Hedge funds intro | Finance & Capital Markets | Khan Academy

Their name comes from the fact that early hedge funds (and some current ones) tried to "hedge" their exposure to the market (so they could, in theory, do well in an "up" or "down" market as long as they were good at picking the good companies). Today, hedge funds represent a huge class investment funds. They are far less regulated than, say, mutual funds. In exchange for this, they aren't allowed to market or take investments from "unsophisticated" investors. Some use their flexibility to mitigate risk, other use it to amplify it. About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. Two Trouble Sectors (w/ Russell Clark) | Interview

01:10:06
Russell Clark of Horseman Capital has been building a short thesis on US shale oil and semiconductor stocks. He thinks that the decline in shale sand efficiency will be a force that drives the oil price higher and put downward pressure on the USD as future foreign investment diverts away from the US to alternative international opportunities. Filmed on October 11, 2018 in London. I think they give something to people that's more interesting and they act very differently to the market. I find the States, contrary to market positioning and recent performance, I find the US very, very troubling and very, very, very problematic. This idea of unstoppable bull market in dollars is actually not true. The shale industry doesn't keep oil prices suppressed. It's actually, I think, about to become something that actually keeps prices high. Hello, I'm Roger from Real Vision. And, today, we're going to interview Russell Clark of Horseman Capital. Many of you may recall we interviewed Russell just over a year ago. Raoul spent some time with him and they discussed a whole range of topics. And it was an interview that was probably one of the ones I enjoyed most from last year covering shale, covering portfolio construction, and what it was like to be a short-seller. So we're here today to catch up on his thoughts, to see where he is on, hopefully, things like shale, see what else he's looking at. What are the main kind of drivers of his thought process at the moment and maybe get a little bit more on how he builds is his portfolios and how he looks at the world. So I'm very excited to be here. I'm looking forward to this interview. And, hopefully, we'll get a lot out of it on those fronts. Russell, welcome back to Real Vision. Thanks for having me. I think it was Summer of 2017 you were last on. And you covered a lot of topics in quite a lot of detail. It was a fascinating interview. There was a couple of pieces of unfinished business which hopefully we'll touch upon later. One of things that resonated with me and with a lot of subscribers was you talked about matching the macro with the micro. I was just wondering, maybe just sort of filling in over the last 18 months, where do you see the macro today and how do you manage the transition in macro over that period? Yeah, it's true. I think when I was talking last time, the area I was starting to really look into was US shale where you have a big disconnect between valuations and cash flow. And what's very typical for me is that you look at something, you build a couple of spreadsheets, doesn't quite fit together, so you leave it you go do something else and you come back and look at it again. And, slowly, you start to build up an idea of how that industry works and how it could go wrong or might go wrong or how it might get better and what you should be doing with it. And it sort of feels-- I think now with having looked at it but also seeing some more data points come out-- it sort of makes a lot more sense to me. It's one of those areas, when you look at it, it's funny how different people from different angles see it completely different. And I've sort of gone to a level where I think I understand why people are like that. I'm happy to talk about more if you'd like.

Best ETFs on Robinhood 2019 (For Millennials) 💚

05:57
The BEST ETFs for Robinhood Investors 2019? All Robinhood investor invest in these top 6 ETF's on the Robinhood Platform. ETFs (index funds) for Robinhood 2019 is the most popular millennial ETF picks for 2019 on Robinhood App. 6) QQQ Coming in at Number 6 is a very popular ETF in general when it comes to Tech stocks. It's no secret that Robinhood investors are mostly millennial, and it's no secret that millennial love tech stocks. And rightfully so - the QQQ has returned investors almost 100% in the last 5 years, and it gives you exposure to some of the biggest tech names like Apple, Google, Microsoft, and more. This ETF tracks the NASDAQ exchange, minus any financial stocks. So how many investors on Robinhood hold QQQ? 13,950. 5) BOTZ So this was a surprising one to me - but when I break it down and think about it, it does make sense. BOTZ is a Robotics & Artificial Intelligence - again - an ETF that is focused around Tech. But the biggest reason Robinhood investors like to hold BOTZ is for exposure to NVDA, because that is seen as one of the main companies to lead AI and Robotics in the future. And since BOTZ ETF currently trades under $20 a share, vs NVDA at almost $150 a share, it makes sense because many RH investors can't afford the price of NVDA. Looking @ BOTZ performance over the last 5 years, it's returned investors just under 30%. Not that great when compared to QQQ, but not bad either. Keep in mind this is an ETF betting on the future - so these gains may only be realized in 5 years or more. So how many investors on Robinhood hold BOTZ? 16,932. 4) VTI The is one of the most popular Vanguard ETF's for investors, but surprisingly it doesn't make the top 3 here at Robinhood! VTI is an ETF that tracks the "Total US Stock Market" as its name implies - so it gives investors exposure to 3514 total stocks! VTI is known as an ETF for the average investor as a "Set and forget" investment -and over the last 5 years has returned investors 45% - not too shabby! So how many investors on Robinhood hold VTI? 23,546. 3) SPY Coming in at #3 is SPY - which tracks the S&P 500. SPY is a popular ETF for traders, because it's extremely liquid and you can trade options on this as well to amplify your gains. It tracks the S&P, so it has just over 500 stocks, and is another 'set and forget' investment. SPY has returned investors slightly more than the VTI fund we just looked at, coming in at 48% returns in the last 5 years. Again, good returns from a set and forget investment however the Management fees are more compared to VTI. So how many investors on Robinhood hold SPY? 32,749. 2) MJ What do millennial like more than tech stocks? That's right - GREEN stocks! The Alternative Harvest ETF takes the 2nd spot and it is made up of some of the most popular stocks in this sector (Cronos (CRON), Aurora Cannabis (ACB) and Canopy Growth (CGC)). This has returned investors just under 40% - however it's only been on the market since late 2015 - so the sample size is a bit shorter than other ETFs covered. Nonetheless, pretty good returns - but this may be topping the list for most volatile ETF in the top 6. So how many investors on Robinhood hold MJ? 35,862. 1) VOO (Watch the video!) The #1 should come as no surprise to you, especially if you've watched my #1 vanguard ETF video. That's right - VOO is the #1 most popular ETF on Robinhood, and rightfully so. This is known as THE best ETF when it comes to tracking the S&P 500 - with it's dividend and low MER. It has returned investors 49% over the last 5 years, coming in as the 2nd best return on this list, only behind the tech heavy QQQ. So how many investors on Robinhood hold VOO? 40,918. #ETF #IndexFunds #Robinhood #PositiveInvesting 🔴 *VIP Membership Group - 67% OFF!* 🔴 View my portfolio & every single trade I make! ETFs are a great way to get exposed to many stocks with one security, and they are usually less volatile than picking single stocks. ETFs are the way to go for investors who want to "set it and forget it". (VUG) VANGUARD GROWTH FUND - This is the single largest holding in my own personal portfoli - Give you exposure to 313 US large cap growth companies that are relatively stable - 1 year ROI = 24.27% vs. 17.93% SP 500 - 5 year ROI = 101.57% vs. 89.06% SP 500 - Top 10 Holdings = Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Alphabet (Google), Visa, Home Depot, Coca Cola, Comcast, Philip Morris - VUG holds a good mix of large cap growth companies with a solid 1.18% dividend yield make this a staple in my portfolio. (SPY) SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust - Launched in 1993, this is literally the oldest ETF in existence, and it’s been one of the most solid over the years. - The spider S&P 500 tracks all of the companies contained within...You guessed it… the S&P 500! - 1 year ROI = 18.05% - 5 year ROI = 89.61% - Top 10 holdings are Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Johnson & Johnson, Berkshire Hathaway, JP Morgan Chase, Exxon, Google, Bank of America - This is for investors who want just a little less volatility than you would get with a growth ETF like VUG - This is a great “set it and forget it" ETF that you just add to monthly (VYM) VANGUARD High Dividend Yield - Dividend-paying stocks tend to perform better, as a group, than non-dividend stocks, and also generally do better during tough economic times. - For investors who want exposure to rock-solid dividend stocks, but don't want the guesswork and risk involved with choosing individual stocks - Invests in 401 stocks that pay higher-than-average dividend yields, and specifically excludes REITs - 1 year ROI = 12.36% - 5 year ROI= 73.34% ARK ETF Trust - The ARK ETF is an actively-managed fund that focuses on companies working in next-generation sectors, like cloud computing and Big Data. It has a nice mixture of recognizable names, as well as lesser-known speculative companies. - BitCoin Investment Trust is the top holding in ARK, and this fund is banking heavily on bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. While that may seem like an unnecessarily heavy risk, I believe could possibly pay off handsomely. - 1 year ROI = 85.34% - Since Oct 2014 = 139% - Top 10 holdings: bitcoin investment trust, amazon, athena health, twitter, tesla, 2U inc, netflix, nvidia, google, mercadolibre. Bitcoin and the blockchain are the ultimate disruptors. Vanguard VTI vs VOO - What is the Best ETF? (Index Funds 2019) 🏆

05:45
Vanguard VTI ETF and Vanguard VOO ETF are the best ETFs in the Stock Market for Index Funds investing in 2019. Which is the best ETF? VTI vs VOO - which ETF is the best investment? Let's compare both the Vanguard VTI vs VOO and find the best Index Fund for 2019. FULL breakdown of VOO: https://goo.gl/5ETrCQ In a Nutshell VOO tracks the S&P 500. VTI on the other hand is different - it's called the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF. The name may be a bit misleading, because when they say total stock market, they actually mean the total US stock market. More specifically, it tracks the performance of the CRSP US Total Market Index. The fund is comprised of Large, mid, and small-cap equities so it gives you a wide range of exposure. They also offer a very low expense ratio MER 0.04% - some of the lowest in the industry. And of course they offer you exposure to tons of company - 3573 to be exact! Now you may be wondering how to pick between VOO and VTI. I made a chart (shown in the video) for you guys to compare them side by side and you can see there that right off the bat, a big advantage that VTI has over VOO is the price/share is cheaper. So if you have a lower amount of capital, this may be the better, or in some case only option. MER's are comparable with both at 0.04% and the number of stocks obviously differs - VOO has 509 and VTI has 3573. This is where your own personal preference comes into play and I personally think exposure to the S&P 500 is more than enough diversification, as these are the 500 largest companies in America. But if you feel more comfortable holding 3500+ companies for more diversity, that's totally cool too - to each their own! And then the last thing here is Dividend yield - which VOO has at 1.52% and VTI is a bit higher of 1.79%. So VTI has the edge here and over time, this may actually make a big difference depending on the performance of each ETF. So based on this comparison, you may already have a favorite here - but what are we all really here for? Let's not kid ourselves - we want to see how these 2 compare with the stock price performance over time! Year to date, VTI does have the win here, coming in at 16.63% vs VOO's 16.20%. On a little longer time period though, this changes, with the 1 year performance of VTI coming in at 3.99%, but VOO beats it here with 4.57%. Even longer, at 5 years, VOO again comes out with the win at 52.94% vs VTI's 50.24%. But then if we go out and compare both from their inception, which is September 2010, after the recession in 2008, we can see the gap is closed off again with VTI coming in at 151.75% returns and VOO with 151.40% returns. So based on this data, you can see they are more or less the same over the long term. In the short term, VOO could out perform VTI, but if you're investing in these funds, it's a long term game. Now the KEY thing when picking one is to ask yourself this question: Do I think that Large cap blue chip companies will perform better over the long term? Or do I think small and medium caps will out perform. The reason I say this is because when you compare the top 10 holdings of each fund, you will see that VOO does have a large weight on the top 10, coming in at 21.80% of the overall weight, vs VTI's top 10 at 17.90%. So if you believe these 10 names will continue doing well and will outperform majority of smaller companies out there, VOO may be the better investment, just because of the large weight these companies have in each of these 2 ETFs. Now I present the question to you - VTI or VOO? Comment down below and let's see which ETF has more support! And if you think this video would be useful for a friend, make sure to share it with them so you can help them achieve a stable financial future! #Vanguard #VTI #VOO #PositiveInvesting 🔴 *VIP Membership Group* 🔴 View my portfolio & every single trade I make! Top Jobs in Finance Explained: Investment Banking, Accounting and Private Equity

06:57
Interested in getting a career in Finance? Not sure what part of Finance you want to work in? This video explains the different types of jobs you can get in Finance. Whether you want to be an Investment Banker, Financial Analyst, Accountant or a Finance Manager. I will walk you through all the options here. · Investment banking · Private Equity · Investment Managers (Buy Side Financial Analysts) – Banks, insurance companies, Hedge funds. · Corporate Finance · Accountant – Responsible for reporting financial results. Public accountants usually work for the "Big 4" accounting firms or other firms structured similarly. The first Financial Analyst role that I’d like to teach you exists within Investment Banks and is the analyst job that supports Investment Bankers. Within the industry it is commonly known as the Investment Banking Analyst. In this job you would be responsible for completing all the research required to analyze your assigned deal. An investment bank’s role is to help a company raise money by issuing an IPO(Initial Public Offering) or a subsequent sale of securities and stock. M&A Analyst Investment Banking is similar to Mergers and Acquisitions, which is why Investment Banks perform a lot of M&A activity. The analysts value both companies separately as well as together. Before that can be done, you will have to help your client find a suitable company to merge with. Investment Management The investment industry is another area that uses the Financial Analyst title. Analysts assist the Investment Manager with ensuring money is invested to maximize return and minimize risk. The teams managing these investments may work for the company who owns the investments or they may be a separate company managing the investments of numerous companies. In the former relationship, these individuals would work for a bank, insurance company or a trust. The Investment Manager’s job is vital to the success of the company so earning the maximum amount of return on investment is crucial. The Financial Analysts who work here are expected to know portfolio analysis very well and will need to obtain the CFA Charter. Some more specific names for these positions are Investment Analyst, Fund Analyst, or Portfolio Analyst. Financial Planning & Analysis There are a handful of finance jobs that exist within all medium to large corporations. The FP&A (financial planning and analysis) is one such role. This area is the core of the finance department and performs most of the analysis for the company. One of the functions of FP&A is to provide reporting to management on the performance of the company. This reporting includes analysis of growth rates, trends, and other relevant analysis. Private Wealth Management A Private Wealth Management professional works with high net worth individuals to assist them with protecting or increasing their wealth through diversification of financial assets. Their main role is managing the relationship between the financial institution and the client while serving the needs of the client. They will suggest specific funds or risk reduction strategies to help the client protect and grow their money. Some job titles you will see for these roles are Private Wealth Manager, Private Wealth Analyst, or Wealth Management Analyst Credit Analyst Credit analysts are not really covered here in this video, but they are responsible for evaluating the risk of a company to determine their creditworthiness. This is relevant for evaluating whether or not to give a company a loan and the structure and terms of that loan. The method used to determine the company’s risk is typically through the analysis of their financial statements. Buy-Side / Sell-Side Analyst A Buy-Side Financial Analyst is evaluating a company to determine if their stock is good to invest in and make part of their investment portfolio. A Sell-Side Financial Analyst has the responsibility of evaluating a company and making a recommendation to the Buy-Side Analysts to either buy or don’t buy. The main difference between the two jobs is that the Sell-Side Analyst has to do a very thorough analysis of the company. The Buy-Side Analyst uses this analysis to make their stock purchase decision. For more information, visit Careerintellect.com. It simply kicked butt and took names and many people made a mint in that fund for that time. But over the next 8 years that fund fell on HARD TIMES!!! How did you do if you invested $100k in it in 2001 and took 5% a year distributions? The results will shock you.
The Mega-Trend Threats To Passive Investing (w/ Niels Jenson) | Expert View | Real Vision™

31:56
Niels Jensen, the CIO of Absolute Return Partners, outlines six mega-trends which he believes will devastate the performance of passive investing over the next decade. While the timing is difficult to predict, the trends are inevitabilities that will require significant tweaks to long term portfolio construction. Filmed April 19, 2018 in Twickenham, England. The reason GDP growth is so slow, the reason productivity growth is so slow at the moment, is because we are at the end of a debt super cycle. I know you would like to ask me the question how could I be wrong. But I can guarantee you that these mega-trends will unfold. I'm a Danish National. Came home to my wife one spring day in 1986. I said to her, would you like to move to London? I've been offered a very interesting job. That's now 31 years ago. So we have now spent-- we are, for all intents and purposes, British nationals, but obviously with strong Danish roots. I have work mostly for American investment banks. I worked for Goldman Sachs for many years. I ended up at Lehman Brothers, heading up the private wealth management division in Europe. Then in 2002 I decided to start my own business, which is now into 17, 18 years. That business was mostly in multi-family office business, but gradually-- especially after the financial crisis in 2008-- we have increasingly become institutional. And today the biggest client base for our business today is the UK corporates pension fund base. The end game could unfold in a number of different ways. But let me back up before we get to the end game. Let me explain why I think the world has changed quite dramatically in recent years. The typical investor today doesn't really care about the long-term. For most investors, long-term means next Monday morning and not next year or the year after. And therefore, some of the longer term structural trends that I have focused on in my book are being largely ignored and neglected by investors. And that's actually an opportunity set for those investors who are prepared to dig a little bit deeper and prepared to structure their portfolio according to what is going to unfold over the next 10, 20, 30 years. The end game can unfold in a number of different ways. If you go back to one of the six structured mega-trends that I discussed in the book, it's what I call the end of the debt super cycle. The last debt super cycle ended in the 1940s-- late '30s, early '40s. And that basically reset the clock. Debt to GDP has been rising constantly since 1946. And I'm arguing in my book that we are now approaching the end of the current debt super cycle. If you go back in history to 300, 400 years, you can find a number of debt super cycles. It's not an unknown phenomenon. We typically build up debt, something happens, everything collapses, and we start all over again. And that's precisely what we are at now. We are at the tail end of the current debt super cycle. That, combined with a number of other factors, will potentially end up in what I call the perfect storm-- a prolonged period of low GDP growth, low returns on equities. And for that reason investors need to think fundamentally differently in terms of how they structure their portfolios for many years to come. The way I structure portfolios, first of all, it is quite different from the way most people do it. Most people think of portfolio construction as how much do I allocate to equities, how much to allocate to bonds. They think of asset classes when they talk to their portfolios. I don't think of asset classes. I think of risk pockets.

(w/ Christophe Ollari) | Expert View | Real Vision™ https://www.youtube.com/c/RealVisionTelevision Transcript: My name is Christophe Ollari. I have designed, about something like three years ago, a global macro research MMT asset class and multi-currency. I did that after 20 years of trading in banks and the hedge fund community. What triggered the volatility in Q4 2018? When I came last June, and we already sensed that the prevailing environment was relatively toxic, and we saw some rising fears and threats creeping at the surface. The first one was a nascent trade escalation between the US and China. Then we had also the synchronous growth downturn and gaining some momentum led by China and Europe with the usual rising concern when we talk about China, which is the hard landing potential, hard landing of the economy. We had, of course, the big, big elephant in the room, which was the Fed, determined to pursue the dual tightening and normalization of the very easy monetary policy, on one side continuing the Fed funds hikes, on the other side, ongoing on off of the balance sheet. I think that there was another dynamic, which was very important as well, which was a consequence of the strong dollar, but also of the trade war. Its pressures on the central emerging market central banks to-- that were facing a clear dilemma. It's either supporting the economy, taking the risk to see inflation in their own currency, collapsing with the threat of the capital flight, or just deciding, to some extent, sacrifice the economy in order to support their currency. This is a choice that most of EM central banks made, Turkey, Argentina, Indonesia, Russia, India decided to hike, which, in fact, contributed to amplify the global tightening of the financial conditions. So that was the main threat in-- when we met so last June. And what has been the rest of the year. It has been, in fact, the confirmation that it was not only a narrative, that it was a proper risk. And everything just shifted into a much more, I would say, Armageddon scenario at the end of September and at the beginning of October. We have three very important dynamics. The first one on the 24th of September, the US administration has applied the $200 billion of tariffs on the Chinese goods. Why it's so important, it's, for the first time, the trade war narrative becomes a reality. Then you have early October a dual process. First of all, the runoff of the balance sheet of the Fed moves from $40 billion a month to $50 billion a month. And this is happening at the height in September of the FOMC on the 20th of September. And at that meeting, the Fed is already communicating that there will be another hike in December. Also, early October, you have the ECB, which is having their monthly buybacks from $30 billion to $50 billion and announcing that the end of their monthly buyback will happen early January. What does it mean? It means that early October for the first time since GFC, the monthly flow of the central bank has become negative. We had a very quick episode in early 2015. It didn't last as the ECB. So you had that dual dynamic, which was extremely disruptive for the market because, on one side, the trade war is a reality. On the other side, we can say that the central bank's largest, which has been the trademark of 10-- the past 10 years is over.

Types Of Equity Mutual Funds Part II (Gujarati) - Franklin Templeton India

03:36
"Watch the second part of Types of Equity Mutual Funds videos to learn about sectoral funds, and international funds. The video also talks about what is diversified equity mutual funds, and how they make it easy to invest your money in diversified assets. Let’s say you’re free to go ahead pick a diverse range of different fruits, from different trees of different qualities from a garden, at the price of a regular fruit basket. That’s the main basis of mutual funds – diversification at relatively low cost. Then what is a diversified equity mutual fund and how is it different? The answer is that they further this principle, a diversified equity fund spreads its portfolio across a mixed basket of stocks. But hey! A lot of people, like you, only like apples, making apples quite popular and in demand. This means that a lot of companies that manufacture ingredients which help these apples grow, will also benefit from the popularity of apples. Yes, when a particular industry thrives it takes all its suppliers up with it! That’s how we can classify the second type of equity funds. So to recap what is thematic fund? These funds invest in more than one industry or sector, generally with a correlation between them, although that is not always necessary. Like ‘Infrastructure’ which has gained popularity in the last few years, based on which equity funds invest in sectors or industries which benefit or affect the overall infrastructure development in the country. Ok but the truth is there really is no fruit like the king of fruits and it’s called the ‘Mango’! Have you noticed how all types of mangoes are always in demand? Whether it’s Alphanso, Dasheri, Langda, Dudhiya, Malda… everybody wants to eat a mango, so maybe you should invest everything in that one, grand fruit! That’s how Sector Funds are classified. What are sector funds? Sector funds focuses their investments on certain industries only, constructing the portfolio from companies from that sector and allowing an investor to exploit the opportunities offered by it. Some of the common ones being Pharma, FMCG, etc. Watch the below video to know more about sector funds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd2q8h6CSuE To know what are thematic funds, watch the below video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9L51SGSBYqM International or cross-border diversification is also quite popular. It allows an investor, to exploit opportunities outside his own country, with the added benefit of a diversified portfolio across different economies and countries, which reduces the risk! To know more about international funds, watch the below video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE66Fo0QVxk We hope you enjoyed watching this video!
