https://patreon.com/freeschool - Help support more content like this! What is an ecosystem? An ecosystem is everything that interacts in a specific area. That includes plants, animals, sun, air, water, and even rocks! In a healthy ecosystem, every part gets what they need - food, water, shelter, light - and all of the parts work together. Unfortunately, an ecosystem can become unbalanced through natural or manmade disturbances. The good news? Ecosystems can recover if we just help them out a little! Eco-Grief and Ecofeminism | Heidi Hutner | TEDxSBU

16:55
Heidi Hutner's talk on "Eco-Grief and Ecofeminism", is the story her journey into environmental teaching and activism, after her cancer diagnosis at 35, and after the loss of her parents. Both parents had cancer. This inspiring talk moves from grief to hope, and calls on each of us to act. She draws on a history of women scientists and environmentalists for her inspiration. If we do act, as Heidi says, "we can fix this thing." Dr. Heidi Hutner is the director of the Sustainability Studies Program at Stony Brook University. She teaches and writes about environmental literature and film, environmental justice, ecofeminism, ecocriticism, and media. Shewrites for magazines and literary journals such as Ms. Magazine, Yes!, Spirituality and Health, Tikkun, American Society for Literature and the Environment, Proximity, Florida Journal Studies, and more, and she has contributed articles to environmental anthologies published by Oxford University Press, Palgrave, and others. Currently, she is working on two environmental memoirs entitled Inspiring Green Minds: Memoirs of An Eco Professor and Nowhere: Memoirs of an Atomic Family. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Religion and Environmentalism: Carl Sagan on Conservation, Ecology, Nature, Values, Ethics (1990)

01:51:42
Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9, 1934 -- December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, science popularizer and science communicator in astronomy and natural sciences. His books: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=tra0c7-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=2944ce7277c6bf85fa527a369052fa7f&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=books&keywords=carl%20sagan He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. He published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. He advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Sagan is known for his popular science books and for the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which he narrated and co-wrote. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. Sagan wrote the novel Contact, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. He attended the University of Chicago, where he participated in the Ryerson Astronomical Society,[10] received a bachelor of arts in self-proclaimed "nothing" with general and special honors in 1954, a bachelor of science in physics in 1955, and a master of science in physics in 1956 before earning a PhD in astronomy and astrophysics in 1960.[11][12][13] During his time as an honors program undergraduate, Sagan worked in the laboratory of the geneticist H. J. Muller and wrote a thesis on the origins of life with physical chemist H. C. Urey. He used the summer months of his graduate studies to work with planetary scientist Gerard Kuiper (thesis advisor), physicist George Gamow, and chemist Melvin Calvin. From 1960 to 1962 Sagan was a Miller Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley.[14] From 1962 to 1968, he worked at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At the same time, he worked with geneticist Joshua Lederberg. Sagan lectured and did research at Harvard University until 1968, when he moved to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, after being denied tenure at Harvard. He became a full professor at Cornell in 1971, and he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies there. From 1972 to 1981, Sagan was the Associate Director of the Center for Radiophysics and Space Research (CRSR) at Cornell. Sagan was associated with the U.S. space program from its inception. From the 1950s onward, he worked as an advisor to NASA, where one of his duties included briefing the Apollo astronauts before their flights to the Moon. Sagan contributed to many of the robotic spacecraft missions that explored the Solar System, arranging experiments on many of the expeditions. He conceived the idea of adding an unalterable and universal message on spacecraft destined to leave the Solar System that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find it. Sagan assembled the first physical message that was sent into space: a gold-anodized plaque, attached to the space probe Pioneer 10, launched in 1972. Pioneer 11, also carrying another copy of the plaque, was launched the following year. He continued to refine his designs; the most elaborate message he helped to develop and assemble was the Voyager Golden Record that was sent out with the Voyager space probes in 1977. Sagan often challenged the decisions to fund the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station at the expense of further robotic missions.[15] Sagan taught a course on critical thinking at Cornell University until he died in 1996 from pneumonia, a few months after finding that he was in remission of myelodysplastic syndrome. Former student David Morrison describes Sagan as "an 'idea person' and a master of intuitive physical arguments and back-of-the-envelope calculations."[16] Sagan's contributions were central to the discovery of the high surface temperatures of the planet Venus. In the early 1960s no one knew for certain the basic conditions of that planet's surface, and Sagan listed the possibilities in a report later depicted for popularization in a Time--Life book, Planets. His own view was that Venus was dry and very hot as opposed to the balmy paradise others had imagined. He had investigated radio emissions from Venus and concluded that there was a surface temperature of 500 °C (900 °F). As a visiting scientist to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he contributed to the first Mariner missions to Venus, working on the design and management of the project. Mariner 2 confirmed his conclusions on the surface conditions of Venus in 1962. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_sagan

Coca Colonization: How Coca Cola Colonized Latin America by A Partial Perspective This video addresses how dominant the Coca Cola Company has been in developing countries. Research shows that Coca Cola has come to dominate even rural areas, especially if they have increased tourism. Thomas Leatherman calls this Coca Colonization. This new economy that Coca Cola helps establish disrupts local farming activities, which strengthens the power food companies have in these areas. Through an integrated model of education, cultivation and distribution, The Dunagiri Foundation empowers and educates villagers to cultivate these herbs, and discourages illegal wild-harvesting practices in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The RARE project’s first herb of focus is kutki, which was classified as endangered in 1997 due to unsustainable farming practices and severe over-exploitation. Today, one crop of kutki, grown without pesticides, chemicals or GMOs, is being harvested each year by farmers and villagers in the remote Himalayan village of Gesh. In 2018, LifeSpa purchased the entire kutki crop. We took a percentage of the crop that we needed to create a kutki product as part of our RARE project line, and we are giving 15% of sales back: 7.5% directly to the growers and 7.5% to The Dunagiri Foundation to help with the cultivation of other endangered herbs. All the profits from the sale of the remaining kutki crop go directly to The Dunagiri Foundation to support the farmers and villagers who are growing these threatened herbs. The RARE project provides ecologically responsible and sustainable income for the villagers, and also supports the legal and ethical cultivation of endangered Ayurvedic herbs. Word associations in Ecology abstracts over time

01:33
by Drs. Ray Dybzinski (Loyola University Chicago, Institute of Environmental Sustainability) and Gord McNickle (Purdue University, Botany and Plant Pathology). See below for details. Taken from abstracts in the journal "Ecology". Words that are closer in space occur more frequently together. Words that are the same color also occur more frequently together (although this qualitative measure is perhaps more useful for understanding single frames). Word size correlates with absolute occurrences. Associations are drawn from a moving window of 400 abstracts. We used the VOS mapping and clustering technique as used in the VOS Viewer software (www.vosviewer.com) and described in Van Eck & Waltman 2010 (J of the Am Soc for Information Science & Technology) and references therein. To create fluid animations, we added an "inertia" term to their objective function that weights each word's spatial location in the previous frame. All the work was done using Mathematica software. Ecology started using abstracts in the mid-1960s, which is why the animation starts there. In 1999, the inertia was overwhelmed and thus the spatial locations of the words flip on the screen. We freeze this frame so that viewers can re-orient themselves to the cluster(s) they were following before the flip. It may be useful to pause the animation at that point to re-orient before continuing.

Eco-friendly supermarket uses zero plastic packaging

05:37
(15 Nov 2016) LEAD IN: Could this be a sign of things to come? An independent supermarket in Copenhagen uses zero plastic packaging. Instead, LØS Market offers customers cotton or compostable paper bags, or re-usable glass containers. STORY-LINE: It's late afternoon and shoppers at Copenhagen's LØS Market are busily picking up some items on their way home. But there's one big difference here. Instead of taking pre-packaged items and stuffing them into plastic bags, customers are encouraged to use biodegradable bags or glass containers and take only what they need. Once they're done shopping, the produce is weighed and customers pay for only what they've taken. "It makes no sense at all, when I go home and buy my shopping somewhere else, and I buy a packet of rice and I buy a cucumber, and then when I come home I just tear it apart and throw it out, it doesn't make any sense at all," says August Septimius Krogh from LØS market. "In this place, I can buy stuff and have nothing to throw out afterwards." LØS Market - which translates as 'loose market' - opened in the Danish capital this summer. It's claimed to be the first of its kind in the Danish capital. Director Frederic Hamburger says regular customers have told him they're already noticing less plastic in their waste bins. He decided to start the project after being inspired by similar ventures around the world. "The containers that are used in here is glass, is cotton, is compostable paper bags as well, organic, so people are re-using that all the time, so it's circular and it's lasting all the time," says Hamburger. "This is the point - not using plastic and instead re-usable materials as well to continue again and again, and buy." The vegan supermarket sells everything from fruits and vegetables to nuts, beans and rice. There are around 400 organic products, all sold in bulk without any packaging. There's even these taps that dispense organic wine. They can be used in conjunction with re-usable glass bottles. Once all the wine is consumed, the glass bottles are returned to be washed then re-used. "We say down here that it's more sexy to shop down here because you get a product that is nice to look at and it's easy to work with," says Krogh. "And secondly, you only have to buy what you need instead of buying a fixed amount of food. So, in that sense we make less food waste because you don't have to buy certain amounts." Those here at LØS Market believe the concept could work on a large scale. One hurdle may be shopper acceptance and changing well-ingrained habits, but customers here don't seem to mind. "I think a lot of people are keen to now how they can help in some way," says Ffion Legg, a student at the University of Copenhagen. "And so recycling is a big deal and people are getting used to that, but I think that this is a huge way that we could reduce our waste." Krogh claims reducing the amount of plastic waste generated by shoppers also has some preferential knock-on effects, such as fewer garbage trucks on the road. According to Denmark's Environment Agency, the average Dane produces 759 kg of trash per year. "You don't need to empty your garbage tray at home and there will be no huge garbage truck driving around to take out your trash. In that sense there is a difference," says Krogh. "Because if it's only one guy doing it, it doesn't mean much, but if one guy is producing 750 kilos of garbage a year - which Danes do - imagine if it was a hundred guys or a thousand people." Tackling mounting waste, one customer at a time. The Horrors of the Grand Guignol: Crash Course Theater #35

11:43
Prepare to be horrified, and to look into the face of inhumanity with the Grand Guignol. Mike Rugnetta teaches you about one of theater history's most horrible chapters. The Grand Guignol was a French theater based in Paris from the late 19th century until 1962. The troupe, led by writers like Andre de Lorde and Alfred Binet put on dark, violent, bloody shows that were a precursor of the horror media that we love to consume today. You'll learn about stage effects, makeup, and maybe even why humans like to stare into the darkness and terrify themselves. Crash Course is on Patreon! Peer Community In. What is it?

03:40
The project "Peer Community in (PCI)" (https://peercommunityin.org/) has been launched in January 2017 and now counts three communities: PCI Evolutionary Biology (https://evolbiol.peercommunityin.org/), PCI Ecology (https://ecology.peercommunityin.org/) and PCI Paleontology (https://paleo.peercommunityin.org/). These communities include several hundreds of recommenders playing the role of editors who recommend unpublished preprints based on peer-reviews to make them complete, reliable and citable articles, without the need for publication in ‘traditional’ journals. Evaluation and recommendation by PCI Evol Biol, PCI Paleo and PCI Ecology are free of charge. When a recommender decides to recommend a preprint, he/she writes a recommendation text that is published along with all the editorial correspondence (reviews, recommender's decisions, authors’ replies) by these PCIs. The preprint itself is not published ; it remains in the preprint server where it has been posted by the authors. PCI Evol Biol and PCI Ecology recommenders can also recommend, but to a lesser extent, postprints.

💚🌱⚖️🤲🏼 Health, Ecology, Fairness, Care - Principles of Organic Agriculture!

01:08
Principles of Health, Principles of Ecology, Principles of Fairness, Principles of Care are the roots from which Organic Agriculture 🚜 grows and develops. They express the contribution that Organic Agriculture can make to the world. Composed as inter-connected ethical principles to inspire the organic movement - in its full diversity, they guide our development of positions, programs and standards. Agriculture is one of humankind’s most basic activities because all people need to nourish themselves daily. History, culture and community values are embedded in agriculture. The Principles apply to agriculture in the broadest sense, including the way people tend to soils, water, plants, and animals in order to produce, prepare and distribute food and other goods. They concern the way people interact with living landscapes, relate to one another and shape the legacy of future generations. The Principles of Organic Agriculture serve to inspire the organic movement in its full diversity. They guide IFOAM’s development of positions, programs, and standards. Furthermore, they are presented with a vision of their worldwide adoption. 📥 DOWNLOAD the Principles of Organic Agriculture brochure: https://www.ifoam.bio/sites/default/files/poa_english_web.pdf 🖱 BROWSE different translations of the Principles of Organic Agriculture: https://www.ifoam.bio/en/translations-principles-organic-agriculture 🔎 LEARN MORE about: 💚 Principles of Health https://www.ifoam.bio/en/principles-organic-agriculture/principle-health 🌱 Principles of Ecology https://www.ifoam.bio/en/principles-organic-agriculture/principle-ecology ⚖️ Principles of Fairness https://www.ifoam.bio/en/principles-organic-agriculture/principle-fairness 🤲🏼 Principles of Care https://www.ifoam.bio/en/principles-organic-agriculture/principle-care 💻 CHECK OUT our blog posts highlights important aspects of Organic Agriculture: How Organic Agriculture Can Help Achieve Food Security & Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/10/03/food-security/ How Collecting data can promote the Growth of Organic Agricultural https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/08/15/data-collection-promote-organic/ How to Restore the Broken Food System Through Organic Agriculture! https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/07/16/restoring-broken-food-system/ How to Convince Your Policy-Maker to Support Organic Agriculture! https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/03/29/policy-maker-support-organic-agriculture/ Improving Livelihoods of Rural Communities in East Africa with Organic Agriculture https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2017/12/11/rural/ Sikkim Chief Minister Celebrated for going 100% Organic https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2017/12/06/sikkim-chief-minister/ 📩 SUBSCRIBE to our blog ORGANIC WITHOUT BOUNDARIES for informative articles: https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/subscribe/ 📲 SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel to watch organic stories from the field. Crows, smarter than you think | John Marzluff | TEDxRainier

22:14
As research continues, the term "bird brain" no longer carries a negative connotation. Avian researcher John Marzluff showcases a few amazing, problem solving (and sometimes vindictive) feats accomplished by crows in order to break down common misconceptions about avian intelligence. John Marzluff, Ph.D., is the James W. Ridgeway Professor of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington. His research has been the focus of articles in the New York Times, National Geographic, Audubon, Boys Life, The Seattle Times, and National Wildlife. PBS's NATURE featured his raven research in its production, "Ravens," and his crow research in the film documentary, "A Murder of Crows". His graduate and initial post-doctoral research focused on the social behavior and ecology of jays and ravens. He was especially interested in communication, social organization, and foraging behavior. His current research brings this behavioral approach to pressing conservation issues including raptor management, management of pest species, and assessment of nest predation. His book, In the Company of Crows and Ravens (with Tony Angell, 2005 Yale U. Press) blends biology, conservation, and anthropology to suggest that human and crow cultures have co-evolved. This book won the 2006 Washington State Book Award for general nonfiction. With his wife, Colleen, he has published Dog Days, Raven Nights (2011 Yale University Press), which combines reflection with biology and the recreational pursuit of dog sledding to show how a life in science blooms. Gifts of the Crow (2012 Free Press) applies a neurobiological perspective to understand the amazing feats of corvids. He is a member of the board of editors for Acta Ornithologica, Landscape Ecology and Ecological Applications. Currently leader of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Recovery Team for the critically endangered Mariana Crow, he is also a Fellow of the American Ornithologist's Union. Why submit your preprint to PCI?

01:11
Why submit your preprint to Peer Community In ?

Thanks to original content developers. Link- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page Caenorhabditis elegans /ˌseɪnɵræbˈdɪtɪs ˈɛlɛɡænz/ is a free-living (non-sessile), transparent nematode (roundworm), about 1 mm in length,[2] that lives in temperate soil environments. The name is a blend of Greek (caeno- - recent, rhabditis - rod-like)[3] and Latin (elegans - elegant). In 1900, Maupas initially named it Rhabditides elegans, Osche placed it in the subgenus Caenorhabditis in 1952, and Dougherty raised it to generic status in 1955.[4] In 1974, Sydney Brenner began research into the molecular and developmental biology of C. elegans, which has since been extensively used as a model organism.[5] C. elegans was the first multicellular organism to have its genome completely sequenced.

The Ecology of Leadership and Change

12:21
Sample video from David K. Hurst who uses ecological analogies to explore organizations as complex adaptive systems. I am a speaker, writer and management educator, who helps managers and organizations learn from their past, understand the present and create their future. As a reflective practitioner, I have a unique niche in the field. I spent twenty-five years working in corporations in several countries in a series of organizational “train wrecks” as the Western World began its radical transition from the industrial era to the age of knowledge and information. I extracted from my experience some highly innovative ideas about leadership, the management of change and the dynamics of organizations that promote creativity and learning. I have spent another two decades honing my thinking as a consultant and teacher. I communicate these ideas to audiences around the world in the form of creative presentations, in-depth seminars and management development programs. My articles have been published in leading business publications such as the Financial Times, Globe and Mail, Harvard Business Review, Strategy+Business, and several academic journals. My first book, Crisis & Renewal: Meeting the Challenge of Organizational Change, was published by the Harvard Business School Press in 1995 and was reprinted in paperback in 2002. The second book, Learning from the Links: Mastering Management Using Lessons From Golf (The Free Press 2002) broke new ground in understanding what it takes to create excellence through practice. My third book, The New Ecology of Leadership: Business Mastery in a Chaotic World (Columbia University Press 2012), is an extraordinary integration of management thought and practice from a systems perspective. Its objective is to help readers make meaning from their own management experience and education and thus to improve their practical judgment and wisdom – to ask better questions of reality and tell more compelling stories about it. The result is an inspirational synthesis of management thought and practice that will resonate with every reader’s experience. My website is at www.davidkhurst.com
