SOUNDBITE (English) Vincent Kwan, Chief Economist of Hang Seng Bank Hong Kong: "Hong Kong will become the first city outside mainland China that can offer investors a first taste of Renminbi financial services. So in this sense it''''''''s a giant step for mainland China actually, because by allowing Hong Kong people to exchange Hong Kong dollars into Renminbi though with their limit, it still represents a relaxation of capital control by mainland China. In such a case, I think probably it paves way for future relaxation in the future." 10. Wide of Vincent Kwan 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Vincent Kwan, Chief Economist of Hang Seng Bank Hong Kong: " By allowing them (mainland visitors) to use credit card in Hong Kong, effectively, they lifted the limit of these outgoing visitors in carrying money in Hong Kong, currently they are limits for them. I think for Hong Kong financial services and Hong Kong as a financial centre, it''''''''s very important that funds are being gathered in a place and Hong Kong can provide all kinds of financial services." 12. Wide of an exchange shop 13. Mid of customers exchanging money 14. Sign writing money exchange 15. Various of commercial buildings in Hong Kong 16. Various of street scenes in Hong Kong STORYLINE: Hong Kong banks can begin to offer individual Renminbi (RMB) services including deposit, exchange, remittance and credit card to their customers on a trial basis on Wednesday. Bank of China Hong Kong (BOCHK), Hong Kong''''''''s second largest bank, starts to provide Renminbi savings and fixed deposits with maximum interest rates of up to 0.5 per cent and up to 0.55 per cent per annum respectively. As for exchange services, BOCHK, the only Renminbi clearing bank in the territory appointed by the People''''''''s Bank of China, provides RMB banknote and HKD (Hong Kong dollar) two-way exchange service to personal customers. Each customer is entitled to exchange up to 20,000 yuan (around 2,400 US dollars) through a deposit account. The Chief Economist of Hang Seng Bank, Vincent Kwan, said that he does not think the RMB deposit service will have a significant impact on the economy immediately, with daily personal exchange limits currently fixed at 20,000 yuan. He added that the significance of the RMB banking service is more symbolic than functional. Apart from Renminbi deposit services, Vincent Kwan added that allowing mainland visitors to use credit cards in Hong Kong helps remove barriers to the flow of funds between mainland China and Hong Kong. The maximum interest rates offered among Hong Kong banks for Renminbi savings deposit are between 0.5 to 0.75 per cent, and fixed deposit are between 0.55 to 0.78 per cent per annum. The rates are higher than that offered in Hong Kong dollars saving accounts. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited has no firm date when it intends to start the RMB services yet. Exchange shops currently provide currency exchange services including the RMB in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Food Tour - Breakfast, Bamboo Noodles Won Ton, and Chinese Dai Pai Dong Feast!

28:26
►Hong Kong Travel Guide for Food Lovers: https://goo.gl/AlcXel ►25 Must-Eat Dishes in Hong Kong: https://goo.gl/8tLKwN ►Subscribe to my videos: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe On Day 37 of our Round The World Trip For Food, we continued the food tour of Hong Kong starting with a classic Hong Kong breakfast of lemon tea and a beef and scrambled egg sandwich. We then had some delicious bamboo pounded noodles and wonton, and then continued to have dinner at a famous dai pai dong. 00:29 Sun Hang Yuen (新香園 堅記 Thank you to Josephine for this recommendation) - For breakfast in Hong Kong we headed over to Sham Shui Po and went to a classic Hong Kong cafe and restaurant called Sun Hang Yuen (新香園 堅記). I ordered my usual hot lemon tea, a glass of black tea with a half of a lemon chopped up inside. It was wonderful. We then had a beef and scrambled egg sandwich, which was surprisingly much better than I thought it was going to be. The bread was toasted wonderfully and the beef and eggs on the inside tasted so good, fried in what I think was butter. Total price - 33 HKD ($4.25) 4:58 Sham Shui Po market - After eating breakfast we walked around the Sham Shui Po market, a local fresh wet market in Hong Kong. The market was busy and stocked with everything you could imaging that goes into Hong Kong food. 6:29 Kwan Kee Bamboo Noodle (坤記竹昇面) - There are many famous restaurants in Hong Kong that serve egg noodles and wonton, but I really wanted to find a restaurant that specialized in bamboo kneaded noodles, which is becoming harder and harder to find in Hong Kong. So finally I found a place called Kwan Kee Bamboo Noodle (坤記竹昇面), a new restaurant that uses the owner's family recipe and technique for making his noodles. I was hoping to get to see the noodles being made, but unfortunately they weren’t making them at the time we got there to eat. Nevertheless, the noodles were still made using a bamboo pole to knead the dough. The noodles were amazing, had such a fantastic texture to them, and the wontons were equally as delicious. It was a fantastic noodle eating experience in Hong Kong. Total price - 84 HKD ($10.83) 13:11 Mong Kok, Ladies Market - Mongkok is one of the most famous areas in Hong Kong for shopping, and we walked around the area for a little bit. Ladies Market is a walking street flea market where you’ll find everything from clothes to souvenirs to luggage. 16:40 Tsim Sha Tsui, Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Star Ferry - 2.3 HKD ($0.30) - After walking around Mongkok we took the bus over to Tsim Sha Tsui to walk around and enjoy the views of the skyline of Hong Kong. 18:26 Tung Po Restaurant at Java Road Market (Thank you to Charles for this recommendation) - For dinner, we went to Java Road Market, and to a restaurant called Tung Po, that’s a well known dai pai dong restaurant within the market. They serve a huge menu of different Cantonese and even Thai dishes. My wife and I ordered a couple of different dishes, the highlight of the meal being the razor clams stir fried in black bean sauce. In addition to the food, the ambiance of the restaurant is exactly what you want in Hong Kong. Total price - 464 HKD ($59.83) 26:00 A Symphony of Lights - Finally to end this day of food in Hong Kong we went back to Tsim Sha Tsui to see the symphony of lights show. UK: HONG KONG MONETARY AUTHORITY CHIEF JOSEPH YAM SPEECH

02:53
English/Nat People in Hong Kong will likely keep feeling the pain of higher interest rates until economic troubles ease in Indonesia and Japan, the chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority told a city seminar in London on Wednesday. But Joseph Yam would not predict how long what he called an Asian premium would compel Hong Kong bankers to charge the high rates. And Yam warned that the exchange rate link between the Hong Kong and US dollar must be maintained if another economic crisis in Asia is to be avoided. In his seminar speech which he chose to title 'Eye of the Storm', Hong Kong Monetary Authority's chief executive Joseph Yam explained to his audience how Hong Kong had managed to survive the financial storm which has swept through Asia. Hong Kong had to raise interest rates late last year to preserve a tight link between the Hong Kong dollar and the U.S. dollar. Yam said that although this had been economically painful to individuals and businesses in Hong Kong, the link had proved to be sound monetary policy for Hong Kong. SOUNDBITE: (English) \"The bitter experience of others in the region is perhaps a sharp reminder to Hong Kong that the exchange rate link must be kept. This is obviously for our own good, but I imagine also for the good of the region and possibly beyond, for if the Hong Kong dollar's fixed link with the US dollar were to be broken, the likelihood of yet another shock wave of gigantic dimensions sweeping across financial markets worldwide cannot be dismissed.\" SUPER CAPTION:Joseph Yam, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Monetary Authority. And Yam insisted that there was no need for the Hong Kong dollar to break its link with the US dollar and instead be pegged to the renminbi, the currency of Mainland China. SOUNDBITE: (English) \"But this does not necessarily mean that the Hong Kong dollar will need to move in sync with the RMB, in the highly unlikely event that the RMB is devalued. The Hong Kong dollar is linked to the US dollar and not to the RMB. The economic relationship has always been very close between Hong Kong and the Mainland of China. There has always been separate currencies for Hong Kong and the Mainland, and 'one country, two currencies' is further enshrined in the Basic Law governing Hong Kong for 50 years after the resumption of sovereignty. The many differences between Hong Kong and the Mainland of China argue for monetary segregation and not monetary union.\" SUPER CAPTION:Joseph Yam, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Monetary Authority. And Yam added that while most countries in Asia had weathered the financial storm, it remained to be seen whether Indonesia could overcome its problems. SOUNDBITE: (English) \"I think the problems in Asia are being resolved, other than in Indonesia where perhaps it will take a little more time. Thailand, for example is turned around, Korea is turned around, and their currencies have actually rebound. So I think, I hope, Asian financial turmoil will settle down within this year, that is my hope. As to China, its economy continues to quite robustly. In 1998 there is a forecast of growth rate of 8 per cent in real terms, of course that would be beneficial to Hong Kong because Hong Kong does provide quite a lot of services, including financial services to the Mainland of China.\" SUPER CAPTION:Joseph Yam, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Monetary Authority. Yam said only time could tell whether serious economic mistakes could be rectified in the near future. Time to end the HK dollar link?

01:38
Ever since it was founded, Hong Kong has had some form of linked foreign exchange system, be it to silver, then the British pound, and now the US dollar. The link has enabled Hong Kong to flourish as a centre of global trade. But twice this week the Hong Kong Monetary Authority has intervened to keep the HK dollar pegged to the US dollar. Now some people are now asking whether it is time to break the link.

China aiming to depreciate USD/CNY; Fund managers getting out of high yield areas

07:22
Marcus Ashworth, Chief Market Strategist for Haitong Securities, joined Nick Batsford and Zak Mir, technical analyst for Zak’s Traders Café, on the Tip TV Finance Show to discuss the Yuan and the recent events in China, plus a look at the bond market. Depreciation of the Yuan against the USD main aim Ashworth began by noting the change on Friday over FX Trading, with brokers in China now applying for FX licences. He continued that China have pegged the Yuan to the USD since 2009, but to the majority of other currencies the Yuan has strengthened massively. Ashworth believed the Chinese are diverting attention away from the USD/CNY, so they can then depreciate the Yuan against the USD. Watch the video to see more analysis on the Yuan, as well as detail on the bond market and the possibility of a Santa rally. typical chungking mansions Indian curry joint, where to eat in Hong Kong

This is a typical restaurant within the massive Chungking mansions complex. It is an Indian place that has a set meal for $75 HKD, which is about $8.00 US dollars. You go to the second floor, just walk up the flight of stairs and order their "set meal" ... it's really a great deal let me tell you .. some of the restaurants don't offer such a great deal and you need to make sure you know how much your meal is in advance or they will occasionally surreptitiously give you a "large" portion and you find the bill to be double what you expected.
