle East)

04:32
Just when we think the US-China trade war couldn’t get worse, China’s Xi Jinping would play his surprise “trump” card out of the blue or US President Donald Trump would put out an offensive tweet that would further escalate the war. Unfortunately nations and industries across the world are getting affected by the war between the US and China given their economic significance and scale. (We saw that with the ongoing Huawei fiasco) ABTV's Shruthi Nair breaks down the US-China trade war for you and helps you understand the impact it has on the GCC. I’m going to go back to the US general elections of 2016 where Trump had vowed to cancel trade deals and go on an offensive against Chinese economic practices. That’s when it all started. The very next year, in 2017, The US launched an investigation into China’s trade policies. Following this, there were trade barriers and heavy taxes worth billions of dollars imposed on Chinese goods. Why? 1. To penalise China for their controversial practices like forcing foreign businesses to hand over their most prized technology to Chinese companies — many of which are state-owned — in exchange for access to their market. 2. These tariffs would make US-made products cheaper than imported ones, and encourage consumers to buy American. 3. Washington also demanded that China reduce its $375 billion trade deficit with the US, and introduce “verifiable measures” for protection of Intellectual Property Rights, technology transfer, and more access to American goods in Chinese markets. What kind of tariffs are we talking about? The Trade war officially began in 2018 when the Trump administration followed through with its threat to impose tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese product. The goods marked for tariffs also faced a punishing 25 percent border tax when they’re imported into the US. China responded by imposing 25 percent tariffs on $34 billion worth of US goods, including soybeans, automobiles, and lobsters. Last year, the US imposed three rounds of tariffs on more than $250bn worth of Chinese goods. Beijing hit back with tariffs on $110bn of US goods, accusing the US of starting "the largest trade war in economic history". Doesn’t end there. The US raised tariffs on $200bn of Chinese products to 25% from 10% last month. The US has also started the process for hitting an additional $300bn of Chinese goods with tariffs. Now let’s look at the impact all of this has on this region To begin with, the stock market takes a hit every time there is a new round of tariffs imposed. Last month, the Dubai Financial Market lost nearly four per cent to close at 2,525; while the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange nosedived 3.3 per cent to 4,929. Saudi Arabia's Tadawul lost 3.55 per cent, while the Bahrain Stock Exchange fell 0.81 per cent and Boursa Kuwait dropped 1.37 per cent. Trade and integrated supply chains are important to demand for petroleum, which is the premier transportation fuel. Less trade means less demand for oil, which will hit GCC producers such as Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait. Several of the GCC countries have signed up to Beijing’s ambitious Belt and Road plan. The initiative wants to bring back to life the trading routes of the ancient Silk Road. Oman and the UAE, especially, contribute to and benefit from the scheme both as logistics — and manufacturing — hubs. This could be drastically affected if the situation worsens. And as you know, Huawei has been caught in the tug of war between the US and China. This also means that Intel Qualcomm and Broadcom will lose one of their most important clients once the three months’ grace period has expired. Since some companies in the US have also started feeling the pinch The UAE's Economy Minister Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori last year had said the Emirates hopes to resolve the tariff issues with the Trump administration in 2019. This is 2019 and things just seem to be getting worse. We will bring you updates on this story so dn’t fo0rget to subscribe and comment below.

Obama administration off to rocky start with China

03:06
There have been signs of tension between the U.S. and China recently. The U.S. Treasury Secretary-designate Tim Geithner accused the Chinese of manipulating their currency, and the Chinese censored President Barack Obamas inauguration address. However, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton might make her first overseas trip to Asia, including China. Orville Schell, the director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society, joins Martin Savidge to discuss the importance of bilateral relations with China, areas of cooperation between the countries and Clintons potential trip. Trump administration set to slap additional tariffs on Chinese goods worth US$200 bil.: Report

01:27
WSJ "트럼프, 이르면 17일 2천억불 중국산에 관세 부과" U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly directed his aides to proceed with fresh tariffs on Chinese goods. The Wall Street Journal reports, the measures could be announced as early as Monday. Kim Hyo-sun has the latest. The Trump administration is set to announce additional tariffs on Chinese goods worth some two-hundred billion U.S. dollars. Citing a senior government official,... the Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that the new tariffs could come as early as Monday local time. It also explained that the new tariffs, as instructed by President Trump, will be set at ten percent,... lower than the initial figure of 25 percent. President Trump has signaled numerous times during the past weeks that he could slap additional tariffs on a wide range of consumer goods manufactured in China. Aside from such measures,... U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has made clear that high-level talks aimed at alleviating the trade tensions between Washington and Beijing will be held late next week. While the U.S. aims to squeeze Beijing,... the Trump administration's additional tariffs could jeopardize the discussions,... and lead to fresh retaliation from China. The trade war was initiated by Washington's 25 percent tariff on 34 billion dollars worth of Chinese goods in July,... prompting China to hit back with its own levies on American goods worth the same amount. Foreign investment, co-op within BRICS key for economic upturn of Brazil

05:11
As Michel Temer was sworn in as Acting President of Brazil on May 12, he faced the worst economic recession in decades, with unemployment, inflation and budget deficit torturing the 200 million people in this largest emerging market in Latin America, or the seventh in the world. (Soundbite) Ronnie Lins, Director of Center of China-Brazil Research and Business “The economic figures for the first quarter is disappointing, with the unemployment rate rising to 10.7 percent, which is the quarterly worst in history. In this sense, I think Mr. Temer should first of all tell people the truth.” (Soundbite) Ana Amelia Lemos, Senator “The previous government should be responsible for the economic instability which aggravates the recession. Brazil is downgraded in investment rating, while inflation soars and unemployment swells. There are now 1.1 million Brazilians without job.” Among Temer’s all-white-male Cabinet, former central bank chief Henrique Meirelles is a familiar face, which showcases the interim head of state’s determination to intall a business-friendly administration. (Soundbite) Ronnie Lins, Director of Center of China-Brazil Research and Business “Temer should produce urgent economic measures, because the situation is worrying. He needs a sound plan, possibly including privatization and seeking support and investors from friendly countries. He needs to grow trustworthy and show the world that Brazil is stable and functions well, which can convince investors to put their money back here.” (Soundbite) Ana Amelia Lemos, Senator “It would be worse if not for our abundance of raw materials of agriculture and food. The fluctuation of exchange rates between our currency and U.S. dollar is beneficial for agricultural production, which is more vigorous than industry, trade and service. Industrial production is affected the most. All industrial sectors don’t have good performance.” A slash of 4,000 high-level public sector aides within the year is the first shot in arm for the government to cut spending and lower the budget decifit. More liberal reforms are believed to follow. (Soundbite) Hélio José, Senator “This is only the beginning. We all expect the Brazilian economy to regain growth. China is a member country of the BRICS group, which also includes other emerging countries like Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa. A return to normalcy will help us attract investment from these countries.” Yes, as a BRICS member, Brazil has some reliable parteners to count on. (Soundbite) Ronnie Lins, Director of Center of China-Brazil Research and Business “The BRICS countries will adopt more concrete platforms, like the BRICS Bank (New Development Bank). After all, the mechanism for BRICS has just been initiated and needs to be improved in many regards. I personally think that the BRICS countries should strive for innovation.” (Soundbite) Cristovam Buarque, Senator “If Brazil wants to catch up with China, it should reform its education. It can lift us into an innovative country to rhythm with the current development of the world, which is guided by knowledge in an economic sense.” In up to 180 days, if President Dilma Rousseff is eventually impeached, Temer will serve out her remaining term until the end of 2018. More than two and half years is more or less enough for him to leave his stamp on this country, if the right solution is adopted. (Soundbite) Cristovam Buarque, Senator “We relax over the suspension of Dilma Rousseff, as many investors will return to Brazil. Trust needs to be reestablished, which requires time and patience. It takes months or years to regain the level of confidence like years ago.”

Facebook takes down Huawei adverts criticizing U.S. spy claims

02:02
페이스북, 美 제재 조치 반박하는 화웨이 광고 차단 Facebook has removed from its platform ads by Huawei slamming the claims by the U.S. that it's been spying on its users on behalf of the Chinese government. Meanwhile, Huawei has put a number on the impact it expects to see from the Trump administration's blacklisting of it. Kim Da-mi has the details. Facebook is taking a tough stance on Huawei advertisements for being too political. The U.K.-based daily The Telegraph reported on Sunday that the social network recently removed several ads purchased by the Chinese tech giant for violating its transparency rules. In one of the ads, posted at the end of May and taken down last week, Huawei warned against "mixing politics with technology," featuring a quote from its chairman, Ren Zhenfei. Reaching over a million users in a month, the ad ran without a disclaimer about who paid for it,...which is a requirement for Facebook ads "about social issues, elections or politics." The Trump administration blacklisted Huawei last month amid concerns the Chinese firm could use its equipment to spy on other nations on behalf of the Chinese government. Ever since, the U.S. has been lobbying its allies to rebuff the company's 5G network proposals. Huawei, however, continues to deny Washington's claims. While running an online ad campaign to try and convince people it's trustworthy, the chairman of Huawei said the tech giant will miss sales forecasts by about 30 billion dollars over the next couple of years because of the U.S. campaign. Ren Zhenfei said Huawei is expected to post revenue of about 100 billion dollars in 2019, a decline from last year's 107 billion dollars. While his comments seem to reveal the weight of the blacklisting on Huawei's financial outlook, Ren did not specify how he reached the 30 billion dollar figure or his forecast for the company's 2020 revenue outlook. China set to improve fiscal policy amid trade war with U.S.

02:29
中, 미중무역전쟁 장기전 대비…재정•금융정책 강화 The Chinese government's blueprint to boosting economic growth is unveiled by Beijing's state media. It's a mix of fiscal and monetary measures, including tax cuts for firms investing in research and development. Our Ko Roon-hee explains further. Amid its trade war with the United States, China has unveiled new measures to prevent economic slowdown by boosting domestic demand. According to China's state radio on Monday, Premier Li Keqiang announced at a cabinet meeting that the fiscal policy will become more active…and will focus on cutting taxes for companies that are spending money on research and development. The Chinese government is expected to provide tax cuts of 9.6 billion U.S. dollars this year. In terms of the monetary policy, the Cabinet said it will speed up the issuing of special bonds to finance local government infrastructure projects. The government also promised loans for about 150-thousand small firms each year. Meanwhile… The People's Bank of China set the yuan midpoint rate at 6-point-7891 against the U.S. dollar Tuesday…its weakest since July 2017. Although some say the yuan's depreciation is partially the result of Chinese policies, an economic expert says there are other external factors. "Because the U.S. economy is doing so well, there is a good chance that the Fed will keep raising the interest rates. And the interest rate differential between U.S. and China will also depreciate the yuan even without the efforts by China. So, I think the yuan depreciation is the result of policies from both countries…rather than due to just one country." This expert believes China aims to boost domestic demand and increase exports for overall economic growth. "GDP consists of domestic spending plus exports. And because the Chinese growth rate seems to be slowing down..it will be in their interest to increase both domestic expenditures and exports to maintain their GDP growth." The moves come during the escalating trade conflict between the United States and China… which have so far imposed tariffs on 34-billion dollars worth of each other's goods. Cruz: "Well, we'll see where he stands, but what I will tell you Laura..." Trump calls Biden a 'dummy' as he heads to Iowa

04:37
(11 Jun 2019) Preparing to hold dueling events in Iowa Tuesday, President Donald Trump is employing schoolyard taunts for his leading Democratic presidential rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. Speaking to the press on the White House South Lawn, Trump said of Biden, "I think he's the weakest mentally" of the 2020 field and referred to Biden as "a dummy." Trump addressed reporters from the White House before departing for Iowa to deliver remarks on energy and attend a political fundraiser. Trump said Biden was wrong to say that China was not a competitor of the U.S., and says that during the Obama administration, China "ate our country alive." On China, the president said he expects to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping "very shortly," likely at the G-20 summit at the end of the month. Trump said the two countries still "have a very good relationship." Biden is holding events in the first-in-the-nation caucus state Tuesday, including delivering a speech in which he is expected to call Trump an "existential threat" to the nation. U.S. sanctions 4 entities including Russian bank for North Korea-related activity

02:11
美, 北 거래 러시아 은행 등 4곳 제재..."비핵화까지 계속" The Trump administration has imposed its first sanctions on Pyongyang since the North Korea-U.S. summit in June. Those tartgeted include a Russian bank and a North Korean individual...once again pressuring the North to make visible actions towards denuclearization. Kim Mok-yeon has more. On Friday, the United States imposed sanctions on a Russian bank, a North Korean businessman based in Moscow, and two firms allegedly working as front companies for a North Korean bank. The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control said that it is sanctioning the Agrosoyuz Commercial Bank, for allegedly facilitating a transaction with Han Jang-su, a person blacklisted by Washington for involvement in North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Han is the Moscow-based chief representative of the Foreign Trade Bank, which is the primary foreign exchange bank of North Korea. The treasury also added Ri Jong-won , the deputy representative of the FTB to the blacklist, and stressed that the two representatives of the North Korean bank should be expelled from Russia under the UN resolutions. It also slapped sanctions on two suspected front companies for the FTB -- Dandong Zhongsheng Industry & Trade, based in China, and Korea Ungum Corporation, based in Pyongyang. The U.S. government also urged the UN Security Council to include these entities on its sanctions list. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that the U.S. will continue to enforce UN and U.S. sanctions and shut down illicit revenue streams to Pyongyang until it achieves the final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is in Singapore to attend the ASEAN regional forum also highlighted the significance of sanctioning the regime. "We appreciate ASEAN's ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in the region, support the rule of law in the South China Sea and to strictly enforce sanctions on North Korea." Along with efforts to negotiate with the North, such as exchanging letters with Kim Jong-un, it seems like the Trump administration is at the same time trying to increase the pressure on the regime through stricter sanctions to achieve denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. A history of the Kashmir conflict | The Economist

02:39
In 1947 Britain prepared to end nearly a century of rule over the Indian subcontinent and its 390 million people. Hindus were concentrated in central and southern India, Muslims in Bengal in the northwest. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2GgNrtt A British Commission divided the territory into majority Muslim Pakistan and majority Hindu India. In the chaos that followed partition, 15 million people fled across the new borders and 500,000 died in rioting. Four border regions saw the worst of it: Sindh, Bengal, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. Among India's 565 princely states only Jammu and Kashmir had a Hindu Maharajah ruling over a majority Muslim population. India claimed the Maharaja decided to join India. Pakistan disputed this. In October Pashtuns from Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province invaded Kashmir with the support of Pakistan's government. In October of 1947 the Maharaja left Srinagar. Indian troops were airlifted in but were ill-prepared for the cold and altitude. Pakistan responded with its own campaign and India approached the United Nations to broker a ceasefire which went into effect on January 1st 1949, establishing a line of control but no final border. In 1962 China attacked India in the Aksai Chin region of Kashmir easily defeating India's poorly equipped Himalayan troops. China retains control of the Aksai Chin today. Three years later encouraged by China's success Pakistan sent troops across the line of control dressed as Kashmiri locals - the fighting proved brief and inconclusive. On September 22nd both sides agreed to a un-backed ceasefire. Another brief war broke out over East Pakistan in 1971 - this one conclusive. East Pakistan seceded. Ten million refugees streamed into West Bengal and, with India's help, Bangladesh was born. In 1999 after both India and Pakistan had successfully tested nuclear weapons, full-scale war was barely avoided when Pakistan tried to seize the cargill region of indian-controlled Kashmir. At one time an average of one Pakistani soldier every four days and one Indian soldier every other day died at the Siachen glacier and the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 were reportedly planned by senior members of lashkar-e-taiba, which Pakistan created to fight Indian domination of Kashmir and which India accuses of terrorist atrocities all over India. The conflict simmers in 2007, 777 people were killed in violence in Jammu and Kashmir bringing the two decade total above 47,000 by India's official count. according to some Kashmiris the total is twice that number. Trump refuses to commit to ‘One China’ policy

02:11
US President-elect Donald Trump warns that he would not commit to the ‘one China policy’ unless Beijing changes its currency and trade practices. In an interview with Wall Street Journal, Trump said he may NOT officially brand China a currency manipulator after he takes office, as he had promised earlier. He said his future policies toward Beijing are currently under negotiation. Trump recently stirred tensions with China when he spoke with Taiwan’s president. The US president-elect also added that the newly-imposed sanctions on Russia would remain “at least for a period of time”. However he added that if Russia is helpful in fighting terrorism and other matters, the sanctions could be lifted. The Obama administration has imposed sanctions on Moscow over its involvement in the Ukraine conflict and alleged cyber attacks during the US presidential election. China In The Time Of Trump

49:07
China has become the world’s second-largest economy and biggest trading nation. Much of its success has stemmed from friendly relations with the United States, where Republican and Democratic administrations alike saw the rise of a stable, prosperous China as serving the national interest. But things have changed. In the U.S., a Trump administration is likely to be less friendly. And in China, challenges are multiplying. The country is in a long-run growth slowdown, while trying to shift to a consumer-based economy and manage a rapidly aging population. Will China continue its rise towards superpower status, or fall victim to financial crisis? And will the U.S. and China find a modus vivendi in Asia, or start a new cold war? Arthur R. Kroeber, one of the world’s leading commentators on the Chinese economy and author of the recent book China’s Economy: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford, 2016), will provide insight into these crucial questions.
