07:20
In keeping with global coal market trends, Europe remains smothered in an excess of coal supply, seeing cheap thermal coal imported from Russia, Colombia and occasionally South Africa. This has been met with low demand from European utilities and high stocks stemming from several years of relatively subdued weather. Accompanied visually by the latest Platts and market data analysis, Jaime Concha, Platts Coal Trader International editor, examines the recent record lows in the European market, focusing on how this has been shaped by steady Colombian exports and wider macroeconomic factors.

BHP Billiton announces massive losses as demand for commodities slump

04:13
http://www.illuminatisilver.com http://www.facebook.com/illuminatisilver BHP Billiton announces massive losses as demand for commodities slump Today is Tuesday 23rd February 2016 and we are commenting very briefly on the results just announced for BHP Billiton. Mining giant BHP Billiton has posted a substantial half-year net loss of $5.67bn (£4bn). The figure for the six months to December compared with a profit of $5.35bn for the same period in 2014. BHP Billiton is one of the world's largest producers of major commodities including iron ore, metallurgical coal, copper and uranium, and has substantial interests in both conventional and shale oil and gas and energy coal. Lower commodity prices slashed revenue by 37% to $15.7bn, sending underlying profit down 92% to $412m and the company has warned that weak commodity prices will continue. Dividend payments to shareholders, were reduced from 62 cents a share to just 16 cents. Chairman Jac Nasser said BHP now believed the period of weaker prices and higher volatility would be prolonged. The decision to cut the dividend had not been made lightly but was a "determined response to changing markets", he said. Mining companies such as BHP have been under intense pressure as a slowdown in China's economy results in lower demand for key commodities, such as iron ore and coal. Why is this relevant you may ask? Well if anyone was in the slightest bit doubtful that Chinese demand for such products was not seriously lower or that world Industrial Growth is not in serious jeopardy, well here is just another landmark to suggest that they are. Naturally you can draw your own conclusions as to what this may mean for precious metals, but certainly for industrial metals 2016 is certainly not looking very bright. China’s Output Driving Commodity Prices

01:30
Chinese demand has long been the driving force in many global commodity markets. Now, expectations of falling production of goods from aluminium to coal are moving prices and getting more attention from investors. For example, last year, the world’s No 2 economy up-ended the global coal market by restricting the working days of the country’s producers to 276 from 330. The decision triggered a 25 per cent jump in China’s imports and a surge in global coal prices. Given China’s out-sized role as a producer, such volatility could spread to other commodities. The country ranks among the top three producers of commodities ranging from aluminium to zinc.

Strategic Minerals MD: domestic sales to shelter us from weaker coal price

05:47
John Peters, managing director of Strategic Minerals (LON:SML), says the firm’s local customer base should provide some shelter from the weaker price of coal. The commodity currently trades at multi-year lows due to a slowdown in global buying from the likes of India and China. However, Peters says the domestic market in New Zealand – where the firm’s Tatu project is located – should provide some protection and stable cash flow for the business. His comments come after the company told investors that it had entered contracts to produce a bulk sample from its Tatu project in New Zealand.

World Bank predicts a rise in crude prices will hike commodity prices

02:06
Commodity prices are high and set to get higher according to the World Bank. The reason behind this is an expected rise in the price of crude oil this year and the next. The lender kept its crude oil price forecast for 2017 unchanged at 55 U.S. dollars per barrel. The projection is unchanged from its previous forecast made in January. The rising oil prices will be supported by production cutbacks by members of OPEC and non-OPEC states. It forecasted the prices of energy commodities will rise 26 percent this year and the growth rate of price will slow down to 8 percent next year. Prices for non-energy commodities, which include agricultural products, fertilizers, metals and minerals, are projected to increase four percent this year and 0.7 percent Subscribe to us on YouTube: http://ow.ly/Zvqj30aIsgY Follow us on: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cgtnafrica/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/cgtnafrica
