With this project you can find out! Knowing the temperature in a project can a very useful piece of data to have handy. Knowledge of temperature can help regulate room temperature for a comfortable environment, ensure that a 3D printer bed is hot enough for materials like ABS to stick to its surface, prevent engine overheating, and keeps food from being burnt. For this article, we are only concerned with one type of sensor that can measure temperature. This sensor is called a thermistor. Quoting from the wiki article which says it best, a thermistor is, “. . . a type of resistor whose resistance varies significantly with temperature, more so than standard resistors.” We will use an Arduino to measure and process the reading from a thermistor and then convert this into a human friendly format of common temperature units. How temperature adjustments affect long-term global warming

Over the past two centuries the way we measure temperature has changed dramatically. This complicates matters for scientists putting together a long-term, consistent estimate of how global temperatures are changing. Analysis by Carbon Brief comparing raw global temperature records to the adjusted data finds that adjustments have relatively little impact on global temperatures, particularly over the past 50 years. Note: In the video, an example is given of ship measurements using buckets being warmer than ocean measurements due to differences in air and ocean temperatures. In most cases, evaporative cooling during the period between when the bucket is filled and the temperature is measured will cause the water in the bucket to be colder than the original ocean temperature. Thus, on aggregate, bucket measurements are too cold, not too warm, and ocean temperatures pre-1940 are adjusted up to correct for these too-cold readings as mentioned later in the video. Although named after Italian physicist Galileo Galilei, the thermometer described in this article was not invented by him. Galileo did invent a thermometer, called Galileo's air thermometer (more accurately termed a thermoscope), in or before 1603.[1] The so-called 'Galileo thermometer' was invented by a group of academics and technicians known as the Accademia del Cimento of Florence,[2] who included Galileo's pupil, Torricelli and Torricelli's pupil Viviani.[3] Details of the thermometer were published in the Saggi di naturali esperienze fatte nell'Academia del Cimento sotto la protezione del Serenissimo Principe Leopoldo di Toscan e descrittedal segretario di essa Accademia (1666), the Academy's main publication. The English translation of this work (1684) describes the device ('The Fifth Thermometer') as 'slow and lazy', a description that is reflected in an alternative Italian name for the invention, the termometro lento (slow thermometer).[4] The outer vessel was filled with 'rectified spirits of wine' (a concentrated solution of ethanol in water); the weights of the glass bubbles were adjusted by grinding a small amount of glass from the sealed end; and a small air space was left at the top of the main vessel to allow 'for the Liquor to rarefie' [i.e. expand]. The device now called the Galileo thermometer was revived in the modern era by the Natural History Museum, London, which started selling a version in the 1990s.[5]

Selecting artificial grow lights can require quite a bit of research and sometimes growers are faced with conflicting information. How can we select the best lights for our application? Should we rely on weed growing forums for all of the facts? What about university level research? This is the 1st video of a multi-part series that is intended to explain many basic principles surrounding plant lighting and its application in horticulture. The focus of this video is all about Light Quality. What effect do different light wavelengths have on plants and their development? Do plants need UV light? How does Far Red light effect plant growth? Do plants use green light or is green light wasted energy? These questions are answered, along with scientific research that you can read more about, depending on your level of interest. We'll see how color wavelengths are measured in nanometers. What is PAR light (Photosynthetically Active Radiation)? Various light types have unique spectral profiles, as measured by a spectrometer. We'll quickly look at a few charts from LEDs, fluorescents, high-pressure sodiums and metal halides. Many of these can be rated on the Kelvin color temperature scale, which is discussed as well. When considering LED vs HID, the spectral composition can be a major factor. Some LEDs have a few limited color bands (in blue and red ranges). Some include a "full spectrum" light source. How do they make white light from LEDs? One common approach, shown in this video, is to use a phosphor coating. This is the basics of plant lighting and grow lights. It is intended to benefit a broad audience, from home gardeners, to greenhouse growers, to vertical farmers and even "medical" growers. But Light Quality is only one of many factors that are worth consideration. In future videos we'll explore Light Intensity and how horticulturists measure it. We'll look at PPFD vs Lumens. Then we'll examine differences in light efficiency. The digital thermometers tend to read the temperature more quickly and accurately, and some models have an alarm when the thermometer hits a certain temperature. Many models have markers for the various stages of sugar cooking. A candy thermometer is similar to a meat thermometer except that it can read higher temperatures (usually 400 °F/200 °C or more). The first candy thermometers were created in 1272 by Bennet Muzilla of Frankfurt Germany. He used it to measure the temperatures of sugar solutions while making hard candies.

If you’re new in the automation world, or if you just want to learn more about measurement and measuring devices, this article can tell you a bit about the base of the automation pyramid. First off, I explained the basic concept of measure, control, and actuate in a process. I promise, if you’ve ever taken a shower, then you know this concept. And boy, I hope you’ve taken a shower at some point in your life. When you start the shower, you need to check the temperature of the water, right? You stick your hand or foot or whatever in the water to find out how hot it is. And voilà – you deployed the measure step! At this point, you need to decide whether the temperature is right. Here, your control system – your brain, in this case – analyzes what you felt and compares it to what you want (setpoint). But what happens if the water feels colder or hotter than your setpoint? Then time to actuate! So you use your other hand to adjust the shower. After that, the process happens again until you find your setpoint and finally get in the shower. This explanation creates a relationship between process control and daily life. The same cycle happens in automation, where you need to measure (field devices), control (PLC, DCS), and actuate (valves, pumps, etc.). Now you can explain the cycle to anyone who takes a shower! VIDEO CONTENT 01:43 NET RADIATION Net radiation is the difference between incoming radiation and outgoing radiation at the surface. There are both shortwave and longwave components to net radiation. The image shows the typical values of the four different components that make up net radiation on a clear summer day over vegetation near solar noon. 02:28 Net Shortwave-The largest component of net radiation is the incoming shortwave component, this is solar radiation coming from the sun. Outgoing shortwave radiation is the amount of shortwave radiation that is reflected back from the incoming shortwave radiation. If we were to take a measurement of the sky with an infrared radiometer and put the temperature in to the Stefan Boltzmann equation we would get a number that is a lot less than the incoming longwave radiation. This is because infrared radiometers only measure between 8 and 14 micron and pyrgeometers measure all the radiation. The temperature difference is dependent on the radiation incident on both surfaces. The surfaces are measuring all of the wavelengths at the same time this is why it is called all-wave. 24:51 Examples of this type is the Rebs model Q*7 and Kipp and Zonen NR Lite 2. 27:10 Intermediate Types of Net Radiometers There is only one example of this type of net radiometer that we are aware of and it is no longer available. Essentially you had a single thermopile that is measuring the net difference shortwave radiation and measuring the net difference between longwave radiation. The other intermediate type has two separate thermopiles.
