The risk register provides the list of identified risks to be evaluated, and the risk management plan provides the details on how probability and impact will be assessed and what risk scoring formula and ranking criteria will be used. Risks are prioritized and ranked based on their overall risk rating score, but risks can also be prioritized by their expected monetary value, impact, or any combination of other methods. 11.3.1 Perform Qualitative Risk Analysis: Inputs • Risk register The risk register is a comprehensive list of all threats and opportunities the project faces. It also contains supplementary data about each risk, including its impact, probability, risk response, budget, risk owner, and contingency and fallback plans. • Risk management plan The risk management plan is a component of the project management plan. It details and defines the risk management activities for the project. The plan establishes the risk methodology, risk roles and responsibilities, risk categories, probability and impact scales, risk tolerances, frequencies of risk management activities and reporting, and the budget and schedule for risk management activities. • Project scope statement The project scope statement details the measurable goals, objectives, deliverables, and requirements of the project, and what the acceptance criteria of deliverables will be. It also describes the work required to meet all objectives and deliverables of the project, and it also contains milestones, assumptions, risks, and costs. The scope statement helps determine the impact a risk may have on the project’s objectives and may help determine its probability. • Organizational process assets Data from similar, past projects and risk databases will help determine impacts and probabilities. 11.3.2 Perform Qualitative Risk Analysis: Tools and Techniques • Risk probability and impact assessment This assessment investigates each identified risks to expose the probability and impact of all the project objectives. The video show basic concepts behind Monte Carlo project schedule risk analysis. Based on example of very simple project schedule this video demonstrates Monte Carlo sampling process. The video also shows basics steps of Monte Carlo simulation for the precedence network. The results of a Monte Carlo schedule risk analysis can be thought of as a risk adjusted project schedule. Risk adjusted project schedules can be created using mean duration, start and finish time, or a particular percentile of statistical distributions for start, finish time, and duration. It is very convenient to show a risk adjusted project schedule alongside the original deterministic (no uncertainties) project schedule. Both schedules can be shown on a single Gantt chart. Monte Carlo offers a universal method to analyze your schedule. It does not matter what combination of tasks you have and what distributions they have, Monte Carlo will be able to calculate an accurate, if probabilistic, answer. In this video we will demonstrate a step by step process of the project risk management and analysis workflow in RiskyProject. To process starts with a Project schedule. Project schedules can include activities, costs and resources. Project schedules can be created in RiskyProject or imported from other project scheduling software such as Microsoft Project or Oracle Primavera. In RiskyProject risks can be managed either at the project or project portfolio level. Each project has a risk register. If you are managing more than one project, they can be part of an Enterprise risk register. The project risk registers include all information about risks that could affect the project. Once risks have been identified and added to the risk registers, they can be assigned to a project’s tasks or resources. As part of this process, we can also create risk mitigation and response plans. These plans are stored in a common corporate repository. Once created, risk plans can be assigned to risks and become part of the risk management process. Once you have assigned risk to your project schedule, you run a Monte Carlo simulation to analyze the impacts of the risks. The alternative method for Monte Carlo risk analysis (as opposed to applying uncertainties) is to assign risks from your risk register to your project schedule and costs. RiskyProject has an integrated risk register that allows you to assign risk outcomes - probabilities and impacts - to your project, which we refer to as Event Chain methodology. This is the preferred method of quantitatively assessing risk in projects especially in circumstances where you have limited analogous historical data that can be used for risk estimates. The reason for this is that people generally have very limited ability to estimate at the boundaries or limits of the uncertainties. Whereas, we vcan be quite accurate at estimating what the most likely duration will be, we do much more poorly when attempting to estimate worst case and best values. The result is that we end up with unrealistic and generally too optimistic estimates for our projects. Using risks to model project uncertainty will generally lead to better forecasts as people are much better at understanding how a risk will impact a project if it occurs.
