FORESTS - A Natural Resource

13:11
FORESTS - A Natural Resource A FOREST IS USUALLY DESCRIBED AS A LARGE AREA OF LAND COVERED WITH TREES. HOWEVER, A FOREST HAS MUCH MORE THAN TREES IN IT. THERE ARE SMALL PLANTS SUCH AS HERBS, SHERBS, FERNS, AND MOSSES. MANY KINDS OF ANIMALS MAKE THEIR HOMES IN THE FOREST. MILLIONS OF TINY MICROSCOPIC ORGANISMS ALSO LIVE HERE. BIOTIC FACTORS DEPEND UPON VARIOUS ABIOTIC FACTORS, LIKE CLIMATE, SOIL AND LIVING THINGS AND THE ENVIRONMENT TOGETHER MAKE UP THE ECOSYSTEM IN THE FOREST. THE ECOSYSTEM CONSISTS OF ALL LIVING AND NON-LIVING THINGS IN A PARTICULAR AREA AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH EACH OTHER GREEN PLANTS ARE THE PRODUCERS. THEY PROVIDE FOOD FOR HERBIVOROUS ANIMALS. HERBIVOROUS ARE EATEN BY CARNIVOROUS ANIMALS. SOME ANIMALS ARE OMNIVORES. ANIMALS ARE CONSUMERS ANIMALS AND PLANTS ARE INTERLINKED TOGETHER THROUGH FOOD. THESE LINKAGES OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS FORM FOOD CHAINS AFTER PLANTS AND ANIMALS DIE, THEIR REMAINS ARE BROKEN DOWN BY DECOMPOSERS SUCH AS BACTIRIA AND FUNGI. ANIMALS THAT EAT DEAD ANIMALS ARE CALLED SCAVENGERS. SCAVENGERS EX:- JACKALS AND VULTURES DECOMPOSERS EX:- FUNGI AND BACTIRIA 60% OF THE EARTH’S LAND AREA WAS COVERED WITH FORESTS. TODAY FORESTS OCCOUPY ONLY 30% OF THE LAND AREA. THE GROWING POPULATION MAN’S DEPENDENCE ON FORESTS MADE HIM CUT DOWN TREES INDISCRIMINATELY. THE CUTTING DOWN OF TREES IS CALLED DEFORESTATION. THIS DISTURBES THE BALANCE IN NATURE. IF THE ECOSYSTEMS ARE LEFT UNDISTURBED, NATURE MAINTAINS THE BALANCE. A SPECIES THAT NO LONGER EXISTS IS CALLED EXTINCT. MANY OTHER ANIMALS THAT DEPEND ON PLANTS ALSO DISAPPEARED. EVERY YEAR WE SEE MANY INSTANCES OF PLANTS OR ANIMALS SPECIES BECOMING EXTINCT DUE TO HUMAN ACTIVITIES. WE MAY BE ABLE TO FIND A SUBSISTUTE FOR WOOD, COAL OR FOOD ITEMS, BUT WE CAN NEVER REPLACE AN EXTINCT SPECIES. SOME SPECIES ARE ENDANGERED BECAUSE THEIR NUMBER HAS GONE DOWN TO SUCH A LEVEL THT THEY COULD EASILY BECOME EXTINCT. WHY ARE FORESTS CALLED AS GREEN LUNGS The plants provide oxygen for animal respiration and also absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In this way plants help in maintaining the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Forests also influence climate, water cycle and air-quality. That is why forests are called “green lungs”.

The Future of Forestry: Future Forest Management in the Pacific Northwest

58:30
In the spring of 2009, the Denman Forestry Issues Series was presented by the College of Forest Resources (now the School of Forest Resources in the new College of the Environment) at the University of Washington. The series featured 10 professors and a post-doctoral scientist from Forest Resources exploring the "Future of Forestry in the Pacific Northwest."Session 3 was devoted to examining the future of forest management in the Pacific Northwest. Professor of Forest Economics Bruce Lippke shows how wood products can be substituted for fossil fuel using products like concrete and steel, and be used for carbon sequestration and biofuels. Professor of Trade Analysis John Perez-Garcia speaks about the future of the sawmilling industry. Associate Professor of Forest Ecology and Sustainable Forestry and Director of the Center for Sustainable Forestry at Pack Forest Greg Ettl discusses the contrast between forest certification and regulation on multiple-purpose management. Finally, Professor of Operations Research Dave Briggs shares new precision tools for forest management such as remote sensing and Lidar and acoustic techniques for determining tree stiffness and density. The Denman Forestry Issues series is intended to educate the public about topical issues in forest resources in the Pacific Northwest, as well as provide information to natural resource specialists and students.More than half of Washington state is forested, so trees are a familiar sight for its residents, particularly in western Washington. Our forests provide lumber and other forest products, clean water for drinking, salmon and wildlife habitat, as well as aesthetic and recreational opportunities. Forests must continue to fulfill these needs for society, but how can we ensure they do so in a way that is sustainable for future generations in the face of population increase, increasing urbanization, declining forest health, global warming and other threats to the forest? The science and practice of forestry is very complicated and multifaceted, and is always changing. The dynamics of land ownership further complicates forest management. Forests and forestry will continue to be important in the future of Washington state, but both must be managed sustainably. Research and education conducted by faculty and students at the University of Washington will help us accomplish this. Primitive Skills | Shelter, Food and Water Procurement

17:52
For great woodsman gear visit http://4directionsbushcraft.com/ In this video I take a day out and practice my primitive skills with gathering wild edibles such as Sassafras, Wood Sorrel and Greenbrier to name a few. I make a primitive minnow trap and capture a crawdad. These would be able to feed me if I was in a survival situation. I also find a all natural shelter within a rock overhang and a downed tree. This type of shelter did not take any time or energy to make and would keep me dry, warm and out of the wind. I was able to make a friction fire with a hand drill set and would then be able to procure water and cook food. The hand drill is Yucca stalk and basswood hearth board. For a container I boil water in an all natural container. Making a container with all natural resources is difficult and takes a lot of time. If you can find a natural container and stone boil in it that will save you time and energy. This method works when you have a smaller natural container. If your container is to large it will be harder to bring the water to a full boil. Within the Eastern woodlands there are many resource you can utilize if you know what your looking for. Even though I do bring my pack on long hikes like this I love to practice my primitive skills and use nothing out of my pack, this not only keeps me humble but allows me the confidence to know I can survive and thrive in the woods with nothing but my clothes on my back. Martin Institute Professor of Engineering, University of Maryland College Park http://youtu.be/QzIegwxpclY#t=30m57s A clean, reliable fresh water supply is critical to human life. Every day, Americans rely on fresh water supplies to irrigate crops, support manufacturing, and generate power, in addition to keeping safe drinking water flowing from the tap. While essential to life itself, water can also cause harm. Aging and unreliable infrastructure makes communities susceptible to deadly floods and contaminated drinking water. Proper vision and strategy are essential for using, protecting, and managing our water resources.
