The 25 COPING SKILLS Everyone MUST HAVE!

10:45
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy I think it would be cool to do a video like "25 coping skill ideas" I spent a lot of time trying to find healthy coping skills and as usual over thought it to the point I figured there was no other skills I could do I really wanted to talk about this question because I mention coping skills all the time, yet I am pretty sure I haven’t ever defined it or given you some ideas or options to help you get you started. First, let’s define coping skill: A coping skill is any characteristic or behavioral pattern that enhances a person's adaptation. Meaning that if we feel stress all the time, we can create these defense mechanisms, or coping skills to help us better manage or lessen the stress. These can be distraction techniques or tools to help us process through all that we may be feeling. Due to the 2 types of coping skills, I am going to break these into 2 sections. The first section will be all distraction techniques! So let’s jump into these techniques! Going for a walk - Getting some fresh air, moving your body and getting away from any of your unhealthy coping skills (like self injury tools, food to binge on, or alcohol to drink) can be a great distraction! Painting your nails! - This works if you struggle with purging, self injury, as well as many other issues. It makes us focus on one thing, and then we can’t do much with our hands until it dries. And by then, maybe the intense stress or urge to act out has passed. Blowing bubbles - yes I know children love this, but adults can too! It’s actually really relaxing to watch the bubbles grow and burst. I even have my patients imagine their issue is that bubble and when it pops let the bad or stressful thoughts go away too. Read a good book or listen to a wonderful audiobook. Exercise! Obviously this can only be done if it’s okay with our doctor and body. But moving and exercising regularly can lower our blood pressure, releases endorphins which can help boost our mood and reduce any pain we may be feeling. Deep breathing or breathing techniques. My breath of fire video: https://youtu.be/aT74nms0SBo Watching your favorite show or video series. Draw or doodle! Color! Duh! You knew this one was coming. I love to color, and it is just such a great distraction. There’s something about the feeling of a crayon or colored pencil on paper that is so relaxing to me. So maybe give it a try and see if it works for you! Do a crossword puzzle - or really any puzzle that you like. Writing down some positive or motivational quotes and sticking them up all over your house. Cleaning you house Playing music or even creating new playlists! And with that! Let’s move into the processing type of coping skills! Write a friend a nice card - Call or text a friend (calling is preferred) Impulse logs! Use feelings charts! Journaling - You knew this one was coming :) Sign up for my journal text club! https://create.getpurple.io/p/katimorton/ Feeling word collage - I have talked about these before too, but these are a great way to process through an emotion we may be experiencing. Write down 2-3 things you like about yourself and your situation. Talking to a therapist! Taking stock of how an emotion feels in our body Write a letter to our younger or older self. Write letters to those who are upsetting us still (but never send them) you can of course tear them up or burn them or whatever, but it can help to get out all that you have been wanting or needing to say but never got the chance. Mental Health Lesson - “Tennis Ball Toss” Resiliency

27:33
A "fly on the wall" look into our classroom. Full mental health lesson included! RESILIENCE: the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. Notice the ups and downs of classroom energy throughout the activity. The group of students were presented with a challenge-- watch and listen in as the class battles failure to finally achieve success. The tennis ball toss stirred the classroom with just a bit of movement to boost brain activity. The props are analogies, and this metaphorical look at mental health is meant to create connections and deeper understanding. This also helped create social connectedness, which is a huge piece in a person's developing mental health. You'll hear this group socialize throughout the activity. The reactions and chatter are all on-task; students are engaged and learning-- the quick side conversations are allowed because you'll hear they all involve thoughts about the class activity. Often, teenagers blurt out questions or comments because that's how they learn. These don't always need a response. In fact, you'll hear the group get louder and then quiet down to absolute silence as they internalize specific analogies presented to them. Subsequent lessons take the focus off of the teacher and allow students to be the central part of activities. We will reflect through small group discussions, journaling, and further activities to develop life skills. Health concepts in this lesson/unit: resiliency, coping strategies, decision making, influence analysis, bullying, upstanding behavior, peer pressure, self-esteem, and social connectedness. How to cope with anxiety | Olivia Remes | TEDxUHasselt

15:16
Anxiety is one of most prevalent mental health disorders, with 1 out of 14 people around the world being likely affected. Leading up to conditions such as depression, increased risk for suicide, disability and requirement of high health services, very few people who often need treatment actually receive it. In her talk “How to cope with anxiety”, Olivia Remes of the University of Cambridge will share her vision on anxiety and will unravel ways to treat and manage this health disorder. Arguing that treatments such as psychotherapy and medication exist and often result in poor outcome and high rates of relapses, she will emphasise the importance of harnessing strength in ourselves as we modify our problem-coping mechanisms. Olivia will stress that by allowing ourselves to believe that what happens in life is comprehensive, meaningful, and manageable, one can significantly improve their risk of developing anxiety disorders. How to overcome PTSD triggers! Mental Health with Kati Morton - POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

04:50
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Recovery from PTSD can be hard, but know that it's possible! Today I talk about how to overcome some of the triggers we may encounter after a trauma and/or when we are struggling with PTSD. I was asked below my last video about the WHY. Why do we want to try out these tools or get better? Why would we want to do that? The answer is that we would only want to get better because we hate how it currently is, or it is impairing our ability to function in our everyday life. Onto the real question (listed below) we can overcome these triggers or fears through CBT therapy, seeing a trauma therapist, exposure therapy, and there is also (as always) medication. These are all great ways to better help ourselves cope and overcome triggers we encounter each and every day. xox How does one deal with PTSD and anxiety/fear when the trigger is realistically dangerous? (i.e. Cars terrify me because of a traumatic accident I was in, but cars are in fact dangerous - and I don't know how to rationalize that away to make them 'safe' in my head again) What are your options when your PTSD causes you to be dysfunctional in today's society? My name is Kristen, I am 23 years old, from Sacramento CA, and I have a BA in Psychology from Sacramento State University. I created this channel for three reasons that are very close to my heart. One, to help others be able to tell their stories and be advocates for mental health, to give recovery tips and tricks to help others find the help they need, and to spread awareness for mental health issues to fight the stigma surrounding it. The more we talk about mental illness the more normalized it will be in our society and the more people will not be ashamed to get help! ☆ DISCLAIMER ☆ I am not a professional. Mental Health and Wellness of Florida Lawyers

02:07:56
This program has been approved for 2.0 hours of General CLE Credit including 1.5 hours of Mental Illness Awareness CLE Credit. Recent studies and statistics provide evidence of the problems Florida lawyers are facing. Just a fraction of the available data shows these issues can no longer be the elephant in the room. Lawyers lead the nation with the highest incidence of depression. Lawyers are 3.6 times more likely to suffer from depression than nonlawyers.1 The suicide rate of lawyers is double that of the general population.2 The ABA estimates 18 percent of all U.S. lawyers suffer from problem drinking (which is double the national average).3 Plain and simple, our profession is suffering; too many lawyers are generally unhappy. Within our Florida Bar membership alone (pursuant to the most recent membership survey in 2015): 33 percent believe high stress is a significant challenge within the profession. 32 percent believe balancing family and work is a significant challenge within the profession. 79 percent believe the legal profession is becoming a less desirable career. 36 percent have considered/are considering a different career. 92 percent experience stress. 43 percent experience a great deal of stress. 67 percent report taking two weeks or less of vacation per year. 38 percent report taking one week or less of vacation per year. How Did This Happen? We are a profession of “fixers” and problem solvers, and with that comes an inherent amount of stress and anxiety. We deal with high emotions from our clients and co‐workers. Law is adversarial by nature, and the results of our professional efforts are often beyond our control. Clients rarely, if ever, call us to share a good day; instead, we are generally the first line of defense in dealing with their problems and crises. These elements are further exacerbated by personality traits that dominate our profession, such as our “warrior mentality,” self‐reliance, and perfectionism. Commencing in law school, we are taught to use words and trial skills to frame our arguments and defend our positions. This warrior mentality persists in law firm cultures, which often rewards a win‐at‐all‐costs philosophy. This provides attorneys with the unique ability to deny we have any problems and successfully convince others of the same. We must change this philosophy from the ground up. Attorneys are trained to anticipate everything that can go wrong. This forward‐looking, but often pessimistic, outlook is a component of what our profession deems prudent. In fact, the legal profession is unique in that pessimists out‐perform optimists. However, it’s hard to turn off this pessimistic outlook in our everyday life, and what makes for a good lawyer does not necessarily make for a happy human being. Even worse is that the individualistic nature of our profession seems to cause a reluctance to seek help for depression and mental‐health issues due to concerns of stigma or appearing weak. This is where The Florida Bar comes in. It is time to start tackling these issues head‐on by openly discussing and thinking more holistically about mental illness in the legal profession. The statistical evidence cited above underscores a need for the expansion of attorney‐specific prevention and treatment interventions. Without the right resources, coping strategies, and aid for our physical and mental health, this crisis will not improve. That is why The Florida Bar is focused on giving much‐needed aid to our lawyers. Our speakers will each give a dynamic 15‐20‐minute TED‐style talk on one area of mental or physical health to offer solutions that our members can incorporate into their lives to begin to improve their mental health and wellbeing.
