Vanguard's recommended international allocation

04:07
Research has shown that adding international stocks and bonds to your portfolio helps reduce overall volatility. Vanguard experts Andrew Patterson and Scott Donaldson explain how this works and how investors can go about determining just how much to add. Please remember that all investments involve some risk. Be aware that fluctuations in the financial markets and other factors may cause declines in the value of your account. There is no guarantee that any particular asset allocation or mix of funds will meet your investment objectives or provide you with a given level of income. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss. Bond funds are subject to the risk that an issuer will fail to make payments on time, and that bond prices will decline because of rising interest rates or negative perceptions of an issuer's ability to make payments. This hangout is for educational purposes only. We recommend that you consult a tax or financial advisor about your individual situation. Advisory services are provided by Vanguard Advisers, Inc. International Stocks: Should You Have Foreign Exposure in Your Portfolio?

03:41
Popular answers range from 50% to zero. Right now, the U.S. stock market accounts for about 40% of the world’s stock market cap -- a fairly massive fraction considering that the country has less than 5% of the globe’s population. But that still leaves another 60% of public company stock being traded on foreign exchanges, and some of those are in emerging markets where one might expect faster growth than our mature economy could deliver. This leads to a natural question -- and one that was asked recently by a Motley Fool Answers listener: How much of a well-diversified portfolio should be allocated into international stocks? There’s a wide range of thought on the matter, but for this episode, hosts Alison Southwick and Robert Brokamp have special guest Buck Hartzell, director of Investor Learning and Operations at The Motley Fool, to help break down the arguments. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to The Motley Fool's YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheMotleyFool Or, follow our Google+ page: https://plus.google.com/+MotleyFool/posts Inside The Motley Fool: Check out our Culture Blog! http://culture.fool.com Join our Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/themotleyfool Follow The Motley Fool on Twitter: https://twitter.com/themotleyfool

If Everyone Bought Index Funds...

04:55
If the majority of the market bought only index funds then it will essentially inflate the stocks that are included in the index. We already see this happening with stocks that are higher valued when they are included in the index as well as higher volatility during down turns. As the market moves towards more and more passive fund style, we will see this effect emphasized. This realization should make you think twice about the future of the market as a whole as 30% of all market values is passively traded right now as opposed to the estimated 50% in 2024. Vanguard Founder Jack Bogle's '90s Interview Shows His Investing Philosophy

05:44
Vanguard founder Jack Bogle was famous for making investing accessible to the everyday person through index funds – funds that match a market barometer like the S&P 500. His message was simple: why waste money on expensive fees and commissions for complex funds when market barometers often outperform them? That message remained remarkably consistent throughout his career. Jack Bogle needed hefty amounts of brainpower and market know-how to put together the first index fund. But for investors wanting to cash in on his idea, it's become pretty easy. In 1975, the founder of Vanguard Group, who died Wednesday, was able to turn a long-held belief into reality, namely that it was far more profitable to follow the market than fight it. Most mutual fund managers who picked stocks couldn't keep up with basic benchmarks like the S&P 500, much less beat them, he found. So he turned his thoughts into action, putting together the first fund that simply followed the S&P 500, minus a small management cost that was much cheaper than the active funds of the day. » Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. Jack Bogle on Index Funds, Vanguard, and Investing Advice

51:14
Jack Bogle transformed the investment management industry. Over a career lasting nearly half a century, Bogle was a crusader for individual investors, working to bring the interests of asset managers in line with those of their investment clients. In 1975, Bogle founded the Vanguard Group, structuring the business as a mutual company, meaning that Vanguard is owned by the funds it manages and, as a result, the funds' investors. A year later, Bogle and Vanguard introduced the first ever index mutual fund available to the general public, aiming to track the performance of the broader market while charging the lowest fees possible. At first, many in the investment industry snickered at Vanguard's new index funds, but over time Bogle's idea took hold. While maintaining some of the lowest fees in the business, Vanguard has grown its assets under management from $1.8 billion at its founding to $5.3 trillion as of September 30, 2018, making Vanguard the second largest asset manager in the world. Despite Vanguard's incredible success, Bogle didn't become fantastically rich. Instead, Jack passed on as much savings as possible to Vanguard investors, bringing fees for his funds to razor-thin levels (and dragging the rest of the fund market with him). As a result, Bogle helped all investors get better returns on their retirement savings, drastically reducing underperformance caused by high management fees. As Bogle said in 2012, "My ideas are very simple. In investing, you get what you don't pay for." All investors are indebted to Jack Bogle for his efforts over 40+ years to make the investment industry better serve the interests of individuals. As we remember Bogle's life and his contributions, we hope you'll enjoy this conversation between Bogle and Motley Fool Motley Fool CEO Tom Gardner recorded in 2016. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to The Motley Fool's YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheMotleyFool Or, follow our Google+ page: https://plus.google.com/+MotleyFool/posts Inside The Motley Fool: Check out our Culture Blog! http://culture.fool.com Join our Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/themotleyfool Follow The Motley Fool on Twitter: https://twitter.com/themotleyfool

CRUSHING The S&P 500 Index With Dividend Growth Stocks (Dividend Stocks Vs. Index Funds)

18:42
I continue to receive questions about dividend growth stocks versus index funds (especially the S&P 500 index fund). Questions are pouring in asking why I personally invest in dividend stocks for cash flow, when supposedly most investors cannot beat the average, the S&P 500 index. Today, I want to share some personal examples from my portfolio on how I am completely crushing the S&P 500. In fact, my capital appreciation alone has surpassed the S&P 500. When I factor in dividends as well, I'm completely crushing it. This may come as a surprise to some subscribers because my financial modeling is quite conservative. Whenever I produce a video about dividend investing, I tend to forecast future results at a compounded rate of 7%. Why is that? I'm a conservative forecaster and modeler by nature. I'd rather set myself up for an upside surprise than face a downside one. (And, this is completely different than what most others do in the space. Many people out there are aggressive at modeling their future returns.) Since the S&P 500 has historically driven 10% returns per year (dating back to 1928), I model at 7% to adjust for inflation and uncertainty. That being said, my results in reality have far surpassed my forecasts. Nonetheless, I still forecast conservatively because the market is at all time highs and I don't want to set myself up for any surprises. I like to model conservatively, while dreaming big! To illustrate this point, I share four real world examples from my personal portfolio. I share my personal stock portfolio returns as compared to the S&P 500 during the same time period. You will quickly see why I have fallen in love with dividend growth investing. Not only is it the ideal vehicle for someone like myself approaching financial freedom, but it's also a strategy that can beat the benchmarks (sometimes handsomely). I'm not trying to discount the value of index funds and the S&P 500. I think there are some really key use cases for such mutual funds, especially in retirement accounts that do not offer the ability to buy individual stocks. Everyone will find a unique investing strategy that works for them, and I respect all strategies. I am trying to provide a counter example today because I am forging a unique path. And, the media is so filled with press about index funds, but rarely focuses on the unspoken power of dividend growth investing. The highlight of today's video: Learn about one stock where I'm personally yielding 16.5% on cost each year. That's right: I'm beating the historical S&P 500 returns of 10% per year on my dividend income alone (and that doesn't even count capital appreciation). Vanguard index fund founder Jack Bogle's stock market forecast is wrong

When it comes to investing in index funds, Vanguard index funds and Jack Bogle are the place to be. However, a lot of their quality is due to interest rates, luck, the US and inflation. This video shares the other side of index investing.
Investing in Vanguard Index Funds

25:53
Vanguard Index Funds for Beginners // Start investing in Vanguard index funds. In this video, I go through the mutual funds and ETFs that Vanguard has to offer, as well as my top 5 Vanguard funds that you might consider looking into. Enjoy! What is an ETF? An ETF is a collection of stocks and bonds in a single fund. ETFs are traded on major stock exchanges and are traded very similarly to stocks. What is a Mutual Fund? Mutual funds are overseen by a portfolio manager. The portfolio manager pools together money from many different investors and uses that money to invest into different assets. The investors make money, or lose money, based on the performance of the fund. What is an index fund? An index fund seeks to track the performance of a market index, like the S&P 500. Unlike mutual funds, there is no portfolio manager that is actively selecting different securities to invest in. An index fund is made up of a representative sample of the securities in a specific index. Which 5 funds are highlighted in this video? Vanguard S&P 500 ETF - VOO This fund seeks to track the performance of the S&P 500 and can help you to build a diversified portfolio. The S&P 500 is made up of large cap American companies. Historically, investors have seen about a 9-10% return on investment. Total Stock Market ETF - VTI Similar to the S&P 500 fund, VTI will give investors great diversification in their portfolio. Instead of tracking a specific market index, VTI seeks to track the performance of the total stock market. This will include large cap, mid cap and small cap stock as well as a mixture of growth and value stocks. Total Bond Market ETF - BND The Total Bond Market ETF seeks to track the performance of the bond market as a whole. BND is a more conservative fund, compared to something that includes only stocks, however bonds are an important piece in a portfolio because they can act as a hedge against stocks. Vanguard Target Retirement Fund Retirement funds are target date funds. If you invest in a target retirement fund, then you will see your portfolio start off more aggressive and slowly taper to more conservative investments as you near the target date, in this case that would be retirement. Vanguard Total World Stock ETF - VT VT seeks to track the total world stock market. It's a good idea to have some international investments within your portfolio and this ETF can provide that. Vanguard Founder Jack Bogle on Mutual Funds, Common Sense Investing and the Stock Market

01:08:43
The Investment Gospel According to Jack Bogle: “Don’t look for the needle in a haystack. Just buy the haystack.” Does that mean buy, sell or hold — stocks, bonds or gold? Watch this discussion with John C. Bogle, who founded The Vanguard Group in 1974, served as its chairman and CEO until 1996 and senior chairman until 2000. Fortune magazine named him one of the investment industry’s four “Giants of the 20th Century”. TIME magazine cited him as one of the world’s 100 most powerful and influential people. Known for his straight talk on Common Sense Investing, and for having invented the Index Mutual Fund, Jack Bogle built Vanguard to be the world’s largest mutual fund organization, representing 170 funds with current assets totaling more than $2 trillion. He has written 10 books, received honorary degrees from 14 universities, served on many important commissions and boards, received countless honors, and to tally changed the face of investing in the world

The Advantages of Investing in Small Cap Stocks

03:59
You can download a free list of Russell 2000 stocks here: https://www.suredividend.com/russell-2000-stocks/ Many investors focus on large-capitalization stocks, which are loosely defined as stocks with more than $10 billion of market capitalization. While this strategy works for most, it has the effect of artificially narrowing your investment universe. Moreover, the rise of online brokers, index funds, and other passive investment products has made it easier than ever to invest in small cap stocks. In this video, I explain the advantages of investing in small cap stocks. What are Small Cap Stocks? To begin, let’s talk about the definition of a small-cap stock. Small cap stocks are defined as stocks with market capitalizations between $250 million and $2 billion. Stocks that are smaller than this are called microcaps or nanocaps, while stocks that are larger than this are called midcaps or largecaps. ------------------------------------------------------ Reason #1: A Broader Investment Universe The first reason why investing in small-cap stocks is attractive is because of the sheer number of companies that dwell in the small-cap space. This is appealing from the perspective of diversification, and also because it allows you to be more selective when hunting for investment opportunities. For evidence of this broader investment universe, consider the major market indices for large-cap and small-cap stocks. The main index for small-caps is the Russell 2000, which contains about 2000 companies. The main index for large-cap stocks is the S&P 500, which contains about 500 companies. Said another way, the small-cap stock universe contains about four times as many companies as its large-cap counterpart. ------------------------------------------------------ Reason #2: A Less Efficient Market Small-cap stocks receive much less attention from the financial markets. They receive less analyst coverage and less consideration from the media. What this means for investors is that small-cap stocks can remain quite mispriced for prolonged periods of time. When large-cap stocks become disconnected from their intrinsic value, investors quickly take notice. This is not the case in small-cap stocks, which creates opportunities for self-directed investors to acquire shares below their intrinsic value and profit from potential valuation expansion. ------------------------------------------------------ Reason #3: No Institutional Ownership On the surface, it may not be clear why a lack of institutional ownership in small-cap stocks is beneficial for self-directed investors. It comes down to the fundamental principles of supply and demand. When institutions begin to buy a stock – particularly a small-cap stock – it creates significant buying pressure in the market. This increases stock prices. As we know, higher prices result in lower future returns, all else being equal. Small-cap stocks do not have this problem. They are outside the realm of most institutional investors, which creates more favorable prices for investors that are willing to venture into this space. In fact, one of the “sweet spots” of investing is when a small-cap business grows to the point that it is included in some of the major market indices. This means that a great number of ETF providers and other passive investment products are forced to buy the stock, which drives its price higher. A recent example occurred when it was announced that Walgreens was joining the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Walgreens’ stock rose by 4% on the day of the announcement. ------------------------------------------------------ Reason #4: Small-Cap Stocks Naturally Have More Upside Some of the best gains that are available in the stock market are when investors can purchase shares in an attractively-valued business, and then that business sustains a high growth rate for a very long period of time. In fact, each of the world’s largest businesses grew to their current size by following this blueprint. However, large companies are limited in how much they can grow. Apple has a market cap of nearly $1 trillion dollars. It is unlikely that the company will double in size over the next several years. Instead, shareholder returns will come from dividend payments, share repurchases, and perhaps some modest business growth. Small cap stocks have a completely different total return profile. Their growth potential is much greater, which often creates spectacular returns for investors that have the ability to recognize these businesses early. If you do not have this ability, passive funds that track the Russell 2000 index will also capture this growth.

VANGUARD TOTAL WORLD STOCK INDEX FUND ETF (VT)

ADX is charted as a line with values ranging from 0 to 100. Developed by Larry Williams, this indicator helps spot overbought and oversold market conditions. Because of its incorporation of volume, the MFI is better suited to identify potential reversals using both overbought/oversold levels and bullish/bearish divergences. This indicator compares the closing price of a stock in relation to the highs and lows over a certain time period. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is an often employed momentum oscillator that is used to measure the speed and change of stock price movements. The RSI can help display whether the bulls or the bears are now strongest in the market. Investors will commonly use Williams %R in conjunction with other trend indicators to help spot possible stock turning points. The RSI was developed by J. Welles Wilder in the late 1970's. A move above 70 is widely considered to show the stock as overbought, and a move below 30 would indicate that the stock may be oversold. In general, if the reading goes above -20, the stock may be considered to be overbought. After studying the broader economic factors that impact equity markets, it may be time to focus in on specific stocks to add to the portfolio. Monitoring the numbers for Vanguard S&P Mid-Cap 400 Growth Index Fund (IVOG), we are noting that the KAMA is trending up over the last five days. The 14-day RSI is now sitting at 66.18, the 7-day is at 68.39, and the 3-day is spotted at 56.21 for Vanguard Total World Stock Index Fund ETF (VT). The Average Directional Index or ADX is a technical analysis indicator used to describe if a market is trending or not trending. A value of 50-75 would signal a very strong trend, and a value of 75-100 would indicate an extremely strong trend. On the flip side, an RSI near 0 may signal weaker momentum. Using the CCI as a leading indicator, technical analysts may use a +100 reading as an overbought signal and a -100 reading as an oversold indicator, suggesting a trend reversal. At the time of writing, Vanguard 500 Index Fund (VOO) has a 14-day Commodity Channel Index (CCI) of 16.00. Taking a peek at some Moving Averages, the 200-day is at 77.95, and the 50-day is 79.42. Technical traders may also be looking at recent indicator levels on shares of Vanguard Total World Stock Index Fund ETF (VT). The ADX is used to measure trend strength. The Balance Step formula is based on near-term moving averages to predict which direction a trend is heading. Using the ADX with the Plus Directional Indicator (+DI) and Minus Directional Indicator (-DI) may help determine the direction of the trend as well as the overall momentum. When applying indicators for technical analysis, traders and investors might want to look at the ATR or Average True Range. We can also take a look at the Average Directional Index or ADX of Vanguard 500 Index Fund (VOO). A value of 25-50 would indicate a strong trend. Investors may be watching technical indicators such as the Williams Percent Range or Williams %R. The Williams %R is created to provide a general sense of when the equity might have reached an extreme and be primed for a reversal. Many successful investors have become highly adept at knowing when to buy and when to sell. Tracking other technical indicators, the 14-day RSI is presently standing at 68.96, the 7-day sits at 76.85, and the 3-day is resting at 75.03 for Vanguard Mega Cap 300 Value Index Fund (MGV). A CCI reading of +100 may represent overbought conditions, while readings near -100 may indicate oversold territory.

The Problem With Small Cap Stocks

11:45
In this video I'm going to tell you why you should think carefully about owning small cap ETFs. You probably won’t be surprised if I tell you that small-cap stocks, in general, have outperformed large-cap stocks over the long-term, even on a risk-adjusted basis, with risk measured as standard deviation. This is well-documented around the world and over time. Small caps were the first market anomaly that challenged the capital asset pricing model and resulted in today’s multi-factor models for asset pricing. What is the best Investment? Where to Invest Money?

06:32
What is the absolute best place to invest your money for the high returns? To answer this question, you first have to realize two things. First no one can predict the future. I can only tell you what investment performed the best in the past, and based on that information, you may be able to conclude that this same investment will also perform the best in the future. The other thing you have to realize is that high returns also come with high risk, meaning your principle could fluctuate in value quite a bit. There is no such thing as high returns without high risk. If anyone tries to sell you something that has a high return with low or no risk – that is a sure sign that he is ripping you off and is lying to your face. And you should run. So because of the fluctuation in value, or higher risk, you should only make a high return investment if you have a long term horizon, meaning you don’t need to touch the money for at least 10 years. If you need the money for an expected expense before that time, don’t put it in this kind of investment So, as long as you understand these two things, here is the absolute highest return investment over the past. This should be no surprise – Stocks have had the highest returns over the past 50, 75, and 90 years versus any other type of investment. In fact, if you invested $10,000 in the US stock market just 50 years ago in 1969, you would have over $1,000,000 today. In fact over the past 100 years, the stock market has seen an average return of about 7% per year. At this rate, the value of your investment doubles every 10 years. There is no good reason to think this won’t continue. Now what you also have to realize is that although this is a spectacular increase, it also comes with risk. This means that some years are great while other years are not so great. In the past 80 years, for example, the stock market had a positive return in 50 of those years, and a negative return in about 30 of those years. So there are ups and downs, but if you stick with it, your portfolio should see a great return over time, as you can see on this chart which is by the way adjusted for inflation. Again, if you are just looking for the best return and you have at least a 10 year horizon, this would be the place to put it. But if you going to need this investment money for some expected expense, then don’t put your money here. In that case, I will tell you where to put your money in a future video. Now, the question is where specifically should you put your money. When I say the “stock market” that is a very broad term. Which stocks do I mean? So let me answer that. The historical charts I used are for the United States. However, as you might be aware, the United States has had a spectacular historical economic run. Over the past 100 years, it has been a dominant economic force in the world and the epicenter of global technology and growth. So its stock market, not surprisingly, has seen a corresponding incredible growth. Will it still be this way for the next 100 years? That remains to be seen, so to hedge your bet on which country’s stock market to invest in, I would invest in all of them. How is this possible? It is possible by investing in a global stock index fund, that invests money in stocks of companies located around the world. And Here’s the one I would look at: (Watch the video to find out) Why this fund? It invests in not only the U.S. but also developed foreign market, and emerging markets. So you get exposure to and benefit of growth from companies located around the world, in any country that might be the next growth center for the future, including the United States. And this fund, being a fund from Vanguard, has a very low cost – less than 0.2%. This means that your money doesn’t get eaten up in fees, so you get to keep more of it. Now you may say, well, in order to get the absolute best return, shouldn’t I invest in the highest growing sector of the stock market, like only the technology companies, because they have had the best growth over the past 20 years? Well, the problem is no one can predict the future. Although technology stocks like Google, Amazaon and Facebook, definitely performed best in the recent past, they may not be the best sector in the future. You don’t know which sector is going to perform the best going forward. So, I believe the best strategy is to hedge your bet and invest in all the sectors. So investing in the Vanguard Global Total World Stock Index Fund – hedges your bet because it invests not only in countries around the world but also various industrial sectors. Vanguard vs IWeb: Which Is The Cheapest ISA Platform?

In this video, we compare the costs of two of the cheapest platforms: Vanguard and IWeb. IWeb's annual fee is zero, but it has a setup fee and charges for trades whereas Vanguard charges 0.15% of the amount you invest capped at £375 per year, has no setup fee and you can trade for free. It turns out that the cheapest platform depends on how much you invest and how much you trade.
