Foundations: The value of block play

29:32
From this flows rich social and cognitive learning as well as confidence and independent thought. Because there is no correct use of blocks, there is no failure; each success encourages the next experiment. Block play provides amazing opportunities to observe children, giving glimpses into their thinking. We can almost hear a child’s thoughts as we watch and listen. Children use the language of blocks to communicate ideas, building a firm foundation for future forms of self-expression, such as written language. The foundation comes first!

Principle 1: Creating a Foundation / Core Values

00:53
Principle 1: Core ethical and performance values are defined, implemented and embedded into school culture. Schools that effectively promote good character come to agreement on the core values they most wish to instill in their students. Some schools use other terms such as virtues, traits, pillars, or expectations to refer to the desirable character qualities they wish to foster. The school makes clear that these basic human values transcend religious and cultural differences and express our common humanity. Examples of core ethical values are caring, honesty, fairness, and respect for self and others. Examples of performance values include diligence, best effort, perseverance, critical thinking, and positive attitude. The school community selects and commits to its core values as the foundation for how people interact and do their best work in the school. In schools committed to character development, the selected core values drive all decision making, codes of conducts, relationships, and hiring practices.

How Morals Influence If You're Liberal Or Conservative

Are your political views based on facts or your morals? What makes a libertarian tick? Peter Ditto explains how morals shape our worldview. Subscribe! http://bit.ly/1fUWHyY How Power Makes People Selfish: https://youtu.be/0vvl46PmCfE UC Irvine Professor Peter Ditto studies human judgment and decision-making. Ditto is fascinated by biases and "motivated reasoning," where people's beliefs and morals influence their interpretation of facts. Ditto started in health psychology but soon found an even richer trove of human biases: American politics, where liberals and conservatives seem to operate on completely different sets of facts. Ditto's research finds that liberals and conservatives are easy to characterize based on their moral beliefs, but where do libertarians fit in? Foundations of Morality 2 (Re: TJdoeslife)

10:56
All rationality is based on a foundation of irrationality. I think that core values and instinct are the two irrational bases from which all rational human behavior (moral philosophy included) spring. From there, I give some hope to the prospect of modifying our core values, which are changeable, in order to manipulate our instinct (which is non-changeable) so that our actions can overcome some of our less desired traits or natures, and steer us to a brighter future. This is a response to TJdoeslife's video about the human need to compete- instinctively valuing their own success over others'. This is on the same subject as another walk and talk series I'm doing, so I'm titling it as such. (I haven't finished my initial thoughts, which is why I haven't posted Foundations of Morality 1, as it's incomplete for now.)

Newton and Locke: Foundations of the Enlightenment (The Philosophes: Thinkers of the Enlightenment)

06:23
https://www.tomrichey.net/enlightenment.html In this first segment of my lecture on the philosophes (Enlightenment thinkers), I note the contributions of John Locke and Isaac Newton in laying the foundations for the Enlightenment. Although Locke and Newton lived before the Enlightenment, the philosophes relied heavily on their ideas. John Locke's social contract, which asserted that governments exist to protect individual liberty, was foundational for those who sought to advance freedom of thought in the eighteenth century. Isaac Newton's laws of physics, which outlined a rational universe governed by natural law, became popular with philosophes like Voltaire who wished to apply scientific principles to religion and society. Although Newton and Locke had come and gone by the time the Enlightenment hit Europe in full-swing, they gave the movement a starting point and a foundation that it would have otherwise lacked. 20. Contemporary Communitarianism (I)

48:39
Moral Foundations of Politics (PLSC 118) In addition to the traditionalist-conservative view covered last time, the other anti-Enlightenment school the course explores is contemporary communitarianism. While Burke and Devlin appealed to tradition as the basis for our values, communitarians appeal to the community-accepted values as the basis for what should guide us. Communitarian Richard Rorty criticizes the Enlightenment endeavor of justifying philosophy from the ground up from indubitable premises as a fool's errand and a dangerous mug's game. The main focus of today's class is the communitarianism of Alasdair MacIntyre. Professor Shapiro introduces this school by exploring the symptoms of the problem wrought by the Enlightenment. One is the rise of emotivism and complete moral subjectivism; that is, the abandonment of the instruments for making moral judgments as a consequence of trying to justify philosophy from the ground up. The second symptom is the triumph of instrumentalism and the rejection of teleology, which is actually a coping mechanism for society's deep pluralism of values. Professor Shapiro discusses MacIntyre's two symptoms, as well as introduces his conceptions of practices and virtues. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction: Alasdair MacIntyre and Contemporary Communitarianism 05:25 - Chapter 2. Alasdair MacIntyre and Other Anti-enlightenment Thinkers 12:13 - Chapter 3. A Closer Look at MacIntyre's Book 16:18 - Chapter 4. Emotivism: From Subjective Certainty to Relativist Morality 22:52 - Chapter 5. Behavioral Foundations for Global Peace

05:11
The great diversity across world culture shares a common unity of purpose through an overarching virtuous foundation conducive to global economic cooperation and inclusiveness. Although each culture chiefly favors its own ethical traditions, the unprecedented introduction of a newly devised grand-unified synthesis of the major groupings of virtues and values dramatically accentuates such a shared ethical heritage independent of cultural exclusivity. Nostalgia • Approval .................. Guilt • Leniency Glory • Prudence .................. Honor • Justice Providence • Faith .................. Liberty • Hope Grace • Beauty .................. Free-Will • Truth Tranquility • Ecstasy .................. Equality • Bliss Desire • Solicitude .................. Worry • Submission Dignity • Temperance ............ Integrity • Fortitude Civility • Charity .................. Austerity • Decency Magnanim. • Goodness ....... Equanim. • Wisdom Love • Joy ............................ Peace • Harmony This grand-scale unification of traditional value ethics encompasses the major groupings of virtues, values, and ideals revered the world over, organized as an ascending motivational hierarchy of personal, group, universal, humanitarian, and transcendental authority perspectives. This hierarchy is schematically based upon a behavioral foundation within the realm of instrumental conditioning permitting a secularly-based scientific validation effectively coexisting with traditional value ethics. The systematic organization of the ethical hierarchy further permits the construction of what are termed the schematic definitions, spelling out (in longhand) the precise location of each virtue or value within the linguistic matrix and providing a motivational calculus dictating the strict transformational rules for how each level meshes with those above or below it. When further expanded to include the transitional variations characterizing the lesser virtues, a complete behavioral overview of the virtuous realm finally becomes conceptually complete. The truest applications for such an ethical system, however, derive precisely from a moral contrast with the opposing realm of the vices, where each virtue is necessarily paired with corresponding antonym (or vice) permitting negative transactions to be analyzed in terms of their potential for conversion into positive ones (and vice versa). This necessarily encompasses Aristotle's major categories of the vices of defect based upon the behavioral paradigm of punishment, permitting a complete ethical system through a systematic contrast with the virtuous realm. Laziness • Treachery .................. Negligence • Vindictive. Infamy • Insurgency .................. Dishonor • Vengeance Prodigality • Betrayal .................. Slavery • Despair Wrath • Ugliness .................. Tyranny • Hypocrisy Anger • Abomination .................. Prejudice • Perdition Apathy • Spite .................. Indifference • Malice Foolishness • Gluttony ........... Caprice • Cowardice Vulgarity • Avarice .................. Cruelty • Antagonism Oppression • Evil ............... Persecution • Cunning Hatred • Iniquity ............... Belligerence • Turpitude Indeed, this newly secularized interpretation further extends beyond the basic virtues and values to include Aristotle's additional realm of the vices of excess, criminality and hypercriminality, and even the communicational factors underlying the mental disorders. Although necessarily only a brief overview, this expanded format is depicted here in terms of the positive domain specifying cooperation and encompassing the major and lesser virtues as well as the affiliated range of extremes. A similar depiction portrays the contrasting selfish domain of defect encompassing criminality and hypercriminality, aspects crucial to diagnosing the dynamics underlying political corruption and global terrorism. This breakthrough innovation provides an invaluable new secular tool for encouraging cultural inclusiveness without impinging upon rich global diversity, presaging a new era in global peace and prosperity. http://www.world-peace.org

IMS-Microsoft Research Workshop: Foundations of Data Science - False Discovery Rates - a new deal

30:09
Session Chair Intro - Rafael Irizarry Harvard University Session Chair Intro: Statistical and Computational Challenges in Biology Matthew Stephens University of Chicago False Discovery Rates - a new deal False Discovery Rate (FDR) methodology, first put forward by Benjamini and Hochberg, and further developed by many authors - including Storey, Tibshirani, and Efron - is now one of the most widely used statistical methods in large-scale scientific data analysis, particularly in genomics. A typical genomics workflow consists of i) estimating thousands of effects, and their associated p values; ii) feeding these p values to software (e.g. the widely used qvalue package) to estimate the FDR for any given significance threshold. In this talk we take a fresh look at this problem, and highlight two deficiencies of this standard pipeline that we believe could be improved. First, current methods, being based directly on p values (or z scores), fail to fully account for the fact that some measurements are more precise than others. Second, current methods assume that the least significant p values (those near 1) are all null - something that initially appears intuitive, but will not necessarily hold in practice. We suggest simple approaches to address both issues, and demonstrate the potential for these methods to increase the number of discoveries at a given FDR threshold. We also discuss the connection between this problem and shrinkage estimation, and problems involving sparsity more generally.

___ Vieni a discuterne qui, siamo già a migliaia: http://www.byoblu.com/unisciti-alla-grande-comunita-byoblu-telegram

The Constitution, the Articles, and Federalism: Crash Course US History #8

13:04
In which John Green teaches you about the United States Constitution. During and after the American Revolutionary War, the government of the new country operated under the Articles of Confederation. While these Articles got the young nation through its war with England, they weren't of much use when it came to running a country. So, the founding fathers decided try their hand at nation-building, and they created the Constitution of the United States, which you may remember as the one that says We The People at the top. John will tell you how the convention came together, some of the compromises that had to be made to pass this thing, and why it's very lucky that the framers installed a somewhat reasonable process for making changes to the thing. You'll learn about Shays' Rebellion, the Federalist Papers, the elite vs rabble dynamic of the houses of congress, and start to find out just what an anti-federalist is. The Position & Authority of Christians

This is the first sermon I've ever uploaded, but I'm excited by it because it demonstrates how pastors can wisely instruct people in political engagement, without being partisan or divisive in their congregations. In this message, Ps Patsy Cameneti teaches that while prayer is the most important & indispensable thing, it's not the only thing. We all also have to be practically involved in the battle against opposition to the plans & purposes of God. MORE from Patsy at http://Cameneti.net ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ What's your opinion? The Ethics of Discernment: Lonergan's Foundations for Ethics

26:02
by Patrick H. Byrne, In The Ethics of Discernment, Patrick H. Byrne presents an approach to ethics that builds upon the cognitional theory and the philosophical method of self-appropriation that Bernard Lonergan introduced in his book Insight, as well as upon Lonergan’s later writing on ethics and values. Extending Lonergan’s method into the realm of ethics, Byrne argues that we can use self-appropriation to come to objective judgements of value. The Ethics of Discernment is an introspective analysis of that process, in which sustained ethical inquiry and attentiveness to feelings as “intentions of value” leads to a rich conception of the good. Written both for those with an interest in Lonergan’s philosophy and for those interested in theories of ethics who have only a limited knowledge of Lonergan’s work, Byrne’s book is the first detailed exposition of an ethical theory based on Lonergan’s philosophical method.

Religious Education is being replaced with the United Nations' "Values"

31:18
There's a concerted attack against the teaching of Special Religious Education (SRE) in public schools, but what's more sinister is the value system replacing it. The shadowy hands behind what our children are being taught belong to our old friends at the UN (Useless Nations?). Can anyone say "globalisation"? Because of the possible repercussions against her youngest child who's still in high school, "Mrs A" can't be properly identified. I can tell you she was a teacher for ten years before moving into professional education - teaching teachers. Now she works for external contractors to state departments of education, helping them skill up in specific subjects, delivering training in curriculum, and gets to interact with hundreds of teachers each year. With this special access, she is well positioned to share what's really going on in our schools and their staff rooms that the general public has no idea about. * * * * * * * ALL MY VIDEOS have been demonitised by YouTube. The Madi Cultural and Development Foundation has been launched in Kampala to preserve the positive cultural values of the the Madi community in Uganda and the other countries where they are scattered. The foundation, formed back in 2002 will also translate the cultural values into the development of the Madi people both at regional and household levels. They also want to encourage the new generation to embrace their traditional food, which they say has been abandoned by their tribes-mates who live in the urban areas. The Foundation of America

10:36
The importance of understanding the foundations of this great country are essential to maintaining your way of life. America was founded on Judeo-Christian values and traditions. The men who drafted and signed documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution understood and wanted to pass on to posterity for protection of this nation, risking their lives and fortunes to defend it. The common attitude of many teachers and students today is that our founding fathers were deists. Christian parents should be ashamed that the public school system somehow perpetrates such lies and defamation of great men who had unwavering faith towards God.

PHILOSOPHY OF ECONOMICS: Foundations of Welfare Economics

12:09
Normative welfare economics is a field of study which lies at the intersection of economics, moral philosophy, and political philosophy. It is the ideal place to start a discussion in the philosophy of economics because it concerns a debate about what values ought to guide public policy formation and assessment. It also gets us talking about the relation between rationality and values. In this video, we will consider an essay by Hausman and McPherson called “The Philosophical Foundations of Normative Economics" which surveys the landscape of the field of mainstream normative economics. There are two premises crucial for the mainstream economic analysis: Premise 1 says that human beings are rational, which must be understood as meaning that the explanations of individual choices often justify those choices. Premise 2 holds that the central explanatory principles of economics should be principles of rational individual choice. Together, these premises form the basis of economic assumptions which guide mainstream normative economics. There are less sophisticated and more sophisticated versions of the thesis, as we shall see in future videos. We should be careful to recognize the important distinction between the ‘normative’ and the ‘moral.’ Here, when we say that the economic conception of rationality is ‘normative’ we are not necessarily saying that the economic theory of rationality is a guide for ethical decisions. Rather, appeal to ‘welfare economics’ as normative must be understood in terms of the evaluation of economic states of affairs as it pertains to the consequences for individual welfare as considered from the point of view of the economic agents themselves. Thus, according to Hausman, the concerns of mainstream normative economists are ethical only in the sense that they are concerned about the well being of whatever group the policy is supposed to benefit. The reason for investigating normative economics is that it is a hotly contested intersection of ethical and economic inquiry with important implications for public policy which hang on the results of investigating and deciding on the competing methodologies for how economic questions should be addressed from a policy analysis perspective. For a full and comprehensive survey in the philosophical and scientific foundations of normative economics, see: Hausman, Daniel and McPherson, Michael, 2006. "The Philosophical Foundations of Mainstream Normative Economics" in THE PHILOSOPHY OF ECONOMICS: AN ANTHOLOGY. 3rd ed. Cambridge University Press, 2008. For a broad overview of the philosophy of economics in history and practice see: http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/economics/
(Karen Klein) Petition To Foundation For A Better Life

00:44
This is a petition to the executive officers of Foundation For A Better Life to consider honoring Karen Klein with a values campaign for grace under torment from teenage bullies. http://bit.ly/MOMJ34 Summary: School bus monitor Karen Klein, an elderly grandmother of eight, became of victim of bullying by a group of teenage students on their way home from Athena Middle School in Greece, New York. A disturbing video of the students verbally taunting and harassing Klein was posted first on Facebook.com and then uploaded to an anonymous Youtube.com account before miraculously going viral, sparking global outrage and inspired an online campaign for donations to send Klein on a well-deserved vacation. Klein is hearing-impaired and did not hear all of the comments until she was shown the video at the police station. She says the most disturbing was: "You're so ugly, your kids should kill themselves." Klein's son committed suicide 10 years ago. At one point Klein says: "Unless you have something nice to say, don't say anything at all." At at time when bullying is reaching epic proportion, a little reminder is needed for us keep our minds and hearts open. This quote should be a tagline promoted to all individuals regardless of their age, ethnicity, citizenship or religion. Building business on character ethic - Kevin Byrne at TEDxNoviSad

18:04
What are the foundations of a successful business? Kevin Byrne shares lessons from his own experience, explaining the importance of vision and values. He would always start with the end in mind, nurturing people instead of growing business. After a huge storm in the UK in the late '90s, Kevin Byrne started a company Checkatrade to help people avoid cowboy builders. He built his company from scratch and today, he is one of the leading entrepreneurs in the UK, and one of the bearers of the Olympic torch in London 2012. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 110) This lecture introduces students to two broad theories of how the mind relates to the body. Dualism is the ubiquitous and intuitive feeling that our conscious mind is separate from our physical bodies, whereas Materialism is the idea that all of our mental states are caused by physical states of the brain. This lecture reviews arguments explaining why materialism has become the predominant theory of mind in psychology. MAPSYS Tech Minute - Document Imaging Foundations

03:11
http://www.mapsysinc.com/document-imaging-foundations [email protected] 614-224-5193 TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to the MAPSYS Tech Minute, I'm Chris Heiberger and the topic is Document Management. Whether you've got a small project to clear out your file rooms and reclaim space or want to integrate document images in to your daily work flow, we've got the right solution for your business. Document Imaging Foundations is a Microsoft Gold Certified solution developed by MAPSYS to meet the needs of our customers, who expressed a desire to have a comprehensive solution that was reliable, affordable, and could grow as your needs grow. The scanning interface is easy to use and was designed to support quick indexing of documents and easy retrieval. Many of our customers integrate Document Imaging Foundations with their processing systems, so documents are readily available by hitting a function key or clicking on an icon to get to the information they need quickly. Additionally, Document Imaging Foundations can often easily integrate with your processing system, allowing a user to key in a primary index and then pull other important index values from your database to support retrieval of documents by a person's name, company name, date, etc. This integration reduces data entry errors as well. Other indexing methods can also be used, such as bar codes or OCR. These types of methods further reduce the time it takes to get documents into the system, and they are immediately available to everyone. Your system may generate documents like invoices or purchase orders. Document Imaging Foundations can capture those electronic documents and their index values and store them, without having to print, scan or index. You may also want to create a document workflow for processes such as Accounts Payable that might require approvals to be completed by someone within the organization. Route documents, add comments, and complete tasks without passing paper! Another important consideration in any imaging solution is security. Document Imaging Foundations can be tied in to your active directory to define role based access, or permissions can be set up within the application itself. There is also functionality that allows redaction, and users can either be allowed to view redacted information or not based on the permissions granted. If you currently don't have a document imaging solution, have a solution that you are not happy with, or can't get the support from your current vendor then it is time to call us and set up a time for a demo. Our experienced teams have implemented this solution within manufacturing companies, financial companies, municipal courts, state, county, and local government offices. Our pricing model is also simple. You pay for the server license and the cost of services based on your installation Our goal is to make the system fit the way you do business, rather than make you change the way you do business to allow for imaging. You'll find my contact information below.
