INTRODUCTION: U.S has sent two. B-1B bombers in South China Sea escorted by American and South Korean jet fighter. The ‘Freedom of Navigation’ exercise included practicing attack capabilities at a training range. In this video, Defense Updates analyzes the capabilities of B1B and explains why China should be afraid of it? Lets get started. BACKGROUND: China has a long history of maritime disputes with its South China Sea neighbors. It claims almost all of the South China Sea, including islands more than 800 miles (~1300 km) from the Chinese mainland, despite objections from its neighbors. Beijing has also created artificial islands in the area, outfitting some of them with military features. According to the US, China has reclaimed more than 3,000 acres in the Spratly Islands since 2014. China’s sweeping claims of sovereignty over the sea have provoked competing claimants Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Non-claimants like USA, India, Australia & Japan want the South China Sea to remain as international waters with freedom of navigation, whereas China want to control this major trade way .It is a very important sea route with 5 trillion $ in trade, half of global merchant shipping and 1/2 of world’s oil shipment pass through it. The sea also has alleged 11 billion barrels of untapped oil and 190 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. B1B CONCEPT The B-1 Lancer is a supersonic variable-sweep wing, heavy bomber used by the United States Air Force (USAF). It is commonly called the "Bone". It is one of three strategic bombers in the USAF fleet as of 2017, the other two being the B-2 Spirit "Stealth Bomber", and the B-52 Stratofortress. U.S has 100 of these. NEED The B-1A was originally designed during the 1970s as a high-altitude, Mach 2.0-capable nuclear bomber. However, President Jimmy Carter cancelled the program on June 30, 1977, in favor of air launched cruise missiles carried onboard the B-52, intercontinental ballistic missiles and what eventually became the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. This was done after it became apparent that penetrating Soviet airspace at high altitudes in a conventional non-stealthy aircraft was likely a suicidal endeavor. President Ronald Reagan eventually revived the Lancer program on Oct. 2, 1981, however the new B-1B was optimized for low-level penetration. Additionally, the aircraft was modified with new engine air intakes and other upgrades to reduce its radar cross-section. The resultant B-1B aircraft no longer possessed Mach 2 capability—topping out at roughly Mach 1.25—but had much better survivability because of stealthier profile. WING SWEEP SYSTEM Most airplane wing designs are tradeoffs. Wings are set for low speed stability or high-speed performance, or some middle point. But even with flap systems and leading edge slats, fixed wings are compromises. A multi-role aircraft needs more flexibility. Having variability in the wing configuration has huge advantages in making a single aircraft adept at multiple missions. RANGE / SERVCE CEILING /PAYLOAD B1B has an excellent range of Range: 5,900 mi or 9,400 km. It has a Service ceiling of 60,000 ft. B1B has a massive payload of 125,000 lb (56,700 kg) internal and external ordnance combined. It has 6 external hardpoints for 50,000 pounds (23,000 kg) of ordnance and 3 internal bomb bays for 75,000 pounds (34,000 kg) of ordnance. Depending on mission the ammunition can consists of following: 84× Mk-82 Air inflatable retarder (AIR) general purpose (GP) bombs 81× Mk-82 low drag general purpose (LDGP) bombs 84× Mk-62 Quickstrike sea mines 24× Mk-84 general-purpose bombs 24× Mk-65 naval mines 30× CBU-87/89/CBU-97 Cluster Bomb Units (CBU) 30× CBU-103/104/105 Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser (WCMD) 24× GBU-31 JDAM GPS guided bombs (Mk-84 GP or BLU-109 warhead) 15× GBU-38 JDAM GPS guided bombs (Mk-82 GP warhead) 48× GBU-38 JDAM (using rotary launcher mounted multiple ejector racks) 48× GBU-54 Laser JDAM (using rotary launcher mounted multiple ejector racks) 96× or 144× GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb GPS guided bombs 24× AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) 24× AGM-158 Joint Air to Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) CONCLUSION Earlier James Mattis, on a two-day visit to Japan, affirmed that Senkakus islands in South China Sea, which are controlled by Japan but also claimed by China, fell within the scope of the Japan-US security treaty, under which Washington is obliged to defend all areas under Japanese administrative control. US has also signed an important agreement with India. The Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA) between US & India allows them to use each other's land, air and naval bases for repair and resupply. US, Japan and Indian are participating in Malabar naval exercise with eye on China. It is clear from the developments that China is increasing getting isolated due to its aggressive posturing.

In this video, I show how you can calculate your vital capacity (the maximum air you can breathe in one breath). First you would measure your "expected" vital capacity for your height and weight using a couple formulas. Then you would measure your "actual" vital capacity by breathing into a balloon and measuring the balloon's diameter. Lastly, you would measure how well you meet your Expected Vital Capacity by calculating the percentage. Over 80% is considered normal. I use this lab when teaching the Scientific Method to my students. I have them test whether or not athletes will have a higher vital capacity compared to non-athletes, and then we graph our results on a bar chart. Surprisingly, many of my students were between the 60 - 80% range which is not considered normal; this could mean they weren't doing the calculations right or perhaps because they need to exercise more. :) Even one of the football player's vital capacity was in the high 60's. I did find that the students who were at 100% vital capacity ran on a regular basis. I run 2 miles a day and my vital capacity was normal (83%). SURYA , (meaning the Sun in Sanskrit and many Indian languages) is the codename for one of the Intercontinental ballistic missiles that India is reported to be developing, is a three stage designed ICBM, first two stages using solid propellants and the third-stage using liquid, it is road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missile Is underdevelopment phase by india’s defense research and organistaion (DRDO). first report about the Surya missile was published by The Nonproliferation Review in 1995, albeit the status remains unconfirmed as of 2012. with some report indicating that the development of this system was initiated in 1994, Conflicting reports regarding the Surya's configuration claim that it will be based on the components of the polar space launch vehicle (PSLV) and the Agni IRBM. It has a length of 40 m and a diameter of 1.1 m. It weighs in at 85,000 kilograms and it has an estimated range of 12,000 to 16,000 kilometers. This would make the SURYA the world's longest range missile, surpassing the range of the Chinese DF-41 which has a reported range of 15,000 km. It is believed to have a top speed of Mach 25 or 30625 km per hour, and to be capable of M I R V (Thermo neuclear) delivery (up to 10) around 250 kilo ton. WHY IT IS IMPORTANT for india TO DEVELOPE a ICBM. India’s strategic community and the military have been clamouring for decades that to have bullet-proof security, India needs an ICBM that can reach every major country on the planet; that is, a missile with a range of at least 12,000 kilometre. Now there are many people on the other side of the debate who question whether ICBMs are such a big deal. Their reasoning is that India’s furthest rival is China so there’s no need for a missile that travels further than that country. Plus, they argue, the US and Europe aren’t inimical to India so why provoke their ire by developing missiles that could potentially target these benign fellows? Such thinking ignores a basic precept of defence – a nation must forever wage peace but keep its powder dry. ICBMs are strategic weapons and without a global-range missile, India will be unable to break out of its regional context. It’s as simple as that. The ICBM is the doomsday weapon that separates the men from the boys in the global slugfest. While it is true that economic strength plays a key role in shaping international power equations, strategic missiles alone can guarantee fail-safe national security. As the Federation of American Scientists says, “Regardless of the origin of a conflict, a country may involve the entire world simply by threatening to spread the war with an ICBM.” The supposedly horrendous cost of building and maintaining ICBMs is also touted as a reason why nations should avoid them. However, for decades China has strutted on the global stage on the strength of just 20 silo-based ICBMs. Today, of course, it has nuclear armed submarines and road mobile ICBMs, but those 20 venerable missiles have given it strategic parity with the US and Russia who both possess hundreds of missiles. Clearly, strategic missiles are one reason (the other being the permanent seat at the U N Security Council) why regional chipmunks like France and Britain continue to talk big whereas Germany and Japan despite their massive economies remain fringe players. Without a credible ICBM force, India will be looked upon as nothing more than a subcontinental bully – a country that aspires to play hardball with the giants but ends up relegated to the minor league.

The royal British Armed Forces are building a new and improved torpedo for the Royal British Navy to boost their power and will be a great torpedo for NATO members. The Spearfish torpedo (formally Naval Staff Target 7525) is the heavy torpedo used by the submarines of the Royal Navy. It can be guided by wire or by autonomous active or passive sonar, and provides both anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface ship warfare (ASuW) capability. It replaced the unreliable Tigerfish torpedo, which was withdrawn in 2004; the significantly higher speed of the Spearfish, for which development started in the 1970s, before the breakup of the Soviet Union, was intended to catch high-speed, deep-diving Soviet threats such as the Alfa-class submarine. The addition of an oxidiser improves the specific energy of the fuel by reducing the fuel-richness of the Otto fuel. A microprocessor enables the torpedo to make autonomous tactical decisions during the attack. It has a powerful blast warhead, triggered by either contact detonation (against a submarine hull) or an acoustic proximity fuze (for under-keel detonation against ships). A standoff detonation under the keel enhances blast effects against surface ships through the amplification of stress resulting from the interaction of the explosion's products and the flexible structure of the ship. This can be seen in SINKEX video footage. Guidance In a typical engagement, Spearfish will run out wired-guided to the general vicinity of the target and then conduct a covert passive search. The high-capacity guide wire system, specifically design to match the Spearfish's manoeuvre and speed envelope, provides two-way data exchange between the torpedo and launch submarine, maximising the submarine's organic sensor and combat control capabilities. Once at close range the Spearfish uses active sonar to classify and home in on its target. High power transmissions and sophisticated signal processing enable Spearfish to accurately discriminate targets from background noise and ensure high resistance to acoustic countermeasures and/or evasive manoeuvres. Should Spearfish fail to hit the target on its first attack, it automatically selects an appropriate re-attack mode until it successfully concludes the engagement. Testing Tactical software has been extensively refined through real-time, hardware in the loop simulations and demonstrated in over 500 in-water trials and exercise firings. Production The production contract for the Spearfish Torpedo was placed with GEC-Marconi Underwater Systems Ltd (now BAE Systems) in 1983, following a development programme lasting for several years. Deployment Spearfish entered full production in 1988, with deliveries completed in 2003; the number ordered has not been revealed. Spearfish torpedoes are stored and serviced at Beith Ordnance Storage facility in North Ayrshire. Upgrade In 2009, an upgrade program began, leading to further sophisticated advances in Spearfish's homing, warheads, tactical and fuelling systems, as well an upgraded guidance link. This will last until 2019. On 15 December 2014, the Ministry of Defence awarded BAE Systems a £270 million contract to upgrade the Spearfish torpedo. The upgrade includes a new warhead, a change to the fuel system to improve safety, full digitisation of the weapon and a new fibre optic guidance link to improve performance. The Royal Navy (RN) is the United Kingdom's principal naval warfare force. Tracing its origins to the 16th century, it is the oldest service and is known as the Senior Service. Failed Rocket Launch in 1957. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanguard_TV3 Vanguard TV3, also called Vanguard Test Vehicle Three was the first attempt of the United States to launch a satellite into orbit around the Earth. Vanguard 1A was a small satellite designed to test the launch capabilities of the three-stage Vanguard and study the effects of the environment on a satellite and its systems in Earth orbit. It was also to be used to obtain geodetic measurements through orbit analysis. Solar cells on Vanguard 1A were manufactured by Bell Laboratories. At its launch attempt on December 6, 1957, at Cape Canaveral, the booster ignited and began to rise, but about two seconds after liftoff, after rising about four feet (1.2 m), the rocket lost thrust and fell back to the launch pad. As it settled the fuel tanks ruptured and exploded, destroying the rocket and severely damaging the launch pad. The Vanguard satellite was thrown clear and landed on the ground a short distance away with its transmitters still sending out a beacon signal. The satellite was damaged, however, and could not be reused. It is now on display at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution. The exact cause of the accident was not determined with certainty, but it appeared that the fuel system malfunctioned. Other engines of the same model were modified and did not fail. The history of the Vanguard TV3 project dates back to the International Geophysical Year (IGY). This was an enthusiastic international undertaking that united scientists globally to conduct planet-wide geophysical studies. The IGY guaranteed free exchange of information acquired through scientific observation which led to many important discoveries in the future. Orbiting a satellite became one of the main goals of the IGY. As early as July 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower announced, through his press secretary, that the United States would launch "small, unmanned, earth-circling satellites as part of the U.S. participation in the I.G.Y."  On September 9, 1955, the United States Department of Defense wrote a letter to the secretary of the Navy authorizing the mission to proceed. The US Navy had been assigned the task of launching Vanguard satellites as part of the program. Project Vanguard had officially begun. The payload of the TV3 was very similar to the later Vanguard 1. It was a small aluminium sphere, 15.2 cm in diameter and with a mass of 1.36 kg. It carried two transmitters: a 10-mW, 108-MHz transmitter powered by a mercury battery, and a 5-mW, 108.03-MHz transmitter powered by six solar cells mounted on the body of the spacecraft. Using six small aerial antennae mounted on its body, the satellite primarily transmitted engineering and telemetry data, but the transmitters were also used to determine the total electron content between the satellite and the ground stations. Other instruments in the satellite's design included two thermistors, which were used to measure the satellite's internal temperatures for the purpose of tracking its thermal protection's effectiveness. Although the satellite was damaged beyond reuse capability during the crash, it was still transmitting after the incident.

Defense Flash News : U.S. Air Force F-22 to Fire New Weapons - Upgraded AIM-9X Missile The F-22 upgrade allows full functionality for the AIM-120D and AIM-9X Air-to-Air missiles as well as enhanced Air-to-Surface target location capabilities. The Air Force is in the early phases of designing new sensors for its stealthy 5th-generation F-22 Raptor as it proceeds with software upgrades, hardware adjustments, new antennas and data link improvements designed to better enable to connect the F-22 and F-35 sensor packages to one another, industry officials explained. Sensor interoperability, two-way data links and other kinds of technical integration between the two 5th-Gen stealth aircraft are considered key to an Air Force combat strategy which intends for the F-22 speed and air-to-air combat supremacy to complement and work in tandem with the F-35's next-gen sensors, precision-attack technology, computers and multi-role fighting mission ability. "The F-22 is designed to fly in concert with F-35. Software Update 6 for the F-22 will give the Air Force a chance to link their sensor packages together. Sensors are a key component to its capability. As the F-22 gets its new weapons on board – you are going to need to upgrade the sensors to use the new weapons capability," John Cottam, F-22 Program Deputy, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, told Scout Warrior in an interview. While the F-35 is engineered with dog-fighting abilities, its advanced sensor technology is intended to recognize enemy threats at much further distances - enabling earlier, longer-range attacks to destroy enemies in the air. Once a safe air corridor is established for further attacks, an F-22 could maintain or ensure continued air supremacy while an F-35 conducted close-air-support ground attacks or pursued ISR missions with its drone-like video-surveillance technology. Paper used in the printing industry generally contains a relatively thin porous coating covering a thicker fibrous base layer. The three-dimensional pore structure of coatings has a major effect on fluid flow patterns inside the paper medium. Understanding and quantifying the flow properties of thin coating layers is hence crucial. Pore spaces within the coating have an average size of about 180 nm. We used scanning electron microscopy combined with focused ion beam (FIB-SEM) to visualize the nano-scale pore structure of the paper coating layer. Post-processing of the FIB-SEM images allowed us to reconstruct the three-dimensional pore space of the coating. The 3D FIB-SEM images were analyzed in detail to obtain pore size distribution and porosity value. The permeability was estimated using the GeoDict software, based on solutions of the Stokes equation. By determining the porosity and permeability of increasingly larger domain sizes, we estimated the size of a representative elementary volume (REV) for the coating layer to be 60 µm3, which is well within the volume analyzed using FIB-SEM. The estimated porosity and permeability of the REV domain were 0.34 and 0.09 mDarcy, respectively. Using the pore morphology method, capillary pressure-saturation (Pc-S) and relative permeability curves of the REV domain could be constructed next. The Pc-S curves showed that the coating had a high air entry suction, which is very favorable for printing in that ink will invade the coating as soon as it is applied to the coating. Our results are essential for macroscale modelling of ink penetration into a coating layer during inkjet printing. Macroscopic models can be valuable tools for optimization of the penetration depth and the spreading of ink on and within paper substrates. With a Bolt Tensioner (SSV), bolts are axially preloaded without torquing using high-pressure hydraulic. Axial tension force has been attained by using SCHAAF SSV for bolts with a thread diameter from 8 mm to over 800 mm. SCHAAF Bolt Tensioners are distinguished into eight different product groups (PG) (designs) which, in principle, all have the same function. BOLT TENSIONER (SSV) PG 3 The distinguishing feature of the Bolt Tensioners of product group 3 is that the cylinder-piston-set is placed over a bolt thread and that, then, an immersion nut (puller) which immerses into the Bolt Tensioner is screwed down to the stop face of the piston. Main features • Single-stage • Flush nut • For continuous or recessed bolt threads Advantages • Can be used for other thread sizes, by replacing components which depend on thread size • Short thread overhang of bolt • SSV is simple to place, thus short set-up times • Easy handling because of low weight of flush nut Conditions • Larger outer diameter for same technical data as PG 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 • Difficult handling for thread dimensions larger than 100 mm (4 inch), for overhead mounting Examples of application • When different screw sizes on a complete system have to be pre-tensioned using the same SSV • Universally applicable FUNCTION OF A BOLT TENSIONER (SSV) PG 3 IN SIMPLIFIED RESPRESENTATION Basic position Place the SSV onto the bolt to be tensioned and screw the thread sleeve down to the piston surface. A hydraulic high-pressure pump, through a flexible hose, feeds oil into the space between cylinder and piston. The hydraulic pressure increases. Elongation and compression As the hydraulic pressure increases, the resulting axial force elongates the bolt and compresses the flanges. Thus, the main nut lifts from the flange. On reaching the desired tension, pressurizing is stopped. Positioning of the main nut The tensioning force is achieved and the main nut can be turned down to contact the flange. When releasing the oil pressure, the desired tensioning force remains in the bolt connection. After removing the SSV, you may use the equipment for tensioning other bolts. Bolt Tensioners can be removed from the bolt connection after pre-tensioning. Defense UPDATES SEQUENCE 1 Air forces of India, Russia participate in 'Exercise Aviaindra' Air forces of India and Russia are participating in a 12-day drill 'Exercise Aviaindra' which focuses on anti-terrorist operations in a bilateral scenario, the Indian Air Force said Wednesday in a statement.Aviaindra is being conducted at Lipetsk, Russia, from September 17 to 28.In its second leg, it will be conducted in Jodhpur from December 10 to 22, the statement said.The Indian contingent comprises 30 officers from different branches and streams of the IAF. All systems functioned normally. The mission achieved a copybook success,” said a defence official. Equipped with state of the art navigation, guidance and electromechanical actuation systems with the latest onboard computer, the missile achieved the terminal accuracy of fewer than 10 meters. It went up vertically and then manoeuvred as coordinated. “The missile was launched from a road-mobile launcher, which can carry six missiles at a time and can be fired in salvo mode in all directions covering the entire azimuth plane. There was not a single degree deviation during the entire flight path,” the official told The New Indian Express. Having a strike range of 150 km, Prahaar has no parallel in the world in its range category. It fills the vital gap between multi-barrel rocket Pinaka and medium-range ballistic missile Prithvi. Unlike Prithvi, it can engage multiple targets in different directions. The missile capable of carrying different types of warheads will operate as battlefield support system to the Indian Army. It has a greater manoeuvring capability, acceleration and can be deployed in different kinds of terrain making it more effective against strategic targets. The weapon has sophisticated inertial navigation and electro-mechanical actuation system. It can be transported to anywhere within a short span of time. It was the second test of the missile, which was first tested on July 21, 2011. It will be indicted in the army after few more tests, the official said. Fuelled by solid propellant Prahaar missile is about 7.32 meter long and its diameter is 420 mm. While its launch weight is about 1.28 tonne, it can carry a payload of 200 kg.
