36 SMART IDEAS TO REUSE OLD THINGS

14:04
Amazing repurposing hacks We all have old things laying around in our house but we struggle to get rid of them. Sometimes these things have very sentimental value for us so instead of clearing out our spaces we choose to hoard them instead. So, in this video, we found the perfect solution for you. We show you cool ways to repurpose your old items into completely new ones and find new better uses for them. If you have an old grocery canvas bag laying around that you have no particular use for it, we show you a cool way to sew it and adjust it in order to turn it into a beautiful makeup display bag. Simply cut it from the sides just as we demonstrate in the video and then sew it in as many compartments as you like. Keep the handles as they are so that you'll be able to hang it and then sew some ribbons around the compartments you just created to make it more aesthetically pleasing. If you love art and design and you are looking for amazing ways to decorate your bullet journal using beautiful watercolor effects follow our little art trick. Take a reusable bag and using a few colored markers draw on it just as we demonstrate in the video. Then spray some water on it and then stick it upside down on a piece of watercolor paper. Press it down in order to distribute the marker paint everywhere and then remove. After it is completely dry take your brush pen and write your little message or quote that you'd like to keep in your bullet journal. If you have an old pair of jeans that you'd like to turn into an amazing masterpiece, we show you the perfect way to do it. Take your jeans and cut the back pockets off. Then take two squared pieces of lace and place them at the place where the pockets you just cut were, sew them in place and voila. This way you can re-use old jeans and turn them into new fashionable items. If you love wearing those fluffy sleeper socks at home but they are too slippery, we show you a cool way to improve them by making them anti-slippery. Take some hot glue wiggle some at the bottom of the socks, then let them dry and voila. This way you won't have to worry that you might slip on the floor while wearing them. Watch our whole video to find many different ways to re-use old items that you will absolutely love since you'll be able to create brand new useful items out of old ones. How To Make Paper

10:55
What up guys! So today I'm going to show you how to make some paper. First a lil Thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring this video.. What ever your making.. Make your next move with Squarespace. Get 10% off your first purchase:) http://squarespace.com/shmoxd So what you're going to need is a mold and deckle, a blender, a bin to hold water, a rolling pin, a lil plastic sheet, some paper to recycle, and something to soak up water.. like paper towel (or sponge or shammy). To make the mold and deckle I used two picture frames, two wooden dowels, a drill, a staple gun, and a screen. (I'm the worst tenant in the world and just used a screen from one of my windows) Remove the prints from the picture frames. I actually made the print on recycle paper. So thats cool I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Take out the metal clips that hold in the picture. If you do the next part where I drill holes to put the dowels in as little guides, you'll want to make sure the frames a wooden. The dowels should fit snug in the deckle.. then make the holes a little wider in the mold so its not a tight fit. After that cut out your screen to fit and staple on each side making sure the screen is fairly tight. Cut off the excess screen. To make the pulp.. take the recyclable paper, tear it up, and put it in a blender with water. I got the blender from a thrift store.. cause I didn't want to ruin a nice blender. Blend it up till its to a consistency where there aren't big chucks of solid paper... If you want the paper all white you can filter out some of the stuff with just water and your mold. You can also wash the pulp with dish soap or laundry detergent. If you want to bleach paper you can also do that.. just be sure to rinse out all the bleach. The mold makes for a good strainer. Once you have your pulp add it to a tub of water. The water need to be about 2x as deep as the mold and deckle is tall. That way, you can move the mold and deckle around freely and the pulp mixture will go on top. Pull up the mold and deckle and the water will strain out giving you a nice even layer of pulp. [ Oh! You can also add shorting to the pulp water mixture for some sizing.. this will help the paper be nice and strong.. ] take off the deckle and put a screen on top. That way when you dry the pulp.. it won't stick to the paper towel ( or what ever you are using to dry) You'll see a little later in the video I figure out a better way to get the paper off the mold. You just hold the mold up side down with the screen on the bottom and blow off the paper. Then put the plastic sheet on the paper side, remove the screen and add a paper towel and use a pin roller to get more water out and also that will shmoosh the paper agains the plastic sheet giving it a smooth side on one side. I then went a little nuttso.. and tried adding a bunch of stuff to the pulp water mix.. like: Pressed flowers, felt, string, different colored pieces of paper, paint, copper flakes, sprinkles, pine needles, Christmas ornaments, candy, drugs, glitter, fish food, a taco, an iPhone, and oil.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ soooo you guys could try to put what ever you want in the paper mix.. my favorites were honestly the strings and felt. SOooooo another thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring the video. If you guys want a website, url, online store or portfolio.. I like square space and you guys can use this link to get %10 off your first purchase: http://squarespace.com/shmoxd You could also start a free trial today ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also I'm thinking about starting a Patreon.. if you guys have any ideas or things you would like for the rewards just lmk:) Equipment: I got most of the stuff from thrift stores and things just laying around my house this go around.. Plastic Bin ( my roommates drawers ) Blender Rolling pin plastic sheets ( I actually just used page protectors ) paper towels sponge or shammy (starch for sizing) Mold and Deckle: Screen (from one of my windows) 2 picture frames wooden dowels drill staple gun screen. Recycling of paper in India

02:02
The process of recycling of paper at Paswara Papers Ltd., Mohiuddinpur, Meerut, India. See how paper is made! PASWARA PAPERS LTD. is a "PASWARA GROUP" company based in India and engaged in manufacturing of Kraft Paper & Paper Board since 1984 having two separate manufacturing lines and presently producing over 100 MT Paper & Board per day to cater to the specialty Paper Market in India. The Raw Material for producing Kraft Paper & Paper Board is Waste Paper which is collected from Box manufacturing company, Printing Press, Packaging Industries and also collected from Road Sides. Thus, the Raw Material, Waste Paper mainly procured from India and company also imports Waste Papers from USA, UAE, Netherlands, Canada, Saudi Arabia in 40 Feet Size Containers through Sea Route. After the Raw Material reaches at Ports, it is transported through Road Vehicles upto factory. Paper Re-cycling is the process of recovering Waste Paper & re-making it into new Paper Products. There are three categories of Paper that can be used as Feed Stocks for making Re-cycled paper, Mill Broke, Pre-consumer Waste, and Post consumer Waste. Mill Broke is paper trimmings and other paper scrap from the manufacture of Paper and is recycled internally in a paper mill. Pre-consumer waste is the material which has left the paper mill i.e. in other words it has been discarded before it was ready for consumer use. Post consumer waste is the material which is discarded after consumer use such as old magazine, old newspaper, office waste, old telephone directories, residential mixed paper & used corrugated boxes etc. All these paper scrap / waste paper are suitable for recycling i.e. for producing new paper for Primary use. In general the following steps are involved in Kraft Paper Making Process : Raw Material Preparation, Washing, Screening & Cleaning, Refining of Pulp, Blending & Stock Preparation, Paper Making, Finishing & Packing. Ecology PCB 3066: The Effect of Recycling on Biodiversity

02:13
The effect of recycling on biodiversity SCRIPT: Hello, I'm Janet and my topic is the effect of recycling on biodiversity. I believed that my research would show that the more you recycle, the greater the biodiversity because of fewer animals dying due to pollution, waste, and less plants and producers being used to make material things for humans if we recycled. My research and the journal articles I read showed me mixed reviews. In many places across the world like the UK and the United States showed that if the materials in landfills were recycled and the land restored by using bacteria to break down pollution, restore the land, and if they replanted native species, they could increase the biodiversity of certain species like birds in the UK that were on the endangered list, showing that recycling can indeed increase biodiversity. Also, another experiment done showed that recycling the material through compost and using it to fertilize the ground can also increase biodiversity in the grasslands where many species traveled to after many plants grew with the recycled compost and helped increase the biodiversity in the area. Not only did recycling have a major effect on the biodiversity on land, it also had a huge impact on biodiversity in the ocean. Recycling materials leading to the decrease of pollutants of the air, water and land led to less ocean acidification which could lead to the deaths of many animals that could not live in the toxicity. Recycling led to greater levels of biodiversity in the oceans. Many articles supported my belief that recycling would increase biodiversity except for one experiment I read about where the lack of recycling led to greater biodiversity as certain animals took advantage of the plastic in the oceans to have an entirely new food source that their stomachs could digest, separating these albatrosses from other albatrosses. From my research and the research of scientists, recycling does have an effect on biodiversity, but it can be a positive or negative correlation depending on the situation. A New Continent Is Discovered on Earth In the Pacific Ocean

10:32
How to Stop Water Polution. In case you're wondering what water polution has to do with a new continent discoevered in the Pacific Ocean, here's the answer to this mystery. This new continent is an island that consists solely of garbage and plastic waste. Some countries are ready to announce an ecological disaster. Let’s see if there’s something we can all do to save the planet. TIMESTAMPS The popularity of plastic 0:26 Garbage islands 1:47 The Great Pacific Garbage Patch 2:30 Problems connected with the plastic pollution of the ocean 4:39 Bali ecological disaster 7:31 Several ways to solve problem 8:26 #newcontinent #garbageisland #ecologicalproblem Music: Butchers - Silent Partner https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -2 million plastic bags a minute are thrown away. As for bubble wrap, the amount produced in just one year would be enough to cover our planet around the equator. 500 billion plastic cups are used and disposed of annually. -There are 3 huge garbage islands in the world: in the central North Pacific Ocean, in the Indian Ocean, and in the Atlantic Ocean. -The size of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is currently more than 600,000 square miles. According to the journal Scientific Reports, there are more than 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic that have accumulated in this area. -Plastic objects in the ocean kill animals or get stuck in their bodies. Some types of plastic are toxic. In addition, plastic has the ability to absorb such poisonous substances as mercury. Birds often choke to death after trying to swallow a bright object that has caught their eye. -Indonesian authorities have recently declared a “garbage emergency.” More than 100 tons of waste brought ashore every day to beaches from Seminyak and Jimbaran to Kuta. -To solve the problem, people can find a way to remove the garbage that is already in the ocean. Another way out is to decrease pollution or stop it completely. Debating A Hoaxed Journal Editor

09:26
Seven academic journals recently published papers that were actually hoaxes designed to show the absurdity of academic fields like gender studies, race studies, queer studies, etc. --------- Subscribe to my YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/johnstossel Like me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JohnStossel/ Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/johnstossel --------- The hoaxers intentionally submitted papers that were ridiculous; one included gibberish about rape culture in dog parks. Another was a section of Hitler’s Mein Kampf re-written with feminist buzzwords. John Stossel covered the hoax here: https://youtu.be/As8h2ZCfIPs Six journal editors would not talk to Stossel, but one -- Roberto Refinetti, editor in chief of "Sexuality and Culture" -- agreed to an interview. He condemns what the hoaxers did: "You’re deceiving people without much of a reason." He complains, "If you're going to do your research with people, you have to propose your research, submit to a body called an Institutional Review Board." One of the hoaxers, Peter Boghossian, was found guilty by his employer (Portland State University) of violating their rules requiring him to get approval for the hoax. Of course, since the Institutional Review Board would have insisted that the researchers inform the journals that they were being tested, the test wouldn’t have worked. Stossel says he thinks the hoaxers had good reason not to go to the review board first. "Their hoax woke us up to the fact that some academic journals publish nonsense," he says. Refinetti's journal, for instance, published the hoax paper titled, "Going in Through the Back Door: Challenging Straight Male Homohysteria, Transhysteria, and Transphobia Through Receptive Penetrative Sex Toy Use." The paper touted "encouraging male anal eroticism with sex toys" because it would help make men more feminist. "Sexuality and Culture" published that paper after its reviewers praised it glowingly. One called it, “an incredibly rich and exciting contribution… timely, and worthy of publication.” Refinetti defends his journal, saying that it publishes mind-expanding questions. "What is the problem with [the subject of the paper]? I don't see a problem... It's nothing really absurd or unusual," Refinetti says. He also says: "Let's question our assumptions, because maybe we're making assumptions that we shouldn't be making... When homosexuality was considered a mental illness. People pushed, the psychiatrists got together, and said... 'it's a perfectly fine thing to choose and not to call it mental illness.' So that's the type of thing that a journal in sexuality and culture does, is discuss." Discussion is good, Stossel agrees. But in journals today, it seems that only certain conclusions are permitted. The hoaxers complain that in many university fields: "A culture has developed in which only certain conclusions are allowed, like those that make whiteness and masculinity problematic." "I wouldn't be surprised to find out that in some places that is correct," Refinetti agrees. "Is that a problem?” asks Stossel. Refinetti replies: "How big of a problem is it? Is it worse than hunger? Is it worse than people shooting each other?" But a lack of diversity of ideas does make it harder to find truth -- and more likely for ridiculous ideas to thrive. Today’s colleges have an extreme lack of diversity -- A National Association of Scholars report found that professors at top liberal arts colleges are ten times more likely to be Democrats than Republicans. Refinetti says that’s not surprising. "I think it's very reasonable -- because what is the job of learning?... being more open to new ideas, which is what being a liberal is," he says. Stossel pushes back: “This is your left leaning definition; it's conservatives that proposed changes like school vouchers... privatizing air traffic control." “That's an interesting point," Refinetti responds. "Then the hypothesis is shut down. See, that's how things work. You show the idea, you discuss the idea, and get it." Refinetti says his journal publishes multiple viewpoints. It has published articles that question feminist orthodoxy. Stossel says he's grateful that Refinetti was willing to have a conversation -- but he still cheers the hoaxers for revealing that much of what passes for scholarship at colleges is bunk.

Waste, Packaged Food & Health:

Alex Jensen speaks of the Political Economy of Zero Waste by calling for a ban on packaged food and promotion of Localisaton of Food . Waste is fuelled by the use of plastics and the subsidies it receives in different forms. The legitimising of plastics through mantras of recycling is also affects one section of people at the cost of another.. Developing In Vitro Screening of Chemical Contaminants in CA's Recycled Water Monitoring for CECs in Aquatic Ecosystems February 14, 2013 Part 2 of 2 Developing in vitro bioassays for screening of chemical contaminants in California's recycled water by Daniel Schlenk http://www.mywaterquality.ca.gov/monitoring_council/collaboration_network/docs/cwqmcn_02_2013_b.pdf This webinar on Monitoring for Constituents of Emerging Concern (CECs) in Aquatic Ecosystems will cover the CEC prioritization framework and recommendations. A short update on the development of bioanalytical screening methods will also be given. In accordance with the provisions of the Recycled Water Policy, a CEC Advisory Panel has been established to address questions about regulating CECs with respect to the use of recycled water. The Panel's primary charge is to provide guidance for developing monitoring programs that assess potential CEC threats from various water recycling practices, including groundwater recharge/reuse and urban landscape irrigation. On June 25, 2010, the CEC Advisory Panel provided recommendations to the State Water Board and California Department of Public Health in their Final Report. www.waterboards.ca.gov/water_issues/programs/water_recycling_policy/docs/cec_monitoring_rpt.pdf Many of the questions to be addressed by the Advisory Panel on CECs in recycled water are also relevant to the ambient environment. The David and Lucile Packard Foundation has partnered with SCCWRP to support a second panel that will provide the State with recommendations on how to best limit the impact of CECs on our oceans, estuaries and wetlands. Information on the Science Advisory Panel for CECs in California's Coastal and Marine Ecosystems is also available on the SCCWRP Website. www.sccwrp.org/ResearchAreas/Contaminants/ContaminantsOfEmergingConcern/EcosystemsAdvisoryPanel.aspx Daniel Schlenk, Ph.D. Dr. Daniel Schlenk is Professor of Aquatic Ecotoxicology and Environmental Toxicology at the University of California Riverside. Dr. Schlenk received his Ph.D. in Toxicology from Oregon State University in 1989. He was supported by a National Institute of Environmental Health Science postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University from 1989-1991. He currently serves as Chair of the USEPA FIFRA Science Advisory Panel and has been a member of the Board of Directors for the North American Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. In addition, he has been a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Biochemistry, Chinese University of Hong Kong; a recipient of the Ray Lankester Investigatorship of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom; a Visiting Scholar of the Instituto Del Mare, Venice, Italy; and a Visiting Scientist at the CSIRO Lucas Heights Laboratory in Sydney, Australia. He serves on the editorial boards of Toxicological Sciences, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, The Asian Journal of Ecotoxicology and Marine Environmental Research. He has co-edited a 2 volume series entitled "Target Organ Toxicity in Marine and Freshwater Teleosts" and has published more than 165 peer reviewed journal articles. His research interests revolve around the fate and effects of pesticides in aquatic organisms. In particular, his laboratory has focused on the impacts of hypersaline water on the biotransformation and enantioselective toxicity of endocrine-modulating pesticides to aquatic organisms. http://envisci.ucr.edu/faculty/schlenk.html The Water Quality Monitoring Collaboration Network (WQMCN) is a working group of the California Water Quality Monitoring Council. This working group hosts voluntary monthly Webinar that allows members of the monitoring community to network and exchange information and ideas on topic of interest. The Webinar format, content, and topics of interest vary in response to input from participants. Sessions are planned to share technical and support tools for monitoring, assessment and reporting; to encourage discussion on common concerns like information management and program development; and to provide a forum for networking and collaboration.

Journal with Me | ASMR Journaling Ep. 4 | 5k Giveaway (CLOSED)

29:24
Welcome back Odd Flock! Thanks for visiting my fourth Journal with Me episode in this series - featuring ASMR Journaling. I decided to make this little journal because I've gotten requests for longer videos in this style. Making a little journal was a way for me to fill up more time in the video vs just a normal page spread. This video isn't really meant to teach you anything as we probably all know how to do this. But there is one important lesson here... It's a recurring accident that I kept encountering in this video. 🤣🤣🙄🙄 This is just one of several ways that I construct my book covers. (GIVEAWAY ENTRIES ARE NOW CLOSED) 🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉 Oh hey it's also a giveaway video! Thank you all so much for 5k ➕ subscribers! I'm truly humbled and thankful for you all! I'd like to giveaway a $25 gift card that you may use in any Etsy shop that accepts gift cards. I don't have a chance to make anything currently so rather than a big box gift card - let's keep supporting the makers! The way you enter this giveaway will be as follows: - What type mishap did you notice in this video more than once? (hint: it's my own fault 😂) - comment a time when a mishap like this has happened to you (or of it hasn't) - LIKE this video 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 - be SUBSCRIBED - must be over 18 years of age - entries CLOSE 3/30/19 11:59pm PST - prize will be electronic so must have a VALID, WORKING email to receive prize - Winner will be selected on 3/31/19 - open internationally 🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊 If you aren't sure what is happening in this video, you can see my full explanation here: https://youtu.be/AuduejQ-6lA I hope you find the process of this calming and soothing - especially if you craft along with me. If you are watching to calm down or get sleepy - I hope you find it helpful. I tried to be very conscious of loud or "sharp" noises as well as my breathing. I personally find the background noise from outside adds to the calmness of this particular type white noise - but let me know what you all think and we can make some modifications for the betterment of future videos. ASMR is a treatment that I utilize when I'm feeling anxiety starting to creep up on me. I also use it to help me fall asleep at night because I love the sounds of certain things and paper is one of them. Like this video? Here's a Playlist I've created where these types of videos that I make will be stored: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLki4mpbNUGgEAsd6z2w7aflLcEdi4b6M Here's a bit more information on ASMR: https://sleep.org/articles/what-is-asmr/ Thank you for joining me for the fourth installment of this ASMR Journal with Me series....I hope you enjoy and just....calm down ❤️ If you made your version of this project please feel free to tag me on Instagram with #pinkoddbird Find me on the nets: Instagram: pinkoddbird Facebook: Facebook.com/pinkoddbird Etsy: https://etsy.me/2BMHG9V Thanks for swinging by! Breaking News - The plastic that can be recycled INDEFINITELY without degrading

04:13
A new kind of plastic has been developed that can be recycled indefinitely.Ordinary plastic cannot be recycled repeatedly, because it degrades when it is recycled over time.Plastics are mechanically ground up and made into lower quality plastics. For instance a clear plastic bottle, when reprocessed, has to be used as a lower grade of plastic, such as a carpet or a fleece. And while biodegradable plastics have been developed, once they decompose, the chemical building blocks that make them up cannot be reused to make plastic.Worldwide the production of plastic has increased to the point where output is expected to exceed 500 million metric tons by 2050.As most plastics are produced for single-use applications, these materials will persist in the environment for centuries. So researchers from Colorado State University said it was a pressing need to develop a plastic that can be reused. They have developed a chemical recycling method, which breaks the plastic down into its ‘building blocks’ that can then be purified and turned back into plastic.Dr Jian-Bo Zhu and colleagues took an existing plastic and improved it.They identified two catalysts that can break down this polymer into constituent monomers with great efficiency - at about 85 per cent - at which point the monomers can be reused.Commenting on the research, Andrew Dove of the University of Birmingham said: ‘Studies such as that of Zhu et al., in which disposed plastics can be infinitely recycled without deleterious effects on their properties, can lead to a world in which plastics at the end of their life are not considered as waste but as raw materials to generate high-value products and virgin plastics.’The full findings of the study were published in the journal Science. This is not the first time in recent days that a solution to the problem of recycling plastic has been proposed.Last week, British researchers announced they had inadvertently created a plastic-digesting enzyme while conducting X-ray experiments on natural bacteria found in a Japanese recycling centre, causing it to mutate into a more powerful enzyme.Tests showed that the lab-made mutant had a supercharged ability to break down polyethylene terephthalate (PET), one of the most popular forms of plastic employed by the food and drinks industry, and convert it into its original chemicals. This could help reduce waste output and also tackle the use of crude oil in plastic manufacture. AUTOPHAGY FASTING EFFECTS On RESISTANCE Vs CARDIO EXERCISE!

05:35
AUTOPHAGY FASTING EFFECTS On RESISTANCE Vs CARDIO EXERCISE! Autophagy is primarily induced through starvation, which is why many people opt for fasting to help improve this process in their body. Fasting helps to increase autophagy, which means the body is more capable of recycling waste materials that may be found within cells. Even though fasting is considered a great way to induce this particular process, scientists are hard at work to see how additional measures can be taken to benefit autophagy further and make the process even more effective. Exercise is one particular area that has gained a lot of attention recently. Scientists have discovered that certain types of exercises can help to induce autophagy faster, especially when combined with fasting. It is, however, important to consider the potential differences between various types of exercises, and how they affect the autophagy process in particular. In one study, scientists used mutant mice in order to generate the particular benefits that exercise would have on autophagy. During the study, the researchers provided evidence that exercise is, indeed, a beneficial method for inducing...... A study published in the Journal of Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity studied the important connection between aerobic exercise and autophagy. The researchers behind the study explain that autophagy seems to play a crucial role in providing an improvement in the utilization and transportation of oxygen throughout the body, especially during aerobic exercises at a higher altitude. The study further summarizes the potential effects of inducing autophagy through....... A study that was led by scientists at the Institute of Neuroscience in Belgium also found that cardio exercises seem to be effective in.... In another study, ultra-endurance training was used to induce autophagy and was shown to also.... At the same time, it needs to be noted that excessive exercise along with a fasted state could become disadvantageous. Catabolism and muscle atrophy can occur in the exercise that is too excessive. Instead of.... Resistance training, such as weight lifting and other strength training exercise protocols, also affects autophagy. 01:14:54
Google Tech Talk (more info below) December 1, 2011 Presented by Raja (Puragra) GuhaThakurta. ABSTRACT The lecture "Our Place in the Cosmos" explains how we (and, for that matter, all complex life forms) are connected to the Universe around us. This connection relies on the fact that our Milky Way and other galaxies like it play host to cosmic recycling processes that involve the formation of stars and their planetary systems inside nebulae (dense gas/dust clouds), nuclear fusion reactions that occur within stars, and the death of massive stars in explosions known as supernovae. As a result of these processes the Earth contains elements like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, all of which are essential ingredients of protein molecules that are basic building blocks of life on Earth. To understand our origin we must therefore understand how galaxies form as part of the so-called cosmic web and evolve via galaxy cannibalism: merging and destruction of small satellite galaxies whereby their stars are incorporated into larger galaxies. This portion of the story will take us back to the earliest imaginable times in the history of the Universe. The talk will be illustrated with the latest astronomical images obtained using space-/ground-based telescopes and state-of-the-art computer simulations. Speaker Info: Raja (Puragra) GuhaThakurta received a bachelor's degree in Physics at Saint Xavier's College in Kolkata, India and a Ph.D. in Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University in 1989. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ and at Princeton University. He worked briefly at NASA's Space Telescope Science Institute in Balitmore, MD (operational headquarters of the Hubble Space Telescope), before joining the faculty of the University of California Santa Cruz in 1994 where he is currently a professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics. The primary focus of GuhaThakurta's research is the formation and evolution of galaxies, including the Andromeda galaxy. He has authored/coauthored ~350 journal articles and meeting abstracts, and has given dozens of lectures, both non-technical and technical. He received an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship in 1997 and the Herzberg Memorial Prize and Fellowship in 2001. This talk was hosted by Jeff Dean and Boris Debic.
