Do you sometimes struggle to begin writing an essay when taking an exam? Good news! There is an important writing skill that will help you improve your essay introductions. This technique is called "paraphrasing", and it means rewriting something using different words. In this lesson, I will teach you how to paraphrase successfully and how to change essay questions into your own words. These skills are very useful for university and high school students, as well as any students writing English proficiency exams like the TOEFL or IELTS. TAKE THE QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/how-to-write-a-good-essay-paraphrasing-the-question/ WATCH NEXT: Essay Writing – 6 ways to compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8WSzwBD7GQ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video I'm going to teach you something very important for if you're taking any type of test that has a writing component. So, if you are taking the IELTS, the TOEFL, the CELPIP, even just a university test, it can be any type of test, but if you're asked to write something like an essay or a paragraph, this video is for you. Okay? So I'm going to teach you a very important skill that will help improve your marks when it comes to writing on tests. So, let's get started. So, I have here an essay question. This question is actually... I've seen it on the IELTS. You know, you have similar types of questions on the TOEFL, sometimes in university. The question is this: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country. Do you agree or disagree?" Or maybe: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" So, this is an example of a question you might be asked. Now, a problem a lot of students have is in their answer to this question. They see this, and they think: "Okay, education is the most important factor in the development of a country, yes, I agree." So then they... Or: "I disagree", and they start writing. And what do they write? Usually the very first thing students will write is this: "I agree that education is the single most important factor in the development of a country because..." So, what is the problem with this? Is there any problem to start off your essay with something like this, or to start off your answer? There's a big problem. So I want you to take a moment and think: "What could be the problem with starting your essay off with this sentence?" Okay, well, if you noticed, you have here the word: "education, education, is, is, the single most important, most important factor". If you notice, these are the same. They're the exact same, except for: "I agree that" and "because". The student, here, has used the exact same wording that is in the question. So, if you do this on the IELTS-and many students do this, same with on the TOEFL-you actually will lose marks, and same with in university, because you're not showing your abilities; you're just copying what somebody else has said or what the essay question is. So, in this video, I'm going to show you first off... First off, I'm going to tell you: Don't do this, don't copy. And I'm going to teach you ways in order to improve yourself and your answer by changing this wording. How can you change your introduction so it's different than what the question is? Okay? So, let's look at how to make these changes. Okay, so what we are going to do in order to change the question into a proper answer that doesn't just copy the question, is we are going to paraphrase. So, the word here is: "paraphrase". This might be a new word for you. What does it mean to paraphrase something? Well, when we paraphrase, it means we take a sentence that, you know... We take somebody else's sentence and we change it into our own words. Okay? So, we change the words of a sentence, we also change maybe the sentence structure, but we keep all the same meaning. Okay? So, the meaning from the sentence you copy, it stays the same, same meaning, but different words and different sentence structure. Okay? So it's in your words, but this other person's meaning. So, we are going to paraphrase this example of a question into our own words. So, first we're going to look at how to do that using vocabulary and synonyms. So, we have here the same question: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country." How can we put this into new words or our own words that keep the same meaning? Well, we can use synonyms. So, this might be a new word for you, too. A "synonym". "Synonyms" are words that have the same meaning, but are different words.

In which John Green teaches you about the United States Constitution. During and after the American Revolutionary War, the government of the new country operated under the Articles of Confederation. While these Articles got the young nation through its war with England, they weren't of much use when it came to running a country. So, the founding fathers decided try their hand at nation-building, and they created the Constitution of the United States, which you may remember as the one that says We The People at the top. John will tell you how the convention came together, some of the compromises that had to be made to pass this thing, and why it's very lucky that the framers installed a somewhat reasonable process for making changes to the thing. Do you believe that people can foresee the future? Is time travel possible? Do you know that there are many things that cannot be explained? Life sometimes brings us strange surprises that are impossible to explain. We at Bright Side never cease to be amazed by the coincidences that occur in this world which demonstrate just how unpredictable and mysterious it is. We've prepared a few bright examples from the history that will prove that time travel exists. Also, we have prepared a bonus for you. It will make you believe that there is something out there in the universe that we don’t know about yet. Stay with us and dive into the world of the unexplained. TIMESTAMPS Is time travel possible? 0:55 A premonition of the Titanic 1:33 Neighbors living in different centuries 2:15 The Tragedy on the Hoover Dam 2:55 The cars that found each other 3:34 Coincidences in the biographies of Lincoln and Kennedy 4:22 The first and last soldiers 5:14 Rumors of Edgar Allan Poe’s time machine 5:42 Unlucky brothers 6:23 Anthony Hopkins and a rare book 6:58 A special name for the Roman Empire 7:33 Donald Trump’s election victory in The Simpsons 8:08 Bonus: Almost like reincarnation 8:37 SUMMARY - Jennifer Lawrence is not only the spitting image of a silver age Egyptian actress Zubaida Tharwat, but also they have similarities in their careers and lives. - 14 years before the sinking of the Titanic, fantasy writer Morgan Robertson wrote the novella Futility, which told the story of a ship that was sunk — and which bore the name The Titan. - The famous composer George Handel was a neighbor of a famous guitarist Jimi Hendrix — admittedly, they were separated by two centuries. They were both incredible musicians. - The Hoover dam, located in the USA, is believed to be one of the most mysterious in the world. Over than 100 workers died while constructing it. - In 1895, in the state of Ohio, two cars collided. During this period, automobile production was only just beginning to take off, and there were only these two cars in all of Ohio. - A multitude of strange coincidences exists in the biographies of two American presidents: Abraham Lincoln and John Kennedy. - The British Army during World War 1 lost about 673,375 soldiers that were declared to be dead and missing. The graves of the first and last British soldiers killed in this war are located 6 m from each other. - In the book The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, written by Edgar Allan Poe, we learn the story of four sailors who survived the sinking of their ship. 46 years after the book was written, an actual boat did sink. - In July 1975, Erskine Lawrence Ebbin was hit by a taxi. Almost a year before, Erskine’s brother — who was also 17 — was killed. He was riding the same moped, and he was killed by a taxi as well. Behind the wheel was the same driver. - Anthony Hopkins urgently needed to get hold of a book so that he could study for a role he was starring in: The Girl from Petrovka, written by George Feifer. - One of the most powerful empires of the ancient world began and ended with the name "Romulus." - The creators of The Simpsons made an episode in the year 2000, which made a joke about Donald Trump becoming the president of the United States. Could they ever have guessed that one day it would become true? BONUS Enzo Ferrari, who founded the Ferrari Company, died in 1988. About a month later, the footballer Mesut Özil was born. Looking at their portraits, you could be forgiven for thinking they are twin brothers. Do you wanna know who will be the love of your life? We're definitely all curious in that way! But what if we said that you could find out a lot about your future life partner just through your name? Sounds intriguing, right? So grab a pen and a piece of paper because it's test time! TIMESTAMPS: Question #1 Why did your parents choose the name you have now? 1:08 Question #2: How long is your name? 2:08 Question #3: What is it the first letter of your name? 2:51 Question #4: Is your name popular? 3:46 Question #5: Do you have a nickname? 4:29 Question #6: How do you feel about performing? 5:26 Question #7: How good was you at math? 6:15 Question #8: How do you usually feel when you're watching a highly emotional movie? 6:56 Question #9: What's the most important thing in a relationship for you? 8:01 Question #10: Have you ever been heartbroken? 8:42 #relationship #soulmate #nametest Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music?feature=blog SUMMARY: - If you scored 10–17 points, you're pretty practical and reserved. You're independent to a fault and can do anything you put your mind to. Even though you aren't really looking for anything serious, you still wouldn't mind a partner who's as strong and responsible as you are but who can add a bit of spontaneity to your life at the same time. - If you got 18–26 points, you're probably a perfectionist. You like things done in a certain way and order. And your love life is the same: you know what works for you and what doesn't. All you need is someone who matches the image of the perfect man or woman in your head, someone as determined, calm, and idealistic as you are. - 27–35 points suggests that you’re a kind and social butterfly. Your perfect man or woman should be as laid-back as you are, someone who is witty, funny, and ready to explore the world with you. - If you got 36–44 points, your love life is definitely very important to you. You know how much time and effort relationships consume, and you're willing to do everything necessary for someone who's worth it. You're also open to new people and experiences, which means you'll find your special someone in no time! - Finally, if your results are higher than 44 points, you're highly emotional and very romantic. Your emotions are very bright and colorful: you cry easily, laugh easily, and tend to have a positive outlook on life! If anyone knows what love is, it's you. Therefore, you need someone who will treasure you and your huge, caring, kind heart. In this episode of Open Door, Grammy-winning record producer and DJ Zedd gives an in-depth tour of his $16 million mansion in Benedict Canyon, an area of Los Angeles that's near Sherman Oaks and northwest of Beverly Hills. Zedd's self-decorated home is 9,500 square feet with views of the canyon and tons of full-length glass windows. See photos and read the full interview here: http://archdg.co/x3PLMMq The house is structured into three sections: work, living, and sleep. The work section has Zedd's recording studio and an unfinished gym. The driveway leads into the front entrance, which crosses a moat. A huge wall with cubbies holds art, awards, and silly memorabilia. For instance, Zedd's Grammy sits next to a poop emoji. At the end of a corridor, before going outside, guests can pick their favorite flavor of the rainbow from the Skittles machine. Zedd also has a server room and a "Costco Room" that contains just about anything he would need if he weren't able to leave the house for a long time. The bathrooms feature automated blinds that can sometimes surprise the person taking the shower early in the morning. The remote-controlled curtains in Zedd's bedroom make him the happiest of any feature in the house. Outside, the pool has a hidden jacuzzi / hot tub that's revealed when the pool's water level drops. The kitchen has four built-in hibachi grills, a pot filler above the stovetop (which Zedd says is the reason he bought the house), and built-in vacuums. We all know that the easter island heads have bodies – that’s not a mystery at all. But how did the easter island population build hundreds of statues? Scientists have recently solved this mystery and discovered where these people disappeared to and why. For many decades, people's minds have been occupied with the mystery of Easter Island. A remote piece of volcanic soil, far away in the Pacific Ocean... But our planet hosts thousands of such lonely islands, what is so particular about this one? The mystery is concealed not in the island itself but giant stone statues covering it. Who created the world-famous huge stone heads? Did they serve any specific purpose? Where did their creators arrive from and where did they disappear? Well, it seems the answer is finally just around the corner! TIMESTAMPS What do we know about Easter Island? 1:05 Amazing facts about Easter Island 2:18 How have the statues been moved around the island? 5:25 How could create Easter Island monuments? 7:24 What happened to people on Easter Island? 8:09 SUMMARY - Where is Easter Island located? Rapa Nui (which is the name given to Easter Island by its first inhabitants) is the territory of Chile and is situated in the southern Pacific Ocean. And it is so, so far that you can easily consider it one of the most distant places on the world's map. It lies 1,200 miles away from Pitcairn, which is its closest neighbor. - What's the main secret of the statues? Most statues (834 out of 887) were carved from the material called tuff which is, in fact, compressed volcanic ash. Curiously, all the statues except one group face inland. It means their backs are turned to the ocean. Perhaps the reason for that was the belief that the statues were the protectors of the villagers that's why they overlooked the settlement. The only statues not fitting into this pattern can be found at Ahu Akivi, a sacred place for the people of Rapa Nui. - Theories about how the statues had been moved. One of the most popular ones among the lovers of mysteries was the belief that the statues had been created and moved by aliens. But even if you like this theory, we are sorry to debunk it. The stone the statues were built from originates from the island itself. The birthplace of most of the material was an extinct volcano situated in the north-east of Easter Island and not another planet. - A new study about the island. A new study has been conducted recently to specify the maximum number of the inhabitants in the heyday of the island's civilization. The results arrived, and they were quite unexpected. It turned out that as many as 17 and a half thousand people could comfortably live on the island. At least 19 percent of the land could be covered with the fields of sweet potatoes that used to be the main source of food for the population. What is more, the islanders consumed quite a lot of seafood and fish. - Why did people on Easter Island disappear? At first, it was believed that the reason for such a decrease of the population was an ecocide. The natives cut out large forests and palm trees making spare room for moving the statues around as well as agriculture. They thought the trees were going to grow back fast enough. It was a misleading concept. The deterioration of the environment resulted in hunger. And this, in turn, led to wars and cannibalism. Nowadays, however, such a theory has been proven wrong. First of all, Rapa Nui inhabitants seemed to be very talented agricultural engineers. They deliberately fertilized the fields with the volcanic rock. In fact, another research has shown that people had been living on the island for many centuries. And the population only started to decrease when Europeans began visiting. A lot of the times your brain “feels” way younger or older than you are. That's called mental age. Do you wanna know yours? Lucky for you, Bright Side put together a simple test that will help you figure out if you're a carefree child, an old and wise sage or just exactly as mentally “old” as you are. Just answer our questions, write down your points for every answer, add them all up and get your results! But enough talking, let's begin! If you got 7-12 points, mentally you're just under 20 years old. It doesn't matter what your passport says – you’re a carefree teenager at heart! If you're way older than 20, congratulations – you've managed to carry this constant feeling of enthusiasm and love for life through all these years. Keep shining! If your result is 13–20 points, you are 20–29 years old. You are active, creative, and full of life, but you can already call yourself an adult. Childhood and teenage years are over, but you took the best from them and left all the unnecessary stuff behind. It doesn't mean that you're not having fun though – your life is just as exciting as it was. If all of your points added up to 21–28 points, your mental age is 30–39 years. You’re still active and curious about new things and ideas, but you are already responsible and thoughtful. If you think about it, that's the perfect balance between the children's joy for life and adults' independence. The golden mean at its best! If your total number of points is 29–35, you are 40–49 years old. You're mature and experienced, and you know exactly how to live your life. You have no time for nonsense – you're determined and hardworking. You know what you want and how to get it. Continue to be a true inspiration for everyone around! 36–40 points mean that your mental age is over 50 years. And that's not a bad thing at all! On the contrary, you are wise and calm. You get what life is all about, and you highly appreciate comfort. You're the person everyone goes for advice, plus you can always be trusted. These are some rare qualities today, so your friends must protect you at all costs. So what’s your mental age and how close is it to your real age? Creative Writing -http://www.singlishtoenglish.com/creative-writing/ - How to write with flair There are many different types of writing out there. For the purpose of this video, we will look at creative writing and the simple steps to take in writing a creative essay. What is creative writing? It is a broad statement that covers every form of narrative writing from poetry to feature articles in newspapers to novels - the list is endless. Loosely put, it excludes anything academic and technical. Let's look at how to write a creative essay: First step: Choose your subject. When choosing a subject, pick something you and others may find interesting. It may not have to be a subject that you know well, though that helps! If the subject is something you find interesting, but do not know much about, research it! That will be Step 2: All good writers research the background to their essay/story/novel, etc. If need be, talk to relevant authorities. Ask questions and learn more about the topic. Take some time and mull over your topic. Look at it from different perspectives. Write down all thoughts that occur to you on the subject, relevant or random, it does not matter. You can sift through it later and decide on what you want to use. You never know. You might end up with enough material for more than one essay. Onto the next step, Step 3, where you put down an outline of how, what, when, where and who your essay is all about. This will guide and keep you on the straight and narrow of the story without taking you down a meandering path. Then its time to flesh out these how, what, when, where and who questions as that will build the foundation of the story. Once you have the first 3 steps done, you can proceed to Step 4, writing the story. Using the outline you have set out, start with the introduction. In the introduction, the setting for the creative essay is established. Here is where you establish the place, time and scenery for the main subject of the essay. Next we come to the body of the essay. The plot of the essay is developed in the body. It can be made up of just one paragraph, in the case of a short story, or several paragraphs, when the story is longer. Each paragraph is to showcase one main idea. The movement from one paragraph to another has to be smooth and fluid without choppiness. This is where transitions come in useful. Briefly, transitions are words like 'yet', 'and', 'but' and so on. They allow the essay to flow seamlessly from one idea to another. They are usually used in the middle of a sentence. But, they can be used in the beginning to emphasise a point. I just did that. I used 'but' in the beginning of a sentence when it is usually used in the middle. This lays emphasis on the content of the sentence following the 'but' and shows the continuity of the thought process from the previous sentence. Just be careful not to over use transitions in your essay. Other transitions which we use all the time are words like 'however','also' and 'therefore'. There are many more transition words and I will get into grammar transitions more fully in another video. Finally, (there's a transition for you!) we come to the conclusion of the creative essay. The conclusion is where the whole plot comes together and is tidied up ...or not. That depends on you, the author, on how you want the essay to end. It can be neat and tidy, with a 'happily ever after' like fairy-tale ending or in can be a cliffhanger, where the ending is left shrouded in suspense. The ending or conclusion of your essay is important, so don't rush it or end it abruptly. It must leave a strong enough impact that the story remains in the reader's mind after he finishes reading it. Now that your creative essay is done, check it thoroughly for spelling and grammatical errors. Change whatever does not read or flow right. Think about the effect the essay will have on the reader. Ask someone else to proofread it for you. Very often we miss errors in our own writing that others will pick up. Once your essay is checked, proofread, corrected and checked again, it is done! Aquaman has left us pondering some pretty big questions! Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/ho3Hg6 Whether you saw Aquaman but were left with some lingering questions. Whether you were struck by the movie’s intense take on the character, or found it to be too campy for the DCEU, we here at ScreenRant have you covered. That’s right, ScreenRant is here to tackle all the nagging questions and unaddressed plot holes that have been keeping you awake at night. Sure, the cast was stacked, Momoa breathed new life into Aquaman’s gills and James Wan gave his all to a story that would have seemed unfilmable a mere ten years ago. But that doesn’t mean all is going swimmingly under the sea. So let’s put our fins together and try to solve some of the following issues. First and foremost, why is Arthur so powerful and what makes him a worthy king? He’s only half Atlantean but so many citizens of Atlantis seem to accept him as ruler. And on that note, why is Arthur the only one who talks to the fish? And as far as seafaring powers are concerned, how come Mera’s the only one we see controlling water? Plus, where did Atlanna’s agelessness come from? What’s going on with Orm’s war? How did others find the trident’s location without a map? What’s this seventh kingdom they mentioned? Why didn’t Orvax go ahead and off Arthur? And, geez, why aren’t humans the bad guys? Watch this video and let us know if you have any scrutinizing thoughts of your own. Let’s dive in together! Featuring: Entry 1 - How is Arthur so powerful? Entry 2 - Why is Arthur the only one who speaks "Fish"? Entry 3 - Why didn't Atlanna age? Entry 4 - Why can Mera alone control water? Entry 5 - What’s the deal with Orm’s war? Entry 6 - How did others find the trident’s location without the map? Entry 7 - What is the Seventh Kingdom? Entry 8 - Why didn't Orvax kill Arthur? Entry 9 - What makes Arthur a worthy king? Entry 10 - Why aren’t humans the bad guys? Writer and artist James Bridle uncovers a dark, strange corner of the internet, where unknown people or groups on YouTube hack the brains of young children in return for advertising revenue. From "surprise egg" reveals and the "Finger Family Song" to algorithmically created mashups of familiar cartoon characters in violent situations, these videos exploit and terrify young minds -- and they tell us something about where our increasingly data-driven world is headed. "We need to stop thinking about technology as a solution to all of our problems, but think of it as a guide to what those problems actually are, so we can start thinking about them properly and start to address them," Bridle says. https://www.floridainshorefishingcharters.com/ https://www.mosquitolagoonsightfishing.com/ http://www.drewcavanaughphotography.com/ Captain Drew Cavanaugh Central Florida Flats Fishing Guide ©2013 Drew Cavanaugh Photography November 24, 2013 Using my YouTube channel without a Google+ account for comments or questions: Unfortunately Google has removed the way we all use to post and respond to comments here on YouTube. Not just my channel or videos but apparently all of them. The saying "If it is not broke, then don't fix it", just went out the door. Looks like something that was working fine was messed with and is now broke. So the bad part for this channel and my videos are that at times questions and comments are raised or posted and it is sometimes several days or months later that either I or someone else chimes in. I understand that you want these answers sooner than later. Well it looks as if they, Google, has now archived those older comments after a certain time frame. They now want you to join Google+ and go through that doorway to speak. Which is fine for me to have a Google+ account, but I know and can tell by reading the thousands of articles over how people are not happy with that decision. So I have decided as for a better approach for me and my page, and for you, the viewer, to just email me with any questions you may have. That is, if you cannot respond on here just send me a message and I will do my best to answer your questions over any of the tutorials I have out there. So the bottom line is you do not need a Google+ account to ask me a question or to post a comment for me to see. So if you see a question or comment that you can no longer respond too, just copy and paste it into an email and send it to me at: [email protected] for now. This will at least get your inquires looked into until we know what is going on with YouTube and Google+. I receive calls all of the time from you viewers thanking me for putting some of the info out there I do in my videos and how much it has helped them. I just wanted to say thanks to you for looking at them and commenting. I appreciate everyone who watches and subscribes to me. I will keep on making as many as I can. Thank You Captain Drew Cavanaugh

http://storyblocks.com/Cinecom - From basic camera positions to better sound recording. Learn the basics of how to shoot an interview for beginners in this video tutorial. As a filmmaker you are used to control every aspect and detail of your project. From lighting to sound to actors, everything has to be perfect. In interviews this can be different, 9 out of 10 you're filming on location and this can lead to uncontrollable aspects like bad lighting or ugly bureaus. With some creativity and experience you can easily work around these aspects and come up with the best solution. But before you become a experienced interviewer, you have to start with the basics. In this tutorial we explain the fundamentals on how to shoot a good interview. But of course the most important thing to start with are the questions. Your shots can be perfect and your editing smooth, if the questions are bad so will be the interview. Try to avoid yes or no questions, but ask open-ended questions. These will create better interaction and give more interesting responses. Preparations about who and why your interviewing them are crucial to make the interview work. So don't go in unprepared. Another good preparation, is to scout your location. The more you know, the less surprises you encounter on your shoot day. This will give you an idea what gear you have to take with you, like lighting, props, tripods, crew... But will also give you inspiration for your shots, being creative with your location and framing you subject. Communicating with your subject/talent can be a great way to minimize surprises as well. You can maybe make a checklist for them so they know what to wear, expect and some contact information. ✅ FROM THE VIDEO Article ► https://www.cinecom.net/news/shoot-interview-5-tips-beginners/ ❤ 1,000,000 subscribers (no celebration) ► https://youtu.be/i2ymfS6Pzfg ✅ OUR EQUIPMENT My Custom GH5 Camera Rig ► https://www.cinecom.net/gear/custom-panasonic-gh5-camera-rig/ Cheap Green Key Equipment ► https://www.cinecom.net/gear/chroma-key-essentials/ All the Film Gear we use ► https://www.cinecom.net/gear ✅ LETS CONNECT! previous video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LurZriF32Jo Qual’ItScheduling Quichstart In my previous article, I introduced you to a neat active testing tool that I tried from Opal Systems called, “Qual’It”. You can find the previous article at https://thetechfirm.com/opale/Qual%20It%20Quickstart.pdf and the freemium version of their Qual’It solution (https://www.opalesystems.com/free-network-testing-solution). I received some feedback and questions and thought I would do a follow up video to address one of the questions. I was asked what feature I thought was cool and that I would use. The answer was simple, “Scheduling.” For those of you who are new to this topic, I’ll start from the beginning. As a general overview, active testing involves having a real client computer perform real commands, over your actual network to the production servers. If the product has scheduling and reporting then you can just review the results whenever you need them. As I mention in the accompanying video, the chances of catching a problem with one test is pretty slim, especially if the issue is random or intermittent. For this very reason I suggest you ensure your tools have a scheduling and threshold feature.

Well, that's not quite true. What is true is that the conflict is immensely complicated, and just about everyone in the world has an opinion about it. In this episode of Open Door, Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Avengers) and wife Susan Downey turned a converted windmill into a stylish and charming Hamptons home. In this funny, full-access house tour, the Downeys show off their favorite art, let you into their closets and explain why their cats have full run of the place. "We wanted something we haven’t seen a million times,” the Iron Man star says, describing the property itself as well as the decorative ministrations of AD100 designer Joe Nahem and the team at New York City–based Fox-Nahem Associates. The Downeys originally met Nahem two summers ago, when they rented the heavenly Amagansett country house the designer shares with his partner, Jeffrey Fields. The Downeys said goodbye to Nahem and Fields that summer with a request that the designers alert them to any particularly enticing properties coming onto the market in the Hamptons. Several months later, Nahem found a place that more than fit the bill: a late–19th century windmill folly, originally constructed as a playhouse, that had been transformed into a full-fledged residence by way of structural additions grafted onto the building in the decades following its construction. Among the many attributes of the estate were proximity to the town of East Hampton coupled with the privacy of a secluded location, enchanting gardens conjured by landscape designer Joseph Tyree for the home’s previous owners, and those sublime trees that dot the lawns like masterpieces of sculpture. Nahem didn’t have much time to revel in the triumph of his matchmaking. As soon as his clients acquired the property, they gave their designer a mere six weeks to transform the home into a Downey-rific sanctuary keyed to the couple’s adventurous aesthetic tastes and the comfort of their children, five-year-old son Exton and three-year-old daughter Avri. (The actor has another son, 24-year-old Indio, with his ex-wife, Deborah Falconer.) Happily, once the holiday season was over, Nahem and his team were able to return to the home and begin the renovation in earnest. One of the biggest changes was the reconfiguration of the living room that lies just beyond the octagonal entry foyer at the base of the windmill. To give the transitional area a greater sense of place, the designer sunk the living room several feet and anchored it with a massive wraparound fireplace wall by ceramic artist Peter Lane. Another major component of the renovation involved rethinking the pool area to suit the Downeys’ vision of easy, breezy outdoor leisure. Rather than making the guesthouse do double duty as a swimming cabana, as it had in the previous scheme, Nahem designed a freestanding poolside pavilion, in collaboration with Alveary Architecture, replete with a dining setup centered on a mosaic-topped table by Kelly Behun Studio, an outdoor living room and bar, and a television almost as large as the screens at the local multiplex. As for the interiors of the house itself, the mix represents an amiable consensus among the Downeys and their designer: pedigreed pieces and unpretentious off-the-rack staples, poppy colors and soothing neutrals, eccentric accents and discreet luxuries. It’s an idiosyncratic assemblage that speaks equally to the actor’s puckish spirit, his wife’s concerns for efficiency and ease, and Nahem’s finesse in crafting eminently livable homes with a touch of otherworldly magic. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Is our universe unique or one of many? What happened before the Big Bang? Why is there something rather than nothing? Physicists and cosmologists are closing in on how the universe operates at its very core. But even with powerful telescopes and particle accelerators pushed to their limits, experimenters struggle to keep up as theoreticians march forward, leaving grand theories untested. Some argue that if these deep questions can’t be answered empirically, they’re not relevant to science. Are they right? Join world-leading cosmologists, philosophers and physicists as they tackle the profound questions of existence. PARTICIPANTS: David Z. Albert, George F. R.
