GraphLab: A Distributed Abstraction for Machine Learning in the Cloud. by Carlos Guestrin 20130128
Speaker: Carlos Guestrin Event Details: http://www.sfbayacm.org/event/graphlab-distributed-abstraction-machine-learning-cloud Today, machine learning (ML) methods play a central role in industry and science. The growth of the Web and improvements in sensor data collection technology have been rapidly increasing the magnitude and complexity of the ML tasks we must solve. This growth is driving the need for scalable, parallel ML algorithms that can handle "BigData." Unfortunately, designing and implementing efficient parallel ML algorithms is challenging. Existing high-level parallel abstractions such as MapReduce and Pregel are insufficiently expressive to achieve the desired performance, while low-level tools such as MPI are difficult to use, leaving ML experts repeatedly solving the same design challenges. This talk describes the GraphLab framework, which naturally expresses asynchronous, dynamic graph computations that are key for state-of-the-art ML algorithms. When these algorithms are expressed in our higher-level abstraction, GraphLab will effectively address many of the underlying parallelism challenges, including data distribution, optimized communication, and guaranteeing sequential consistency, a property that is surprisingly important for many ML algorithms. On a variety of large-scale tasks, GraphLab provides 20-100x performance improvements over Hadoop. In recent months, GraphLab has received thousands of downloads, and is being actively used by a number of startups, companies, research labs and universities. This talk represents joint work with Yucheng Low, Joey Gonzalez, Aapo Kyrola, Jay Gu, and Danny Bickson. Speaker Bio Carlos Guestrin is the Amazon Professor of Machine Learning at the Computer Science & Engineering Department of the University of Washington. His previous positions include Associate Professor at Carnegie Mellon University and senior researcher at the Intel Research Lab in Berkeley. He is also the co-founder of Flashgroup, a start up focused on addressing information and social overload on the web. Carlos received his PhD and Masters from Stanford University, and a Mechatronics Engineer degree from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Carlos' work has been recognized by awards at a number of conferences and two journals: KDD 2007 and 2010, IPSN 2005 and 2006, VLDB 2004, NIPS 2003 and 2007, UAI 2005, ICML 2005, AISTATS 2010, JAIR in 2007 & 2012, and JWRPM in 2009. He is also a recipient of the ONR Young Investigator Award, NSF Career Award, Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, IBM Faculty Fellowship, the Siebel Scholarship and the Stanford Centennial Teaching Assistant Award. Carlos was named one of the 2008 `Brilliant 10' by Popular Science Magazine, received the IJCAI Computers and Thought Award and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). He is a former member of the Information Sciences and Technology (ISAT) advisory group for DARPA.

QTP - Quick trick if QTP/UFT is not recognizing objects in your application.
http://www.joecolantonio.com/2013/09/26/qtp-uft-object-recognition-issues-with-net/ If you are like me the first thing I do when testing a new object with QTP is use the SPY to check out the files that I need to automate. If the QTP Spy has object recognition issues I rarely try to record against it. But in this case doing a quick throw away recording first actually helps.

Submersible Pump installation
Submersible pump installation and repair. Do-it-yourself for a shallow (less than 75ft) well. Need some moderate upper body strength. A helper is nice to pull the pipe across the lawn as you pull it up. I just stopped twice and straightened it out. Obviously couldn't video an pull pipe. (and not twist ties but zip ties) Special thanks to Robert English (who used to put in wells) for info and encouragement. So this is pretty obvious! To put it back you leave the galvanized pipe attached! You feed the pipe back down the well, being careful not to twist the rope up. Make sure you know approximately where the hole the pitless fits into is located on the side of the pipe. The spring on the pitless will help push it against the side. MAke sure the stainless cable and the rope are within grabbing distance as you lower the metal pipe into the well. Put the metal pipe into the well up to the black tape mark. Then move it around until you feel the pitless go into the fitting in the side. Move the galvanized metal pipe around to make sure the pitless is secure. Fasten the rope to your pipe wrench or large screwdriver...just in case, and lay it over the 4" pipe hole. Carefully unscrew the pipe from the pitless, hook up the electrcity, wrap wires with tape, pour 1/2 bleach down the well, and seal it! Turn on the breaker! DONE!

Excel: How to Best Import External Data into Excel & Import data from the Web to Excel
Get the full course: https://courses.xelplus.com Excel has various tools that can help you easily clean up your raw data for further analysis. Apart from using formulas and formatting, there are two useful Excel features that let you easily clean up. One method is text to columns feature and the other to import external data. The Get External Data tool can be used to import and analyse data from other systems. This tool is also useful for importing data to run your dashboards or do further analysis using pivot tables, etc. Usually you can get data extracts from any system (e.g. “.dat” or “.csv” from Oracle, “.xml” files from SAP, etc.). These can be imported into Excel. Importing External Data also gives you control over the decimals and thousand separator, especially if you’re dealing with international companies. In the US, the decimal is dot and the comma is a thousand separator and in most European countries it’s the other way round, where the comma is a decimal and the dot a thousand separator. It’s always safest to Import it properly with the Excel Data Import wizard! After importing press Ctrl + T to create a table out of it. You can create a pivot table off this one, and when you do, even if you add more data to it, the pivot reflects the new data. Importing Data from the Web / Internet into Excel – creating web queries that refresh automatically: In Excel you can also import data directly from the web. You basically create a web query which you set to refresh automatically based on your preference. ★ My Online Excel Courses ► https://courses.xelplus.com/ ✉ Subscribe & get my TOP 10 Excel formulas e-book for free https://www.xelplus.com/free-ebook/ EXCEL RESOURCES I Recommend: https://www.xelplus.com/resources/

RICO: A Mobile App Dataset for Building Data-Driven Design Applications
RICO: A Mobile App Dataset for Building Data-Driven Design Applications Biplab Deka, Zifeng Huang, Chad Franzen, Joshua Hibschman, Daniel Afergan, Yang Li, Jeffrey Nichols, Ranjitha Kumar UIST '17: ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology Session: Crowd Abstract Data-driven models help mobile app designers understand best practices and trends, and can be used to make predictions about design performance and support the creation of adaptive UIs. This paper presents Rico, the largest repository of mobile app designs to date, created to support five classes of data-driven applications: design search, UI layout generation, UI code generation, user interaction modeling, and user perception prediction. To create Rico, we built a system that combines crowdsourcing and automation to scalably mine design and interaction data from Android apps at runtime. The Rico dataset contains design data from more than 9.7k Android apps spanning 27 categories. It exposes visual, textual, structural, and interactive design properties of more than 72k unique UI screens. To demonstrate the kinds of applications that Rico enables, we present results from training an autoencoder for UI layout similarity, which supports query- by-example search over UIs. UW Allen School Colloquium: Scott Linderman (Columbia University)
Machine Learning Models and Algorithms for Neuroscience Abstract: Advances in machine learning are profoundly impacting many scientific domains, offering new models and algorithms for discovering structure in large datasets. In parallel, neuroscience is experiencing a revolution of its own, as new brain recording technologies enable the measurement of neural activity at unprecedented scales. I will present my work at the intersection of these two fields. In my first example, I study brain recordings of C. elegans and develop interpretable state-space models inspired by the worm's natural behavioral program. Next, I use hypotheses about neural cell types and features to motivate a new class of models that combines networks and point processes. I apply these models to discover structure across a variety of brain areas. Finally, I will present novel, general-purpose Bayesian inference algorithms that enable models like these to be fit at the scales required by neural data. I will conclude with a vision of the future machine learning models and algorithms needed to catalyze next-generation neuroscience. Bio: Scott Linderman is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia University in the Departments of Computer Science and Statistics. He works at the intersection of machine learning and neuroscience, and he is advised by Professors Liam Paninski and David Blei. Scott completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Harvard University under the supervision of Professors Ryan Adams and Leslie Valiant, and he received his B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University. He is a recipient of the Simons Collaboration on the Global Brain Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Siebel Scholarship, and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship. His dissertation received the Leonard J. Savage Award from the International Society for Bayesian Analysis, and his work has been recognized with a Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics. Prior to graduate school, he worked at Microsoft as a software engineer on the Windows networking stack and lived just a few miles down the Burke-Gilman trail from the UW campus. Building Crossplatform Mobile Apps with the Rhodes Framework
Google Tech Talks March 4, 2009 ABSTRACT Rhodes is an open source Ruby-based MVC framework for building locally executing, device-optimized mobile applications which run on all smartphone devices. It is similar concept to frameworks such as Rails, Merb and Django but is much lighterweight in order to run locally on smartphones with limited memory and resources. Rhodes is primarily targeted at applications that work with synchronized local data from server application backends, using the other source component RhoSync . Rhodes also allows you to take advantage of native device capabilities such as GPS, PIM contacts and camera. Yet the majority of your interface development is done by modifying HTML templates. Rhodes is available for iPhone, Windows Mobile and Research in Motion, Symbian and Android smartphones. In this session we'll demonstrate building a mobile app from scratch which runs on all of these devices. Rhomobile is the open mobile framework company. Our mission is to build open source components to facilitate building crossplatform mobile apps quickly and with a great user experience. Our components include the Rhodes framework, the RhoSync synchronization server and the RhoVer mobile app provisioning server. Speaker: Adam Blum Currently CEO of stealth mode mobile software platform startup. Formerly the VP of Engineering of Mobio and Engineering director for Good Technology. Ultramarathoner, author and adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon West and UC Berkeley.
