I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined. Today I am going to talk about new tools to find and access the best available versions of scholarly journal articles; legally and at no cost. There are at least two at this time; Unpaywall and Kopernio. First Unpaywall is an online widget that crawls the web, searching for free-to-read versions of paywalled papers. Unpaywall is a web-browser extension that looks for papers in repositories worldwide, including preprint services and databases. Unpaywall indicates when a free version is found, but also lets you know one is not available. Unpaywall reports that users find fully accessible text for 47% of articles; of course, results vary. They access open data from PubMed Central, the Directory of Open Access Journals, Crossref, and DataCite. Second is Kopernio. Kopernio is a browser plugin that finds the best available PDF of a journal article. Kopernio searches open databases and university subscriptions; if accessible to the user, to find the best version of the article. This tool streamlines finding scholarly content by also accessing such sources as Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, publisher’s platforms, and repositories. Kopernio does two things. For materials that the user’s library has a subscription, Kopernio ensures that the they end up at the publisher’s version, entering the user’s credentials. For materials that the user’s library has not licensed, Kopernio brings the user to an open version if one is available, such as a preprint or an author deposited manuscript in a repository. Kopernio is making news this week as they were acquired by Clarivate Analytics. Kopernio and Unpaywall prides themselves on not including results from sources of questionable legality like Sci-Hub, or even ResearchGate. All of their results are above board, and if they are found out not to be, promptly removed. Both tools, and likely others to come, are in a response to the frustration by users who feel finding appropriate articles is a bit of a maze, particularly when they don’t have access to a federated search tool. Publishers will appreciate more readers finding their materials and users will feel articles are more easily accessible; a win all around. Well that’s it. I am a publishing consultant and work with associations, publishers, and individuals on a host of content related challenges. Reach out to me at Riverwinds.com. Hit the Like button below if you enjoyed this video. Please subscribe to my YouTube channel or click on the playlist or more videos about scholarly publishing. And make comments below. Thank so much and take care.

Links provided for educational purposes only—literally! But wait, isn’t illegal to download “pirated” papers? I explore the controversy in the thrilling conclusion of this two-part video series in Sci-Hub Opens Up a World of Knowledge (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/Sci-Hub-Opens-Up-a-World-of-Knowledge) up next. My research into Sci-Hub came from a whole webinar I did on research techniques, which was captured into an online Continuing Medical Education course through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Searching for scholarly Education journal articles using the APSU online library

02:04
TRANSCRIPT: Hi, students. This tutorial will show you how to access scholarly articles related to Education using the APSU online library. From our website, click the magnifying glass and go to A to Z Index. Then click L and select Library. Next, hover over Search & Find and click Article Databases. Click E and then Education Full Text. You will need to login to the library using your APSU credentials. I’m already logged in, so it took me to the search page. Here’s where you can enter keywords. For example, if you’re looking for articles about classroom management, enter those words. If you want to further narrow it down, you might also include additional keywords such as high school. Scroll down to Search Options and check the Full Text box as well as the Scholarly Peer Reviewed Journals box. You can also narrow it down to articles published within the last few years. Now click Search. If you click on the title, the article will open up in the window. If you click PDF, it will open up as a PDF. If you click Google Drive, a copy will be saved to your Drive. You just have to sign in to link your Google account. You can also get help citing the article when you click on Cite.

Locating Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles

03:08
For your upcoming research project, you will need to read at least five peer-reviewed journal articles. My previous video provided an overview of the characteristics of peer-reviewed articles. This video will demonstrate how to locate these kinds of articles, for free, through the Library’s website. If you are working off-campus, begin by logging into your my.commnet portal. Look for the “My Library Info” tab at the top. Choose Naugatuck Valley Community College Library. This page contains a list of all of the library’s electronic databases. This is where you will find peer-reviewed articles on your topic. Choose Academic Search Premier or a psychology database like PsycINFO or Psychology & Behavioral Sciences. Begin by typing a keyword into one of the search boxes. You can combine as many keywords as you’d like. Before you hit “search,” make sure the “limit to peer-review” box is checked. This is how your search results will display. To learn more about a particular article, click on the title to view the abstract, or summary. You can also find out which journal the article was originally published in. Locate the PDF full text icon to see the full article. You can download the article, print it, or email it to yourself. If you need a link that you can use again in the future, make sure to use the “permalink” option seen here. This will make sure you can get back to this article. A second option is to search within a specific journal, i.e., Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. Use the A-Z journal finder link on the library’s home page, and begin typing the title of the journal. Once you locate it, you can “search within” with a keyword for your topic. Again, use the PDF Full Text icon to view the article. If you have questions about locating peer-reviewed articles for your assignment, please contact me!

Stossel: Debating a Hoaxed Journal Editor

The editor of a journal that fell for a hoax defends his field. --------- Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/reasontv Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Reason.Magaz... Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/reason Subscribe to our podcast at iTunes: https://goo.gl/az3a7a Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. --------- Seven academic journals recently published papers that were actually hoaxes designed to show the absurdity found in such academic fields as gender studies, race studies, and queer studies. The hoaxers intentionally submitted papers that were ridiculous. One included gibberish about rape culture in dog parks. Another was a section of Hitler's Mein Kampf re-written with feminist buzzwords. Six journal editors would not talk to Stossel, but one—Roberto Refinetti, editor in chief of Sexuality and Culture—agreed to an interview. He condemns what the hoaxers did: "You're deceiving people without much of a reason." He complains, "If you're going to do your research with people, you have to propose your research, submit to a body called an Institutional Review Board." One of the hoaxers, Peter Boghossian, was found guilty by his employer (Portland State University) of violating its rules requiring him to get approval for the experiment. Of course, since the Institutional Review Board would have insisted that the researchers inform the journals that they were being tested, the test wouldn't have worked. Stossel says he thinks the hoaxers had good reason not to go to the review board first. "Their hoax woke us up to the fact that some academic journals publish nonsense," he says. Refinetti's journal, for instance, published the hoax paper titled, "Going in Through the Back Door: Challenging Straight Male Homohysteria, Transhysteria, and Transphobia Through Receptive Penetrative Sex Toy Use." The paper touted "encouraging male anal eroticism with sex toys" because it would help make men more feminist. Sexuality and Culture published that paper after its reviewers praised it glowingly. One called it "an incredibly rich and exciting contribution...timely, and worthy of publication." Refinetti defends his journal, saying that it publishes mind-expanding questions. "What is the problem with [the subject of the paper]? I don't see a problem....It's nothing really absurd or unusual," Refinetti says. He also says: "Let's question our assumptions, because maybe we're making assumptions that we shouldn't be making....When homosexuality was considered a mental illness. People pushed, the psychiatrists got together, and said...'it's a perfectly fine thing to choose and not to call it mental illness.' So that's the type of thing that a journal in sexuality and culture does, is discuss." Discussion is good, Stossel agrees. But in journals today, it seems that only certain conclusions are permitted. The hoaxers complain that in many university fields: "A culture has developed in which only certain conclusions are allowed, like those that make whiteness and masculinity problematic." "I wouldn't be surprised to find out that in some places that is correct," Refinetti agrees. "Is that a problem?" asks Stossel. Refinetti replies: "How big of a problem is it? Is it worse than hunger? Is it worse than people shooting each other?" But a lack of diversity of ideas does make it harder to find truth—and more likely for ridiculous ideas to thrive. Today's colleges have an extreme lack of diversity: A National Association of Scholars report found that professors at top liberal arts colleges are 10 times more likely to be Democrats than Republicans. Refinetti says that's not surprising. "I think it's very reasonable—because what is the job of learning?...Being more open to new ideas, which is what being a liberal is," he says. Stossel pushes back: "This is your left-leaning definition; it's conservatives that proposed changes like school vouchers...privatizing air traffic control." "That's an interesting point," Refinetti responds. "Then the hypothesis is shut down. See, that's how things work. You show the idea, you discuss the idea, and get it." Refinetti says his journal publishes multiple viewpoints. It has published articles that question feminist orthodoxy. Stossel says he's grateful that Refinetti was willing to have a conversation, but he still cheers the hoaxers for revealing that much of what passes for scholarship at colleges is bunk. How to write a literature review

09:21
How to write a literature review. It’s easier than you might think! In this video, I demonstrate how to search the literature and identify relevant papers for your literature review. I do a pubmed search using Boolean operators and MeSH terms (these are extremely powerful tools that will help you sift through the large number of academic papers out there). So if you’re doing a master’s thesis or a PhD, or you’re doing research and writing a paper, at some point, you’ll need to do a lit review. A big part of that review is the search and this video is going to help you get that right. You might be doing a systematic literature review or meta-analysis – again, you’ll need to do a good PubMed search that identifies the right studies. Thanks to BMC !!! ----------------------------- This video was sponsored by BMC – (click here to go to BMC: https://goo.gl/RFaUA2 ). As a pioneer of open access publishing, BMC has an evolving portfolio of high-quality peer-reviewed journals including broad interest titles such as BMC Biology and BMC Medicine, specialist journals such as Malaria Journal and Microbiome, and the BMC series. BMC is committed to continual innovation to better support the needs of research communities, ensuring the integrity of the research we publish, and championing the benefits of open research. BMC is part of Springer Nature, giving us greater opportunities to help authors connect and advance discoveries across the world. I’m particularly excited about having BMC’s support because I’ve been working with them for nearly 15 years as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Globalization and Health. I’ve been extremely impressed by them as a company that has integrity and that is truly making the world a better place. LEARN MORE about literature reviews ------------------------------------------------------------ Of course, there is more to a literature review than just the search. You need to have a structured approach to selecting paper, extracting data, writing the review itself and creating a bibliography. For more detail on these aspects of a literature review, go to www.learnmore365.com where I have a full course on literature review (it takes about 30 minutes to complete).
