Does quantum entanglement make faster-than-light communication possible? What is NOT random? http://bit.ly/NOTrandoVe First, I know this video is not easy to understand. Thank you for taking the time to attempt to understand it. I've been working on this for over six months over which time my understanding has improved. Quantum entanglement and spooky action at a distance are still debated by professors of quantum physics (I know because I discussed this topic with two of them). Does hidden information (called hidden variables by physicists) exist? If it does, the experiment violating Bell inequalities indicates that hidden variables must update faster than light - they would be considered 'non-local'. On the other hand if you don't consider the spins before you make the measurement then you could simply say hidden variables don't exist and whenever you measure spins in the same direction you always get opposite results, which makes sense since angular momentum must be conserved in the universe. Everyone agrees that quantum entanglement does not allow information to be transmitted faster that light. There is no action either detector operator could take to signal the other one - regardless of the choice of measurement direction, the measured spins are random with 50/50 probability of up/down. Einstein‘s „spooky action at a distance“ persists even at high accelerations, researchers of the Austrian Academy of Sciences were able to show in a new experiment. A source of entangled photon pairs was exposed to massive stress: The photons‘ entanglement survived the drop in a fall tower as well as 30 times the Earth’s gravitational acceleration in a centrifuge. This was reported by IQOQI Vienna in the most recent issue of „Nature Communications“. This kind of experiments helps deepen our understanding of quantum mechanics and at the same time gives valuable results for quantum experiments in space. Quantum entanglement is a physical phenomenon that occurs when pairs or groups of particles are generated or interact in ways such that the quantum state of each particle cannot be described independently of the others, even when the particles are separated by a large distance – instead, a quantum state must be described for the system as a whole. Measurements of physical properties such as position, momentum, spin, and polarization, performed on entangled particles are found to be appropriately correlated. For example, if a pair of particles are generated in such a way that their total spin is known to be zero, and one particle is found to have clockwise spin on a certain axis, the spin of the other particle, measured on the same axis, will be found to be counterclockwise, as to be expected due to their entanglement. However, this behavior gives rise to paradoxical effects: any measurement of a property of a particle can be seen as acting on that particle (e.g., by collapsing a number of superposed states) and will change the original quantum property by some unknown amount; and in the case of entangled particles, such a measurement will be on the entangled system as a whole. It thus appears that one particle of an entangled pair "knows" what measurement has been performed on the other, and with what outcome, even though there is no known means for such information to be communicated between the particles, which at the time of measurement may be separated by arbitrarily large distances. Such phenomena were the subject of a 1935 paper by Albert Einstein, Boris Podolsky, and Nathan Rosen, and several papers by Erwin Schrödinger shortly thereafter, describing what came to be known as the EPR paradox. Einstein and others considered such behavior to be impossible, as it violated the local realist view of causality (Einstein referring to it as "spooky action at a distance") and argued that the accepted formulation of quantum mechanics must therefore be incomplete. Later, however, the counterintuitive predictions of quantum mechanics were verified experimentally. Experiments have been performed involving measuring the polarization or spin of entangled particles in different directions, which – by producing violations of Bell's inequality – demonstrate statistically that the local realist view cannot be correct. This has been shown to occur even when the measurements are performed more quickly than light could travel between the sites of measurement: there is no lightspeed or slower influence that can pass between the entangled particles. Recent experiments have measured entangled particles within less than one hundredth of a percent of the travel time of light between them. According to the formalism of quantum theory, the effect of measurement happens instantly. It is not possible, however, to use this effect to transmit classical information at faster-than-light speeds (see Faster-than-light § Quantum mechanics). Quantum entanglement is an area of extremely active research by the physics community, and its effects have been demonstrated experimentally with photons, neutrinos, electrons, molecules the size of buckyballs, and even small diamonds. Research is also focused on the utilization of entanglement effects in communication and computation.

For the present discussion, we will just concentrate on only one of its many mind boggling results. Quantum theory brought something so immaterial as "consciousness" into the realm of physics. Consciousness has remained for centuries a topic of discussion in philosophy, spirituality and theology. Modern science has come a long way, gallantly fighting its many battles, freeing itself from the shackles of religious dogma, to find itself back to square one- Consciousness- the domain of spirituality. Interesting it would be to note, that this enigma of consciousness didn't pop out of neuroscience or any other branch of life sciences. No! Rather from the foundation of all sciences- Physics. So all of the study of the natural world is summed up in Biology, which in turn rests on Chemistry, as all biological processes are reduced to chemical reactions and then the study of chemical reactions neccessitates the study of atoms, electrons and so on. This is Quantum Physics- the science of the basic building blocks of the universe. So you see 'consciousness' has appeared as an inexplicable enigma from the foundation of the universe and its study. Something so immaterial, subjective, human and life-like like 'consciousness' somehow affects the quantum world- the lifeless, material building blocks of the entire universe. Michael Talbot discusses the holographic model and the "implicate order" model of quantum physics. He proposes that these two models combined explain many unsolved mysteries in both brain functioning (such as memory and vision) and quantum physics (such as the problem of hidden variables and quantum interconnectedness). Quantum entanglement is a physical phenomenon that occurs when pairs (or groups) of particles are generated or interact in ways such that the quantum state of each member must subsequently be described relative to the other. It is one of the concepts that led Albert Einstein to dislike the theory of Quantum Mechanics. Along with his co-workers, Boris Podolsky and Nathan Rosen, Einstein used entanglement to try to show weaknesses in quantum mechanics. Einstein called entanglement "spooky action at a distance". He said this because he did not believe that quantum particles could affect one another faster than the speed of light. He tried to show that this weird effect means that quantum mechanics gives an incomplete picture of what really goes on and that in the future it will be taken care of with extra "hidden" variables. Erwin Schrödinger talked about entanglement in the same article where he described Schrödinger's cat. Years later, John Bell showed with his theorem that we can tell if this "spooky action at a distance" is real or not. After that, experiments using Bell's theorem proved that entanglement actually happens between tiny particles. In this article he proposed that a new model of unified physics might be generated by using simple computational algorithms, only in 3D instead of 1. We continue our journey into the law of attraction and any possible relationship to quantum theory by considering quantum entanglement. Everything in the universe is made of sub atomic particles separated by huge amounts of empty space. Although it is not entirely empty because energy can travel through it. When a subatomic particle such as a photon, neutrino, electron, or even a larger molecule, meet another particle then from this moment they share the same physical properties, even over huge distances. This is known as entanglement, and any physical change in one particle will immediately affect the other at the speed of light, or possibly even faster. It is as if the other particle somehow knows what its partner or partners are doing at any particular moment. If this is not complicated enough the results of experimental observations are changed in some way by the act of observation. It is as if the particles know that they are being observed or measured. Scientists dismiss this possibility of observer interference and explain it by interference caused by their equipment. The debate continues with strong views on all sides. Einstein, Podolski, and Rosen published a paper on this curious behaviour of particles in 1935 which is now known as the EPR paradox, taken from their names. They were not able to explain their observations. Einstein believed such particle behaviour was impossible and famously referred to it as “spooky action at a distance.” Schrödinger, of dead cat fame, also wrote several papers on this subject shortly afterwards. Not surprisingly ever since quantum entanglement has been the subject of many further experiments of increasing complexity and decreasing understandability. Quantum entanglement is at the very edge of human understanding and current research includes the Hadron Collider experiments where subatomic particles are collided at speeds approaching the speed of light. Their findings will have a huge impact on our understanding of the universe and enormous implications for us all. Perhaps the Hadron conclusions might shed light on the law of attraction and even herald the introduction of teleportation. I do not know how long we will have to wait. As Richard Feynman put it, "I think I can safely say that no one understands quantum mechanics." This is because observations of experiments have led us to a theory that contradicts common sense. The wave function contains all the information that is knowable about a particle, yet it can only be used to calculate probabilities of where a particle will likely turn up. It can't give us an actual account of where the particle went or where it will be at some later time. Some have suggested that this theory is incomplete. Maybe something is going on beneath the radar of standard quantum theory and somehow producing the appearance of randomness and uncertainty without actually being random or uncertain. Theories of this sort are called hidden variable theories because they propose entities that aren't observable. One such theory is pilot wave theory, first proposed by de Broglie, but later developed by Bohm. The idea here is that a particle oscillates, creating a wave. It then interacts with the wave and this complex interaction determines its motion. Experiments using silicone oil droplets on a vibrating bath provide a remarkable physical realization of pilot wave theories. They give us a physical picture of what the quantum world might look like if this is what's going on - and this theory is still deterministic. Quantum Teleportation, Entanglement, and the Magic of Atoms

This episode of science news discusses a newly discovered method of teleporting digital information. Article: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/06/130606140844.htm --Background-- Quantum Teleportation has been a very important step in information technology that has continued to elude us. The general idea of quantum teleportation is to seamlessly send information from one part of the universe to another instantaneously without it actually having to travel. Now although over short distances digital information may seem to travel instantly they are actually travelling at the speed of light; so if you had something 5.87*10^12 miles away (1 light year) it would take one year for that information to go from point A to point B. Now with this new experimental discovery we can transmit information over that distance instantly; no matter how far away it is. It has been known for a while now that quantum teleportation is possible; but testing methods were never very reliable or could handle large amounts of data until now. --Old Method-- In 2006, researchers at the Neils Borh Institute successfully teleported light between gas atoms. This is possible due to the idea of Quantum Entanglement. In very simple terms this is the idea that if you bond or chemically react two atoms together and then separate them there is a "magical" connection between them no matter how far apart they are. Now with this connection established, if you do something to change the charge direction or quantum state of one atom there is a predictable effect or change on the second atom instantly. Now with new experiments we are able to teleport information between not just two atoms but two gaseous clouds with billions of atoms which allows us to transmit much more data; and amazingly when they found the correct method it has succeed not only once, or twice; but every single time. --New Method-- The procedure for this experiment is to have two closed glass containers that are not connected with gas inside each of them. Then a laser is shot through both containers which appear to "synchronize" the clouds together. Then one container is placed into a chamber with magnetic field, and the other container is placed in a chamber with a very sensitive photon detector. So what these scientists then do is fire a laser at the first container which makes the electrons in the outermost layer of the gas atoms point in-line with the magnetic field like a compass. When this is happening both gas clouds are emitting photons or packets of energy in the form of light. So scientists can use the photon detector around the second container to determine its magnetic alignment and how it directly correlates to the change in the first container. Now keeping in mind how amazing this unintuitive teleportation of information is; scientists are even able to do this at room temperature. This meaning that the gas atoms are traveling at 200 meters/second or 447 miles/hour and every time they hit the side of the glass container their information is lost. Fortunately scientists discovered a paraffin like substance to coat the inside of the container so when a collision happens no data is lost which leads to their near-perfect success rate. --Future Developments-- Now we know roughly how this procedure works lets discuss what this discovery means and why its such a big deal. This discovery is essential for long-distance communication. One specific application would be sending data from satellites going into deep space like Voyager 1. Which as of March 20 is the first manmade object to leave our solar system after a long 35 year journey. Right now Voyager 1 is over 18,508,840,000 km away, and takes over 34 hours for light to travel from the sun to voyager 1 and then back; in order for it to give us the information it collects. Not only does this new method cut that growing 34 hour time requirement into an instant; but this new method secures that transferred data. Often data sent through space needs to be adjusted when decoded because variable solar radiation can alter the encoded data; but with this new method data can be instantly duplicated from deep space into our earth-based lab stations with no contact to outer radiation. Now currently this method may not seem pertinent but as time goes on if we ever want humans to voyage into space we need to utilize this new method as a reliable means of communication with the voyagers.

Quantum mechanics (QM -- also known as quantum physics, or quantum theory) is a branch of physics which deals with physical phenomena at nanoscopic scales where the action is on the order of the Planck constant. It departs from classical mechanics primarily at the quantum realm of atomic and subatomic length scales. Quantum mechanics provides a mathematical description of much of the dual particle-like and wave-like behavior and interactions of energy and matter. Quantum mechanics provides a substantially useful framework for many features of the modern periodic table of elements including the behavior of atoms during chemical bonding and has played a significant role in the development of many modern technologies. In advanced topics of quantum mechanics, some of these behaviors are macroscopic (see macroscopic quantum phenomena) and emerge at only extreme (i.e., very low or very high) energies or temperatures (such as in the use of superconducting magnets). For example, the angular momentum of an electron bound to an atom or molecule is quantized. In contrast, the angular momentum of an unbound electron is not quantized. In the context of quantum mechanics, the wave--particle duality of energy and matter and the uncertainty principle provide a unified view of the behavior of photons, electrons, and other atomic-scale objects. The mathematical formulations of quantum mechanics are abstract. A mathematical function, the wavefunction, provides information about the probability amplitude of position, momentum, and other physical properties of a particle. Mathematical manipulations of the wavefunction usually involve bra--ket notation which requires an understanding of complex numbers and linear functionals. The wavefunction formulation treats the particle as a quantum harmonic oscillator, and the mathematics is akin to that describing acoustic resonance. Many of the results of quantum mechanics are not easily visualized in terms of classical mechanics. For instance, in a quantum mechanical model the lowest energy state of a system, the ground state, is non-zero as opposed to a more "traditional" ground state with zero kinetic energy (all particles at rest). Instead of a traditional static, unchanging zero energy state, quantum mechanics allows for far more dynamic, chaotic possibilities, according to John Wheeler. The earliest versions of quantum mechanics were formulated in the first decade of the 20th century. About this time, the atomic theory and the corpuscular theory of light (as updated by Einstein)[1] first came to be widely accepted as scientific fact; these latter theories can be viewed as quantum theories of matter and electromagnetic radiation, respectively. Early quantum theory was significantly reformulated in the mid-1920s by Werner Heisenberg, Max Born and Pascual Jordan, (matrix mechanics); Louis de Broglie and Erwin Schrödinger (wave mechanics); and Wolfgang Pauli and Satyendra Nath Bose (statistics of subatomic particles). Moreover, the Copenhagen interpretation of Niels Bohr became widely accepted. By 1930, quantum mechanics had been further unified and formalized by the work of David Hilbert, Paul Dirac and John von Neumann[2] with a greater emphasis placed on measurement in quantum mechanics, the statistical nature of our knowledge of reality, and philosophical speculation about the role of the observer. Quantum mechanics has since permeated throughout many aspects of 20th-century physics and other disciplines including quantum chemistry, quantum electronics, quantum optics, and quantum information science. Quantum mechanics is the branch of physics relating to the very small. It results in what may appear to be some very strange conclusions about the physical world. At the scale of atoms and electrons, many of the equations of classical mechanics, which describe how things move at everyday sizes and speeds, cease to be useful. In classical mechanics, objects exist in a specific place at a specific time. However, in quantum mechanics, objects instead exist in a haze of probability; they have a certain chance of being at point A, another chance of being at point B and so on. Three revolutionary principles Quantum mechanics (QM) developed over many decades, beginning as a set of controversial mathematical explanations of experiments that the math of classical mechanics could not explain. It began at the turn of the 20th century, around the same time that Albert Einstein published his theory of relativity, a separate mathematical revolution in physics that describes the motion of things at high speeds. Unlike relativity, however, the origins of QM cannot be attributed to any one scientist. Rather, multiple scientists contributed to a foundation of three revolutionary principles that gradually gained acceptance and experimental verification between 1900 and 1930. They are: Quantized properties: Certain properties, such as position, speed and color, can sometimes only occur in specific, set amounts, much like a dial that "clicks" from number to number. This challenged a fundamental assumption of classical mechanics, which said that such properties should exist on a smooth, continuous spectrum. To describe the idea that some properties "clicked" like a dial with specific settings, scientists coined the word "quantized." Particles of light: Light can sometimes behave as a particle. This was initially met with harsh criticism, as it ran contrary to 200 years of experiments showing that light behaved as a wave; much like ripples on the surface of a calm lake. Light behaves similarly in that it bounces off walls and bends around corners, and that the crests and troughs of the wave can add up or cancel out. Added wave crests result in brighter light, while waves that cancel out produce darkness. A light source can be thought of as a ball on a stick being rhythmically dipped in the center of a lake. The color emitted corresponds to the distance between the crests, which is determined by the speed of the ball's rhythm. Waves of matter: Matter can also behave as a wave. Below there are suggested questions, recommended sources and my social media accounts: QUESTIONS: Questions that require less research: 1. This is our first real example of quantization, the phenomena that gives quantum mechanics it’s name. Here’s what it means. In the classical case of magnets going through a Stern Gerlach machine, the magnets can end up any where in the range. But in quantum mechanics, its can only be exactly up or down, these discrete values rather than a continuous range in between. This sort of quantization really bothered physicists. Can you understand why? And is there any classical physics phenomenon that also has sort of quantization? 2. Do you think that eventually all quantities in physics can be explained in terms of deeper physics? Are there any examples of quantities that later on did get explained through a more encompassing theory? 3. How can you use the Stern-Gerlach machine to measure spin in the ‘forward-backward’ direction? 4. Why do half the particles go left, half right at 4:24? Questions that (probably) require research: 5. Electrons are so-called spin 1/2 particles. Are there any other spin types? What determines what spin a particle will have? 7. How does spin relate to the Pauli exclusion principle? 8. Explain how the Stern-Gerlach machine works 9. Is light polarization a type of spin? What are arguments for and against this? What spin does a photon have (spin 1/2, spin 1 etc)? 10. Why is it that charged particles moving causes magnetic fields- according to Einstein? (Look up relativity and electromagnetism) 11. What’s wrong with saying the electron is infinitely small? What experiments measure the electrons size? Are protons also infinitely small? 12. Find other reasons we don’t believe electrons are actually spinning. (An interesting one is about rotating a spin particle 360 degrees, and not getting back the exact same wavefunction.) 13. a) What is the Bloch Sphere, and why can we use it to represent spin? How do you visualise the spin left state on it? how about spin forward? (http://comp.uark.edu/~jgeabana/blocha... , note that a 2-level system is any particle that only has two options when measured (eg only up or down). |0) and |1) are the generic labels we’ll put on these options) b) Also, How do you write spin forward in terms of up and down (i.e. |forward)=a|up)+b|down))? You will probably need to look this up, so it’s useful to know the spin “up/down”ness is usually called spin in the z direction, spin “left/right”ness is spin in the x direction, and spin “forward/backward” is spin in the y direction. You can figure this out by looking at the Bloch sphere. 14. Magnetic Resonance Imaginging (MRI) is an important clinical technic that completely relies on manipulating spin. Quantum Physics of Atoms, Molecules, Solids, Nuclei, and Particle Physics- Eisberg and Resnick, the chapters of angular momentum and spin. This is a good one if you already know basic classical electromagnetism. Don't buy it, just visit your local university library and just read it there. Sneaking a Look at God's Cards - Ghirardi. This is one of my favourite quantum books. It talks about the Stern-Gerlach experiment. Wikipedia or Scholarpedia. These are always a good place to start- though sometimes they can throw you into the maths. Don't panic if you don't get all of it. Just try to glean the main idea, and that's more than enough to report here. Hopefully then others can help with any details that were confusing. The Story of Spin.
