When do fractional differential equations have solutions bounded by the Mittag Leffler function? New research into this question! http://www.degruyter.com/view/j/fca.2015.18.issue-3/fca-2015-0039/fca-2015-0039.xml?format=INT Fract. Calc. Appl. Anal. 18, no. 3 (2015), 642-650. DOI: 10.1515/fca-2015-0039 When do fractional differential equations have solutions on the half line that are bounded by the Mittag–Leffler function? This work answers the above question through fixed–point methods, providing a deeper understanding of the long term growth behaviour of solutions, in addition to advancing our knowledge on the existence and uniqueness of solutions. Motivated by the above, this work answers the question posed at the start of this section through a strategic analysis and application of complete metric spaces and fixed–point theory. In particular, a novel metric is introduced that involves the Mittag–Leffler function. When coupled with the “Mittag–Leffler bounded” space of continuous functions on the half–line, we show that the pair forms a complete metric space. We then formulate sufficient conditions under which an integral problem that is equivalent to our problem will admit a unique solution. This is achieved via an application of the contraction mapping theorem of Stefan Banach.

Differential Equations, Lecture 8.2: Linearization and steady-state analysis. In this lecture, we consider Lotka-Volterra equations from population dynamics and find their steady-states. Then, at each one, we change variables and "linearize" it, which finds the approximate linear system in the neighborhood of each steady-state. From these, we can piece together the qualitative behavior of the phase space of the nonlinear system. It turns out that there are four possibilities: two corresponding to one species always out-competing the other, one where they co-exist, and another where one always wins but it depends on the initial condition. A flow on a smooth manifold is a suitably smooth group homomorphism from the additive group of real numbers to the group of diffeomorphisms of that manifold (Lie groups were not discussed in a video but were discussed in the notes). Associated to every flow is a vector field that is the infinitesimal generator of that flow. This is part of a series of lectures on Mathematical Analysis II. Topics covered include continuous and differentiable multi-variable functions on Euclidean space, the chain rule, the implicit function theorem, manifolds, tangent spaces, vector fields, the degree and index of a smooth map, the Euler characteristic, metric spaces, the contraction mapping theorem, existence and uniqueness of solutions to ordinary differential equations, and integral equations.
