How to debug javascript in visual studio

04:16
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/10/how-to-debug-javascript-in-visual-studio.html In this video we will discuss, How to debug JavaScript in Visual Studio Here are the steps 1. In Visual Studio, right click on a web form and select "Browse With..." option from the context menu 2. In the "Browse With" window, a) select "Internet Explorer" b) Click "Set as Default" button c) Finally click "Browse" button 3. Close the internet explorer window that opens and run the visual studio project in Debug Mode. 4. In Visual Studio, throw a break point on the JavaScript function that you want to debug. At this point, in the internet explorer perform the action (i.e clicking on button or changing a selection in the DropDownList) that calls the JavaScript function. The JavaScript execution should stop at the breakpoint and we should be able to step over and step into code using F10 and F11 keys respectively. At this point we should also be able to use watch, quick watch and immediate windows in visual studio. This approach will not work in visual studio 2008, if you are using any other browser apart from Internet Explorer.

Basic settings & customizing the screens

05:31
Find it EZ is fast and simple to configure.  This demo will demonstrate how to quickly add Projects using the Project Manager, edit a Project’s Settings, switch between Projects, choose which sources to scan, and change the User Options. Projects contain the settings used for a search. Using Projects gives you the ability to quickly search different directories, languages, databases, and reports. You may add a new Project either by using the Search Assistant, or by using Manage Projects. Click Projects, click Manage Projects, then click Add. In the resulting text box, enter a name for the new Project, and click OK. To edit your new Project’s settings, click Edit. In the Folder and File Settings tab, you may add as many directories as you wish to search by clicking Add under the Search Path(s) field. You may add directories by either using the folder browser, or by typing in the directory path. You may also choose whether or not to recursively search all sub-directories, and whether to explicitly include or exclude the directory contents in each search. To add any filters for files you wish to exclude, click Add under the Exclude File(s) field. Fully qualified filenames or wildcard patterns may be used. Click on any of the listed Programming Languages to modify the file extensions to be included in a syntax aware search. You may also set your preferred application to instantly edit or view results in full context. To add a custom file extension to a programming language’s settings, click Add under the File Extensions Searched field. Enter the file extension to be searched, and click OK. To change the editor or IDE which opens this type of language file, click one of Find it EZ Code Viewer, Windows default editor, or Selected Application. To search an Access database, click on Access under Databases. Note the alert prompting for required information. You may disable this hint by checking "Do not show this message again". Enter the path and file name of the Microsoft Access database file, and its password, if one exists. Click Test Connection to verify that the provided information is correct. You can select what database information you wish to search by checking options in the Search section. You may also select your preferred editor for opening search results. To add any other of type of database, such as SQL Server, click on the database type under Databases. Add the Service or Instance, Port Number if it is non-standard, the username and password of a user with read access, and the name of the Database to search. If known, you may enter the database name directly, or select it from a list by opening the database browser. Click Test Connection to verify that the credentials you have provided are correct. Select what type of database information you wish to search and note that for all databases, you can also improve search times and reduce false positives by choosing subsets of objects to search. For example, to limit which tables to search for data, click the Data tab, click Refresh, and select which of the Available Tables you wish to search, or alternatively, type the name of the table you wish to add in the Filter text-box, adding an asterisk for any wildcard pattern matches. The Active Project is the project whose settings are currently being used to complete searches. Setting which Project is active is simple. Within Manage Projects, highlight the project you wish to make active by clicking it, and click Set Active. Alternatively, click Projects, and select the Project you wish to make active from the list. Before you search, you must choose which sources to scan. Under Scan Sources, select all the sources you wish to scan at this point. These can be easily changed before or between each search. To edit your User Options, click Tools, then click User Options. Here you can change how the application behaves. The On Startup section controls actions on Startup. Under Performance, you can choose whether or not to enable multi-threaded searching, and define how many searches to do simultaneously. The Results section allows you to automatically expand the details of each search result. You may chose to turn various Tips and Hints off once you are familiar with using Find it EZ. Use scan options to further customize each search with syntax aware filters, wildcards or regular expressions. The maximum number of source items scanned simultaneously is based on user option settings demonstrated earlier. Rename Visual Studio VB.Net Project Tutorial

06:34
This tutorial will illustrate how to rename a Visual Studio 2010 project. This is also useful for copying one project and modifying it which should include a rename. This will also help to understand the infamous "One or more projects in the solution were not loaded correctly" error message. This fix renames and rebuilds all of the necessary file names and references as well as removes traces of the old name.

Link for code samples used in the demo http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/11/part-2-consuming-web-service.html Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Here are the steps to consume the web service that we have created in Part 1. Step 1: Right click on WebServicesDemo solution in solution explorer and add new asp.net web application project and name it CalculatorWebApplication. Step 2: Now we need to add a reference to web service. To achieve this a) Right click on References folder in the CalculatorWebApplication project and select Add Service Reference option b) In the Address textbox of the Add Service Reference window, type the web service address and click GO button. In the namespace textbox type CalculatorService and click OK. Step 3: Right click on CalculatorWebApplication project in solution explorer and add new webform. Step 3: Copy and paste the following HTML Get the HTML for the page from my blog as youtube doesn't allows HTML in the description of the video. Step 4: Copy and paste the following code in the code-behind file protected void btnAdd_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { CalculatorService.CalculatorWebServicesSoapClient client = new CalculatorService.CalculatorWebServicesSoapClient(); int result = client.Add(Convert.ToInt32(txtFirstNumber.Text), Convert.ToInt32(txtSecondNumber.Text)); lblResult.Text = result.ToString(); } In an interview the interviewer may ask you the following questions related to consuming a web service. 1. What is WSDL and what is it's purpose 2. How is a proxy class generated 3. What is the use of a proxy class 4. What actually happens when a web service reference is added The following 2 paragraphs should provide the answers for the above questions Visual studio generates a proxy class using the WSDL (Web Service Description Language) document of the web service. The WSDL document formally defines a web service. It contains 1. All the methods that are exposed by the web service 2. The parameters and their types 3. The return types of the methods This information is then used by visual studio to create the proxy class. The client application calls the proxy class method. The proxy class will then serialize the parameters, prepares a SOAP request message and sends it to the web service. The web service executes the method and returns a SOAP response message to the proxy. The proxy class will then deserialize the SOAP response message and hands it the client application. We don't have to serialize or deserialize dot net CLR objects to and from SOAP format. The proxy class takes care of serialization and deserialization and makes the life of a developer much easier.

Step 1 : The first step is to install Node.js and npm. It is recommended that you have node version 4.6.x or greater and npm 3.x.x or greater. To check the versions that you have on your machine type the following commands in a command window. node -v npm -v You can get the latest version of Node.js from the following website. https://nodejs.org/en/download Step 2 : Make sure you have Visual Studio 2015 Update 3 installed. To check the version of Visual Studio you have click on the "Help" menu and then select "About Microsoft Visual Studio" Download links Visual Studio Enterprise 2015 - Update 3 http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/4/3/843ec655-1b67-46c3-a7a4-10a1159cfa84/vs2015.3.ent_enu.iso Visual Studio Professional 2015 - Update 3 http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/b/c/ebc2c43f-3821-4a0b-82b1-d05368af1604/vs2015.3.pro_enu.iso Visual Studio Community 2015 - Update 3 http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/e/d/bedddfc4-55f4-4748-90a8-ffe38a40e89f/vs2015.3.com_enu.iso Step 3 : Configure environment settings for node and npm in Visual Studio. 1. In Visual Studio click on Tools - Options. 2. In the "Options" window, expand "Projects and Solutions" and select "External Web Tools" 3. In the right pane, move the global $(PATH) entry to be above the internal path $(DevEnvDir) entries. This tells Visual Studio to look for external tools (like npm) in the global path before the internal path. 4. Click "OK" to close the "Options" window and then restart Visual Stduio for the changes to take effect Step 4 : Install TypeScript for Visual Studio 2015 To develop Angular applications you need TypeScript 2.2.0 or later To check the version of TypeScript, clik on the "Help" menu in Visual Studio and select "About Microsoft Visual Studio" Download and install the latest version of TypeScript for Visual Studio 2015 from the following URL https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48593 Step 5 : Create Empty ASP.NET Web Application project Step 6 : Download the "Quick Start Files" from the Angular web site. https://github.com/angular/quickstart Step 7 : Copy the required "Starter files" to the web application project Step 8 : Restore the required packages. In the "Solution Explorer" right click on "package.json" file and select "Restore Packages" from the context menu. This takes a few minutes to load all the modules. You can see the status in "Visual Studio Output" window. After the restoration is complete, you will see a message "Installing Packages Complete". To see all the installed node modules, click on "Show all Files" icon in Solution Explorer. DO NOT include "node_modules" folder in the project. Step 9 : Run the project In the "RUN" window type "cmd" and presee enter Change the directory in the command prompt to the directory where you have the web application project. Type "npm start" and press "Enter" key This launches the TypeScript compiler (tsc) which compile the application and wait for changes. It also starts the lite-server and launches the browser where you will see the output - Hello Angular. At this point, open "app.component.ts" file from "Solution Explorer". This file is present in "app" folder in "src" folder. Change "name" value from "Angular" to "Angular 2!" and you will see the changes reflected on the web page automatically. At the moment we do not have the capability to run the project by pressing F5 or CTRL + F5. We will discuss how to do this in our next video.

In our next video we will discuss, how to call this ASP.NET Web API service using Angular Step 1 : Execute the following SQL Script using SQL Server Management studio. This script creates 1. EmployeeDB database 2. Creates the Employees table and populate it with sample data Create Database EmployeeDB Go Use EmployeeDB Go Create table Employees ( code nvarchar(50) primary key, name nvarchar(50), gender nvarchar(50), annualSalary decimal(18,3), dateOfBirth nvarchar(50) ) Go Insert into Employees values ('emp101', 'Tom', 'Male', 5500, '6/25/1988') Insert into Employees values ('emp102', 'Alex', 'Male', 5700.95, '9/6/1982') Insert into Employees values ('emp103', 'Mike', 'Male', 5900, '12/8/1979') Insert into Employees values ('emp104', 'Mary', 'Female', 6500.826, '10/14/1980') Insert into Employees values ('emp105', 'Nancy', 'Female', 6700.826, '12/15/1982') Step 2 : To keep Angular and Web API projects separate, let's create a new project for our Web API Service. Right click on "Angular2Demo" solution in the Solution Explorer and select Add - New Project. Step 3 : In the Add New Project window Select "Visual C#" under "Installed - Templates" From the middle pane select, ASP.NET Web Application Name the project "EmployeeWebAPIService" and click "OK" Step 4 : On the next window, select "Web API" and click "OK". At this point you should have the Web API project created. Step 5 : Add ADO.NET Entity Data Model to retrieve data from the database. Right click on "EmployeeWebAPIService" project and select Add - New Item In the "Add New Item" window Select "Data" from the left pane Select ADO.NET Entity Data Model from the middle pane In the Name text box, type EmployeeDataModel and click Add Step 6 : On the Entity Data Model Wizard, select "EF Designer from database" option and click next Step 7 : On the next screen, click "New Connection" button Step 8 : On "Connection Properties" window, set Server Name = (local) Authentication = Windows Authentication Select or enter a database name = EmployeeDB Click OK and then click Next Step 9: On the nex screen, select "Employees" table and click Finish. Adding Web API Controller 1. Right click on the Controllers folder in EmployeeWebAPIService project and select Add - Controller 2. Select "Web API 2 Controller - Empty" and click "Add" 3. On the next screen set the Controller Name = EmployeesController and click Add 4. Copy and paste the following code in EmployeesController.cs using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web.Http; namespace EmployeeWebAPIService.Controllers { public class EmployeesController : ApiController { public IEnumerable[Employee] Get() { using (EmployeeDBEntities entities = new EmployeeDBEntities()) { return entities.Employees.ToList(); } } public Employee Get(string code) { using (EmployeeDBEntities entities = new EmployeeDBEntities()) { return entities.Employees.FirstOrDefault(e =] e.code == code); } } } } At this point when you navigate to /api/employees you will see all the employees as expected. However, when you navigate to /api/employees/emp101, we expect to see employee whose employee code is emp101, but we still see the list of all employees. This is because the parameter name for the Get() method in EmployeesController is "code" public Employee Get(string code) { using (EmployeeDBEntities entities = new EmployeeDBEntities()) { return entities.Employees.FirstOrDefault(e =] e.code == code); } } but in the default Web API route in WebApiConfig.cs file the parameter name is {id}. Change this to "code" as shown below config.Routes.MapHttpRoute( name: "DefaultApi", routeTemplate: "api/{controller}/{code}", defaults: new { code = RouteParameter.Optional } ); With this change if we navigate to /api/employees/emp101 we see just that employee whose employee code is "emp101" In our next video we will discuss, how to call this ASP.NET Web API service using Angular

All the npm dependencies are installed in node_modules folder Unit and end-to-end tests are created The Karma unit test runner is configured The Protractor end-to-end test framework is configured We will discuss unit tests, end-to-end tests, Karma and Protractor in our upcoming videos. Please note that all these code and configuration files are created by the Angular CLI out of the box while still following the angular teams best practices and conventions. Now, go to the folder (MyFirstApp) that contains our angular project, by executing the following command. cd stands for change directory cd MyFirstApp Now execute the following command at the command prompt to open the project folder in Visual Studio Code. Notice there is a single space and a DOT after the word code. code . At this point in Visual Studio Code you will see all the Angular project files. Also notice node_modules folder, that conatins all the installed packages. We will discuss, what all these files are and their purpose in our upcoming videos. To run the project using Angular CLI, type the following command at the command prompt. This command builds the application and opens it in our default browser. The flag --open, launches our default browser and runs the application. By default the application runs on port 4200. We can change this port number if required. We will discuss how to do that in our upcoming videos. ng serve --open At the moment, the angular development server is running in watch mode, meaning when a file changes, those changes are automatically detected, compiled and the browser reloads to reflect the changes. This is called live reload. We can turn this live reload functionality off, if required. Again we will discuss how to do this in our upcoming videos. To stop the server, press CTRL + C while you are on the command prompt and then "Y" and ENTER key. This will stop the server. To run all the unit tests, use the following command ng test To run all the end-to-end tests, use the following command ng e2e We will discuss Unit tests, end-to-end tests and all the options we can use to run them using Angular CLI in our upcoming videos.
