http://economicsdetective.com/ The typical first-year student walks into his first economics class with very little idea of what economics is. He might have heard something like, "economics is the study of money", or "economics is another word for accounting", or "economics is hard, don't take that class", but none of those are true. "Economics is the study of the use of scarce resources that have alternative uses." That's the classic definition of economics. Basically, there are people, and people need resources to fulfil their desires. These resources cannot be infinite, but the desires can be, so people need to make choices about how to use their scarce resources. Economists study these choices. All economic questions fall into one of two categories: positive and normative. Positive economics describes "what is" and normative economics argues for what ought to be, so a question like, "why do people use money?" is a positive question and "should people use money?" is a normative question. A general rule of thumb is that if your economic model has no value judgements, it's positive economics, and if it does have value judgements it's normative economics, since to tell someone what he ought to do, you first have to judge what is best for him. Economics is also divided into microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics studies the behaviour of individual agents and markets, while macroeconomics studies the behaviour of the entire economy. Economists also have their own branch of statistics called "econometrics" that's specialized to analyzing economic data. Since economic data usually comes from the real world, and not from controlled experiments, econometrics faces mathematical challenges that other fields might not. The tools economists have developed to study human behaviour have broad uses outside of what we would traditionally consider economics. Economists study not only markets, but things like crime, war, the family, religion, culture, politics, law, and even genetics. That's why it's not unusual to see papers by psychologists, sociologists, criminologists, political scientists, anthropologists, biologists, neuroscientists, or legal scholars being co-authored by economists.

005 - Water Resources In this video Paul Andersen explains how water is unequally distributed around the globe through the hydrologic cycles. Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. Freshwater is divided between surface water and groundwater but must me stored and moved for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Subsidized low cost water has created a problem with water conservation but economic changes could help solve the problem. Do you speak another language? On today’s episode...CATS. Also: Hank talks about some philosophy stuff, like a few of the key concepts philosophers use when discussing belief and knowledge, such as what defines an assertion and a proposition, and that belief is a kind of propositional attitude. Hank also discusses forms of justification and the traditional definition of knowledge, which Edmund Gettier just totally messed with, using his Gettier cases. Many thanks to Index the cat for his patience in the filming of this episode. -- PBS Digital Studios wants to get to know you better! [Title] Evaluating Resources: Digging Deeper Once you have determined that a resource may be helpful because it relates to your topic and meets your assignment’s requirements for length, resource type, and so on, you need to dig deeper and evaluate the actual content of the resource. You want to use high-quality information because excellent resources lead to better assignments. Here are some questions to consider when determining the quality of a resource, whether it’s an article, a book, a video, a web resource, or any electronic equivalent. Look at the authors. Does their educational background fit the subject area of the resource? Are they qualified to write in this field? For example, doctors and nurses are qualified to publish in medical or nursing journals, while others may not be. Look at the publisher. An authoritative or respected publisher is often referred to as academic or scholarly. This shows a level of confidence in their published information, study results, and data. Books, journals, and web resources may be published by an academic institution such as the University of Toronto, or by a well-known academic publisher like Sage. Some journals contain peer-reviewed articles. That means that they have undergone a rigorous scholarly review process prior to publication. Look at the intended audience for the resource. For whom has it been written? Is it written for the general public, for a professional in the field, or for an academic researcher? Clues can be found in the language used: Is it conversational or is it technical? Is the language specific to a field or discipline? Consider why something has been published. Has it been written to inform or to entertain a wide audience? Has it been written by professionals in a field for those working in the field? For example, has it been written for people working in graphic design, the golf industry, computer programming, the tourism industry, or early childhood education? Has it been written to present research in an academic context? Consider the question of bias. Every article is written from the author’s point of view. You should be able to tell if the information is based mainly on the author’s opinion or if it’s based on facts or research. Is the author fairly presenting both sides of an argument or promoting only one side of the discussion? Is he or she showing prejudice against an idea or group? It’s important that you use multiple resources that provide a balanced and well-supported foundation for your topic. Considering all of these questions while gathering your resources will help to ensure that you produce a high-quality result.

Maybe I came across as if I hated this book in my previous video, but is a genuinely good for beginners. Just don’t take everything in it literally, or work with the exercises. Bert Dodson’s book Keys to Drawing is also a good beginner book, that covers similar areas, it has more exercises, but I think Drawing on the Right side of the brain has more blunt and clear exercises that get straight to the point. Color: “Color & Light” by James Gurney A very popular book that goes into the properties color, value, light, and what to look for when setting up a scene. Perspective: “Perspective Made Easy” or “How to Draw: Drawing and Sketching objects and environments from your imagination”, by Scott Robertson. Perspective Made Easy is an old book that’s very blunt and simple. And a lot of people tend to recommend the book How to Draw by Scott Robertson, but whenever someone recommends it, I’ve asked them, did you ever finish the book, and so far I haven’t met anyone who has. Don’t get me wrong this is a good book, but this is a book oriented towards industrial design, and it has a lot of good exercises and practice, but sometimes it gets overwhelmingly mathematical, and if your goal isn’t industrial design you could find more blunt and simpler ways to learn it in other places, like online. (Thomas Romain on perspective: http://imgur.com/gallery/V5Prm). Figures & Gesture “Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators” by Michael D. Mattesi And “The Vilppu Drawing Manual” by Glenn Vilppu Both of these guys have worked as traditional animators. Force Dynamic LIfe is a great introduction to gesture drawing and figure drawing and just how important it is to show gesture and force in a drawing. If I remember correctly it goes how knowing good gesture is more important than knowing good anatomy, and you know what, maybe that’s right. The Vilppu Drawing Manual is a really, really good book that blends figure drawing with perceiving 3d shapes, however I think it’s really hard or impossible to get a physical copy at this moment. But who knows, maybe someday it will return. General Drawing/Painting “Alla Prima” by Richard Schmid As of right now I haven’t finished this book yet, but it’s really good so far. A lot of general points about painting that might seem simple until someone puts it into words, and a lot of experienced thoughts regarding the process. “The Practice and Science of Drawing” by Harold Speed This is a bit thorough and probably hard-to-read for a lot of people since it’s a bit old. It has a lot of good points though. Think clearly about what you’re doing. Be mindful of every stroke. Composition: 3. Framed Ink by Marcos Mateu-Mestre I really like this book, it might seem aimed towards comic books and graphic novels, but it’s a lot of great stuff on composition and how to lead the viewer’s eye from one point to the next, and general things you might’ve never thought of before to make composition more clear. Motivational. 2. Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon A very quick and simple book that talks about getting ideas, inspiration and dealing with creativity. 1. The Art Spirit by Robert Henri This is a series of letters to his art students from Harold Speed compiled into a book, but it’s oddly inspiring. A lot of thoughts and beliefs on what it means to be an artist.

General Stephane Abrial, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, told reporters during a NATO conference in Serbia that "the Libyan crisis came as a surprise to everybody here." "Serbia is the key actor of regional security and stability in the Western Balkans. Deepening Serbia Nato relations will benefit the entire region, and the fact that Serbia wishes to remain neutral should not prevent us from cooperating," Abrial said. Other points being discussed in this video are the available options when adding resources to a task. These options are "reduce duration but keep the same amount of work," "increase the amount of work but keep the same duration," and "reduce the hours resources work per day (units), but keep the same duration and work." Now that you know how to assign resources to tasks the next thing we need to move on to is producing a workable schedule given the resources that are available. In order to do that there are a couple of fundamental things that you need to understand. And perhaps the most important thing to understand with Project 2016 is the different task types that can be involved in projects. Now in order to illustrate this I’m using a sort of dummy project, just a very simple project with three tasks in it, A, B, and C. Currently they’re each two day tasks and a resource, Jane, is working on those tasks. And Jane is working for eight hours a day. So on task A Jane is doing 16 hours work, task B 16 hours work, C 16 hours work and so on. Now let’s suppose that I provide Jane with some help. I say, “Jane, John is going to help you.” If I assign John to task A what do you think would happen? Now what may happen is you may look at it and say well obviously Jane is going to be able to get that job done in half the time. So instead of being a two day task it’s going to be a one day task. And obviously that is one option. But there are a couple of other options as well. One other option is that if John works on that task as well it will still take two days but they will do 32 hours work during that time. So with twice as much resource twice as much work gets done but in the same time. Another possibility is that we still want to get our 16 hours of work done and we still want to do it in two days but the fact that we’ve got both Jane and John working on it means that they only each need to devote half their time to it. So we effectively have three options. And those three options correspond to the three options you saw in the previous section when Project 2016 said you’ve changed information about resourcing on a task. Which of these three options would you like to use when you apply that additional resource? Now let me just show you that again. I’m going to now right click on task A. I’m going to click on Assign Resources. I’m going to choose John and I’m going to say Assign. Now notice the little warning sign on the left there. Now note that Project has assumed that in assigning John I still want to spend two days on this task but by having that second person we’re getting twice as much work done. So let’s go over to that warning sign, click on the dropdown. The default option there, the middle one, Increase the amount of work but keep the same duration. The first one was, Reduce the duration but keep the same amount of work. So in that case we would have said well we’re still going to do 16 hours work but because we’ve got two people on it we can do it in a day. The third option, Reduce the hours resources worked per day, the units, but keep the same duration and work. So we say it’s still a two day task. It’s still only going to be 16 hours work but Jane and John only need to work half the time each. Sorry, we couldn't fit the entire video transcription here since YouTube only allows 5000 characters.

Try Albion Online: https://albiononline.com/?ref=TASSEXAPA6 Albion Online is a game that is currently in beta and that I've been playing quite a bit. In this video I go over the player drive economy, gathering and crafting, where resources come from and how it affects the Destiny Board. Besides that we go on a run to a PvP zone where we have some rarer resources, at the risk of getting killed by other players. In general, higher level zones have better resources that you can gather with your tools. It does promote exploring the world and taking risks. The game does cover full PvP, which means that when you die you lose everything you have on you. The market place is another way to get resources, but you will need silver in order to make purchases. This video is a paid promotion. Albion Online is a free-to-play medieval sandbox MMORPG. Albion Online is also one of the first MMO's that can truly be played cross-platform from tablets to Linux to internet browsers. The game focuses on crafting and player driven economy, constant PvP combat as well as full loot. -- http://lowko.tv http://twitter.com/lowkotv http://facebook.com/lowkotv http://google.com/+lowkotv http://instagram.com/lowkotv http://twitch.tv/lowkotv

In an exclusive interview with London South East, Ascent Resources CEO Colin Hutchinson talked through the latest RNS's to be released by the Slovenian gas producer. Having expected a processing plant permit to be agreed last week he was shocked to learn that the new Slovenian Environment Minister Mr Leben had instead instigated an internal review. "I had hoped the permit would be a catalyst to move the strategic review forward. I think that part of the reason for calling a General Meeting and asking shareholders to give us the ability to continue independently should that be needed means we are not going to take a silly offer." In a General Meeting to be held on the morning of 20th November, 2018, Ascent Resources are looking for the authority to issue up to 340 million shares and so to raise up to 1.5 Million pounds should they need to so so in the future. "Without the ability to walk away when negotiating we are in a much weaker position," said Colin Hutchinson. The option to go to an EU court would be a 'last resort' as everyone would prefer to resolve things amicably, but 'if we did feel that they [the Slovenian Government] weren't treating foreign capital in the same way that domestic capital is treated then we would need to pursue all options.'

General or family practice physicians often see it all. They suture wounds, treat rashes, set broken bones and tend to the needs of patients who, in rural areas, might well have been kicked by a mule or fallen off a tractor. Ferdinand Velasco, M.D., the chief medical information officer for Texas Health Resources, explains that one great advantage of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) is that it can allow physicians in rural markets vastly improved access to the skills of specialists found in major cities. Real-time access to the exact same information means that a general practitioner in a rural office can quickly and efficiently consult with a specialist who is miles and miles away. The EHR makes it happen. Who says that country cousins can't get big-city health care? Electronic Health Records: One more reason Texas Health Resources is leading the way. I'm Rebecca from engVid. Today I'm especially excited to welcome you to a new series that I've created called: "How to Speak like a Manager". In this series you will learn how to take general English and upgrade it to business English. Okay? And we'll be doing that by looking at different verbs that you can use, adjectives, nouns, and so on. Okay? But today in this lesson we will be focusing on eight verbs. But you might be asking: "Only eight verbs and I can become a manager?" Well, yes. "Why?" Because I'm going to show you how these eight verbs, to start with, can actually be used in hundreds of ways, in different collocations or combinations of words, so therefore you'll be able to use them in all kinds of situations. Definitely in professional situations, but also in social situations or personal situations. Okay? So, let's start right now. Okay. So let's suppose what you want to say in general English or regular English is something like this: "I need to find out what's wrong." Okay? Now, on this side is all the regular English or the general English. Okay? And on this side we're going to express the same idea, but in higher English, in more advanced business English or more professional English. And you're going to help me because I didn't write the word in yet. You're going to help me because perhaps you already know some of these words, but even if you know them you might not realize how many different ways we can actually use those same words, and that's what I want you to be able to do. Okay? So suppose your idea in your mind is that: "I need to find out what's wrong." So how can we say that in more professional English? "I need to", the verb starts with "i": "I need to _______ the problem. I need to identify the problem." Okay? So, our first word today is "identify". Say it after me: "identify the problem". Good. Now, suppose the idea you're trying to convey is: "I need to fix the problem." Okay? "Fix" is a very ordinary word, so what better word could we use here? "I need to _______ the issue or the issues. I need to", you might know this word. "I need to resolve", okay? So, "resolve" is just like "solve", but usually we say: "Solve the problem", but we might say: "Resolve the issue". And "resolve" is an even higher, more advanced word. And the higher vocabulary that you use, the more professional you will sound. Okay? And that's what our goal is. Right? Okay, next: "I need to give people confidence." So what's a good word or verb for that? "To give somebody confidence" is to, something starts with "m": "I need to _______ my employees. I need to..." Do you know this word? I'm sure you've heard it. "Motivate". Okay? Say it after me: "Motivate" or "motivate". You can say the "t"; sometimes it's easier and clearer for people to understand you when you say the "t". So let's say the "t" now: "Motivate. I need to motivate my employees" or: "I need to motivate my employees." Okay? Instead of saying: "I need to give people confidence", because you see that all the verbs here are very ordinary, everyday verbs, and those are higher-level verbs. Next: "I need to give clients my attention." Again, we have a very weak verb here, so how can you say that: "I need to give my attention to my clients or give clients my attention"? The word... The verb starts with "f": "I need to _______ on our clients." What's the verb? Do you know it? "I need to focus", okay? Say it after me: "Focus". Be careful how you pronounce this word because otherwise it can sound improper. All right? "I need to focus on our clients." Sounds a lot better than saying: "I need to give my attention to my clients." Okay? "I need to focus". Next: "I need to spend as little as possible". "Spend as little" means spend as little money. So what's one word that captures that idea, to spend as little as possible? It starts with "m": "I need to _______ our expenses or our costs." Do you know what it is? Okay? So the word is "minimize". But let’s switch back to Gantt Chart View using the button towards the right hand end of the Status Bar. And I’m going to choose one of the tasks and assign resources to it. Select Agree budget and approach, right click, and click Assign Resources. Now that brings up the Assign Resources dialogue. And in the dialogue you can see a list of the available resources. Later on in the course we’ll look at the fact that as the number of resources available in a project grows you may need to filter this list in order to find a particular resource or resources that you need. But at the moment we’ve got such a short list of resources that it’s easy to find the one that we want to assign. I’m going to assign the bride and groom to this task. I’m going to work on the principle that the bride and groom are arranging this wedding themselves. I appreciate that in many situations it will perhaps be family members or other relations or friends that will be doing some or all of the organizing. But I’m trying to make this not too complicated. To assign a resource all I need to do is to select that resource, in this case the bride is already selected and then click on Assign. Now when I assign a resource to a task like that it doesn’t automatically close the Assign Resources dialogue. You note there a separate Close button. But what you can see if first of all the number of units. Well 100% represents one bride. So there’s one bride attached to that task which is just as well really because we only have one bride available. And the cost of the bride working on that task is zero. Don’t forget that the rate for the bride chargeable to this project is $0 per hour. So if she’s working on that task for ten days then she’s still not going to charge us any money for doing it. Now one very important point I’d like you to bear in mind here and this is going to become increasingly important later in the course. Is that the 100% means that the bride is working on this task fulltime. Now in reality it may well be that she is not working fulltime and that she’s actually doing her day job most of the time and she’s just spending a certain amount of time working on, in this case, the budget and approach to her wedding. But for the purposes of this particular project and this will not be the case for the bathroom refit, but for the purposes of this project all I’m going to do is treat that 100% as being all of the time that she has available. That doesn’t mean to say it’s a 40 hour week or an eight hour day or anything else. It just means that all of the time she’s got available she is going to spend on that task while that task is in progress. Now fortunately while that task is in progress she doesn’t actually have any other tasks on the wedding so she can spend all of her time on it. About this presentation In this in-depth talk, ethnographer and leadership expert Simon Sinek reveals the hidden dynamics that inspire leadership and trust. In biological terms, leaders get the first pick of food and other spoils, but at a cost. When danger is present, the group expects the leader to mitigate all threats even at the expense of their personal well-being. Understanding this deep-seated expectation is the key difference between someone who is just an "authority" versus a true "leader." For more on this topic, check out Sinek's latest book Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't now available for pre-order. About Simon Sinek A trained ethnographer and the author of Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, Simon Sinek has held a life-long curiosity for why people and organizations do the things they do. Studying the leaders and companies that make the greatest impact in the world and achieve a more lasting success than others, he discovered the formula that explains how they do it. Sinek's amazingly simple idea, The Golden Circle, is grounded in the biology of human decision-making and is changing how leaders and companies think and act. His innovative views on business and leadership have earned him invitations to meet with an array of leaders and organizations, including Microsoft, Dell, SAP, Intel, Chanel, Members of the United States Congress, and the Ambassadors of Bahrain and Iraq. Sinek recently became an adjunct staff member of the RAND Corporation, one of the most highly regarded think tanks in the world. He also works with the non-profit Education for Employment Foundation to help create opportunities for young men and women in the Middle East region. He lives in New York, where he teaches graduate level strategic communications at Columbia University. Winter months are upon us, which means colder temperatures lead to cold cranking issues. Typically cold cranking issues are due to one of three factors: oil viscosity, the state of the starter main cables or the health of the batteries. Unfortunately, sometimes these factors, especially oil viscosity, are overlooked or even ignored. Let’s look at each one and what you can do. --- http://delcoremy.com --- The first factor is oil viscosity. Switching to a lower viscosity oil during the winter season offers benefits like an easier engine start, faster engine lubrication, and less energy consumption at engine start. The next factor that impacts reliable cold cranking is the state of the starter main cables. Ideally, before the winter months, check cables for loose connections and corrosion. Both can increase circuit resistance and lead to slower cranking speeds. Batteries are the last factor to understand. Healthy batteries are important for reliable cold cranking. That’s because batteries with a low state of charge will not only cause a loss of cranking speed but also a loss of available cranking time. The significant importance of natural resources to the economic development of Ghana, and more importantly the country’s dependence on raw natural resources is gradually placing the management of Ghana’s Petroleum resource at the center stage in this year’s general election debates. In line with this, the Natural Resource Governance Institute, NRGI, with support from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance has created a platform for four political parties to debate on their governance proposal for the oil and gas sector in Takoradi. Four parties with representation in parliament with the exception of NPP which didn’t show up, namely the CPP, NDC and PNC took turns to make panel presentations before a cross section of Civil Society Organizations and the media on transparency, disclosure of beneficial owners, local participation and others.
