Teaching Millennials and Generation Z - Dr. Jillian Gilbert

39:15
"Teaching Millennials and Generation Z" - Presented by Dr. Jillian Gilbert on November 23, 2014. As higher education institutions such as APU strive to identify the needs of future students, it is necessary to consider how students’ values and expectations are changing. This workshop will apply strategic foresight methods to compare generational values and experiences between Generation Y (Millennials) and the emerging generation -Generation Z. As these generations become the predominant profile within the classroom, this information will provide valuable insight into what will shape university students in the next ten years. In this interactive training, we will identify the benefits and challenges of the most widely accepted classroom instruction methods and then discuss which methods will be most effective in the future classroom. It is also necessary to redefine the role of the professor as well as consider the reciprocal relationship between professor and student. Participants will leave this discussion with a better understanding of how to effectively engage and equip future students.

MAGIC BOX LETTER TUTORIAL (A to Z) Sketching, Teaching or Craft for Kids

BOX LETTERS and SKETCHING is a creative way to gain attention, provoke interest and engage your audience in a lesson. Here is an easy tutorial to help you learn how to draw box letters. I learned this technique from OAC MINISTRIES. I use BOX LETTERING mostly as a lesson starter for the 'topic of the day' or sometimes in sketch handouts, posters or cards. 3 Basic Opening Strategy Principles | Chess

I'm going to talk to you today about the three principles to opening strategy. So when we get to the game we're always like, 'Uh, what do I do? There's so many pieces. I don't know how to start." Well I'm going to give you three steps that are going to help you create a strong, confident opening. First thing that we need to understand is these four center squares. These are considered a super square because this is where the center of the board is, the control center. For example, if I have my knight in the center of the board, my knight can control up to eight different squares, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. We can see that this is a very strong place for my knight. If I have my knight on the side of the board it can only control up to four squares, 1, 2, 3, 4. Therefore, my knight is stronger in the center whereas most pieces are stronger in the center of the board. So at the beginning of the game you want to think about center control. First thing we can try and do is get our pawns into the center. Very important to try to get our pawns to control the center. The next important step that we want to focus on is piece development. Now I like to think about my pieces as they are working for me. I want to give my pieces a job. If they're sitting back here they're not happy and they're not doing anything. So my next step is to bring my pieces out and have them working for me. Usually we bring out the knights before the bishops. So I can bring my knight to F-3 and my other knight to C-3 and then I'm bringing them towards the center. Notice how I did not bring my knight to H-3, that would not be a good choice. Towards the center. Next, I want to bring my bishops out, again towards the center controlling the center squares. The next step that we always want to consider is king safety, very important. I like to consider the king like a baby. The reason I consider the king a baby is because we always want to protect our babies just like we always want to protect our king. Therefore, the best way to protect your king at the beginning of the game is to castle. Now we have two places, two ways that we can castle. You can either castle on the king's side or on the queen's side. Right away I can see that I can castle on the king's side. To castle I move my king two spaces and then bring my rook to the other side and now my king is stuck behind a little fortress or, to keep with the theme of a baby, a crib and it is protected and safe. Just to review, the three important principles are controlling the center, piece development, and king safety. Those are the three things that we can do at the beginning of the game to go into the middle game confidently.

How to Say /s/ and /z/ (Frontal and Lateral Lisp)

08:13
If your “soup” is turning into “thoop” and your “zippers” are “thippers”, you may have a frontal lisp. My article on fixing lateral lisps has received a lot of traffic and I’ve had many requests for a similar article on frontal lisps, so here goes! What Is a Frontal Lisp? Let’s start at the beginning. A frontal lisp, also known as an interdental lisp, occurs when a child says the /s/ and /z/ sounds with the tongue pushed too far forward. This causes /s/ and /z/ to sound more like “th”. Frontal lisps are sometimes caused by tongue thrust, which is when the tongue is consistently too far forward, including during swallowing and at rest (when the tongue is not doing anything at all). Not all frontal lisps are caused by tongue thrust but some are. Tongue thrust requires additional types of therapy that are not discussed in this article. Today’s article will just focus on treatment for a plain old frontal lisp. How Do You Treat Frontal Lisp? I’m so glad you asked! :-) Frontal lisp therapy can be broken down into six steps. Step One: Assessment The first thing you will need to do for frontal lisp therapy is to assess the lisp. You don’t need any standardized tests for this, you just need a lot of words for the child to say so you can evaluate which sounds have the lisp and which ones don’t. I recommend you test both the /s/ and /z/ in all word positions. This means testing when the sound is at the beginning, middle, and end of the word as well as in consonant clusters (blends) at both the beginning and end of the word. Simply have the child say words with the sounds in all of those different positions. If the child can read, just have him read word lists. If the child cannot read, you can have him label pictures that represent the words. Below are my word lists for /s/ and /z/ in all positions, or you can download my articulation cards which contain pictures of /s/ and /z/ words in the initial, medial, and final position as well as /s/ blends in the initial position of words. Just write down which words the child can say correctly and which words are lisped. Visit the original post to download the /s/ and /z/ Artic Cards and Worksheets for Free - https://www.speechandlanguagekids.com/speech-therapy-frontal-lisp/. Initial /s/ *Say *See *Siren *Soap *Soup *Second *Simple *Sock *Sad *Soot *Sun *Sound *Soy Medial /s/....to find out more, click here to read the entire post: https://www.speechandlanguagekids.com/speech-therapy-frontal-lisp/.

How to teach reading with phonics - 1/12 - The Alphabet & Letter Sounds - Learn English Phonics!

06:09
http://www.englishanyone.com/power-learning/ Learn to express yourself confidently in fluent English and sound like a native speaker with our FREE Power Learning video course! The Sounds of English, a FREE, comprehensive series of 12 videos, teaches phonics and pronunciation to non-native and beginning native learners of English. Learn to spell, read and pronounce English like native speakers with these easy lessons. Great for self-study, or the whole family! Build confidence and get fluent faster! Lesson 1 - The Sounds of English Learn the alphabet, short vowel and consonants sounds, and begin developing great pronunciation. Welcome to The Sounds of English with EnglishAnyone.com! The three primary colors are red, yellow and blue. If you mix these colors, you can create a whole rainbow of new colors. The English alphabet has 26 letters. Mix them correctly and you will be able to spell, read and say the more than 40 different sounds of English. English can be confusing! We know! Why do some letters make different sounds? "On" becomes "one." "One" becomes "phone." And why do different letters make the same sounds? "Newt" and "suit" both share the same "oo" sound. Native speakers can also get confused. We misspell words all the time! But don't worry; If we learned English, anyone can! If you watch these simple, fun lessons, you will learn new words, improve your pronunciation, gain the confidence to speak, and start getting fluent! Because we want you to learn quickly, you won't see every English letter and sound combination in this video series. But, we'll show you some words that break the rules and you'll be learning more than enough to teach yourself English. Now, sit back, relax and start learning! Great pronunciation begins with mastering the alphabet! Letter sounds change, but letter names do not. So, let's learn the alphabet first. Here we go. Please repeat after me. (Repeat alphabet letters) Now, let's forget the names of the letters and learn some sounds. The sounds of English are like music. The vowel sounds are the melody of English. The vowels are A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y. Vowels can make many sounds, but we will teach you the short vowel sounds first. Please repeat the short vowel sounds. (Repeat short vowel sounds) Very good! The other letters of the alphabet are the consonants. These sounds are like the beat in the music of English. ("tuh," "kuh," "sh," "ch") Consonants also make many sounds, but you will learn the short consonants sounds first. You'll hear two sounds for the letters C and G. The hard C sounds like this (kuh). The soft C sounds like this (sss). The hard G sounds like this (guh). The soft G sounds like this (juh). Usually, if the letters A, O or U follow the letters C or G, then C and G make their hard sounds. If the letters E or I follow the letters C and G, then C and G make their soft sounds. Please repeat the short consonant sounds. (Repeat short consonant sounds) Great job! Review this lesson any time! In lesson two, we'll start building words! You might also draw a scene that includes some of the facts that you want students to remember for the topic or unit you are teaching and let them add to it and color it. Sometimes the best homework we can give students is the kind that utilizes proven memory strategies. Create Acrostics and Mnemonics Mnemonic devices are a type of linguistic memory strategy. Using a word or sentence to represent a list of things or a series of information that you want students to remember is an age-old concept. For instance, the term LASER means "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation." Use a word to represent information where each letter of that word stands for something. Another type of mnemonic is an acrostic: a sentence where each word represents part of the information to be remembered. In the example below, our high school science class was learning taxonomy. A common acrostic for this concept is "King Philip came over for Grandma's soup." We wrote out the sentence, and then we created a visual by tracing pictures out of a coloring book. The verbal information, supported by the visual image, incorporates a number of brain-based memory principles. Having your students draw a snapshot device is a much more meaningful homework assignment than filling in a worksheet. You might also draw a scene that includes some of the facts that you want students to remember for the topic or unit you are teaching and let them add to it and color it.
