The Windows 7 Firewall has a lot of features that are not available using the basic configuration tool. This video looks at how to configure the Windows Firewall using the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security tool. Check out http://YouTube.com/ITFreeTraining or http://itfreetraining.com for more of our always free training videos. This tool allows you to configure rules based on the IP address and port of the connection. It also allows you to configure an IPSec connection so that traffic between two points is automatically encrypted. Firewall demo 01:49 Windows Firewall with Advanced Security This admin tool allows you to configure the following items which are not possible in the basic tool. Port exemptions Rules based on an IP address Incoming rules Finer control over rules. You could enable only file sharing rather than file and printer sharing Settings and the rule can be imported and exported. Settings can be used other computers and group policy IPSec The Windows Firewall has IPSec integrated into the Firewall. This makes IPSec a lot easier to configure than ever before and also means that packets travelling over an IPSec connection will be checked by the Windows Firewall. IPSec Rule Types Isolation: This rule connections the computer up to another computer or device. This is based on a criteria the rule must meet. For example if the computer is a member of a domain. Authentication Exemption: This is a connection that does not require authentication. Usually the other party will be determined by looking at its IP address. This type of connection is not considered to be very security since IP addresses can be faked. Server to Server: Creates a connection to anther device or computer or to a subnet. Tunnel: This uses tunnel mode rather than transport mode in IPSec. Tunnel mode is usually used when connecting to gateways together. For example, if you had to VPN devices connecting to each other and they had clients behind them. Transport mode is usually used when one end point is a host. E.g. host to host, host to VPN device.

To learn how to SECURE your Remote Desktop Connections with 128-bit encryption so you can access a PC from outside your network safely and securely, check out my video on how to secure remote desktop: https://youtu.be/pKU03-sdNxk In this video I will show you how to very easily set up your computer and router to allow Remote Desktop connections from a remote location outside of your home or office. There are many times when I am at home and need to work on something on my systems at the office. With this setup I can use RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) and Remote Desktop Connection software to connect to my work computer from home (or from a hotel if I'm travelling). Or, I can log in to my PC at home from the office if need be. You cannot take over another desktop this way and allow another user to watch what you are doing. If you need that capability, then you need a paid third party service like LogMeIn. http://www.appdataworks.com

Learn to create secure tunnels using the SSH PuTTY client on windows. You can listen on a local port and redirect vulnerable traffic to the server via an SSH Tunnel. In this video we use PuTTY from a Windows 7 device to create an SSH tunnel to the CentOS 6.5 server to ensure we have a secure connection to the tigervnc service running on the CentOS Server. The VNC traffic would normally be unencrypted but the SSH Tunnel fixes this security hole. More videos like this online at http://www.theurbanpenguin.com

This video will look at Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop. Remote Assistance is designed to provide help to the user in the same way that they would get help from someone if the person were looking over their shoulder so to speak. Check out http://YouTube.com/ITFreeTraining or http://itfreetraining.com for more of our always free training videos. Remote Desktop is designed to allow a user to take complete control of their P.C. from remote. For example they could access their computer from home. Remote Assistance: 0:13 Remote Desktop: 05:58 Remote Assistance This allows anther user to connect up to your computer in order to provide assistance. This can be done through an invitation or via easy connect. An invitation is a file that can opened, e-mail through to the second party. Easy connect is a system that can directly contact the second user, it does however require IPv6. To configure remote assistance, open the control panel, system and security and under system select allow remote access. The system properties will then open. Ensure that allow remote assistance connections to this computer is ticked. In the advanced options you can configure if the remote user can take control of the desktop and also how long it will take for the remote assistance invitation to expire. In order for the remote user to control the desktop permission still need to be given from the local user. In order to start using remote assistance, run it from the start menu and generate an invitation or ask someone for help. If you generate an invitation you will be given a password. That password will need to be given to the other party in order for them to connect. Remote assistance no longer provides voice capable but does have text chat option. Remote Desktop Remote desktop allows you to take control of your computer from remote. It is different from remote assistance in that when you connect up to the computer the desktop of the computer is locked. Using Remote Desktop you could potential have two users using the same computer at the same time. For this reason this is why the desktop is locked when anther user connects. To use the Remote Desktop client, you can be running any version of Windows 7. You can also use operating systems like Windows Vista and Windows XP. The computer however that you are connecting up to must be running Windows 7 professional or above. To configure Remote Desktop, open the control panel, select system and security and then under system select allow remote access. On the remote tab of the system properties, the remote Desktop settings are at the bottom. If you are using an older client to connect to the computer like Windows XP, you need to select the option allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop. This does use a less secure protocol. At the bottom of the screen, you can press the select user's button to add additional users that will be able to access this computer, remember that Administrators by default will be able to use Remote Desktop. Once you run Remote Desktop you will have the option to the save the Remote Desktop settings to a file. This file at any time you can edit. Under the experience tab there are default profiles that are designed for different networks. For example Lan's and Wan's networks. These options will change the number of colors used and settings like the background being visible. If you experience slow or sluggish performance from Remote Desktop you should change some of these settings. Remote Desktop also supports clipboard transferring between the local and remote computer. If you want to transfers file between the remote and local computer, Remote Desktop can map your local driver so they appear in Windows Explorer in Remote Desktop. See http://YouTube.com/ITFreeTraining or http://itfreetraining.com for are always free training videos. This is only one video from the many free courses available on YouTube.

http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1018809 - This video discusses and demonstrates connecting to VMware virtual machines using the Windows Remote Desktop utility. As the Windows operating system installed inside of a VMware virtual machine behaves in the same way as it would if it were installed on a physical machine, you can connect to the Windows operating system remotely using the Windows RDP utility. To connect to your virtual machines via RDP, you need to ensure that your virtual machine is configured correctly and is accessible on your physical network. Your virtual machine must be connected to your physical network via either a Bridged or a NAT connection. For additional details, see VMware Knowledge Base article "Connecting to VMware virtual machines using the Windows Remote Desktop utility (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1018809)" For best viewing results, view in full screen mode with the 720 HD setting selected.

I’ll be using the Synology DS716+ II and the RT2600ac Router to demonstrate which you can find here on Amazon http://amzn.to/2xndcYS Sometimes you need to access your data on a Synology Setup so this tutorial will teach you how to connect to your Synology NAS with remote access. The DiskStation Management (DSM) software will help you do this one of three ways. Using QuickConnect, EZ-Internet or Manual Port Forwarding. Synology Remote Access is setup the easy way by using QuickConnect. This is a really simple Wizard that will guide you through getting everything on your Synololgy NAS setup. Synology Internet Access setup via EZ-Internet is the second method for remote access with a Synology NAS. This method is once again a wizard but does require a compatible router. Synology port forwarding is the last method of this tutorial showing you how to manually setup port forwarding with a router. This does vary between manufacturers so if you are looking for the highest compatibility, then I highly recommend the Synology RT2600ac Router. http://amzn.to/2whPZlS Full Disclosure: The DS716+ II and the RT2600ac units were provided by Synology in order to create this tutorial. No money has changed hands however. If I have to learn ... why not teach you too series. One of the great things with windows 8 is its ability to run multiple operating systems on your same computer at the same time. Hyper-v is a free application on windows 8 pro and windows 8 enterprise. This shows how to get remote desktop running to connect from Windows 8 to Windows 7 w audio & ethernet w hyper-v virual machine. Your basically running two operating systems at the same time on your pc but it seems like your running Windows 7 instead of Windows 8

On September 25th QA was a senior sponsor at the Windows Server 2012 launch as part of that event Microsoft asked me to produce some videos. The video used on the big stage was a whirlwind tour of the new Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) provisioning engine within Windows Server 2012. By popular demand you can now view the video on my YouTube channel but I thought I should put some context around the video. With Windows Server 2008 Microsoft introduced the concept of Roles and Features. With Windows Server 2008R2 Remote Desktop Services (RDS) got a lot more complex with the introduction of VDI support. This leads us to Windows Server 2012 where Microsoft have added a number of features: 1. Server Manager supports scenario deployment configurations for RDS solutions 2. Auto provisioning of Pooled and Personal virtual machines from a gold VHD VM 3. Remote app publication from VM's 4. User Profile disk 5. Rolling updates of Pooled VM's when the based disk needs to be replaced because of being updated 6. Ability to increase VMs deployed easily The video demonstrates the deployment and provisioning features. I will address the remote app, user profile disk, updating and scale in another blog & video later. With Server Manager instead of just deploying individual roles in Windows Server 2012 the whole RDS solution can be deployed for a single wizard across a number of servers. When the wizard is launched the wizard allows selection of the computers that will perform all the different functions within and RDS deployment and for VDI this would possibly include: • RDS Virtualization Hosts • RDS Connection Broker • RDS Session Host • RDS Licensing • RDS Web Access • RDS Gateway The RDS Gateway & RDS Web Access are optional components. Having selected the host(s) that will run each piece the scenario wizard will deploy all the required features onto each of the targeted hosts. Once the deployment has been completed a collection of VM's can be created within the RDS section of server manager. The main requirement here before you start is to have a prepared gold image VM. This will need a VM to exist on a Hyper-V host which has all the configuration settings set as required, removed from your active directory domain and be sysprepped. This VM can be either Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8. When the deployment wizard has been completed this gold VM will be exported, duplicated, copied as a base file to each Hyper-V hosts (if there is not any shared storage) and then differencing disks will be built referencing the copied base file.
