Presentation by Dr Rob Gill, Wednesday 15 November 2017 Abstract: There has been much published text on the role of reputation management and branding through public relations, yet one area overlooked in terms of academic investigation is the role of perception in reputation management. As previously stated in academic texts (see for example Doorley and Garcia, 2015; Dowling, 2006; Gotsi and Wilson, 2001; Beder, 2002) brand is defined as how an organisation represents itself to the stakeholders and public, and reputation is how the stakeholders and public believe that organisation performs against its brand. Yet the role of managing public and stakeholder perceptions appears not to be given due recognition in the process of reputation management. In essence, how an organisation is perceived by its stakeholders defines its reputation and trust. How an organisation would like to be perceived defines its brand (Doorley and Garcia, 2015). But how does public relations influence these perceptions? This paper explores literature on branding, reputation and perception with the intent of establishing a common definition of perception in terms of professional communication practice. It also aims to highlight the role perception has in shaping organisational reputation, and establish some critical strategies to ensure good perception management practices. The authors believe that perception has identifiable links with the psychology discipline, yet in practical terms perception management plays a significant role in public relations practice. Project ''PR tools for a good reputation'' training course took place in the Autumn '16 in Minsk region, Belarus. Overall aim of the project was to discover the Public Relations sphere, to learn the process of building communication between NGO and its target groups in order to build up a positive image and reputation of an organisation and to find out the most effective ways for promotion of NGOs and their activities. The project was developed for youth NGOs’ workers and activists in order to equip them with the practical PR tools that they can use for their organisation if there is no possibility to employ a PR-specialist. The training course helped the participants to understand and learn deeper Public Relations and provided space to exchange experience in this field.

Using lessons pulled from professional public relations specialists combined practical experience in operations and security incident response we’ll review the five keys to good crisis communications. We’ll walk through multiple examples of good and bad crisis communications and develop an understanding of what information people need to know when and why they should get it from you and not the media. When your organisation is touched by a disaster or other bad news, you’ll find yourself in the media spotlight. Handle it well and you could enhance your reputation. Handle it badly - and it could destroy the organisation. This video introduces a practical workshop that will show you how to get it right - a one-day introduction to representing your organisation in the media in the event of a disaster, emergency or other bad news. The day starts with sessions on what news is and how journalists work. We then look at the specific stories delegates bring, and suggest the best media strategies. Delegates then have preparation time, followed by realistic role-play news interviews in the styles of newspapers, radio and TV. These are conducted by an experienced reporter and filmed by a news camera operator with full broadcast kit. We then play back and analyse the interviews in a supportive group environment. This book offers, for the first time, a framework that integrates these various functions and gives corporate diplomats tools to increase their effectiveness and status within their companies. These tools are as follows: Due Diligence. Corporate diplomacy begins with a deep analysis of stakeholders and what they want. Absent that, managers are left with little more than guesses. Just as an oil field or gold mine begins with an analysis of geological and engineering studies, so must corporate diplomacy rest upon a foundation of stakeholder analysis. A smart manager or team must identify the stakeholders (that is, outsiders who have a financial interest in the project or who care about it for political or ideological reasons), the resources they control, and the reasons the project matters to them. This information can come from traditional sources, such as surveys, or social media monitoring. These data are the foundation for a stakeholder engagement plan. Integration. Stakeholder data must be integrated into a firm’s broader business. A corporate diplomat has to secure the buy-in from colleagues in departments such as finance and marketing. An engagement effort will likely fail if, say, your CFO thinks it is a waste of money Personal. Corporate diplomacy reaches beyond the technical, calculating and analytical to incorporate interpersonal skills. A financial settlement can fail not only because it is cheap but also if it is offered grudgingly. Stakeholders should perceive a firm’s actions as having resulted from a transparent process in which everyone, both the powerful and the powerless, had a voice. They should see a firm that respects everyone’s views, rather than just ruthlessly chasing its own interests. Pat Ford recommends the best book on leadership to young professionals. Ford became Burson-Marsteller’s vice chairman and chief client officer in 2012, following six years of driving extraordinary growth in North America as Burson’s regional president and CEO. He also served as chair of the firm’s Asia-Pacific region for nearly three years (2012-2015). Mr. Ford specializes in corporate reputation management, senior executive communications, media strategy, and issues and crisis management. His clients over 26 years at Burson-Marsteller have ranged from world-class companies in industries as diverse as automotive, energy, express delivery services, financial services, food and beverage, management consulting, technology, and telecommunications, and also government clients in the U.S. and Asia. Before joining Burson-Marsteller, he served as vice president for external affairs at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, one of America’s leading policy think tanks, in Washington, DC, following a brief career as a journalist. Mr. Ford serves on the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Public Relations, an international organization that supports PR research and education, and the Board of Directors of The LAGRANT Foundation, whose mission is to increase the number of ethnic minorities in the fields of advertising, marketing and public relations. He also is a member of the Advisory Board of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University. In 2014, he received the prestigious Milestones in Mentoring Legacy Award from the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations at the University of Alabama.
