How to Manage Change using Chaos Strategy at CGG Veritas by Joseph Roevens PhD
CHANGE LEADERSHIP. This clip summarizes the Strategy of Chaos lecture at CGG Veritas University. Chaos theory claims that a seemingly unimportant event can influence how an organization dramatically changes. In this interactive lecture, Joseph Roevens clarifies that because of unpredictability and uncertainty, it is unintelligent to design long-term strategic management plans. Instead of plans, jOseph offers us four contexts in which to see management initiatives and their possible effects on the organisation. These contexts are called: enhance, perturb, attract, and excite. In certain contexts we need to establish a certain order and manage it, but in most circumstances we have to learn to be able to deal with uncertainty and chaos, and have to learn to change along with that. jOseph incites us to give dynamic stability to an organization, by offering it real security, by involving people to co-create and co-manage the organization, by the solutions focus and by the fact that organizational change can only go hand-in-hand with real personal change and leadership. The future of work is chaos | Claire Haidar | TEDxAthens
If we want to unleash human potential, we need to accelerate it by creatively harnessing chaos. A practical example of this is a playground: kids are playful and chaotic because they have defined structures and beautiful systems driving their development. Work should be no different. Let's start inventing new playgrounds to accelerate humans in the world. Claire Burge is the CEO of This is Productivity. Part adventure seeker, part nerd, part psychologist, part technologist. From chaos to calm | Eric Lang | TEDxCoconutGrove
Eric Lang is Fire Chief for the Village of Key Biscayne and has developed a model for decision making based on his experiences in resolving life and death crisis issues. To make better decisions in a crisis, as well as every day life, Eric suggests we can shift our perspective, recognize our place in the emergency, and use techniques to move towards calm and strategy to maximize the chances of the best possible outcome. Critical decisions are part of life for Eric Lang. He is a founding Paramedic/ Firefighter for The Village of Key Biscayne and is passionate about strategic thinking. After completing his MBA at the University of Miami he integrated the connections between emergency decisions that are made in business and daily life. Presently, he is the Key Biscayne Fire Chief, where he applies “Critical and Strategic Thinking” on a daily basis. It could be an emergency response or more traditional organizational decisions that need to be made and executed. The challenge of managing budgets, union contracts, crisis communications, and leading people requires a plan of action that is efficient and effective. Eric has combined his skills and knowledge to teach these strategic thinking concepts to create the right plan for any circumstance, business, or goal. How to Deal with Uncertainty at Work
Work seems to suck the life out of us these days. Here are 5 tips on how to deal with uncertainty at work: 1. Accept the craziness Understand that your place of work will have lots of changes. It’s a simple hard truth. Every single business is going through a massive change. From the way small businesses have changed to the disruption and change affecting big companies to the way the technology is constantly disrupting and reshaping big industries. Change and uncertainty have become the new norm. Don’t be surprised with chaos at work. It will happen. No one is immune from the up and down cycles especially during an unpredictable economy. People will change, the nature of work will be different and the way your place of work is organized will be different. Things you didn’t expect will likely happen because no one can predict the future. By FULLY ACCEPTING the chaos, change and disruption at work, we can start to shift how we deal with it. 2. Focus on what you can control It’s hard to focus on work when everyone around you is waiting for the next shoe to drop. But instead of waiting for that ‘shoe’, why not do something? If you’re not interested in leaving your job and are trying to deal with uncertainty within the same place, then find a project that you can do and just do it. Throw yourself into your specific goal and do it really, really well. Move forward and start working on something that you CAN control. If you’re thinking about making a career move, then go ahead and start sending out those resumes, make those calls or put out those feelers. Don’t waste your time going around the gossip mill. Stop trying to predict what’s going to happen next. You can’t. Get busy with doing something meaningful – something useful - something you have control over. 3. Try Something New - Take Action Dealing with uncertainty at work can make you feel lost sometimes. We’ve all seen people who are ‘checked out’ walking around like zombies with no life inside of them because of so much change and chaos at work. I’ve been there and it’s tough because many of us feel let down. Others are lost in their own mind because of overanalyzing what to do next. By actually going out and trying something completely new, you’ll be sending positive signals to yourself and to those around you that you’re resilient. You’ll demonstrate an exterior that says, “I have ideas and am throwing stuff on the wall”. Also trying new things allows you to feel like you’re progressing…not sitting there and sulking and waiting for something to happen. Getting out of limbo land and trying something new breathes new life to into a weary soul. Remember: Taking a step forward is rich nourishment that brings with it a potent tonic: momentum. 4. Don’t Believe the Hype. Believe Yourself. Don’t over think what others say is going to happen. They can’t predict the future. Don’t listen to the hype, the gossip, all the so called facts or anyone else….believe what YOU know to be true. Don’t over analyze what you think might happen next. Don’t over think the path you will take next. You were born with everything that you need to deal with uncertainty at work and make it through the chaos and move forward in life. It’s called your gut. Your intuition. Use it. Trust it. Trusting yourself when you’re dealing with uncertainty can make you feel like you are in control again. Because you really are. You are in control of yourself! 5. Know That Things Do Work Out Regardless of what happens during times of uncertainty at work, know that somehow, somewhere down the road, things do work out. I’ve had colleagues or friends who have lost jobs and somehow – by hook or crook, it has always worked out. Some have found better jobs – higher paying careers. Others have moved on to whole new lifestyles where they got out of the rat race altogether and are happier that they were forced to take a hard look at their life. Some became entrepreneurs and are thrilled. It didn’t happen overnight but it did happen – things did work out. Realizing that life has an interesting path that you have to uncover is a great way to deal with the uncertainty at work in a positive way. Let me wrap up, Uncertainty, change and disruption at work has become more common not only in your work but everyone’s workplace. You are not alone. Most of us - in all professions - are going through this roller coaster. And while uncertainty may exist right now in your workplace, it will get better over time. By redirecting your worries about the future to the things you can do about it right now, you can begin your path to start reducing your anxiety and stress and get back to living a life and career full of possibilities. Complexity Theory Overview
For full courses see: https://goo.gl/JJHcsw Follow along with the course eBook: https://goo.gl/Z2ekrB In this video we will be giving an overview to the area of complexity theory by looking at the major theoretical frameworks that are considered to form part of it and contribute to the study of complex systems. For full courses see: http://complexitylabs.io/courses Produced by: http://complexitylabs.io Twitter: https://goo.gl/ZXCzK7 Facebook: https://goo.gl/P7EadV LinkedIn: https://goo.gl/3v1vwF Transcription excerpt: Complexity theory is a set of theoretical frameworks used for modeling and analyzing complex systems within a variety of domains. Complexity has proven to be a fundamental feature to our world that is not amenable to our traditional methods of modern science, and thus as researchers have encountered it within many different areas from computer science to ecology to engineering they have had to develop new sets of models and methods for approaching it. Out of these different frameworks has emerged a core set of commonalities that over the past few decades has come to be recognized as a generic framework for studying complex systems in the abstract. Complexity theory encompasses a very broad and very diverse set of models and methods, as yet there is no proper formulation to structure and give definition to this framework, thus we will present it as a composite of four main areas that encompasses the different major perspective on complex systems and how to best interpret them. Firstly systems theory; Systems theory is in many ways the mother of complexity theory, before there was complexity theory, systems theory was dealing with the ideas of complexity, self-organization, adaptation and so on, almost all interpretations to complexity depend upon the concept of a system. In the same way that modern science can be formalized within the formal language of mathematics, all of complex systems science can be formalized within the language of systems theory but, systems theory is a very abstract and powerful formal language and it is typically too abstract for most people and thus is understood and used relatively little. Cybernetics is another closely related area of systems theory, it was also part in forming the foundation to complexity theory, cybernetics during the mid to late 20th century studied control systems and provided a lot of the theoretical background to modern computing, and thus we can see how the interplay between computing and complexity science goes all the way back to its origins as the two have developed hand-in-hand. A lot of systems theory is associated with and has come out of the whole area of computation. The areas of computer science and its counter part information theory have continued to be one of the few major contributors to complexity theory in many different ways, though systems theory is about much more than just computers it is a fully fledged formal language. Next nonlinear systems and chaos theory; Nonlinearity is an inherent feature and major theme that crosses all areas of complex systems. A lot of nonlinear systems theory has its origins in quite dense and obscure mathematics and physics. Out of the study of certain types of equations, weather patterns, fluid dynamics and particular chemical reactions has emerged some very counter intuitive phenomena in the form of the butterfly effect and chaos. Chaos theory, which is the study of nonlinear dynamical systems, was one of the first major challenges to the Newtonian paradigm that was except into the mainstream body of scientific knowledge. Our modern scientific framework is based upon linear systems theory and this places significant constrains upon it, linear systems theory is dependent upon the concept of a system having an equilibrium, although linear systems theory often works as an approximation, the fact is that many of the phenomena we are interested in describing are nonlinear and process of change such as regime shifts within ecosystems and society, happen far-from-equilibrium they are governed by the dynamics of feedback loops and not linear equations. Trying to model complex systems by using traditional linear systems theory is like trying to put a screw into a piece of wood with a hammer, we are simply using the wrong tool because it is the only one we have. Thus the areas of nonlinear systems and their dynamics is another major part to the framework of complexity theory that has come largely from physics, mathematics and the study of far-from-equilibrium processes in chemistry.

Leading in the VUCA world - How the Armed Forces do it | RAGHU RAMAN | TEDxIITBHU
Military and chaos are the two flipping sides of the same coin. Raghu Raman, former CEO of the Indian National Intelligence Grid apprises about how planning undertaken by the elite forces during peacetime aids in bringing the worst of chaotic situations such as a terrorist attack to order. His belief in an Indian soldier's momentous decisiveness when in crisis and strategic preparation when the need be is what he talks about. Raghu Raman was the former CEO of National Intelligence Grid(India). Raman joined the Indian Military Academy in 1986.He then left the army and went on to become the chief of operations of Mahindra Group’s used car business. So, here are 6 tips to adapting to change in the workplace that can help you grow, develop and succeed in navigating our turbulent times.
