Why is travel literature so interesting?

18:53
In a now globalized and increasingly connected world, where we can collect information about unknown places without having to open a book, travel literature could easily pass for an endangered species in the literary landscape. Yet, despite the concurrence of Internet and the ever-growing importance of major literary genres (such as the novel or the autobiography for instance), travel literature stands the test of time -- both in terms of popularity and critical importance. This talk takes the case of modern and contemporary French Travel Literature to present a few reasons why travel literature is so resilient to change, and why studying travel literature matters more than ever. AllMusic Song Analysis - DS4100 Final Project

08:16
For my project, I analyzed data scraped from ‘allmusic.com’, a website that houses countless amounts of data regarding music releases, genres, articles and more. Using this data, I was able to predict song length based on certain attributes of a song. These attributes include AllMusic ratings, album length, genre, year of release, artist/band and etc. I used a linear regression model to predict this aspect. The data I collected was stored on couchdb. I was able to code most of the project in Python, but due to some installation complications (for the statsmodels package in Python specifically), I was unable to do the modeling in Python and thus ended up doing so in R.

How and Why We Read: Crash Course English Literature #1

07:00
In which John Green kicks off the Crash Course Literature mini series with a reasonable set of questions. Why do we read? What's the point of reading critically. John will argue that reading is about effectively communicating with other people. Unlike a direct communication though, the writer has to communicate with a stranger, through time and space, with only "dry dead words on a page." So how's that going to work? Find out with Crash Course Literature! Also, readers are empowered during the open letter, so that's pretty cool. The Reading List! 20 Things You Didn't Know About Bad Bunny

12:39
If you speak Spanish or English, you probably have heard of the Latin trap wonder that is Bad Bunny. Also known as “el Conejo Malo,” this Puerto Rican-born star is taking the world by a storm with his lovelorn rap lyrics spanning multiple genres. Some have called him the next big thing in trap music and others have gone as far as to say he's paving the way like no other Latin artist has ever done before. Either way, he's making moves in the industry and he's showing no sign of slowing down. But while you might have heard his tracks on SoundCloud or YouTube, you might not have heard them on the radio before. In fact, we'd probably go as far as to say you've never heard the majority of them on the radio. And there's a very good reason for that - but you'll have to watch the video to find out why. But it appears that Bad Bunny didn't need the airwaves to launch his sound because his voice has been heard by billions of people regardless. However, while you'll hear his tunes and listen to his collaborations with other artists, you might struggle to find out much more about this trap artist’s personal life. Unlike many celebrities, he likes to keep his private life to himself, so you won't see him releasing diss tracks or ranting on his Instagram stories. In fact, it's difficult to find out much about Bad Bunny other than what he wants you to know. So from rumors of an ex-girlfriend, to his musical influences and how he started his career in the music industry, here are 20 Things You Didn't Know About Bad Bunny. Patsy Cline - Crazy

02:46
Patsy Cline - Crazy Virginia Patterson Hensley (September 8, 1932 – March 5, 1963), known professionally as Patsy Cline, was an American singer. Part of the early 1960s Nashville sound, Cline successfully "crossed over" to pop music and was one of the most influential, successful and acclaimed vocalists of the 20th century. She died at the age of 30 in a multiple-fatality crash in the private plane of her manager, Randy Hughes. Cline was best known for her rich tone, emotionally expressive and bold contralto voice and her role as a country music industry pioneer. Along with Kitty Wells, she helped pave the way for women as headline performers in the genre. Cline was cited as an inspiration by singers in several genres. Books, movies, documentaries, articles and stage plays document her life and career. Her hits began in 1957 with Donn Hecht's and Alan Block's "Walkin' After Midnight", Hank Cochran's and Harlan Howard's "I Fall to Pieces", Hank Cochran's "She's Got You", Willie Nelson's "Crazy" and ended in 1963 with Don Gibson's "Sweet Dreams". Millions of her records have sold since her death. She won awards and accolades, leading many to view her as an icon at the level of Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Ten years after her death, in 1973, she became the first female solo artist inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1999, she was voted number 11 on VH1's special, The 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll, by members and artists of the rock industry. In 2002, country music artists and industry members voted her Number One on CMT's The 40 Greatest Women of Country Music and ranked 46th in the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time" issue of Rolling Stone magazine. According to her 1973 Country Music Hall of Fame plaque, "Her heritage of timeless recordings is testimony to her artistic capacity."

bell hooks + Jill Soloway - Ending Domination: The Personal is Political I The New School

01:32:38
The early feminist movement was dedicated to the proposition that the personal is political—an insight that has come to be increasingly mocked and ridiculed. In their careers, renowned scholar, poet, and author bell hooks and Emmy-winning television writer and creator of Transparent Jill Soloway have countered this trend, making strong use of the autobiographical to generate critical discourse and awareness of injustice. In this conversation, hooks and Soloway discuss their excavations of the personal and its politics, and how this search strengthens liberation efforts rather than diminish them. About the speakers: For more than three decades, bell hooks (née Gloria Watkins) has been recognized internationally as a scholar, poet, author, and radical thinker. The dozens of books and articles she has published span several genres, including cultural and political analyses and critiques, personal memoirs, poetry collections, and children's books. Her writings cover topics of gender, race, class, spirituality, teaching, and the significance of media in contemporary culture. Jill Soloway is an American comedian, playwright, feminist, Emmy-winning television writer, and award-winning director known for creating, writing, executive producing, and directing the Amazon original series Transparent.
