Although a 350mA LED could easily earn the stamp of "high power" a few years ago, now, 5A to 40A LEDs and laser diodes are used in the DLP projector, surgical equipment, stage lighting, automotive lighting and other applications traditionally served by high intensity bulbs. To meet the light output requirements of these applications, high power LEDs are often used in series. The problem is that several series-connected LEDs require a high voltage LED driver circuit. LED driver design is further complicated by many applications that require fast LED current response to pulse width modulated (PWM) dimming signals. The new LT®3763 (http://www.linear.com/product/LT3763) is a 60V synchronous, step-down DC/DC controller designed to accurately regulate LED current at up to 20A with fast PWM dimming. It is a higher voltage version of its predecessors, the LT3743 and the LT3741. In addition to higher voltage, the LT3763 has 4 regulation loops that make it easy to design highly efficient, versatile and robust circuits.

High side current sense resistor connected to instrumentation amplifier built from three opamps , amplifier provides about twice voltage across r sense. ?. feeds into op amp comparator with adjustable voltage think 12 volts or maybe five volts. Anyway when current limit reached opamp pulls voltage opamp down towards ground. Diode included stop current op amp from driiving voltage up and prevent oscillations I guess . Small bulb included to give indication entered current limiting. Also can see constant current sink using irlz 44 n channel mosfet , op amp here is running off unregulated five volts. Darlington can get warm. Resistors are each 10 ohm 7 watt rated. Designs not too bad really.

В итоге получим максимальный срок службы LED. Регулировал через StepUP (Повышающий) преобразователь. Параметры используемых светодиодов 32V 300mA. I bought some green laser pointers on eBay recently and I have to say I was pretty disappointed with the lasers. Half of the laser pointers didn’t even turn on, and the ones that did work were very dim and covered in dents. I decided I should try opening them up and try to make them stronger. I started with the classic “pot mod” by cranking up the potentiometer on the driver. It made the laser brighter but it still couldn’t burn stuff. I scrapped the driver and hooked it directly to my variable PSU but that killed the laser almost immediately. I realized that I needed cutting edge laser technology in order to satisfy my extreme desires. I settled on using the Nichia NDG7475 laser diode as that is the brightest laser pointer out there that is still small enough to be jammed into a laser pointer housing. I hooked it up to a high efficiency buck converter for current regulation. I used a MOSFET as the main switching component as the stock switch in the laser pointer would not have handled the high current demands on the laser diode. I also used high drain 10440 li-ion batteries as the thought of 2 AAA batteries powering this new circuit is laughable. The modded laser pointer is awesome. In fact it is probably the brightest laser pointer in the entire world if your definition of a laser pointer is a laser that fits in a 2x AAA host. I test out its burning capabilities by pointing the laser at a bunch of stuff. Sometimes I don’t even know why I build crazy stuff like this. Song towards end of vid: town of 24 bars - Unicorn Heads

This thing is huge and bright. It runs at around 12V, but has no integrated current regulation. This means that if connected directly in a vehicle application the current could be very high and the voltage drop across the supply cable will be a factor in limiting the current. The circuitry is basically four large parallel arrays of LEDs connected in series to make up roughly 12V combined forward voltage. I did some voltage/current tests as follows:- 10V 7mA 70mW 10.5V 170mA 1.8W 11V 790mA 8.7W 11.5V 1.72A 19.8W 12V 2.85A 34W 12.5V 4.2A 52W 12.8V 5.2A 66W Current Limit of bench supply. As you can see form the voltage to current ratio the current increases significantly with a small voltage change. Features : Output : Adjustable (1.2 V to 37 V) Output Current : 1.5 A Load Regulation : 0.5 % Input Voltage MAX : 40 V Line Regulation : 0.04 % / V Maximum Operating Temperature : + 125 C Mounting Style : Through Hole Package / Case : TO-220 Linear Voltage Regulators are low-efficiency compared to switching mode regulators, which came around in the late 60s. If you know what a voltage divider with resistors does, imagine one of those resistors is a transistor, which is biased by how far off the output is to that desired. Pretty simple. Because all the load current has to flow through them, the greater the difference between the input & output voltage, the more heat needs to be dissipated, which is why they are larger, have heat sinks, etc. ("Without a heat sink with an ambient temperature at 50 ⁰C such as on a hot summer day inside a box, a maximum power dissipation of (TJ-TA)/RθJA = ((125-50)/80) = 0.98 W can be permitted. (A piece of shiny sheet metal of Aluminum with the dimensions 6 x 6 cm and 1.5 mm thick, results in a thermal resistance that permits 4.7 W of heat dissipation." ~ wikipedia link below). Also 0.04%/V regulation accuracy is pretty tight. Efficiencies can be compared to their switching mode counterparts in terms of expected efficiencies. With Linear Regulators, efficiency is a linear measure of the ratio between input and output voltages, where: Vout/Vin ratio is 0.1 = 10% efficiency Vout/Vin ratio is 0.5 = 50% efficiency Vout/Vin ratio is 0.9 = 90% efficiency [See this article for the chart, application circuits, etc.: http://cds.linear.com/docs/en/application-note/AN140fa.pdf] Q: Why would you ever use one of these over a switching regulator? "Applications Where Linear Regulators Are Preferable There are many applications in which linear regulators or LDOs provide superior solutions to switching supplies, including: 1. Simple/low cost solutions 2. Low noise/low ripple applications 3. Fast transient applications 4. Low dropout applications" There is no oscillator switching the output on & off, requiring large capacitance to try to smooth out the ripple. There is nothing _causing_ ripple-just like in a resistor divider. I'm having a h*ll of a time with radio clones of chips like the nRF24L01+ that are notoriously sensitive to noise on their DCin, and I hope to create some bench/lab tests to compare this chip to the 7805, 1117, and other bench supplies I've made here. Will the cleanest regulation I can do at the component level help? Couldn't hurt! :) If you just want to go from 37vdc to 3.3vdc, use a switching mode regulator, as they will run cool at typically over 95% efficiency (less efficiency = heat (I2R) loss). Robert Dobkin, Vice President of Engineering & CTO This video explores the LT3086 (http://www.linear.com/3086), a new member of our LDO+ family. It provides many functions in addition to regulation. It can monitor and externally limit both temperature and output current, has an accurate power good output, and can compensate for wire drops between the regulator and the load. It sources up to 2.1A of output current and devices can be paralleled to obtain higher output current. The output voltage is set with a single resistor and it is it internally protected against reverse supplies. The current source reference provides constant bandwidth and regulation independent of output voltage.

DC Current PWM-Controller. Circuit Engineering. Pulse-width modulation is a method of voltage control that today is used quite extensively. PWM-signals are for the most part used to control motors and pulse power supply units. This purpose is served by a number of control circuits: transistors, special microcircuitry, digital signal processors. As a rule, a transistor, often a FET, is used to control the generated PWM-signal. Widely popular are the width-pulse circuits that control powerful field-effect transistors - MOSFETs. These transistors are capable of switching high current of up to 100A and above at the gate voltage of 12-15V. The on-state transistor resistance is very low, which decreases the dissipated power. Control circuits are supposed to provide for at least 12V-15V difference between the gate and the source. In some cases, PWM-controllers employ microchips with output voltage build-up of up to 25-30V at 8-14V supply voltage, which facilitates connection of the transistor in the circuit with the common drain. For the majority of loads with current consumption of below 10A the circuits do not have an additional voltage build-up unit. Let's look at an example of PWM-controller using a simple circuit based on the logical CMOS microchip inverters. The device is a square-wave generator based on two logical components, where the diodes separately change the electric charge time constant and the electric discharge time constant of the capacitor that sets the frequency. It is this property that enables changing the output pulse ratio and the value of the output voltage on the load. The circuit uses an inverting CMOS component K561LN2, a field-effect transistor that should better be applied with peak current, since it has a lower on-state resistance. This helps decrease the dissipated power and use a cooler with a smaller footnote. The main benefit of this circuit is the simplicity of the structure and reliability of operation.

Current Regulator Principles -- Circuit Design BasicsChanges in resistance and input voltages cause instability of current flowing through the load.Let us assume that the load resistance remains unchanged while the input voltage increases. Current flowing through the load increases as well. This will result in higher current flowing through R1 and R2 resistors and higher voltage applied to such resistors. Voltage across the voltage regulator diode will be equal to the sum of voltages applied to R1 and R2 resistors and voltage across the transistor base/emitter junction.Input voltage changes induce no changes in the voltage across the voltage regulator diode. Therefore, voltage applied to the transistor base/emitter junction will decrease and the resistance between transistor emitter/collector outputs will increase.Current across the junction between transistor emitter/collector and the load resistor will decrease i.e. return to its initial value. This is how current is regulated.Let's study a simple direct current regulation circuit based on a field-effect transistor.Load current flows through resistor R1. Current flowing along the series current from the power supply positive terminal through the transistor gate-drain junction, load resistor to the power supply negative terminal is extremely low as the gain-drain junction has a reverse shift. Positive voltage is applied to resistor R1 on the left and negative voltage is on the right. The gate potential is equal to that of resistor right leg. That's why the gate potential in relation to the source becomes negative and the transistor closes to a greater extent. If the transistor closes, the load current will reduce to its initial level.

The LT®3090 is a low noise single resistor programmable negative regulator based upon current reference architecture. The advantage of this architecture is that output voltage is rail-to-rail programmable while always maintaining unity gain operation. Hence, the bandwidth/transient response, noise, PSRR and load regulation are all independent of output voltage. Additionally, the LT3090 features programmable current limit, positive or negative current monitoring, programmable cable drop compensation, bidirectional shutdown capability and can be easily paralleled for higher current operation or heat spreading on surface mounted board. DIY SMPS PWM Idle Voltage and Current Regulation Tests

In my last video I just tested the soft start of the PWM driver. This video is just me testing the idle voltage setpoint/sense and the current setpoint/sense and everything seems to check-out alright. Next test will be to connect the MOSFET/driver modules and run them on lower voltage (70vdc) current-limited DC supply and see how everything works together.

Buck converter vs. linear voltage regulator - practical comparison

In this video I'm comparing in practice a buck converter with LM7805 linear voltage regulator. Two driver boards from old hard drives are used as a dummy load to check efficiency and temperature of the buck converter and linear voltage regulator. I'm presenting pros and cons of both devices. There are 2 mistakes in my calculations: 1. 5:02 - 5:08 - correct calculations should be: (12V - 5V) x 0.42A = 2.94W 2. 5:17 - 5:23 - correct calculations should be: (12V - 5V) x 0.22A = 1.54W I double checked everything, but I should have triple checked.
