Now look there are two types of people in this world, those that organize things and the rest of us are just kind of do what they say but if you think you're good with people and you like organizing things maybe human resources could be a career for you. We're here at the Department of Mines to find out what it's all about. You hear the term human resources all the time but it's a pretty obscure and confusing job title. All i know is that it involves dealing with lots of people which is why I'm here at one of the biggest people machines in WA, the Department of Mines and Petroleum to find out exactly what a human resources officer does. Great to meet you Alyce. Well let's start with everything, I need to know if you're working in Human Resources what do you do? So pretty much we work with the employees right through from application to retirement and that could be anything from looking after their safety to training to providing wellness programs or diversity events. So you follow someone's career basically from the beginning right through the end. Yeah while they're in that specific organization. Sure and ok well let's start at the beginning how you came to be in the job. What was your particular path? Where did you study how are you here today? I studied the ECU I studied a bachelor of business and I did a major in human resource management and from that I engaged in lots of different work experience, internship placements I put my name on the templates here at this department and they asked me to come back and work on my initial project. Okay, talk me through a day a typical day of yours when you turn up what do you get up to? First thing I do is look at my emails to make sure there's no employees that are concerned about any issues. That's the first thing you need to get to you need to reply to them quickly. I also because I'm the wellness coordinator I do a lot of events and presentations so i might be one day I might be booking in a presentation I'm checking that staff have RSVP'd properly that kind of thing. We also organize occupational safety and health inductions for new staff so i might be sending out invites. Okay, it's time for you to give us the edge. Can you do that? Absolutely question number one, just quickly from school to what you do now what's the process? Definitely finish high school and an excellent way to increase your opportunities then enroll in either a human resource management course at there's a number of different institutions that offer it or you could do a degree in business and get a a major in human resources or even a psychology degree. Question 2 if I want to be really successful in human resources what characteristics do i need? Definitely a good people person, you need to love working with people, also excellent communication skills that's a big one you need to always be talking with people and also being able to say the same thing to everybody being consistent with your advice to give throughout the organization. And question number three, if you could have done one thing differently but still end up exactly where you are today what would you have done there? Good question i'm quite happy with the path I took but I will say definitely being a little bit more comfortable about asking questions and seeking advice. Pam Gunnell, SPHR, is an experienced HR practitioner with over 25 years experience. She began her HR career with Morton, before the automotive safety division was sold to Autoliv. Her path progressed from file clerk to Office Manager to HR Generalist to Production Supervisor to HR Manager to Corporate Benefits Manager/Director. After more than a dozen years in the automotive industry, Pam owns Gunnell HR Consulting, Inc. and has worked in the bio-tech, consulting, accounting banking, health care, mining and engineering industries. Her clients include Utah SHRM, Mountain America Credit Union, Hume 'n Resources, Sun Healthcare, What's Working Well, TopVue, Department of Workforce Services, WestHost, and more. One of her favorite clients was Rio Tinto. After almost a year of coaxing, she became a full-time employee for them and did global HR project and implementation work for them for over 6 years. Pam is currently the Regional HR Manager for IMDS. Pam is a true blooded Aggie; a former Aggiette who later earned her MBA. Her husband, two daughters, her father, two brothers and a sister are all alumni. Her great grandfather also attended USU, although it would have been in the late 1800's or early 1900's when Grandfather Romero attended classes at what was then called the Agricultural College of Utah. Mark James is Honeywell's senior vice president of human resources and communications, a position he was appointed to in November 2007. Honeywell is a $37 billion diversified technology and manufacturing company serving customers in aerospace, automation control, automotive and chemical industries. A member of Honeywell's senior leadership team, he is responsible for leading global human resources strategy and programs for the company's 120,000 employees in more than 100 countries. This includes organization and talent development, staffing, learning, compensation and benefits, labor and employee relations, HR services and the Six Sigma training organization. His role also includes leading the company's procurement, communications and aviation functions. Prior to this position, Mr. James was vice president of human resources and communications for Honeywell Aerospace, a position he held since October 2004, leading HR strategies for the $12 billion business and its more than 40,000 employees. He joined Honeywell in February 2000 as director of human resources for federal manufacturing & technologies in Kansas City and was promoted in March 2001 to vice president of human resources for aerospace electronic systems in Phoenix. Prior to Honeywell, Mr. James held a variety of human resources positions with Iomega, JM Family Enterprises (Toyota distributor), AT&T and Lockheed Martin. Mr. James holds a master's degree from the University of Utah in public administration with an emphasis in human resources, and a business administration degree in personnel and industrial relations from Utah State University. But before we can navigate how to properly resolve conflict we have to understand why they arise in the first place. So, what creates conflict in the workplace? • Opposing Positions • Power Struggles • Ego • Pride • Jealousy • Performance Discrepancies • Compensation Issues or • Just someone having a bad day But the reality is that the root of most employee conflict is either born out of poor communication or the inability to control one's emotions. Countless times otherwise smart capable people place the need for emotional superiority ahead of achieving the collective company mission. Mediating employee conflict effectively can be done! But don't worry, in this video we will share some guidelines to keep in mind when you resolve conflict. Employee Conflict Resolution can be tricky so follow these steps. First - Talk to each employee conflict participant privately to piece together a story. When talking to each person involved, keep an objective but concerned tone. Do not agree or disagree, just listen. This is key to mediating employee conflict Second - Research each version of events and then write down the employee conflict or disagreement in a few sentences, what caused it and a possible solution for the problem. This is the second step in conflict resolution which will lead to mediating employee conflict successfully Third -Meet with the main employees involved in the conflict together in a private room. Keep a cordial and optimistic tone from the very beginning of the meeting and request the same from each person. Fourth - Objectively recite the conflict back to participants, telling both sides how you understand it. Verify with each person that what you've said is accurate. Allow each person to add or correct any details and propose solutions. Fifth - Reach a final solution based on participants' proposed solutions and ones you've come up with as the objective party. Employee Conflict Resolution is key to keeping up morale Lastly - Log the conflict--both sides of the story--and resolution into a document. Print out a copy for each party to the employee conflict and have them sign a master copy to verify the information is correct. File the document with human resources for future reference if the conflict ever arises again. This can ensure that mediating employee conflict does not need to repeat itself. Remember the worst thing you can do is avoid the conflict, hoping it will go away. This, too, shall pass, is not an option - EVER. Learning effective conflict resolution is your best option.
