Diamonds Have Transformed Botswana For the Better

But in Botswana, it’'s a different story. The diamond has transformed Botswana from one of the poorest countries in the world, to one of the most prosperous and stable countries in Africa. An inspiring initiative has seen Botswana’'s vast diamond reserves, worth about three billion US dollars a year, being used to share wealth throughout the nation. Trade Consultant Ntetleng Masisi says “they used diamonds to bring about health facilities, education and a markedly improved quality of life. "The earnings from our exports of diamonds have really done a lot for us.”" But Botswana’'s reliance on diamond revenue means that the whole of the country’'s future is now in the hands of the diamond dealers…. Blood Diamonds and Religious War: Diamonds and Division

The Central African Republic is one of the poorest countries in the world, but it is also rich in natural resources. One of the official mining sectors has collapsed amid the country’s ongoing conflict, and now both sides are benefitting from the illicit trade of gold and diamonds. Clashes over control of the many mines have also created religious tension in places where there previously had been none. VICE News traveled to mines located in the heart of the Central African Republic to see how the battle over natural resources is playing out in one of the world’s most violent conflicts. Most EXPENSIVE Diamonds In The World!

The Heart of Eternity ($16 million) The stone that was made into the heart of Eternity Diamond was found at the world’s largest supplier of blue diamonds, the South African Premier Diamond Mine. Blue diamonds are incredibly rare with, on average, only one being found every year, and this one was an amazing find. The rough stone was 777 carats when it was dug up, and the owners waited until they had the perfect design idea before they started cutting it. The result was The Millenium Blue Diamonds- a series of heart, pear drop and oval shaped diamonds of which the Heart Of Eternity is the largest. In recent years it has been on tour at various exhibitions, including at the Millennium exhibition in London in 2000, followed by the Smithsonian museum. It was reportedly bought in 2012 by Floyd Mayweather to give to his fiancée, but no details of the selling price were ever revealed. The $16 million price tag is an estimate based on its size and color, but the finished piece could be worth far more when you consider what a rare piece it is. 9. The Moussaieff Red Diamond ($20 million) Diamonds come in many colors, but red ones are particularly rare. According to the Cape Town Diamond Museum there have only been up to 30 true red diamonds ever found, with most of them being less than half a carat. A farmer in Brazil found the rough stone that was to become the Moussaieff Red Diamond in the 90’s. At a weight of 13.90 carats it immediately became the center of attention. The William Goldberg Diamond Corporation from New York then bought it, and decided to cut it into a triangular brilliant cut. This process would mean losing 8.79 carats, but the resulting cranberry colored 5.11 carat gem is simply stunning. It was originally named the Red Shield, but was renamed by the Moussaieff Jewelers when they purchased it for about $8 million at the turn of the century. This diamond has regularly been to exhibitions, being shown alongside other ones in the Smithsonian. Were it to be sold, it would be expected to cost at least $20 million. 8. The Perfect Pink ($23 million) When it sold for $23 million in 2010, the Perfect Pink Diamond was the most expensive jewel that had ever been sold in Asia. It weighs 14.23 carats, is graded as fancy intense pink, and is set in a rose and white gold ring with rectangular shaped diamonds on either side. Pure Pink diamonds of more than 10 carats are very unusual, with only 18 examples having gone to auction in the past 244 years; none of which was classified as intense pink at the time of sale. This makes the Perfect Pink a truly unique piece, and explains why it sold for ten million dollars more than had been expected. 7. The Wittelsbach Diamond ($23.4 million) The first records of the Wittelsbach Diamond come from back in the 17th century when it was sold to Louis XIV of France. It has a rare blue color, and weighs 35.56 carats. The stone has a royal history, having been passed down through families since the 1600’s. It went from France, to Spain, and over to Germany, where it accompanied the German King Louis III to his burial place in 1921. At some point in the 30’s it was sold to raise money for the German government, and from here things get mysterious. No one seemed to know who had bought it, and it somehow got replaced with a piece of blue glas in the museum. Rumors of the actual diamond changing hands were rife in the following decades, until 1962 when it reappeared at a jewelery store in Belgium. It was sold in 2008 for $23.4 million and, to the dismay of diamond historians, the new owner decided that it should be recut, since it had originally been done in the early 1600’s. The resulting stone, now 21.06 carats, meant that both the color and quality were improved, and the estimated price sky-rocketed.

Pink Star The Pink Star is the largest diamond in the world to be declared as Fancy Vivid Pink by the Gemological Institute of America. The Pink Star was owned by the Geneva-based Steinmetz Diamond Group, who happily presented the 59.60 carat diamond to the world via a showing in Monaco in 2003. 7. The Wittelsbach Graff Diamond This particular diamond has a bit of controversy surrounding it due to what happened when it was bought at an auction. The Wittelsbach Graff Diamond was bought by the legendary Sir Graff himself, who got the diamond for a little under $25 million dollars. You know, Peanuts!! 6. The Graff Pink Diamond Pink diamonds are one of the most valuable diamonds in the world today, and one of the most valued ones ever is the Graff Pink Diamond. The diamond was once owned by Harry Winston himself, who actually kept the diamond for over 60 years. The 24.78 carat diamond was indeed special, but it would eventually change hands by 2010. 5. Oppenheimer Blue Diamond Colored diamonds are some of the most rare and valuable ones on the market, but few are as treasured and rare as the Oppenheimer Blue Diamond. Not unlike many others, it's the color that helps make this diamond special, as it's a pure blue that is just not found in nature very often. Now, as for its owner, it used to be owned by one Sir Philip Oppenheimer, hence how the stone got its name. When you’re that awesome, you get diamonds named after you!! 4. De Beers Centenary Diamond The De Beers Centenary Diamond breaks the 9-digit value mark, as it's been appraised at $100 million dollars. This easily makes it one of the most valuable diamonds in the history of the world. But just as fascinating is the history of the diamond itself. 3. Hope Diamond The legendary Hope Diamond is legendary for numerous reasons. First and foremost, it's an incredibly valuable diamond, specifically, this is a blue diamond, measured to be 45.52 carats. Guess what it's worth!! Go ahead...guess!! It's worth approximately 350 million dollars. 2. The Cullinan The Cullinan has the honor of being the biggest rough diamond ever discovered in the world. Even bigger the De Beers Centenary Diamond. It was in a South African mine in 1905, one that happened to be owned by diamond magnate Sir Thomas Cullinan. Once again, hence the name. 1. Koh-I-Noor Diamond The Koh-I-Noor is not only one of the most valuable diamonds in the world, it's arguably the most controversial. As it was given to England under controversial circumstances, then placed as the headpiece of the literal Crown to the Queen. Because of these factors, there's only guesses as to how much the Koh-I-Noor is actually worth. Some view it as priceless, others view it at around $200 million, and others view it as high as 1 billion dollars.

Top 10 Countries With The LARGEST Gold Reserves!

India According to the World Gold Council, the Bank of India currently holds 557.7 tons of gold. It is one of the largest stores of gold in the world! This makes up 9.9 % of the country’s total foreign reserve. Foreign exchange reserves is money or other assets held by a nation’s central bank so they can back the national currency. India, home to 1.25 billion people, is the number one largest consumer of the precious metal. Furthermore, India is one of the most reliable drivers of global demand. For example, India’s festival and wedding season, which runs from October to December, has historically been a major market for gold. And probably, one of the most interesting facts about India and gold is that India rarely invests much in gold. This is because as a country, India operates under the belief that buying gold leads to a deficit. And their belief must be proving right as things also seem to be improving for India. For instance, if you look at the last few years, India has increased its gold reserves from 557.74 to 557.77. While this might not seem like a lot, India is also at its highest point in history! In addition to what the country holds, Indian households which are considered the world’s largest hoarders of gold, hold a record 23,000-24,000 tons, which is worth about $800 billion. 9.) Netherlands In the past few years, the Netherlands has held 52% of its foreign reserve in gold. The Netherlands has a reported 612.45 tons. In 2016 it was reported that the bank was looking for a place to store all its gold because they were going to renovate the vaults and needed to moving it. The Dutch central bank is planning to move the country’s gold reserves from the center of Amsterdam to a new complex called the Cash Center. Like most countries, Dutch gold is also held in banks around the world to reduce risk. Security measures to guard the gold 24/7 have become a problem in Amsterdam. 189,000 kilos of gold will be moved at the beginning of 2022. Maybe this is one reason that over the last decade and a half, the Netherlands was selling off tons of gold in order to reduce its reserve. However, there weren’t that many buyers out there and they sold less than the country wanted. More recently the country has had less ambition to sell gold. Currently, the country holds the same amount of tons, 612.45 that they have over the last few years. However, the country has increased its percentage of foreign reserves to 61.2 %. 8.) Japan Japan is another country which had been increasing its gold reserves since the 1960’s. Their official gold holdings were reported at 765.2 tons. About 2.4% of Japan’s gold today is in foreign reserve. Historically, Japan has always held a bit more gold than other countries. This was true until 2011, when they began to sell some of their reserve in order to pump money into the economy after the tsunami and the following Fukushima nuclear disaster. But even with selling, Japan’s central bank has been one of the most aggressive practitioners of quantitative easing. For example, in January of 2016, it lowered interest rates below zero, which has helped fuel demand in gold around the world. 7.) Switzerland Prior to 1997, Switzerland was steadily building its gold reserves. In 1997, the decision was made to sell some of those reserves to bolster the Swiss currency and diversify the foreign reserves. The percent of foreign reserves in Switzerland is currently 6.7 %. Switzerland actually has the world’s largest reserves of gold per capita and currently has reported 1,040 tons. Over time, many citizens in the country started to feel like the bank was getting rid of too much gold. They then banded together with the “Save the Swiss” movement. However, once everyone was able to vote in 2014, the vote came to a no, and gold continued to be sold. During World War II, Switzerland became the center of the gold trade in Europe, making transactions with both the Allies and Axis powers. Today, much of its gold trading is done with Hong Kong and China. Around last year, the Swiss National Bank made a $5.9 billion profit, reportedly from its gold holdings. Ghana has had a gold rush but here, Afua Hirsch discovers how Chinese immigrants are profiting from industrialising the country's small-scale mining industry. She sees for herself that, for the many locals who chance losing life and limb for a piece of the same pie, the risks are rarely worth it, and explores where the responsibility for regulating this industry lies. South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines

10:37
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Why Isn't Congo as Rich as Saudi Arabia? Massive Tax Evasion

04:38
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is rich in natural resources, yet the average citizen lives on only 72 cents a day. The foreign mining companies are getting rich while the general population is living in poverty. Many Congolese citizens are diging through the dirt on their hands and knees in search their fair share of the countries natural minerals. While there are taxes on the mining companies who benefit from the countries resources it is proving difficult to actually collect the money that is owed. Vocativ spoke to one tax inspector who explained that tax evasion and government fraud is rampant throughout the mining industry. So it seems that until those benefiting from the countries natural wealth start paying their fare share, many average citizens will have to continue digging through the mud to get by. Congo, My Precious. The Curse of the coltan mines in Congo

52:01
Watch more https://rtd.rt.com/tags/illegal-mining/ The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty. Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations. For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse. "Emerald mining in Zambia" by GIA

09:39
With that new GIA Field video you will be taken with the GIA Field Expedition (FE56) that took place in September 2014 in Zambia. You will surely feel the lure of emerald—central Africa’s green treasure—in this short GIA video. First, you’ll visit the Musakashi, Zambia, emerald mining area where mining is carried out by local people with simple hand tools. Next, you’ll travel with Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu and the GIA team to Zambia’s Kafubu area, one of Africa’s oldest gem-mining areas. “There are maybe 400 mines, and maybe less than 10 are active,” says Pardieu. While there, you’ll witness several active emerald mines. Some are very small-scale and operated by local people, while some, like the MIKU and the KAGEM mines, are very large. The latter is probably the largest colored gemstone mining pit in the world. In this video, you’ll view the entire KAGEM operation—a modern, highly sophisticated mechanized pit mine. As you stand on the rim of the pit, a ripple of explosions blasts ore for processing. You will witness workers recovering emeralds from the pit. You’ll also venture underground into Gemfields’ exploratory underground workings and see the firm’s secure processing and sorting facility. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel, Field Gemologist Andy Lucas, Gems & Gemology Technical Editor Dr. Tao Hsu, and Field Gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.
Afghanistan's Secret Billion Dollar Emerald Mines

Hidden Gems: After suffering the Soviets, the Taliban, and the War on Terror, Afghanistan has had its share of turmoil; but can 1,000 billion dollars worth of emeralds lift Afghanistan out of poverty? He's a Frenchman who first came to Afghanistan to train Afghan security services before venturing into the emerald trade. He sees a huge chance here to exploit a market that could easily increase in value twenty or thirty-fold, but the obstacles are not inconsiderable. Just to get to the mines Raphael has to travel the 150 Kilometres from Kabul to Panjshir, right through Taliban kidnap country. When he gets there he finds an industry in the dark ages, where homemade pyrotechnics are exploded in poorly dug mineshafts, killing many miners and ruining the quality of up to 75% of the stones they dig. "If you see the damage being done to these stones... so much is lost", Yama Torabi from Integrity Watch Afghanistan tells us. The government here remains hopelessly out of touch with the industry that "still (uses) a mining law adopted 100 years ago". But as the country prepares for elections and Europeans like Raphael open up the gem trade here, could this be a beacon of hope for the future? World's Deepest Mine - Gold Alchemy

04:51
South Africa's TauTona mine, real life alchemy, and Halicephalobus Mephisto. Footage from the 2012 documentary, "Down to the Earth's Core". We have travelled into space and looked deep into the universe's depths, but the world beneath our feet remains unexplored and unseen. Now, that's about to change. For the first time in one epic unbroken shot, we embark on an impossible mission - using spectacular computer generated imagery to smash through three thousand miles of solid rock, and venture from our world into the underworld and on to the core of the Earth itself. It's a journey fraught with danger. One thousand feet down we find ourselves inside one of the planet's most volatile places - the San Andreas Fault. Caught between two huge rock slabs, we watch as stress builds and then releases. It unleashes an earthquake and blasts us on towards rivers of molten rock, explosive volcanoes, tears in the Earth's crust and giant tornadoes of liquid metal. But for every danger, there are wonders beyond imagination. Four hundred feet below the surface, a three hundred million year old fossilized forest, with every leaf and every piece of bark perfectly preserved. At one thousand feet down we enter a cave of giant crystals, glistening in deadly 122 degree heat. More than two miles underground we find buried treasure - gold and gems. Deeper still there are valuable resources - salt, oil, coal and iron. And over one hundred miles down we see the sparkling beauty of diamonds. As we descend we piece together our planet's extraordinary story. We rewind time to discover how prehistoric forests became modern-day fuel. 1700 feet down a layer of rock reveals the extraordinary story of the dinosaurs' cataclysmic death. We watch stalactites form and gold grow before our eyes. The deeper we travel into the underworld the more we understand our world above the surface. A bigger picture takes shape - a cycle of destruction and creation, driven by the core that sustains our dynamic planet and makes the Earth the only planet with life in a seemingly lifeless universe. Until, finally, three thousand miles down, we reach the core. Inside it lie the secrets of life as we know it - the magnetic force field that protects life on Earth from the sun's deadly rays, the ancient heat source that keeps our planet alive. Down to the Earth's Core brings the latest science together with breathtaking computer generated imagery. The result is an unmissable journey into an extraordinary world - full of dangers, wonders and secrets. And it's all down there, beneath our feet, right now waiting to be discovered.

Zimbabwe's Blood Diamond Killing Fields

With shocking evidence now uncovered, Zimbabwe’'s diamond trade faces suspension. "We were told ‘here are the guns, sitting in the truck, do you want to stay?’" says Andrew Cranswick, CEO of the mining company who owns the rights to mine diamonds in Marange. After his company was evicted, the Marange fields were opened up to the people and tens of thousands of Zimbabweans came to dig, paying the police a commission. Yet the police didn'’t always play fair - "$15 million worth of diamonds were confiscated", says one former miner – and soon the police were replaced by Mugabe’s own military. "Mugabe needed a way to buy the loyalty of the army" says Ken Roth, "the military were ordered to kill". In the first week of November, helicopter gunships launched a massacre on the Marange diamond fields. Evidence has been collected of 200 deaths. Those who weren’'t killed were raped or crippled. "They told us if we wanted to go home we had to sleep with the men", says one woman, "the soldiers watched and laughed". Next month, the Kimberley process, the international body charged with stopping trade in conflict diamonds, will decide whether Zimbabwe should be suspended. Yet with many Western governments involved in Zimbabwe'’s diamond trade, a former delegate of the Kimberley process believes this deadly business may yet be protected. 12 Amazing Rare And Valuable Gemstone Discoveries

07:36
From the most famous gemstone in the world the Hope Diamond the a discovery of the giant Jadeite, 12 rare and expensive gems! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 6. Heart of Eternity The Heart of Eternity weighs in at 27.64 carats, and it is another that was found at the Premier Diamond Mine in South Africa. The diamond was unveiled in January of 2000 alongside a lot of other diamonds. The shape and name of the stone were most likely inspired by the fictional Heart of the Ocean that was featured in the mega-blockbuster Titanic. This stone was almost stolen in November of 2000, but the thieves never managed to do it. In 2012, people though Floyd Mayweather might have bought the stone for an engagement ring for his fiance, but the buyer of the diamond was never revealed. 5. Massive Jadeite Jadeite is one of the world’s most expensive and rare gemstones in the world. Myanmar is the leading producer of this rare and beautiful gem, and the stone was found in a mine in Kachin within the country. The translucent, intensely colored gem is not to be confused with the more traditional jade. The two stones may be related, but Jadeite is rarer and substantially more valuable. That is what makes this discovery of this massive jadeite deposit all the more impressive. The huge stone was discovered in Myanmar in 2016 in a jade mine. The stone that was found is worth a staggering 170 million. The gem is 14 feet high and 19 feet long. The country plans to sell the giant gem to the neighboring China so that it can be made into jewelry and other items. Jadeite is worth about $20,000 per karat. 4. Millennium Star This diamond takes the title second largest top grade diamond behind the Centenary Diamond. Weighing in at 203.04 carats, it's a class D colorless, pear-shaped diamond. It's insured for over $120 million. It was found in Zaire, which is a country in Africa, in 1990. This is one of the diamonds that was featured alongside The Heart of Eternity. It was almost stolen in November in 2000 alongside the Heart of Eternity in the exhibition that was done by De Beers. 3. Great Chrysanthemum Diamond Although the name's a mouthful, this diamond maintains a reputation as one of the most famous diamonds in the world. It was discovered in 1963 in South Africa, and it weighs around 198 carats. It's an orange-brown color that is the central focus of a necklace that also features 410 other diamonds. The diamond was on display at the Smithsonian alongside the Hope Diamond briefly, and it's been on display in many other places. Today, the necklace is owned by an anonymous person who bought it for about 30 million. It's one of only 300 diamonds all over the world that measure in at over 100 carats among a lot of other stones on the list. 2. Cullinan Diamond This is another diamond with a pretty storied past. It was found in 1905 in South Africa and after is was refined it was presented to King Edward VII on his 66th birthday. Several diamonds were cut from the rough one found, but the most famous, Cullinan I or the Great Star of Africa, is considered the crown jewel of the British Monarchy. Cullinan I makes up the centerpiece and head of the royal scepter that is wielded by the supreme rulers at formal events like coronations. Cullinan II takes up another prominent place in the official crown of the reigning royalty. Nine different stones were cut from the original, and they each vary in size. Each stone also has history attached to them. It's been a pretty eventful 100 years for these rocks. There isn't a price tag on these jewels but given that they have been owned by the British Monarchy for so long, the price wouldn't be inexpensive. 1.Hope Diamond The Hope Diamond is the single most famous gemstone in the world. It's inspired movies, been worn by famous people, and it even has a curse attached to it. The diamond weighs in at 45.52 carats, and it is believed to have been found in India. The diamond got its start in France, though, when King Louis XIV first owned it. It was passed down by the French nobles until the French Revolution when it was stolen after King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were decapitated. From then on, the diamond has had 17 owners, including British royalty, Thomas Hope who it got its name from, Pierre Cartier, Harry Winston, and where it currently resides at the Smithsonian. Right now it is insured for $250 million dollars, and it isn't for sale.

Best Country of Sub-Saharan Africa - Botswana

05:18
I think Botswana - it's most prosperous country of continental Sub-Saharan Africa "Botswana - Driving Sustainable Growth " video taken from http://www.asiabusinesschannel.tv Botswana's economy is stable and well-managed with low rates of inflation. The country offers a stable workforce, good industrial relations and competitive labour costs. In addition, a good transport infrastructure and modern telecommunication system lend to the attractiveness of doing business in the country. Furthermore, the country enjoys a reputation as the least corrupt country in Africa with high transparency and a well-developed legal system. Minerals, especially diamonds, have been the mainstay of the country's economy since independence from the British in 1966. The country's high rate of economic growth is due largely to this mining sector, which accounts for 90% of national foreign exchange earnings, and at nearly 40%, provides the single largest source of GDP as well as government revenues. Despite continued challenges such as HIV/AIDS, small market size and landlocked location, Botswana, already one of Africa's wealthiest nations with a thriving economy based on diamond mining and tourism, remains one of the best investment opportunities in the developing world

Blood diamonds: the international response

08:05
The West African state of Sierra Leone and earned as much as US$ 400 million in a decade of illegal smuggling. 'Conflict' or 'blood diamonds' were traded for arms and funded a brutal rebel campaign. The civil war in Sierra Leone and similar conflicts in other African countries such as Angola and DR Congo left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands refugees. Today some believe that diamonds fund the terrorist activities of al-Queda. Following UN sanctions imposed on diamond producing countries, the international community reacted further by establishing the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. The EU played a significant role in negotiating the scheme - driving this multilateral process. Since January 2003, unpolished diamonds can only be bought or sold between the 43 participating countries. A Kimberley Process certificate that acts as an assurance the diamonds are 'conflict free', must accompany all diamonds. This VNR revisits Sierra Leone a country and a people visibly struggling to recover from a war fuelled by 'blood diamonds'. The VNR features alluvial mining in the Kono mining region of the country. Here, we meet with Sahfrea Mohammed Konoboy and his family, a miner who recounts his familys experience when they had to flee the rebel conflict. He speaks of his attempt to rebuild his life and his home. In the report, we meet with officials in the capital Freetown who administer the Kimberley Process Certification scheme and we follow the diamonds to Antwerp, Belgium, where authorities carry out thorough checks on the gems. We also take a closer look at the Kimberley Process mechanism. 2004 http://ec.europa.eu/external_relations/kimb/intro/index.htm
THEY FORGOT THESE GOLD MINES!

11:14
Abandoned Mines Mining has been around for ages. Like, the oldest mine is said to be around 43,000 years old! Mining is the process of digging into the earth to find minerals such as coal, gold, diamond or any other mineral that humans find valuable. Since mining has been around for so long and people will dig just about anywhere to find something valuable, it’s not a surprise that many mines become abandoned or forgotten.

Poisoned By The Gold Rush

14:23
Gold is quickly becoming the new cocaine in Colombia. The precious metal is now the currency of choice for individuals and groups engaging in illicit trade in the South American country. That's because unlike cocaine, it's perfectly legal to carry gold, and unlike money, it's virtually untraceable. But there are some major side-effects of Colombia's new gold rush that locals are curiously quiet about: erectile dysfunction and brain damage. VICE News correspondent Monica Villamizar travelled to the Antioquia, Colombia, a hotbed of illegal gold mining, to investigate an unprecedented surge in impotence and neurological problems that experts are attributing to mercury, an essential gold-digging element. Central African Republic: The way of the warlord

Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN In the war-torn Central African Republic, former rebels who mounted a coup in 2013 are now dreaming of independence. FRANCE 24’s reporters James André and Anthony Fouchard went to meet one of the most powerful armed groups in the country, in the capital of their parallel state in the north. Since gaining independence from France in 1960, the Central African Republic has never truly experienced peace. In March 2013, a coalition of rebel groups called the Seleka seized power in country’s fifth coup d'état. Leaders on all sides exploited religious tensions for political ends and the country descended into violence. The Seleka, led by Michel Djotodia, was forced to give up power after nine months, completely unable to restore security. Under UN auspices, France deployed more than 2,000 soldiers to restore a fragile peace and avoid what it called a “genocide". But President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, who was elected in March 2016, has still not managed to bring calm to a country devastated by civil war. On the contrary: violence actually resumed in the capital Bangui in April 2018. ►► On France24.com: Central African Republic's president Touadéra slams 'enemies of the peace' Since being routed, the rebels have been divided and fragmented, but have maintained their ability to cause trouble. The Popular Front for the Renaissance of the Central African Republic (known by its French acronym FPRC) is one of the most powerful armed groups. Abdoulaye Hissène, the FPRC’s military leader, is based in the northeastern town of Ndélé, but is massing his troops at the gates of Bangui. Towards a partition of the country? Although the prospect of a fresh coup seems unlikely, everyone is wondering about a possible partition of the country. The rebels prefer to talk about federalism and autonomy. Although they control all the main roads, provide security and even levy taxes, they do not want to create the impression of cutting ties with the central government, which does not consider the north a priority. The FPRC now wants to improve its image, severely tarnished after the violence of 2013. The rebels are literally sitting on a gold and diamond mine, the northeast being rich in natural resources. This is attracting Russian private security companies, officially invited by the central government to train army recruits. The climate is tense, but in the meantime, Abdoulaye Hissène knows very well that the weak army cannot dislodge him. "My men are in Bangui, they are just waiting for the political green light," he says. Whether he’s bluffing or not, guns speak louder than words and appear to be the main negotiating method in this region. http://www.france24.com/en/reporters Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/France24_en

Conflict Minerals, Rebels and Child Soldiers in Congo

38:02
Warlords, soldiers, and child laborers all toil over a mineral you've never even heard of. Coltan is a conflict mineral in nearly every cell phone, laptop, and electronic device. It's also tied to the deaths of over 5 million people in Congo since 1990.
