049: Linda Raschke on trading edges, modelling markets and day trading techniques.

01:37:56
Trading edges come and go... In an industry with such a low survival rate, what does it actually take to not only survive, but thrive, over an extended period of time? The guest for this podcast episode, Linda Raschke, has been trading for over 35 years. She traded for several hedge funds before starting her own, ranking 17th out of 4500 hedge funds by Barclays Hedge for 'Best 5 year performance'. She's experienced a large number of changes in the industry, some of them huge, but she’s managed to adapt and continues trading even today. Linda stands out from the crowd for three factors: Performance, Longevity and Consistency, so what does it actually take? What has she learnt over the years and what can we do to improve our own chances of performance, longevity and consistency? In our chat with Linda we discuss some of the changes over the years and the impacts on trading. We also hear about her approach to modelling the markets, understanding market behavior, trade management, day trading techniques and some fantastic questions submitted by fellow listeners. Make sure you don’t miss those! Some key points we cover: • Changes in the markets over time and the impacts that has had on strategies and their performance • How to use modelling to identify market behavior and edges • AI, machine learning and neural network techniques • Tips and factors to consider when daytrading • Reading market behavior throughout the day • PLUS loads of great questions submitted by Better System Trader listeners!

Trading Strategy - The Holy Grail Trading Setup

09:40
Trading Strategy - The Holy Grail Trading Setup http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/trading/day-trading-course.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! In this video, we review the famous "Holy Grail Setup" used by market wizard, Linda Bradford Raschke featured in Jack Schwager’s book, The New Market Wizards.. It aims to catch retracements on strong trends. The “Holy Grail” setup was developed by Linda Bradford Raschke and Larry Connors who named it so for its simplicity. The trading strategy is designed to catch corrections in markets that have shown evidence of increased momentum, with the average directional movement index (ADX) and a 20-day exponential moving average (EMA) providing the setup. This trading strategy or pattern utilises Welles Wilder's ADX (Average Directional Index), which basically takes into account the strength of a trend over a set period of time. The ADX will read higher for stronger trends. This pattern takes into account that the chances are high that when a stock reaches a new momentum high and pulls back, it will likely retest the recent high. As such any pullback from a new momentum high can be bought because a top may be in place. With this strategy, chances that a top has been reaches is likely only 5% to 10%. If you check for individual shares that have rises in the last months you'll see that a number of them have had Holy Grail patterns. With the Holy Grail pattern, we want the stock to fall back to a 20 day moving average after its ADX indicator has moved to a value above 30 Holy Grail Pattern Buy rules (sells are reversed) 1. The 14-period ADX must initially be greater than 30 and rising. 2. Look for a retracement in price to the 20 period exponential moving average. This will usually be accompanied by a turndown in the ADX. 3) When the price touches the 20 period moving average, put a buy stop above the high of the previous bar. 4) Once filled, enter a protective sell stop at the newly formed swing low. Trail stops as profits grow. The indicators you need for this strategy are: 3-10 oscillator. It is the difference between a 3-day simple moving average and a 10-day simple moving average. Plus, there’s a second line which is a 16-period simple moving average of the 3-10 line. You can simply alter the settings for an MACD (moving average convergence-divergence indicator), changing the moving average type from exponential to simple and the moving average lengths to 3, 10 and 16. For forex traders, we provide the MACD-SMA indicator here. 14-period ADX (average directional movement index). This indicator is used to gauge trend strength. 20-period Exponential Moving Average Her rules for going long are as follows: 1. Wait for the ADX to rise above 30 2. Buy the first retracement to the 20-period EMA 3. Look to exit on the push to new highs The best setups also have confirming factors such as the 3-10 oscillator making new momentum highs. Her rules for going short are as follows: 1. Wait for the ADX to rise above 30 2. Buy the first retracement to the 20-period EMA 3. Look to exit on the push to new lows The best setups also have confirming factors such as the 3-10 oscillator making new momentum lows. This strategy is definitely interesting to us. With the clear take profit level of the last high/low respectively if you buy/sell, you can consider setting a stop loss level of the same absolute magnitude, for a 1:1 reward to risk ratio. With such a reward to risk ratio, you will require a higher win ratio. Let us know how this system works for you, especially if you know of any ways to increase the win ratio.

124: Managing Trades with Linda Raschke

43:46
Trade management is a critical component of a trading strategy. It can often be the difference between a profitable trade and a loss… However many traders focus on the entry only and leave trade management as an afterthought. In episode 49 of the podcast, Linda Raschke, said “trade management is probably the most neglected area of system development”. In that episode we focused on Linda’s approach to modelling the markets but in this episode Linda is back to discuss trade management and exits, including: Why trade management is such a neglected aspect of trading, How to model different types of exits and the impact of market environments, How volume and breadth measures can give clues to the tone of the market, and How to use the power of relative strength to target the best markets to trade.

Turtle Soup Pattern | Trading Strategy (Setup & Exit 1) 🐢

Turtle Soup Pattern | Trading Strategy (Setup & Exit 1) http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/trading/day-trading-course.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! Trading strategies and tactics from Linda Bradford Raschke. I liked her approach to setups; she was day trading and swing trading and she not only outlined her strategies but also backtested them which resonates well with me. This strategy takes advantage of false breakouts and works well in a trending environment. It won't work in a breakout situation though... 1) Today must make a new 20 period low. 2) The prior 20 day low must have been more than 4 sessions ago. 3) When the price falls below the prior 20 day low - place a buy stop entry several ticks above that low. 4) If filled, place a sell stop 1 tick under the current days low.

Short Skirt Scalping Trading Strategy for Day Traders

07:36
Short Skirt - looking at trading setups and strategies. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/trading/day-trading-course.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! I've been looking at Linda Bradford Raschke's trading setups in particular. In the previous videos we've discussed plenty of swing trading strategies; this is one strictly for the day traders out there. She's named this the 'Short Skirt' trade. This is a very active scalping setup and its actually one that I've been using often in the past and didn't realize it was something she used. I don't call it a Short Skirt; I call it a 'first pullback' setup. This consists of an explosion in volatility; let's say to the upside for now followed by a pullback to somewhere and then a continuation. Linda buys on the pullback and then she scales out as it approaches the high. I also know that Linda uses Keltners a lot and I've reviewed these before. This setup is based on a short-term continuation pattern that tests out with a 68% win-loss ratio on a mechanical basis.

How To Use The 3/10 Oscillator For Better Trading

07:06
http://www.netpicks.com/tjgiveaway1 - YOUR FREE TRADING SYSTEM The MACD indicator is very useful when thinking of it in terms of momentum and trend and not as a holy grail. There are many settings that can be used and I prefer to use the settings that reflect the 3/10 oscillator (Raschke). While you can simply input the numbers 3,10,16 into your standard MACD, the proper 3/10 uses simple averages. In Sierra charts (fast becoming my top charting platform), there is a drop down menu where you can change the type of average. 3/10 OSCILLATOR SETUP The fast line is a good indicator of the overall change in momentum and the slow line is generally regarded as displaying the intermediate trend of the instrument. http://www.netpicks.com/310-oscillator-macd/ - Read more Risk Disclosures: https://www.netpicks.com/risk-disclosure/

An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money that can be lost without jeopardizing ones' financial security or life style. Don’t trade with money you can’t afford to lose. Only risk capital should be used for trading and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Trading books come in different categories; you have the psychology books, the story books and then you have the strategy books. I like to read books about traders' lives as they tend to dip into bits of everything but let's talk about strategy books here. When you read these kind of strategy books you might realise that some of these strategies won't work in the current market conditions however, its good to see strategies that others traders have used; how they formed them, how they traded these strategies and the rules for these strategies. 1) Studies in tape reading - looking at price action and how price is changing or not changing or responding to news/highs/lows..etc 2) The Playbook by Mike Bellafiore - this is a book of strategies that proprietary trading firms used. 3) Street Smarts by Linda Raschke - this is a good book that outlines different trading strategies with rules for entry, exit, for stop and for taking profits. It is useful in realising how a trading strategy is formed. Some of these strategies could work in today's market but may need to be tweeked. trading strategy books

Whiplash Trading Strategy: How to Master the Whiplash Trade

09:30
Whiplash Trading Strategy: How to Master the Whiplash Trade http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/trading/day-trading-course.html Another trading strategy. PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! This one is called Whiplash; this setup takes advantage of gaps that don't follow thru. This strategy is one of Linda Bradford Raschke's trading setups. The whiplash pattern is based upon a day when a gap in the morning is followed by a reversal in the afternoon. Linda's setup tries to ensure that the momentum has reversed since the morning gap, then entering the position on close. 1) Today the gap has got to be below yesterday's low 2.) Today's close of the day is above the open AND in the top 50% of the range. This rule makes sense as it implies continued strength if you're talking about a gap lower. 3) If 1 and 2 are met buy at the close and wait for the next day. This strategy gives some control of risk by holding the position overnight however this may be okay if you are using correct trade sizing. 4) On the next day - exit at open if market gaps lower or trail winner if it gaps higher.

Three Day Gap Fill Trading Strategy

Three-Day Unfilled Gap Reversals. PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/trading/day-trading-course.html Trading Setups and Strategies. This one is called the Three Day Gap Fill developed by Linda Bradford Raschke. Look into some of our past videos to check some of her other strategies or at least great foundations to build your own strategy from. These rules are for the buy side, the rules for the sell side are basically identical - just flip highs and lows with buys and sells. Gaps are used often in technical analysis to help with decision-making. There are different gap types such as breakaway gaps or exhaustion gaps which come at the extremes. The Three Day Unfilled Gap Reversal signals periods where the stock has exhausted itself and a reversal is close at hand. Three Day Gap Fill (Buy) 1) If today gaps lower and does not fill the gap - Then 2) Place a buy stop entry just above the high of the gap down day. 3) If filled, put a stop under the gap down day low 4) Buy entry is only valid for 3 days So you're looking for that downside momentum (gap down) - attempt to push back up and the next day you're buying the continuation if you like. How to Day Trade with Keltner Channels

How to Day Trade with Keltner Channels http://www.contracts-for-difference.com/course/cfd-guide.html You can't look at Bollingers without at least taking a look at Keltners. PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! I think Keltners are under-utilized yet they can be very useful for us traders. Rather than contracting and expanding so violently like Bollinger Bands do Keltners don't do that and often price will go above or below a Keltner channel for a long period of time because of the nature the formula is derived. You use it in the same manner that you use Bollinger Bands; you sell the High, buy the Low and when you are in a trending environment

How to think about trading strategies like a quant – Derek Wong

01:11:46
EP 097: How to think about strategies like a quant and diversify like a boss w/ Derek Wong On this episode, I have our very first guest from China; Derek Wong—he is the Director of Systematic Trading and Options at a private fund in Shanghai. Initially though, Derek got his start in the agricultural pits at the CBOT, then following on from this, he’s worked at various quant shops in Chicago, South Korea, and now days, mainland China. After discussing Derek’s backstory, we talk; emerging markets, cultural differences of Chinese investors, convergent and divergent strategies, diversification, and some slightly unconventional ways of thinking about how you trade. Additionally, Derek also has some awesome insight for traders who are discretionary and what traders should focus once reaching profitability. - - - - - - LINKS - - - - - - · Show notes: https://chatwithtraders.com/ep-093-ben-blb-capital · More interviews: https://chatwithtraders.com · Free resources: https://chatwithtraders.com/resources · Sponsored by TradeStation: http://www.tradestation.com/ · Twitter: https://twitter.com/chatwithtraders · Facebook: http://facebook.com/chatwithtraders · Instagram: https://instagram.com/chatwithtraders_ · Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/chat-with-traders · Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/chat-with-traders
